Sound Ordnance

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

by Buck Pomerantz

Fill your vehicle with bass, not equipment

Want to put some bass to your vehicle without a lot of fuss? Sound Ordnance's B-8PTD powered subwoofer is the latest version of the B-8PT, one of our all-time best-selling compact powered subwoofers. Sound Ordnance built this new version to perform even better than its predecessor, putting a cool-running 125-watt amp and a rugged aluminum 8" sub in an extremely compact, solid ABS plastic enclosure,so you get years of bass satisfaction. This all-in-one unit frees you from having to deal with a separate sub, amp, and enclosure, saves you cargo space, and simplifies your wiring requirements. Whether it's mounted under your car seat or in an out-of-the-way location in the cab of your truck, this little workhorse will surprise you with its impressive bass and its ability to mesh perfectly with the rest of your system.

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered sub

This compact sub delivers strong bass without taking up much space.

Big bass from this tough little sub

A 125-watt RMS Class D amplifier powers the sub and lives on a compact circuit board mounted inside the enclosure. The sub's stiff 8" aluminum cone holds its shape even when playing hard, helping to keep the lowest notes clean, and ensuring a long life for the sub. You can adjust the low-pass filter, variable phase control, and bass boost to get the B-8PTD sounding perfect in your vehicle. Preamp- and speaker-level inputs allow convenient connection to just about any system, even a factory stereo.

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered subwoofer

The molded ABS enclosure houses a 125-watt amp and a tough little 8" sub.

Good design helps

The B-8PTD's tough outer casing of molded ABS plastic serves as the sub's sealed enclosure and can withstand some pretty extreme internal pressure changes with no reverberating or buzzing. Sound Ordnance conveniently located the neat, clean, easy-to-understand controls on one side, opposite all the connections, so you won't get tangled in wires as you tune your bass. The control knobs and switches aren't recessed, so you can make adjustments by hand, without the need for a tiny screwdriver.

Big sound, little space!

Written By Mojojimbo, London, KY on Tuesday, June 18, 2013

I just installed this today, and all I can say is..... WOW! If you have realistic expectations, you will be be extremely pleased with this product. But to get the optimum sound, you will need to use the low level (RCA) inputs.
Pros:
Small size, great sound.
Cons:
None yet.

Great bang for your buck

Written By Jerry in VA, Woodbridge, VA on Tuesday, June 18, 2013

For the money, you can't really go wrong with this all-in-one amp/subwoofer. It's a nice complement to any sound system with a lot of configuration options and the included adjustment dial is great if you want a little more or a little less bass across different genres or tracks.

I installed this in my F150 and it fit perfectly under the passenger front seat. I'm considering buying another one for another car.
Pros:
Size, thump, value, configuration options, quality
Cons:
Screw terminals are a little cheap. I mangled the screws trying to get things wired in at a funny angle.

Amazing bass in small package

Written By Paul, New York on Tuesday, June 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler with limited space. This unit fits perfectly under the back seat and I have made it hidden because I frequently take the hard top off during the summer and don't want it to get stolen. I have a lot of off road lights and power hogging equipment, so this was a great option in terms of electricity usage. Not only does it hit hard (I'm a heavy electronic/dub step listener),it has amazing quality. It fills in the low end that was missing with my alpine speakers and can quickly be adjusted from rock to bass music via the remote knob. I highly recommend buying this, no regrets so far and I'm excited for when it is fully broken in.
Pros:
Hits hard, fits everywhere, easy hook up, bass knob, construction, quality, doesn't wake the neighbors
Cons:
Nothing yet!

Quality item that does what it is supposed to. It fills in the low end for a factory system without compromising space.
Pros:
Small size, price, quality.
Cons:
Limits due to size limitations. Velcro as only attachment, but it works well.

Great Add-On

Written By Craig, Lexington, KY on Thursday, May 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to add a little kick to my Jeep Wrangler. I replaced the dash and roll bar speakers with some Kickers. Though a good upgrade from the factory system still not what I wanted. A Crutchfield adviser recommend this unit. I was a little leery of an all in one unit but this certainly fit the bill. It's not going to vibrate the car next to you (nor did I want it to) but it does provide a great sound experience even with the top down.
Pros:
Great sound, easy install.

Very nice sub in small package

Written By 08DodgeRam, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, May 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the B-8PTD as "scratch and dent" but I think the only issue was with the box itself. The unit arrived in perfect condition. I installed under rear bench seat of my 08 Dodge Ram. Running the power leads and signal leads down each side of the door trim was easy. The installation took about 2 hours total. It works very well with my Kenwood HU and really fills in the bass below 100hz with my Polk speakers. I prefer the "PTD" model over the "PT" due to the addition of a Class D Mosfet Amp. This is NOT a unit for those who like to show off at "loudness" competitions, but if you want to suppliment your system with a nice low-end for great overall sound quality, then this is the unit.
Pros:
Great sound in small, easy to install package.

Disappointing

Written By Justin, Indiana on Thursday, April 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered one of these based off of all of the good reviews. After hooking up the speaker it sounded decent (it completely misses notes under 150hz so if you like rap don't get it) but anytime I turned the car on or off it produced and extremely loud POP. Checked the ground, remote turn on wire, etc with no luck. Called Crutchfield and they said it was defected so they sent me another one and it also did the same thing. Finally, they recommended the kicker 11hs8 and shipped it to me. I installed this one using the existing wiring and WOW! No popping noise and It actually produces unbelievable low notes (while not as loud as my JL 12W3, it sounds just as good). Long story short: if you aren't picky and get a unit that isn't defected, the sound ordnance sounds okay for the money but if you want something for all types of music including rap, I would recommend the KICKER!!!
Pros:
plays higher bass pretty well
Cons:
Annoying POPPING sound and can't hit low notes at all

Looks like an 8" ... Sounds like a 10!

Written By Toddman, N.Tx on Friday, March 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded the stereo in my '00 Sierra extended cab when my speakers started to go out a few years back. I added a Pioneer head unit with Infinity components in the front doors & Infinity plates in the rear doors. I had been planning more upgrades, but never got around to it. It sounded better than stock, but it was missing the bass. I have been looking for a good solution to my lack of bass, but I didn't want something that was gonna take up a lot of space. I finally found the perfect solution. I added an Alpine KTP-445U "Power Pack" to power the door speakers & the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD to fill in the bass. I never thought I would get the quality of sound I'm getting from such a small powered subwoofer. It fits under the backseat without taking up a lot of space & you wouldn't even know it's there except for the awesome sound it produces.
Pros:
All-in-one COMPACT solution for your lacking bass problem Plenty of bass in a small space Sounds larger than it actually is
Cons:
Only for the neighbors lol jk

Completely Impressed!

Written By Jprscottmb, Little Rock, AR on Sunday, March 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a '12 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited & was looking for something to beef up my factory system. I hooked it up in about 2 hours (mostly b/c of kids) and put it under the driver's seat. I am totally impressed!!! Lots of sound for such a small speaker! I would totally advise people to buy this speaker!!
Pros:
Major sound!! Small size!
Cons:
You have to hook it up! lol

Big sound little package

Written By Dluedke, Ogallala on Tuesday, March 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice compact unit with a lot more sound then I expected form such a small package. Buy no means is it a window vibrator but it dose provide a good full sound. I did have some problem getting it to work in the high input auto on position but in the low input remote on it works fine. It did take some time and tweaking to get it to sound seem less with the factory system in my truck but now that it is it sounds great. One thing that I like is that it does have a lot of adjustments so you can tweak it. One thing I didn't like is the remote volume control... I like to hide things and it is too big to tuck away and hide.
Pros:
Small compact full sound from low to medium volume
Cons:
Falls off at high volume. Large volume control

Sound Ordnance B 8 PTD Powered Subwoofer

Written By wudbuchr, West Tennessee on Sunday, February 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this and a Pioneer AVH P8400BH head unit in my 2012 Tacoma Access Pre-Runner. Installation was a breeze (placed it on the console between the back seats). It was really more than I expected! Pushing Polk speakers front and back, the AVH P8400BH has adequate Bsee but the B 8-PTD fills it out. This configuration provides much more audio than the truck needs. I have been very pleased with Crutchfield's supeerb service and their tech support. They helped the installation go flawlessly. I will be a repeat customer with this outstanding orgainzation.
Pros:
*self contained *small enough to fit under a seat *more than sufficient base for my needs *Easy to follow ste-up instructions
Cons:
*Still looking for one!
