Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

Our take on the Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR

by David Brown

The flexibility of 42X zoom

Don't let a lack of zoom range restrict your shooting options. Fujifilm's FinePix HS50EXR has a massive 42X zoom lens that gives you the ability to shoot subjects near, far, and really far. Just because your son is stuck playing left field doesn't mean you can't get detailed close-ups of him from the bleachers. Get in tight with this camera's incredible range and manually adjustable zoom barrel, for framing your shot the old-fashioned way. Or pull back and photograph those objects that are literally right in front of you, with Super Macro mode for subjects as close as 1 centimeter.

Manual exposure controls and easy auto modes

The HS50EXR's advanced CMOS sensor and EXR II processor form a potent imaging combination, for fast response times and sharp image quality. In addition to standard contrast auto focus, the HS50EXR also uses phase detection auto focus for quick focusing while photographing fast action. So your photos will be crisp and clear even with moving subjects. What about low light? The HS50EXR's sensor can capture rich color and contrast, even in poorly lit settings. Manual exposure controls give you the freedom to compose your own shots, or let EXR Auto mode adjust the camera's settings for you based on 108 scene recognition patterns.

Bracketing and filter effects

Want even more cool shooting options? Dynamic range and exposure bracketing capture multiple shots of the same scene with varied light settings to help you get just the right contrast and color. You can also bracket with Film Simulation mode, a unique feature that re-creates the look of three classic Fujifilm color films coveted by professional photographers in the pre-digital age. Film Simulation can also be applied as a creative filter, and eight other filters like Partial Color and Soft Focus let you alter perspective or highlight certain subjects within the frame.

Lots of ways to line up shots

Shooting in bright sunlight? Use the high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It's equipped with an eye sensor, so it switches on as soon as you look through it. You also get a high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor, which pulls out for multi-angle viewing. It's perfect for shooting from odd angles as well as checking out your photos and HD video, or showing them off to friends.

      Features

42x Zoom Lens: The Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR is equipped with an f/2.8-5.6 Super EBC Fujinon lens with a 42x optical zoom to let you get close to your subject. The 4.4mm-185mm focal length is equivalent to 24-1000mm in 35mm photography. The lens has a 58mm filter thread so you can add an optional protective filter if you desire.

Note: The HS50EXR has a manual zoom control.

Intelligent Digital Zoom: The Intelligent Digital Zoom can be used to magnify the image by 1.4x or 2.0x. With the Intelligent Digital Zoom, the total magnification is 84x, with the (35mm) equivalent focal length range of up to 2000x.

Vari-angle LCD Monitor: The HS50EXR has a 3" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 920,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode. The monitor can be swiveled horizontally, and rotated 270° to allow you to view the monitor from virtually any angle.

Electronic Viewfinder: In addition to the LCD monitor, the camera has a 0.2" electronic viewfinder with 920,000 dots, and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage. The camera has an eye sensor that will automatically switch the image from the monitor to the viewfinder when you bring the camera up to your eye.

BSI EXR CMOS Image Sensor: The FinePix HS50EXR features a new 1/2" EXR CMOS II image sensor with 16-megapixel resolution. Coupled with the EXR Processor II, the camera can deliver high-speed continuous shooting at full resolution, fast startup time, and beautiful images in low-light situations.

EXR Auto: In the new EXR Auto with Motion Detection mode, the camera recognizes 10 basic types of scene: Landscape, Night, Night (Tripod), Macro, Beach, Sunset, Snow, Sky, Greenery, Sky & Greenery, and Auto. It also determines whether or not a person is present, and how much light is available. Assigning one or more of the EXR sensor modes (HR, SN, or DR), the EXR Auto mode optimizes exposure, white balance, focus, color, and tonality accordingly. The shooting data is recorded, so you can search through your photos by scene type, enabling you to find your pictures quickly and easily.

Recording Media: Still images and movies are recorded onto the camera's 25 MB internal memory or optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards.

Q Button: The innovative Q Button, located on the upper left side of the back panel, lets you skip directly to frequently used shooting menus, such as ISO Sensitivity, White Balance, and Film Simulation. • Scene Position 1, 2: You can select a scene suited to the subject or shooting conditions, and save it in SP1 or SP2 memory for quick recall. Available scenes include Portrait, Portrait Enhancer, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Party, Flower, and Text.
      • P, S, A, M: Select one of the following exposure modes:
        • Program: The camera sets the shutter speed and aperture according to shooting conditions.
        • Shutter Priority: You select the shutter speed to capture the effect you desire, and the camera automatically sets the aperture according to shooting conditions.
        • Aperture Priority: You select the aperture to capture the depth of field you desire, and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed according to shooting conditions.
        • Manual: You manually set both the shutter speed and aperture for full control over the camera settings.
      • Custom: Lets you store and recall settings for P, S, A, M, and all EXR modes (except EXR Auto).
      • Motion Panorama: You can create sweeping panoramas in this mode by holding down the shutter release while panning. You can select a horizontal or vertical panorama in either direction. The completed panorama can be viewed on the camera.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, or 12800. The Auto setting will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. There are 4 automatic settings with a preset maximum sensitivity: Auto 3200, Auto 1600, Auto 800, and Auto 400. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

Film Simulation: The HS50EXREXR can simulate the effects of different kinds of film, including black-and-white. You can select one of the following options:

      • Provia/Standard: standard color reproduction
      • Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited for nature photos
      • Astia/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
      • B&W: standard black-and-white
      • Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light, and Custom (set by the camera for the specific lighting for the shot).

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in all modes except Auto, EXR Auto, Manual, and Fireworks.

Continuous Shooting: You can choose one of the following continuous shooting modes:

      • Top: Shoots consecutive shots while the shutter button is pressed. You can set the shooting rate at 16 fps (Max 5 frames), 11 fps (5 frames), 6 fps (5 frames), or 3 fps (13 frames--size M, S).
      • Best Frame Capture: The camera shoots a series of 7 consecutive shots starting before and ending after the shutter release button is pressed. You can choose a frame rate of 16, 11, 6, or 3 frames per second. You can also vary how the 7 frames are distributed before and after the button is pressed.
      • AE Bracketing: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera takes 3 shots: one at the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed by a pre-selected amount, and the third underexposed by the same amount. You can set the bracketing amount to 1 EV, 2/3 EV or 1/3 EV.
      • Film Simulation Bracketing: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera takes three shots at different film simulation settings: Provia/Standard for the first, Velvia/Vivid for the second, and Astia/Soft for the third.
      • Dynamic Range Bracketing: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera takes three shots at different dynamic range settings: 100% for the first, 200% for the second, and 400% for the third.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer.

Optical Image Stabilization: The HS50EXR utilizes powerful lens-shift type image stabilization, combined with motion detection, if desired. You can choose whether image stabilization is performed at all times when the camera is in shooting mode (continuous), or only when the shutter button is pressed halfway (shooting only). You can turn off image stabilization when using a tripod.

Auto Focus Area: The FinePix HS50EXR offers four auto focus area selections: Center (focuses on the central area), Multi (focuses on the center of the screen), Area (lets you change the position on the screen where the camera focuses), and Tracking (the camera tracks the subject within the frame). When focusing manually, the focusing ring used to move the focus closer or farther away.

Focus Modes: You can choose from the following focus modes:

      • Single: The camera focuses only when the shutter button is pressed halfway--good for stationary subjects.
      • Continuous: The camera continually focuses--choose for moving subjects.
      • Manual: You can focus manually using the focus ring on the lens, even after the camera auto-focuses on the subject.

Focus Range: The focus ranges according to shooting mode are as follows:

      • Normal:
        • 1.4' to infinity (wide angle)
        • 9.8' to infinity (telephoto)
      • Macro:
        • 0.2' to 9.8' (wide angle)
        • 8.2' to 16.4' (telephoto)
      • Super Macro: 0.3" to 3.2'

Super-Intelligent Flash: The FinePix HS50EXR has a built-in, manual pop-up flash with a range of 0.9' to 26.2' (Wide) and 8.2' to 13.1' (Telephoto). The Super-Intelligent Flash system instantly analyzes the scene based on such factors as the brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted for correct exposure. Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

      • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
      • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
      • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
      • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Flash Brightness Adjustment: The intensity of the flash can be adjusted to suit the photography conditions or to achieve a desired effect. You can adjust the flash in 5 steps from -2/3 EV to +2/3 EV in 1/3 EV increments.

Optional External Flash: The HS50EXR has a hot shoe that allows you to add an optional external flash unit, such as the Fujifilm EF20, EF42, or EF-X20.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits.

Light Metering: When Face Detection is off, you can select one of three Metering modes:

      • Multi: light metering where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure
      • Spot: light metering where the exposure is optimized for the center of the image
      • Average: light metering where an average value for the entire image is used

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Playback Zoom/Trimming: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies are saved at Medium, Small, or 640, depending upon the size of the original, and will have an aspect ratio of 4:3. The cropped copy will be saved as a separate file.

Playback Menu: The playback menu contains the following options:

      • Photobook Assist: Create books from your favorite photos
      • Erase: Erases all or only selected frames
      • Mark For Upload: Select pictures for upload to YouTube or Facebook using MyFinePix Studio (Windows only)
      • Slide Show: Displays the images in a slide-show. You can select two image transitions and two playback intervals.
      • Red Eye Removal: Reduces the red-eye in flash photos if detected
      • Protect: Protect selected pictures from accidental deletion
      • Crop: Create a cropped copy of the current picture
      • Resize: Create a small copy of the current picture
      • Image Rotate: Rotates pictures taken in tall orientation so they are displayed properly in the LCD monitor
      • Copy: Copy pictures from the internal memory to a memory card.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

      • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
      • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix HS50EXR is powered by the supplied NP-W126 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully-charged NP-W126 is good for approximately 500 shots. The supplied BC-W126 battery charger will charge an NP-W126 battery in about 150 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the LCD monitor to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu.

      FINEPIX HS50EXR

Written By MX2, PUTNAM, NY on Friday, May 24, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good camera over all with far reaching zoom. Resolution is of moderate quality despite the 16meg claim. The focus is quite temperamental, i.e. there were times when an image appears blurred but the same subject shot subsequently may be sharp. Inconsistencies generate unease to this photographer.
      Pros:
Good ergonomics, smart options, long battery life.
      Cons:
      Focus uncertainties and disappointing resolution
