Escort

Our take on the Escort Passport 9500ix

by Dominic Devito

The Escort Passport 9500ix radar detector adds security to your drive with GPS capability and a built-in database of speed traps and camera locations. You can program the detector to run at maximum sensitivity at highway speeds, then to move automatically to city mode when you slow down, eliminating false alarms caused by outside interference.

Database of camera locations
The Passport 9500ix comes with a preloaded database of safety, red-light, and radar camera locations across North America, allowing the detector to warn you as one approaches. You can download updates, back up your data, and maintain the database through Escort's website. You'll need a subscription and a Windows®-based computer to update the Passport 9500ix's database — a free 90-day trial subscription is included with your purchase.

Store critical locations
Just tap a button on the nickel-plated keyboard to store locations along the road where the speed limit drops quickly, or where you might encounter heavy enforcement. The Passport 9500ix will warn you when you approach them in the future. Or press the mute button at the location of a known false signal — the Passport 9500ix will remember the signal, muting the alert the next time you pass by. You'll hear an alert if another type of signal comes from the same location.

Outstanding radar and laser protection
The Passport 9500ix also offers Escort's trademark long-range protection against all-band radar and laser threats, plus invisibility to VG-2 detection. Its display offers a wealth of information, including your own speed. You'll hear the detector's alerts over road noise, thanks to automatic volume control. Escort includes a hardy travel case for portability and storage.

Traffic Signal Rejection
Escort's proprietary Traffic Signal Rejection software goes even further to reduce false alerts. It detects strong K-band signals emitted by common highway traffic flow sensors and weeds them out, eliminating meaningless alarms so you can stay focused on the real threats.

    Features

Enhanced 360-Degree Radar And Laser Detection: The Escort Passport 9500ix radar detector delivers extreme long-range warning on all radar bands including X, K, Superwide Ka, Ku and instant-on POP modes. Multiple front and rear laser sensors provide 360 degree laser protection, including a wide field of view.

GPS Technology: The Passport 9500ix has an embedded SiRFstar III GPS receiver, and uses GPS technology to identify and eliminate false alarms. The GPS-powered TrueLock Filter lets you lock out false alerts by "marking" the location so the detector can reject the signal the next time you approach the area. The unit is also pre-loaded with thousands of safety camera locations, including red light and fixed photo radar sites, and will warn you when you are approaching these sites. The mini-USB port allows you to update your safety camera data and other software through the Escort website.

AutoLearn: GPS technology is also used to "learn" the source of radar signals by location and frequency, and determine if the signal is a real threat or a false one. If the alert comes from an automatic door opener or motion sensor, the Passport 9500ix automatically locks out this source at this particular location. The unit can also "unlearn" signals that are no longer present at a particular location to protect you from locking out real threats.

Mark Location (MRK): The Passport 9500ix has an "MRK" button that allows you to mark a specific location and label it for future reference. Once the location is marked and labeled, the unit will provide an alert 250' or 10 seconds away for red light or speed cameras, or 1/3-mile away for speed traps or other danger zones.

SpeedAlert: When SpeedAlert is enabled, the unit will display your speed during an alert. After a few seconds, the display will indicate the meter type you have selected.

VG-2 Protection: This unit uses SmartShield VG2 Immunity to make it invisible to radar detector detectors.

Traffic Signal Rejection: The Passport 9500ix utilizes Traffic Signal Rejection to eliminate false alerts due to location or certain frequencies. Radar-based traffic flow sensors, mounted along major highways, transmit strong K-band signals for a half-second approximately every minute. These signals help produce traffic flow data for personal navigation devices, but also create numerous false radar alerts. Escort's proprietary Traffic Signal Rejection (TSR) software, found in the 9500ix, helps eliminate annoying false alerts.

Advanced EZ-Programming: The Passport 9500ix can be easily customized to your driving preferences. The EZ-Programming features include: Power-on Indication, Power-on Sequence, Signal Strength Meter, AutoMute, Audio tones, City Mode Sensitivity, Display Brightness, Dark Mode, and your choice of Radar and Laser bands.

Enhanced Radar Detection: The Passport 9500ix features enhanced "V-Tuned" radar receiver provides long-range warning on all radar types. Digital signal processing provides maximum range and minimizes false alarms. The unit offers three radar sensitivity settings:

    • Auto: In Auto mode the unit provides real-time radar performance base on your vehicle's speed. As your vehicle speed increases, the radar sensitivity (X and K-band) is set to maximum range. As your vehicle speed decreases, the radar sensitivity (X and K-band only) is minimized to further reduce unwanted false alarms. Full sensitivity is maintained on all other bands.
    • Highway: Highway mode provides maximum sensitivity on all bands.
    • City: City modes reduces X-band sensitivity and full sensitivity is maintained on all other bands.

Variable-Speed Radar: The Passport 9500ix AutoSensitivity mode varies radar sensitivity base on your vehicle's speed resulting in better radar performance.

High-Resolution Red Display: The radar detector features an ultra-bright red alphanumeric matrix-display with 280 LEDs and 5 brightness levels (Minimum, Medium, Maximum, Auto and Full Dark) to choose from.

3 High-Resolution Meter Modes: The Passport 9500ix provides 3 types of meter displays to choose from:

    • Signal Strength Meter: Standard bar-graph meter that provides information on a single radar signal. If there are multiple signals present, the unit's internal computer will determine which one is the most important threat to display.
    • ExpertMeter: The ExpertMeter is a miniature spectrum analyzer simultaneously tracks up to 8 radar signals. It provides detailed information on up to 2 Ka-band, 2 K-band, and 4 X-band signals.
    • SpecDisplay: In this mode, the unit will display the actual numeric frequency of the radar signal being received.

Voice and Beep Alerts: When enabled, all alerts and instructions are communicated using a voice announcement. If you desire, the voice alerts can be turned off, and all alerts will sound using tones.

Auto Mute: After the initial audible alert, the volume is automatically reduced, so you need not manually mute the sound. This feature can be defeated.

Mute Button: Once an alarm sounds, it can be silenced using the mute button.

Earphone Jack: There is a standard 3.5mm earphone jack on the right side of the unit.

SmartCord Cigarette Lighter Adapter: The supplied cigarette lighter plug has an alert LED that lights even when the unit is in the Dark mode and a mute button in case the unit is not within easy reach.

AutoPower: The AutoPower feature automatically turns off the unit if the vehicle has not moved for 4 hours. This feature is useful if your vehicle has a "hot plug" which provides 12 volts all the time, and reduces the current drain on the vehicle's battery.

EasyMount Bracket: The radar detector comes supplied with an EasyMount windshield bracket that is designed for unobtrusive and hassle-free mounting. The bracket clips onto the top of the Passport 9500ix and suction-cup mounts to your windshield. The Passport 9500ix features a release button that will allow you to remove the unit from the bracket while still leaving the suction-cup window mount bracket in place. Two spare suction cups are included.

ZR4 Laser Shifter Compatible: The Passport 9500ix is compatible with the optional Escort ZR4 Laser Shifter (sold separately). The ZR4 provides the most advanced defense system against targeting laser guns, and can be linked to the unit for ultimate protection.

    Escort Passport 9500ix

Written By olelaker, Rockford, Il on Wednesday, March 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worth the high price. The 950ix has already alerted me to police I was not aware of. I agree the best way to avoid a ticket is to use your eyes, but even then there are instances where this approach doesn't work. the quality of the 9500 is top notch and the automatic ability to store false alerts is even better then I thought it would be. I choose this device over the Bell unit for this feature and it is worth the extra money. I plan on getting a second unit for my other car in the next month or two. I don't regret the purchase even thought it cost a lot, for me it will pay for itself shortly.
    Pros:
auto store false alerts, online database, easy of use
    Cons:
high cost - quality comes at a price

    Good assistant.

Written By Teddy, Housotn, Tx. on Monday, November 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good driving assistant. Shipping was fast. Well packaged and brand new. Overall it is a very good detector. I think the suction cup mount (additional) was not necessary as the adjustability on it is poor. I hard wired mine in through the accessory fuse slot using an "add a circuit" from any autoparts store. everything works like a dream and the radar truely is "smart" with the auto-learn feature and adjustability options of the radar. Overall I love it & happy with it. Good purchase!
    Pros:
Sensitive radar! learning how to program it according to where you live and what you want out of it is a must. It's gps is a good addition to this model (i came from an 8500). not tacky looking and usability is amazing.
    Cons:
can be "overly" sensitive on x and k band (forced me to read instructions). stand-alone suction cup mount could use another joint. For $ spent, buyers should not have to pay for an optional "live" account that only is as good as the # of people in the area that use it.

    Escort Passport 9500ix

Written By D Hall, Upstate New York - Land of speed enforcement on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A month before I purchased anything from Crutchfield Corporation, I received a call early in the morning to verify if I had actually purchased a very expensive "electronic gadget" in the middle of the night. The end of the story is my AMEX card was compromised while I slept and thousands of dollars were charged to my credit card. The end of the story is my AMEX card was shut down and Crutchfield saved me from a major disaster. Now the day arrives when I want to purchase an Escort Passport 9500ix for my own personal car. What store should I buy the detector of my dreams? Answer: No one other than Crutchfield. The Escort Passport 9500ix is an absolute total dream. Drive by the false alerts from automatic doors a few times and the warning will be erased thanks to the GPS that is installed inside the 9500ix. This is the best "fish finder" or best "police radar trap" detector imaginable. The detector's alarm so far in advance of the trap . . . . you could let off the gas pedal and coast to a stop way before you get to the trap. The alarm is so loud with "status rating bars" on the screen that there is NO doubt there is a "Great White Shark" out there waiting to devour you and write a speeding ticket. Crutchfield and Escort Passport 9500ix are TOTALLY THE BEST EVER!! Period!
    Pros:
Red light Cameras, MAJOR ADVANCE WARNING, eliminates false warnings, GPS, Download updates from your computer, Blue light self adjusts to outside lighting (i.e., eliminates the inside the fish bowl syndrome at night)
    Cons:
    ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!

    Escort 9500ix

Written By jmbl, Westchester, NY on Tuesday, September 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radar detector, without doubt, is the best I've ever owned. It does everything it's supposed to do and I have to give props to Crutchfield customer support also. I had to exchange one due to a usb malfunction and they shipped out a new one before I even returned my first defective detector. Updates are easy and work well with the Escort software which must be downloaded to your computer. The letters "USB" show in the detector display when the detector connects to your computer. If you do not see the "USB" letters in the display, just hit the power switch on the detector and the connection will be made. Once that happens and you run the update program, you can check for database as well as firmware updates.

In operation, this detector does a great job blocking out false alarms on its own once you have gone through a location 3 times. The false alarm location will be automatically stored. You can also enter a blocked location yourself by hitting the "Mute" button 3 times and that location will be stored as a false alarm.

I would suggest getting a good carrying case to transport the detector to and from your car. The case the 9500ix comes in is very slippery and may fall out of your hands accidentally. I got one that has a wrist strap so transporting is no problem for me.

This is a great product which I highly recommend.
    Pros:
Great signal detection and false alarm detection system.
    Cons:
None, compared to other detectors. The price is well worth it.

    Escort 9500ix is fantastic

Written By KimW, Phoenix, Az on Sunday, August 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great detector. Plus the fact that I can plug in a mini USB and get updates over the internet of all the various attributes of the 9500ix. I have owned several detectors and I have not found one that has the versatility and functionality of this radar detector. My past detectors have been just great at detecting when I am about to get a speeding ticket. Everything pales in comparison to the Escort 9500ix. Fairly pricey, but already saved my butt more than once. Love it!! Buy it!! Cant go wrong!!! Mine has payed for itself already and I have only had it a month...... Read the owners manual- Super cup that is offered with it wont allow the detector to function properly. The detector must touch the windshield, super cup wont allow that to happen. Throw the Super cup in the trash and use the what comes with the detecor and you will be fine.
    Pros:
It works on everything out there and it remembers the nuisance alerts.... Fantastic unit..
    Cons:
Dont get to worked up over the "free" super cup. Your detector wont function correctly if it sits that far away from the windshield (read the owners manual)

Waste of money. It's picking up automatic doors but is missing the radars. I got tickets coming back from south, one in VA the detector did not even went off. Deleware, by the time the detector went off I was painted by laser. Very dissapointed.
    Cons:
Picking up automatic doors. Missing radars in police cars, not enough warning time, when get hit by laser, you will get a ticket. Overpriced.

Works great. I upgraded this from my 10 year old Passport 8500 (non-x50). Works great the GPS aspect really is neat.
    Pros:
Great range, no real false alarms and if there are this locks it out quickly over time.
    Cons:
Price, but they are competitive here with it.

Good detector but needs a recall

Written By Don, Staten Island, New York on Friday, June 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far a a radar detector goes this is one heck of a device. Amazing long range and unbelievable ability to automatically block out false alarms. Also, its integration with your smart phone with Escort Live is in it's beginning stages but has great potential for keeping you safe. Safe from even the oops it's too late Laser hits, because if anyone reported it before you got there Escort Live knows about it and your are safe and sound. So why you ask only 2 stars. I have just received my 3rd unit from Crutchfield and unfortunately once more the unit is defective in that the USB port does not work. There appears to be a design flaw with 9500ix's that begin with a serial number that starts with a '330'. Don't take just my word for it see for yourself at the Escort's own discussion forum's. Now will Escort take it back and repair it, yes , but buyer beware you are taking your chances and either I have the worst luck in the world because I got 3 bum units from the supposed 30+ in stock or there are a lot of defective Radar detectors out there. So in summary I paid full retail price for a R.D. that will be a repaired/refurbished unit and had to deal with the hassle all be it small because of Crutchfields wonderful return policy twice. And now have to deal with returning the R.D. to Escort. Why bother you ask... well it really is a cool device.
    Pros:
Range, Auto lockout, AI, Escort Live
    Cons:
    Quality control

    It's too late

Written By Cam, Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, June 10, 2012

Do not waste your money, most officers (at least here in LA) no longer use radar and only utilize Laser devices. Once your detector alerts you (assuming any portion of the laser beam actually hit the detector and caused it to activate...low possibility) you have been caught! Here's a novel idea, GO THE SPEED LIMIT!

    Unbelievable Detector!

Written By Darren, Augusta,GA on Tuesday, March 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very expensive detector, but worth it. Smart technology is actually smart. I am impressed by all the features that do what they are supposed to do, unlike other models you have to watch out for. I have been researching radar detectors for quite awhile now and have found the perfect one. This is it, look no further and don't sacrifice or risk tickets with cheaper wannabe models. Laser alert does work and will scare the heck out of you when that annoying cop aims at you.Unfortunately, it is probably too late at that point so additional laser deflectors will keep you safe and you will find those on other websites for your front and rear license plates. Radar detection is very good and marking known radar traps is a breeze for warning you later when you enter the area again not paying attention. Make sure you update online before you drive. Little USB cable NOT included, need one that fits in cameras to get updates and register online. You would think for $500 bucks they could have thrown that in!
    Pros:
Long range distance detection, Very smart detector
    Cons:
USB cable not included for online updates

I guess there's not a perfect detector , but this is as close as one can get. you have to drive by the same false elert a few times before it will know its not a real one, learned cops use ka band more, then k band , x band false alarm, learn this one should be ok. laser, learn cops have to be pointing laser at you before you can pick them up, is that a elert in ones favor??
    Pros:
    works almost perfect

    More Than a Radar Detector

Written By JIm in Houston, Houston, TX on Thursday, February 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my wife's Porsche Cayenne as an alternative to another Valentine, which I use in my Carrera. I am very pleased with the adjustment for sensitivity, brightness, and volume, and the ability to disregard X-band annoyances. The additional features that I like are the GPS function and the red light and speed camera databases, plus the spoken warnings that identify the type of radar and the visible warnings that show your current speed.
    Pros:
Very visible and audible alerts with automatically adjustable brightness and adjustable volume; database of speed and red light cameras; speed display with warnings.
    Cons:
Lacks directional arrows of the Valentine.

Believe it or not I am a police officer and my post was transferred 100 miles from home. I was being stopped too often and I was tired of inconveniencing the guys. I researched this product and purchased it. I am extremely happy with it and it has great range. You do have to beware of the "laser alert" got hit with a few of those by the Troopers, and there is nothing you can do about it. Make no mistake about it though, your 9500 ix will scare the sh out of you to let you know.

    Some Facts

Written By Mazz, Rindge, NH on Monday, May 23, 2011

I love all of the features on this detector and it seems to perform extremely well. I mainly wanted to comment on a few other reviews.

To the person complaining about the laser detection ability...there is no good way to be warned about laser. Lasers are extremely concentrated, there is no scattering like there is with radar. If the detector is going off because of laser, they already have your speed. If they're aiming at someone else's car, you won't pick it up.

To the person complaining about false alarms...there is no was to avoid this. A radar detector does just that, detects radar. If that radar is from a door opener, it's still radar. The beauty of this detector is that if you know that something is a false alarm, you can block it from alerting you in the future. That's all you can do.

    Z Man - TN

Written By Z Man, Franklin, TN on Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Pro - Did extensive reseach; bought it and am very impressed with the performance; not disappointed, at all > good detection in city and highway; excellent in blocking GPS identified false signals; have had the unit for about a month and have gained good level of confidence in detection. Con - should include a straight-line cord, about 5 feet long, or so > the expansion cord is baciacally useless in trying to navigate dash-board controls / keeping cord out of the way. Would recommend to other buyers.

    Poor laser performance

Written By Dennis, Colorado on Monday, February 21, 2011

I recently purchased the escort 9500ix at Christmas time. The unit has performed poorly in detecting Highway Patrol Laser guns in Colorado. When I called customer support at Escort, I received the poor excuse of "oh, the police have gotten smarter and have started pointing their radar at the bumpers of the car" He continued on to say " If you have a windshield mounted detector, you need to purchase the accessory bumper mounted detector to be fully protected". He went on to tell me it would be $449.00 plus installation (professional installation required). Fool me once...... (you know the rest). To this day (2-15-2011) the website is promising protection against Lasers, but make no mention of this relevant fact. This is what angers me the most. Buyers beware.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good detector. Clever windshield mount. It would have been nice if the computer cord and maybe a sun visor mount would have been inclueded in the package.
