Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XHD6430

by Zak Billmeier

The Dual XHD6430 CD receiver gives you lots of features that'll rock your road trip or commute without stretching your budget. Whether you're looking for better AM/FM sound quality and increased programming choices offered by free HD Radio® broadcasts, or you just like to listen to tunes from your iPod®, the XHD6430 makes it happen with intuitive control and ease.

Playing your tunes
Plug your iPod into the front-panel USB input, and you can browse your music library with the XHD6430's controls. This lets you stash your iPod in a secure place and keep it charged while you drive. The USB slot is also perfect for connecting thumb drives or other portable music players. The CD drive plays your favorite MP3 or WMA files, so you can load a disc with multiple albums or stacks of files and hit the road. A front-panel auxiliary input makes the XHD6430 even more versatile, providing a convenient place to plug in your portable player or a Dock & Play satellite radio.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

iTunes® tagging
Ever hear a tune you like on the radio but couldn't remember it when you got home? With your iPod connected and an HD Radio station tuned in, you can "tag" the songs you like to buy later on iTunes. Once a song is tagged, you'll be reminded to purchase it from the iTunes store the next time you sync your iPod on your home computer.

Power and tone
Dual designed the XHD6430 to play great no matter what the source. The built-in amplifier boasts plenty of power, to improve your music's clarity and impact, and five selectable EQ curves sculpt the tone to match your car's environment. The two sets of preamp outputs allow plenty of options if you're considering adding amps and subs. The rear output can be switched to subwoofer mode, giving you control over your bass level from the driver's seat.

Talk hands-free
Have a Bluetooth phone? Add the optional Bluetooth module and you'll be able to answer and place calls on your compatible cell phone using the receiver's front panel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The head unit features a manual fold-down, detachable faceplate and comes supplied with a hard plastic carrying case. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

LCD Display: The head unit features a 2-line black/white LCD display.

Display Priority: You can set the unit to a source display or clock display priority. When set to source display priority, the radio tuner frequency, CD track/elapsed time, selected MP3/WMA information (track name, directory name, title, artist, or album), or Aux display will be displayed.

Clock Display: Normally, the clock display illuminates only when the unit is on. You can program it so the clock is displayed when the ignition key is turned on and the unit is off.

Illumination Dimmer: The head unit's display features three illumination settings. You can choose from Low, Med, or High.

      Audio Section

      CEA-2006 Compliant Amplifier: The Dual XHD6430 features a CEA-2006 Compliant rated amplifier that offers 17 watts RMS x 4 channels in 4 ohms at 1% THD+N with a Signal-To-Noise Ratio of 80dBA.

Selectable Preamp Outputs: The XHD6430 features front and rear preamp outputs. The rear preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass non-fading subwoofer preamp output. The selectable subwoofer preamp output offers separate volume control from 0-12 to enhance the sound of your connected amplifier and subwoofer without effecting the rest of your car audio speaker system.

Preset EQ Curves: You can choose from six preset curves: Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, and Rock. Any adjustment to the bass or treble settings automatically cancels the current EQ curve.

Bass And Treble: The head unit's Bass and Treble can be independently adjusted from -6 to +6 dB.

Loudness Curve: You can activate this feature to enhance the bass and treble frequencies when listening to music at low volumes.

Source Audio Memory: Individual bass and treble settings are retained in memory for AM, FM, CD, USB, and AUX modes. This allows you to save the Bass and Treble settings separately for each mode.

Source Volume Level: The source volume level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (AM, FM, CD, AUX, USB and Bluetooth). You can set the source volume level (-6 to +6) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Turn-on Volume: You can preset the unit's volume when it is powered on. Each time the unit is turned on, the volume is reset to the preset level regardless of the volume level when the unit was last turned off.

Beep Confirmation: You can enable or disable beep confirmation for the head unit's control buttons.

      Radio Functions

Built-In HD Tuner: In addition to the unit's standard analog AM/FM tuner, the head unit features a built-in HD AM/FM tuner. With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD radio delivers near CD quality sound to FM broadcasts, and FM sound to AM broadcasts.

Note: Your local stations must be broadcasting HD AM/FM broadcasts to receive HD Radio content. No subscriptions fee needed for HD Radio programming.

HD Seek Mode: In addition to searching through both analog and digital stations, you can search only HD stations by using the head unit's HD Seek Mode. During this mode the head unit will skip over all analog stations and tune to only HD Radio stations.

Multicasting: This head unit also supports HD Radio multicasting and allows multicast HD Radio stations to be stored as presets.

Preset Tuning: You can store up to 18 FM stations and 12 AM stations, including HD Radio stations.  The head unit can automatically store the six strongest stations in the current band selected. Multicast channels are not stored during Auto Preset and must be manually preset.

Scan Tuning: The Scan Tuning feature momentarily previews strong stations on the current band, pausing for fives seconds at each station.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tagging feature of the XHD6430 allows you to "Tag" songs that are playing on HD Radio station and enables them to be purchase later through iTunes. With the touch of a button the unit will remember the title and artist song information, and then transfer that information to your  iPod the next time you connect it to the XHD6430 using the supplied 2-wire cable. The following iPods support iTunes Tagging.

      • iPod classic (80/120/160GB)
      • iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th gen)
      • iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd gen)
      • iPhone (2G/3G/3GS)

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The XHD6430 supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

SRAM Buffer: An internal SRAM buffer provides ESP (Electronic Skip Protection) to virtually eliminate skipping of your MP3/WMA CD-R/RW discs and allows alphanumeric or direct track search even while a song is currently playing.

DSP Processor: The head unit's powerful on-board DSP processor decodes MP3/WMA compressed audio files while maintaining near-CD sound quality.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files that have been recorded with constant bit rate (MP3: 32-320 kbps/WMA: 32-192 kbps) or variable bit rate compression on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded using ISO 9660 level 1 or level 2, Yellow Book MODE 1, or Yellow Book MODE 2 FORM 1. In addition, this unit is compatible with ID3 Tag version 1.0 to 2.0. Discs should be recorded with a maximum of 256 folders and files and 8 folder levels.

File/Folder Navigation: You can search for all available files within a particular folder.

Playback Modes: The XHD6430 supports Repeat, Random, and Intro playback modes.

      Aux/USB/iPod Connection

USB Port: The XHD6430 features a front-panel USB port for connecting an external USB mass storage device. The head unit's USB port allows you to play MP3 (32-320kbps constant or variable bit rates) and WMA (32-192kbps constant or variable bit rates) files from most mass storage USB devices formatted in  FAT or FAT32 file system. The XHD6430 has a playback capacity of 48,896 MP3/WMA files with 127maximum number of folders, 382 maximum number of files in each folder and 8 maximum number of folder levels. In addition, the USB input also supports ID3 tags, version 1.0-2.0. The XHD6430 will display either elapsed time (default), track number, clock, track name, directory name, title, artist or album when connecting and playing a USB external source. Your connected portable USB mass storage device will also charge through this head unit's USB port. The head unit does not need to be in the USB mode in order to charge your connected device through the USB port. The XHD6430 offers the following playback and search options through its USB connection.

      • File/Folder Navigation: You can search for all available files within a particular folder.
      • Repeat: Track (continuously repeats selected track), Folder (continuously repeats all files in selected folder)
      • Random: All (plays all tracks in random order), Folder (plays all tracks in folder in random order)
      • Intro: All (plays first 10 seconds of each track on device), Folder (plays first 10 seconds of each track in folder)

Note: MP3/WMA playback sequence is based on the order in which the files are copied to your USB device and begins in the root folder. Any empty folders or folders that do not include MP3/WMA files are skipped.

iPod Operation: The front-panel USB port can also be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the XHD6430 using your iPod or iPhone's USB/docking cable. Once you have connected your iPod/iPhone and set the XHD6430 in iPod/iPhone mode, your connected iPod/iPhone will automatically begin playback (if a song is playing on the iPod/iPhone before it is connected, it will continue to play). The XHD6430 provides audio playback, navigation control, display information, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. Your iPod/iPhone's controls will be locked during connection. The XHD6430 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and support the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of July 2010):

Nice stereo, but the radio reception is lacking

Written By xspook, Florida on Sunday, October 14, 2012
Installed in a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this for about 2 months and mostly use it for listening to the radio and playing MP3's from a USB memory stick. For the money, it's a great buy. It has plenty of power for my 2002 Ford Sport Trac with factory speakers and factory subwoofer.
      Pros:
Has USB input and HD radio. You can take a 2, 8, 10 Gb or larger USB drive, load it with thousands of songs, set it to random and you'll never have to worry about a scratched CD again.
      Cons:
Radio reception is lacking. My factory radio was much better. When using HD radio, the FM stations often will have moments of signal drop, where the audio will be echoed. When set to HD and listening to AM, it's unlistenable. There are frequent electronic interference sounds that are difficult to describe, but will have you reaching for the power button the moment it happens. Once HD is disabled, the problem goes away. I would actually prefer an SD card input, but the USB suffices.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It broke today 6 months after installation. the face plate FELL OFF when the latch plastic deteriorated. I rarely mess with this feature and remove the plate only once or twice but the latch is now irreparable. I hope to replace with help from Dual or Crutchfield.
      Pros:
      cheap, easy to install
      Cons:
Hard to work with Ipod, broke in 6 months.

      Overall Very Good Head Unit

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been satisfied with everything about this head unit so far, it's been great in my is300. It blows the stock stereo out of the water and is just as good as the $150 sony I bought for my 4Runner a few years ago.

      Dual XHD6430

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really cool product. Super easy to install and use. Sound is great. The radio reception is a little staticky but I think I may need to replace the antenna and wire. I won't really use the radio anymore now that I can play MP3 files and my iPod.

      Great Unit

Written By WillG, Morriston, FL on Thursday, September 20, 2012
Installed in a 2006 GMC Canyon
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my mother-in-law, she is still getting used to functions, but she's liking it so far, USB input lets her leave her ipod at home, and 3.5mm allows her to use her phone trough the stereo. Loves that part. Sound-wise does sound good even with stock speakers which I'm replacing next. Remote has just enough buttons so you can learn them quickly without having to take yours eyes off the road, or pumping the volume while seating outside of car.
      Pros:
USB, 3.5mm, ipod connectivity, bright clear display, remote control
      Cons:
Buttons are a little hard to read at first, but getting used to them should be no problem.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit plays well. I'm not sure why, but most of the time when turning on the ignition, the unit powers up but no sound. You have to select a station other than the one it's already on to get it to play. It looks attractive in my Chevy Blazer. A flash drive was readable and worked the best. A CD of mp3s made on my desktop would not play (ERROR 2). A CD burned on a former computer did play successfully, but skipped in places. I have observed no skipping when playing a commercial CD.
      Pros:
The sound quality is acceptable. The large number of presets (18) makes it nice when going on regular out of town trips. Display options are good. Not a fancy display, but for the price, it's great!
      Cons:
Some CDs of mp3 files tend to skip, even while the vehicle is not in motion. CDs with mp3s burned on a desktop DVD don't seem to play. Installation was a bit more involved that originally thought.

Was a bit weary of the price being so cheap. Once I got it installed, it made my 88 Jeep YJ speakers actually sound semi decent. I love the USB port, I plug my iPhone in and let it charge while listening to music. Also if I have my GPS going on my phone, it will interrupt the music and give directions through the speakers. The removable face also proves to be useful, it is nice to have the option of making it look like nothing is there, especially when you on a older jeep.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 of these radios. One for myself and one for a friend. I only listem to am talk or home made mp3 cd's. After only 2 weeks of use on 8/2/12 the radio would not turn on. The on button was lit but the radio would not turn on. Reading the truble shooting pages no mention was made of the problem. The manual did say that with the ignition off you could push the eject button and the cd would eject. I did that and with the ignition on and the cd removed the radio could be turned on and played cds like nothing ever hapened. On 8/3/12 I told my friend, who only listens to the mp3 how to fix her radio should the same thing happen to her. 8/4/12 my friend tells me her radio did the same thing but her eject button would not go in. She had never ejected her mp3 cd from the first time she put it in {3 weeks} so we do not know if it ever worked or not. She is going to the installer to get it checked in a few days. Hope other piople have better luck..
      Pros:
The cd player has ok tone Quality.
      Cons:
cd player quit playing after two weeks. My friends cd player quit playing after 3 weeks. The radio sounds like it is not quit on the station

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace the dead radio in my 1972 VW convertible. Hey: new school meets old cool, right? It only took less than 30 minutes of modding to get this unit to fit. The unit works great. Instructions are clear, functionality is top-notch. I was delighted with the price (open box and all). And if anything goes wrong, I know Crutchfield's got my back. All in all, a solid unit.
      Pros:
Ease of installation, superb documentation, great supporting hardware. USB & audio-in available from front panel. Small size.
      Cons:
Controls are a bit non-traditional for my taste--the volume, for instance, is in the middle of the unit, rather than towards the left side where most companies put it.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in my Toyota Tacoma. Mainly picked this because of the USB reader and the ability to play MP3 CDs. After a few days it seemed to be 'dead' except the power button still had a red glow. I removed the radio and checked my connections. It started working. Happened again a few days later. I came back here and read the other reviews saying that this tends to happen and the solution is to press the reset button under the faceplate. I thought about sending the radio back and getting a different unit but after looking at the other radios in my budget, I decided that this is the one I wanted, regardless of the 'glitch.' Problem hasn't reoccurred. I suspect the problem is either caused by heat or something to do with the USB feature. I don't have the bluetooth accessory or an iPod but might get them in the future now that I've decided to keep the radio.
      Pros:
Sounds good. Ability to play MP3s on disk or USB drive. More features that I may use in the future.
      Cons:
Had to be reset twice in the first week after I got it.

      Latest HD unit shows improvement

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the two previous generations of Dual Single DIN HD stereos. With each generation the operation got better, but even with the previous one the build quality was lacking and it was a simple mechanical failure of a switch on the faceplate that did it in. On this version the build quality is noticably better, I expect years of good service. The HD performance is MUCH better, and the IPOD and Data Stick file navigation show much improvement. For the money I'd say you likely won't go wrong, and in very many ways it is worlds better than the entry level HD offering from Pioneer - but to be fair that Pioneer deck is a train wreck.
      Pros:
Better HD performance, data file navigation. Easy to use. Very inexpensive.
      Cons:
Buid quality not as good as many others.

I was really happy with this purchase, both the radio and the awesome Crutchfield service. Crutchfield's whole system is great - website, ordering, shipping, tech support- the best! The radio worked really well and you cannot get another unit with even close to the features for less. Somehow Crutchfield has much better prices than everyone. All the features worked well. I really liked how the HD radio and iPod support worked. Sound quality was not amazing but still good esp if you consider how this radio has basically every cool feature. Only problem I had was that the CD was skipping (the anti-skip buffer was not working). I called Tech Support and they told me to push the reset button on the radio and the problem was solved. Highly recommend Crutchfield and this radio.
      Pros:
Lots of features. Crutchfield support. Great price.
      Cons:
Display a little bright even when turned down to low and a technical glitch with cd skipping which was resolved.

Add car stereos to the list of electronic items that have greatly decreased in price over the years. I was looking for an inexpensive radio to replace the factory cassette player in a 20 year old car that died. This more than fits the bill. Many features, HD radio, fairly easy to use, better quality - more powerful sound. I just put up with the factory radio and bad speakers had no plans to replace them until the radio quit. The only annoyance so far in this unit is that I cannot leave a disc in the CD player and listen to another sound source.
      Pros:
HD radio, relatively easy to use, inexpensive, not bad looking, powerful sound
      Cons:
Cannot listen to another sound source while a CD is in the player.

Great deck for the price. Installed in an 88 Jeep Wrangler with ease. The HD stations are great in my area, also nice because my antenna broke off about 3 years ago.

I would not recommend the in-dash kit the offer with this unit - 142FJ1550MFord/Mercury/Chrysler 1986-Up Kit E/S. It was inexpensive, but in my opinion a waste of money. Poorly made and does not support the head unit at all. I used a top mount bracket that I had from my previous install, just had to modify slightly to get screws into the new head unit.

All and all I am very happy with the sound quality and options. USB for Ipod/Iphone which you can control with the remote and it charges the device. Nice blue illumination display and song info.

      Trouble with firmware lock-ups

Written By MikeG, Lake Zurich,IL on Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Problems with the firmware are an issue. I'm looking for a fix now. Unit started locking up every few days about a week ago. Unit worked OK the first three weeks although it does have an issue with some USB folders/files with music on them. On 2 larger drives that had GB+ of music it just locked up. I placed a smaller amount of music data (maybe 100-200 songs) in the root directory of a clean USB drive and it read the songs OK. Now though it is having issues locking up and you need to pop the cover off and reset the unit which clears all the radio settings. I'm not sure if this started happening because we began to try other "functions" and settings. We are looking for a solution now. I will post an update if these get fixed.

Also the HD radio seems to have some trouble locking/staying locked on HD stations. I don't have a reference point on how problematic this is compare to others because this is my first HD radio.
      Pros:
Cool radio with lots of features for the $.
      Cons:
Lockups and resets are annoying and erases/clears all your AM/FM station presets.
