Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P5200HD

by Ken Nail

Pioneer has jumped into future of radio with the DEH-P5200HD CD receiver. Its built-in HD Radio™ tuner brings you the unparalleled sound quality and extra features of digital radio broadcasts. This heavy hitter covers almost every other base in the digital media ballpark too, and its large control knob allows you to whip through all your music files and menus in a flash.

The HD Radio advantage
You'll hear the difference when you tune in a station that's broadcasting HD Radio signals — FM broadcasts approach CD-quality sound, with no static or audio distortion. But that's just part of the story. You'll also have access to the additional programming broadcast on secondary or tertiary channels by HD Radio stations, choices that aren't available to regular radio listeners.

Once you connect your iPod® to the DEH-P5200HD, you can enjoy the convenience of iTunes® tagging. If you hear a song you like on an HD Radio station, just press a button on the receiver to "tag" it. Song information is saved to your iPod — simply connect your iPod to your computer and go to the Apple iTunes store to buy the song whenever you want.

Whatever else you want to play
The receiver plays all your CDs, even MP3, WMA, and AAC files that you've burned to disc, and you can use the USB input for a thumb drive packed with music files. Plug your iPod into the USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your player's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible.

The sound's the thing
Pioneer's Easy EQ 5-band equalizer gives you extra control over your sound. And if you're listening to your MP3 player, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever circuitry reverses the compression process to fill in some of the information lost when you created your files, especially in the higher frequencies that add sparkle and musical detail.

The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power for accurate sound, with built in high- and low-pass filters to optimize speaker performance. And if you want to really get your ride rocking, you can use the two sets of preamp outputs to connect external amplifiers, speakers, and subs.

Extensive options
Add satellite radio and tap into the wide variety of news, talk, sports, and commercial-free music that XM and SIRIUS offer. When you're driving with friends, you can use the front-panel auxiliary input to plug in the MP3 players they brought along.

Keep your hands on the wheel when talking on your mobile device by connecting Pioneer's optional Bluetooth® adapter. When a call comes in, your Pioneer receiver will mute the music and allow you to take the call on your compatible phone, without taking your hands off the wheel.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. You can turn off the warning tone. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

OEL Display: The DEH-P5200HD features a black background with a 1-line, 12-character white OEL display which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Dimmer: The headunit's display brightness can be set to High or Low for day or nighttime driving.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the Multi-Control button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off.

      Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P5200HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P5200HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P5200HD are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

7-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-P5200HD features a 7-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 7-way rotary commander.

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P5200HD is equipped with a 5-band (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, and 8kHz) EQ with 5 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, and Flat. There are also two Custom modes which allow you manually adjust the headunit's 5-band EQ from +/- 6dB.

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Dual 2.2-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P5200HD features two pair of 2.2-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear). The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as a dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

      Radio Functions

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-P5200HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio in the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-quality sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

iTunes Tagging: The headunit's built-in HD Radio tuner offers iTunes Tagging. It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your iPod connected to the headunit. iTunes Tagging gives you the ability to "tag" your favorite HD Radio songs and store the information on your connected iPod; without having to scramble for a piece of scrap paper in the car. Then later you can connect your iPod/iPhone to your PC and preview or purchase the "tagged" music at the iTunes Music Store. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Note: iTunes Tagging is supported by the following iPod/iPhone models -  iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Supertuner IIID Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is "Off", reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner from XM or SIRIUS. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM, sold separately) Pioneer XM receiver. For Sirius there are two options; connect the SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and the CD-SB10 Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (700SIRPION, sold separately), or use the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (130CDSB10, sold separately) and the SIRIUS dock-and-play adapter (607SCVDOC1, sold separately) along with a compatible portable SIRIUS radio. A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

      Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3, WMA and WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

Note: When playing compressed audio, there is no sound during fast-forward or reverse.

Name/Track Title List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA/AAC folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. Track Title List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB type-A input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant. This unit can play MP3, WMA, AAC, and/or WAV files stored on a USB Mass Storage device in FAT16 or FAT32 file system formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, AAC files with a bit rate of 16-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 1500 folders, and 15000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or on.

iPod Interface: The DEH-P5200HD can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports select iPods with a standard Dock Connector. You can connect your iPod using the unit's front-panel USB input (a dock connector-to-USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself (you can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, or album searches. You can also select random and repeat functions for a certain song, all songs, or specific folders. The headunit will also display your iPod's music file information, including Play Time, Song Title, Artist Name, and Album Title. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The Pioneer DEH-P5200HD is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of Feb. 2010):

      Who Designed This?!

Written By PT-1, SoCal on Friday, December 09, 2011

This thing is nearly unusable for all the impossible to understand buttons with un-intelligible labels. There's literally NOTHING intuitive about its design, interface or operation. When you're driving and want to change something, having to take your eyes off the road to find some tiny little button (that gives no feedback when you push it) is downright dangerous. It's not good, and it's going in the trash ASAP.

Great radio for the price, replaced factory in 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. Made factory speakers sound great!! Lots of sound tweaking options, I only wished it was easier to 'quickly' adjust bass and treble. Fastest way is with remote.

      Pioneer DEH-P5200HD

Written By Bigyash, Mississippi on Saturday, May 14, 2011
Installed in a 2010 Ford Ranger
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most of the features on this unit. Was afraid the display would be hard to
see in bright light but, even on very sunny days, it is easy to see. Only
giving it four stars because of the control knob and the red button lights. The
knob sticks up like a mushroom - it is very narrow and feels flimsy. It takes a
bit of getting used to when adjusting the volume. The contrast of the red label
lights against the highly polished black plastic makes them hard to see. And, of
course, the highly polished plastic shows finger prints and dust like crazy.
The mounting bracket Crutchfield supplied for a Ford Ranger was marginally OK.
Had to fiddle with it to make it work and there is no way the rear support in
the kit could be installed. Was able to remove a module at the bottom of the
dash and install a cushion at the rear of the radio but this should have been
part of the kit. Crutchfield service and shipping, as usual, was excellent.
Always a pleasure doing business with them

Got my new head unit (stereo) for my truck. Had no problems installing it. Plays
awesome, now I have to learn what all the buttons do ::grin:: - Directly
connected up to my already existing Sirius Satellite box.

I have to admit i was never a believer in a better reciever giving better sound. It
seemed that better speakers with an average reciever was just as good. Wow
this Pioneer surprised me, it made the car sound as good as it looks. And
when using the sound features on this radio it improves even more, love this
      unit!!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation took less than 15 minutes, all the Crutchfield documentation made
it extremly easy for the novice to understand. The Pioneer Radio itself is
excellent, although programming and remote control operation requires a
good read on the owners manual. I am very pleased with the whole experiance
with Crutchfield from ease of ordering online to the prompt delivery of the
      product.

      Pioneer DEH-P5200HD

Written By ALguy, Huntsville,AL on Wednesday, March 30, 2011
Installed in a 1999 Toyota Tacoma
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent unit- great sound with easy installation. The only thing missing from
my previous Pioneer receiver is the ability to access categories (e.g. News,
Talk, Sports, Pop, etc.) on XM. Maybe it's in there and I just haven't found it yet.
The USB works great with a thumb drive - I got one of the mini versions that
doesn't stick out far from the unit as I was worried about accidentally breaking
off a longer USB stick. Like most folks, my biggest complaint is the volume
knob -- it takes some focus to change the volume without changing stations or
skipping tracks because the knob doesn't stick out very far. Keep the remote
handy - it will make everything easier. Overall, an excellent product that does
everything I need with only a couple minor issues.

      Nice Radio

Written By Mr. B., Michigan on Tuesday, March 29, 2011
Installed in a 1985 Ford Ranger
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received this Stereo on March 24, 2011, and installed it the next Day. Was
easy to install with included install kit. I have some experience with installing
radios and settings on the Pioneer systems so everything went well. I have
seen some reviews about the Stereo not having a Clock. Well if you read the
Owners Manual it tells you how to set it and turn it on or off. It takes about a
minute or two for it to come up after you change radio stations or you put in a
CD but it's there. The MC Knob is very slim and tight to the Radio for BIG
Fingers like mine but over all it is a great Radio.

Too bad I'm not 16 years old...

Written By KWICK, Chandler, AZ on Sunday, March 20, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a snap. If you happen to have a Hyundai Accent, to get the vent
panel off, it's easiest to cut out the storage boxes and pull out from the back
side. Prying it up like the instructions say will damage the dash or bezel.

The stereo works great. Too bad I'm not 16 anymore...the controls are
incredibly complex to remember. Give me a volume knob on the left, stations
knob on the right and a "Loudness" button and I'd be very happy :-) I'll have a
      nephew teach me the rest.

      Great deck!

Written By Stephen, Mount Holly, NC on Friday, March 04, 2011

Love this stereo! Sounds great and easy to use. I don't find the wheel as annoying as some others do.

I can't figure out how to shuffle songs using a USB drive. Even if the shuffle indicator is on, the songs still play in sequential order.

Also, the scrolling function works fine for titles/artist names using USB, but for some reason they only scroll once when I use XM.

      Great radio...

Written By CoreyG, Perrysburg, OH on Friday, February 25, 2011
Installed in a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio a few weeks ago and so far it has been great. I have my
Sirius subscription and everything all together now, so my car isn't cluttered
with wires and extra tuners. Only complaint I could possibly have about this
radio would be about the volume knob. The knob is too hard to handle and is
pretty much used for everything....including the satellite radio, but I knew
about the issue before I bought the radio.

But the knob issue can be solved easily by remember that the remote is your
friend....basically controls everything and even has a mute button, so you can
instantly turn the sound off instead of turning the volume down.

If you decide to buy this radio you won't regret it.

      There is a clock!

Written By Am, NYC on Tuesday, February 22, 2011

First of all, there is a clock. It tells you right in the manual how to set it. I have to say I
like this radio, but I don't really have one to compare it to. It was installed in my 2002
Nissan Sentra and installation took about an hour. The main control knob is a pain and
for this reason I'm not sure I can recommend this radio. I have very slim fingers and it's
still hard to grab and control. I don't know what I would do without the remote! I bought
this radio so I could have all of my music with me on a usb flash drive since I don't have
an mp3 player. It reads the drive by date modified instead of alphabetically which can be
frustrating. I have to use a program to sort the drive. I have heard other radios just read
it alphabetically and had I known this I may have skipped the Pioneer. As for the HD
radio, I can defintely hear the difference. CDs sound/play well. The display is crisp,
clear and easy to read. The face does not detach easily and I wonder about constantly
pulling the usb in and out of it. I use a USB and it reads fine. I'm pretty much
at 3.5 stars. For me and my small fingers, it's a 4 but for the average person I have to
      give this radio a 3.

I grew up with Pioneer so that is why I continue and I haven't been disappointed yet. I will
say technology has come a long way. The DEH-5200HD is a very nice unit. Crutchfield
makes it to easy with installation. Once we had it in the auto it looked great. Some
people were complaing about the manual having such small print. Well this is true but
let me tell you a little secret. You can go to Crutchfield.com and look up your unit and
download the manual from there and it is very reader friendly. It does take some time to
understand the controls but like I said ... technology has come along way. Crutchfield is
      #1.

Pretty good stereo overall but there is no built in clock.

Every stock radio I've seen has one, so when you replace with this model better be aware you are going to be without a clock.

This is my first HD radio and I am impressed! Installed this in a 04 Ford F150 only took
about 45 min. from start to finish (it took more time to learn all the new buttons). Tech
Support was so helpful with my questions and the chat sessions to help figure out what
I needed is a HUGE help! Thanks once again Crutchfield, you guys are the best!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the radio for the iPhone/iPod interface and the HD radio. Both work well and the
sound is excellent. The number of options takes some time to get familiar with. The
instruction book is a little confusing. The initial setup is not covered until 3/4 of the way
through the instructions. it would have been nice if the info was placed near the beginning.
There is a base control but no treble control. Both would have been better.
