Our take on the Sony Xplōd™ XS-GTX1642

Sony's XS-GTX1642 6-3/4" speakers feature woofer cones made from Highly Oriented Polyolefine, a proprietary material that's lighter and stronger than polypropylene for better energy efficiency and power handling. These cones recover very quickly from one note to the next, increasing clarity in the vocal range. Sony's unique treated cloth surround is light and thin along the inner edge for quicker response, and thickly reinforced around the outer edge to keep the cone in place during heavy use, which means better power handling and increased accuracy.

Each 4-way speaker takes care of the rest of the musical details with a 1-7/16" midrange driver, dome tweeter, and dome supertweeter. Sony blends these complementary elements together to produce well-balanced sound, from the lowest bass note to the highest cymbal crash. High-frequency response extends beyond the normal limits of human hearing, producing the overtones that make the instruments sound more natural. Sony includes grilles for custom installations.

Features

Woofers: The woofers are made of Highly Oriented Polyolefine (H.O.P.) plus aramid fiber. Using high-tech fibers aligned under extreme pressure, Sony's exclusive H.O.P. is lighter & stronger than polypropylene. The result is greater linearity, smoother response, and better sound.

Stroke Stabilizer Surround: Sony developed the Stroke Stabilizer Surround to take advantage of the quick transient response and low weight of a thin surround, along with the superior back-pressure resistance of a thick surround. Radial ridges of thicker material are added along the surround, with the inner side handling the detailed strokes, and the entire surround resisting the back-pressure during higher power passages. This balance results in a speaker with high power handling, accuracy throughout the power range, and low distortion.

Midrange: Each speaker has a 1-7/16" PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) balanced dome midrange for fast transients with lower distortion.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 7/16" dome tweeter and a 11/32" dome super tweeter for a wide soundstage. Both the tweeter and super tweeter are made of PEI (Poly-Ether Imide).

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a variety of 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" openings.

These don't normally fit my Dodge Neon doors, as the helpful tech guy said but, with a little fab work i had no problems putting door panels back on. I'm very happy with the sound.

Pros:

nice brackets included to ease install, talking to helpful tech line helped me resolve fit issues.

Cons:

none, enjoying them everyday.

The bracket that came with the Sony 6 3/4 inch 4 way speakers was too small for the speakers to screw in to my 2005 Audi A4. Unfortunately, there are no other brackets that fit for my car. I had to return them for the 5 1/4 2 way speakers, which I am upset about because they larger ones were the same price. I would give this 1 star but the customer service was superb, and really helped me out, I just wished that I would have known initially that they would not fit.

Did not fit in my car when the website said it would.

Just installed these speakers on my 2002 Silverado, and the installation couldn't have been any easier! A little over an hour for both speakers. Removed old speakers, and installed new speakers using the same screws that were on the old ones. Just an FYI..original screws have a star head on them. These speakers replaced the rear speakers in a crewcab. The speakers sound AWESOME over the stock. I would definately recommend these speakers. I have some Alpines installed in the front, and the stock radio. Will be replacing the radio with a Sony Mex-4000 as soon as it arrives. Looking forward to how it all sounds together. Crutchfield is a great place to buy products, service is great, and the products deliver on time.

Pros:

Easy and fast install for my application, speakers sound great, good highs, and bass sounds good.

I bought these to replace original speakers in an old work car. I am a musician so i like good sounding music. I already had an amp and subs to use, but i wanted to try these 4 way speakers thinking, since it is a work car if these speakers sound good enough i won't have to put an amp in. I am glad i did. These sound fantastic! Nice lows and highs are not too high. Also i haven't had em long but they dont crackle or distort when cranked either.

Pros:

4 way high wattage has great all around sound.

Cons:

MADE IN CHINA.

Picked up a set to replace a pair of factory speakers in my 2004 Trailblazer that had bit the dust. I pulled the door panels, pull the speaker mount, popped out the old factory speaker and the new speaker fit in the space with no issues. A couple of things I had to do. First I had to remove the alignment pins and then drill a hole in the side where the factory wire comes through to allow the included jumpers to pass through. Besides that they went in with no problems. The speakers sound better than the old factory ones even when they were new, but they are not going to blow you away.

Pros:

Easy to install, sound better than factory, factory to speaker jumpers were included for free.

Cons:

Bass on the weak side.

sounds good but no base and does not handle the stereo which is nothing great but better than factory still. If you want clear sound these will work but I would recomend a bass tube or something to even out the lows.

Excellent investment for a budget build

Installed these in my mom's Chevrolet Tahoe's front doors last year. They replaced the original AC Delco units, which were completely gone to the point that you couldn't make out the vocals in anything. Now with these, you can hear lyrics like the artist was screaming them at you in the car. They've stood up to everything I could throw at them and taken it in stride. Everything from Vanilla Ice to Uncle Luke, to NPR Radio comes through crisp, clear, and most of all balanced. I have to admit, cassette tapes have a bit more hiss to them than before, and the highs are a bit much for some people, but they also are completely fine at 70 with the windows down and the stereo up as they are at 35 with it at barely a whisper. The only downfall is the bass does not come through as strongly as the originals (but that's a good thing since in one song, the originals died) but it's still enough to rattle the door panels. If you were to compare the originals as a 10, these would be about an 8. Even with the bass at it's limit though, the vocals don't shutter and the highs don't get harsh.

The only difference I can see between mine and the ones displayed here are the grilles are all silver and don't have the mesh behind them, the midranges are blue, and the silver ring around them is glossy black. Other than that, they have a different sticker on the back with more graphics, but its the same thing once you get down to it.

Pros:

Crisp higs, excellent mids, even sound

Cons:

Bass not as much as stock, but close
