Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod® Interface Adapter

by Tim Sprinkle

You've loaded your music library onto your iPodĀ®, now take it to go. Pioneer's CD-IB100ii iPod interface adapter makes it easy and convenient to connect your iPod to a compatible Pioneer stereo, so you can listen to music files through your mobile audio system.

For starters, the CD-IB100ii allows you to control iPod playback right from your Pioneer's faceplate. You'll be able to scroll through your playlists and pick out the tracks you want to hear, while leaving your iPod stored safely out of the way. The interface will even let you use the touchscreen on select Pioneer stereos and video screens to manage the iPod.

The adapter sends song and artist information directly to your radio's display for easy navigation between tracks. If your stereo has an Organic EL display, you'll get multiple lines of information for album, artist, and song name. The CD-IB100ii also recharges the iPod's battery while it's connected, while a pass-through port on the adapter accommodates another Pioneer component like a satellite radio or a CD changer.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod® Interface Adapter

Written By Bill, Grand Rapids, MI on Monday, May 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Interface worked right away & was easy to install. Only downside is it will only fully control (charge etc.) a hand full of iPods. Crutchfield was the only place I found a chart with that information, even though it was a little dated. Provides track info and general control with my 6th gen. Nano.
    Pros:
    Easy to install and use.
    Cons:
Limited number of full control iPods listed.

    Pioneer Radio + iPod adapter

Written By Reed, Walton, N.Y. on Friday, March 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased Pioneer MVH-P47DH radio from Crutchfield several years ago for my GMC truck.( I love it radio and truckk ) My kids gave me a hand me down iPod nano. I wanted to listen to the iPod in my truck. I remembered seeing a connection on the back of the radio when I installed it. I called Crutchfield and asked if the radio I had purchased from them had a connection for connecting an iPod. Buzz told me it did. So I ordered the Pioneer CD-IB100ii interface adapter. It came in 2 days and I installed it. It's great and it's great dealing with Crutchfield and their support staff. They keep a record of your purchases and know what will fit in your vehicle. Thanks Crutchfield !
    Pros:
Very easy to install. Tap into 12V supply and a good ground, then plug in 2 wires and you are all done.
    Cons:
Routing the wires and finding a location took the most time but was really a piece of cake. The whole job took a half an hour.

    iPod Touch

Written By Magnate, Tucson, AZ on Tuesday, November 01, 2011

For the past 10 years, I've bought Pioneer head units. I love them for their ease of self-installation and the sound produced out of relatively inexpensive speakers. I originally bought this for my 5th gen iPod classic, which it worked perfectly for. It played the iPod and charged it. Due to living in Arizona and me stupidly leaving my iPod in the car all the time, it overheated during the summer and something inside melted rendering my iPod useless. I read the Crutchfield specs on this adapter thinking my new iPod touch (4th gen) I bought wouldn't work with it (I didn't try using it in my car for months, I was listening to burned MP3 CDs), but it does. It plays the music wonderfully. But it just doesn't charge it. After finding out that this adapter does actually play a newer gen iPods, I'm very happy with the product (considering most of the iPod capable head units out there don't charge the iPod anyway). What's the difference between this adapter (if you already own a Pioneer head unit) and a new head unit for $300 - $400 that does the same exact thing?
    Pros:
It has worked with every iPod I've owned.
    Cons:
It doesn't charge newer generation iPod's.

    deh-p980mp

Written By D, massachusetts on Monday, August 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This works great with my premier 980mp receiver and 2nd gen nano. Hit the "list" button and your ipod screen is on your radio. Scroll through using the rotary knob to select artists, albums, playlists, songs, etc. I bought this along with the used nano so I could stop burning mp3 files to a cd. Now I have 2gb of music in my vehicle all the time. And it's easy to navigate it. I didn't give it the 5th star because when scrolling through a long list i.e. "artists" you have to wait a second for the info to appear during fast scrolling. Keeps my ipod charged too.

    Gets the job done

Written By Whisker, MO on Friday, November 05, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this so I can play my iPod thru the CD changer controls on my Pioneer
DEH-P77DH in dash CD player that was built in 2001.

(For those who don't know, a DEH-P77DH is a 1.5 din CD player that fits in GM
and Chrysler radio openings perfectly and requires NO adapter! A CD player
Pioneer should still make but doesn't - they must have quit making them in 2002
    or so.)

Anyways everything works great like it should EXCEPT on my CD player's face it
doesn't display the name of the iPod track like the instructions say it's
supposed to. Maybe it's too old of a unit to feature this function? I don't
know, but other than that everything works fine, even on an 8 year old CD player.

    I loved it until.....

Written By MIchael, Suffolk, Va. on Tuesday, January 05, 2010

I installed this unit in my truck a couple of months ago. It works really well and I can hide
the Ipod in the glove box. The only problem that I have now is that my wife got me a new
Ipod Nano for Christmas so she could get hers back from the truck and it will not charge
the new Ipod. Kind of took the wind out of my sail. Everything else seems to work the
same as the older version of the Nano. Well maybe Pioneer will come out with an
updated version of this interface. I would defintely get it again.

    iPod adaptor nearly Perfect

Written By mcdowell, Jacksonville, Fl on Wednesday, December 09, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using the Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPodĀ® to play my nano. It works great. The only complaint I have is not being able to charge the nano battery while having
it pluged into this adaptor. So now I must purchase yet another cord to plug into the cigarette lighter for re-charging the nano while away from home.

Otherwise, the onscreen interface works fine and lets me play my tunes like I want -- which is the whole objective of these players, right?

Works Well but connector could use improvment

Written By Shane, Pleasanton, Ca on Thursday, August 06, 2009

The unit was a very easy addition. The install took just a few minutes. Overall I am happy with the unit, I installed it in my WRX and later on my Suburban. The only complaint is the iPod connector. After about 8 months it was not plugging into the iPod quite right and since it is hard wired to the box, you cannot replace it. I no longer use my iPhone, I have a gen 1 iPod in the glove box that I take out once a month to load new songs on, so the flaky connection is not really an issue.

Now a days it seems most head units have the ability to connect to an iPod built in. I think it is time to upgrade to one of those.

Written By joeldjro, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico on Thursday, May 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been an owner of ipods since the second generation and I have tried almost everything for controlling my ipods. This product is a must own if you own a pioneer head unit. I have installed 4 pioneer receivers and with this, the sound quality and controlling is the best. It does not charge the ipod thouch second generation but for other ipods work, haven't tried the iPhone yet. I don't give it a 5 because it does not charge my current ipod.

I put this under the front passenger seat of our clk320, it is mated to a 3 year old pioneer head unit and works great! plenty of cable length for ipod cable to run to center console armrest with 18" or so loose to make connection to ipod easy. Works with first gen iphone and ipod, thats what we have and it works fine.

Great, but not up to date

Written By Adam, Jamestown, KY on Friday, November 07, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice piece. The sound quality is amazing, and I had it installed in 20 minutes. I have the pioneer 6 disc in dash changer, and now I dont have to fill those slots with mp3 discs. The downside to this adapter is the length of time it takes to cycle through the songs, and the fact that it WILL NOT charge newer Ipods, such as my 5th gen. NANO. These are minor inconveniences to me since I leave the songs on random anyway, and the ipod will run for 2-3 days on a full charge. I do hope eventually pioneer solves this charging issue, but as I said it is a minor inconvenience.

    Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod® Interface Adapter

Written By Lisa, Plain, WI on Friday, October 10, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the interface for use with a Pioneer Avic N3, XM w/NavTraffic and TV tuner. Has worked as advertised with no problems, except for the installation instructions. The installer was not familiar with my older head unit and the instructions do not say how to hook this up to the unit that has other components added. A quick call to the great people at Crutchfield Support did the trick! They explained the procedure and even emailed a diagram for 'stringing' the components in the correct order. I am very happy with my purchase!

    Installed in a 2000 Chevy Astro w/ Pioneer DEH-P77DH

Written By Richard, Lakewood,CA on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

I purchased the Pioneer i-pod interface adapter along with the the new
Pioneer DEH-P77DH both were easy to install per Crutchfield's intructions.

both work great together. no problems, easy to operate. the only thing
that disapointed me which is because the DEH-P77DH is an older model and
has limited line of character on the screen so if its a song with a long name
it will be cut short. But hey, thats no biggie to be cause everything else is
    great.

Great product. Only thing I wish it had was better tape for the velcro and scrolling titles on the deck while the music was playing. So happy I bought this and have it installed. The cord is a little longer than I would have liked it, but it does give me the option of running it under the carpet and into the center console. Hope everyone else is as satisfied as I am.

    Why Bother

Written By Gary, Englewood, NJ on Tuesday, May 06, 2008

This would be great if you have only 5 CDs on your ipod. I have over 250 CDs on mine and would probably be considered a light user. The interface on my AVIC-Z2 takes forever to scroll though my ipod library. By the time I find the songs I want to play, I have arrived at my destination. Pioneer can do better than this!

    Works Good, not functional though

Written By Kevin, Charlotte, NC on Monday, April 14, 2008

    It sounds nice that
    this will work with
    a pioneer headset
    and you can change
    songs with the
    radio, but what they
    don't tell you is
    that you can ONLY
    change songs with
    the radio. If, like
    me, you have over
    2,000 songs it is
    VERY annoying to
    have to search one
    by one to find the
    song you want to
    hear. Other than
    that it sounds great
    and is useful.
    Although you can not
    watch videos with
    it, once you plug it
    into your iPod it
    shows a screen that
    you can not change.
    Also does not work
    with the iPhone.

    Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod® Interface Adapter

Written By John, Charlottesville, VA on Thursday, January 10, 2008

I received this adapter after it was back ordered, iPods must be a popular gift this year.

The sound quality is amazing, I didn't think my stereo could sound this good for so little money. I have a cheep Pioneer head unit ( Pioneer DEH-P4800MP ), a 500 watt sub woofer, MB Quart mid/tweeters, and the new iPod Nano 8Gb's. I don't see any lag in the controls, but the display only shows 20 characters. Controls work as they should, up on the control pad goes to the next artist and left or right changes songs, band button changes genres. The head unit plays mp3 tracks so data CDs with mp3 files sounded better than normal CD's, but the iPod tops anything I've heard before iPods interfaces.
