Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the ZVOX Z-Base V420

by Marshall Chase

The low-profile ZVOX 420 raises your TV height by a few inches — but improves your TV sound by a mile. This feature-laden, pedestal-shaped speaker gives you flexible connection options, including analog and digital audio inputs, for both newer and older TVs and components.

Dialogue up, commercials down

If you can't hear the actors, it's nearly impossible to follow the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives voices new clarity and prominence. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats during commercial breaks. Thanks to the output leveling feature, the V420 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax.

ZVOX Z-Base V420

Big sound from a small console

This one-piece system houses five full-range speakers, a high-output woofer, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. Plus, the V420 is designed to serve as a convenient base for flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 50". Even older TVs sit perfectly atop this sturdy wooden cabinet that can support up to 110 lbs. Place the Z-Base directly underneath your TV and you won't have to worry about making extra room for it on your entertainment stand.

Built with convenience in mind

The Z-Base V420 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. The display on the V420 lights up from behind the front cloth grille then disappears when not in use. And the V420 learns the commands of your TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

    Features

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base 420 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 32"-50" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the Z-Base 420. The television should weigh 110 pounds or less. The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 27" width or 13" depth. You can also place the unit on a shelf directly below the TV, if desired.

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX Z-Base 420 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 45 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Five 2" Drivers: The ZVOX Z-Base 420 has five 2" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

5-1/4" Subwoofer: In addition to the five main speakers, the Z-Base 420 has a built-in down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound: The Z-Base 420 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

    • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
    • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet: The Z-Base 420 features a cabinet made of MDF (medium density fiberboard), the same material used in most high-end loudspeakers. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The Z-Base 420 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

    Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu-ray player that are not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The Z-Base 420 has independent bass and treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass and treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new Z-Base 420 can be programmed to respond to your current remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume up, volume down, mute, and power on the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The Z-Base 420 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

    Connections

One Cable Connection: The Z-Base 420 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX Z-Base 420 offers analog and digital audio inputs:

    • Digital Inputs: The Z-Base 420 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept 2-channel PCM only (not compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals).
    • Analog Inputs: The Z-Base 420 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input. The front panel input is handy for connecting an iPod or other portable audio device.

    Falls Short

Written By Spauthy, Grantville, PA on Tuesday, April 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to keep to one remote (DirecTV) for all functions. Crutchfield customer service said, on two occasions, this unit will enter standby but wake up when the audio signal appears from the TV. No way. You must use the ZVOX remote to wake up the unit before it will function with the other remote. Unit also uses IR (line-of-sight) technology (still in the stone age like Bose) instead of RF, so you need to always be pointing the remote directly at the unit. Surround sound is a marketing gimmick that would benefit from an "off" setting. SS setting did little to affect the ambience. Returned the unit; looking for something else.
    Pros:
    Sound improvement over TV speakers.
    Cons:
Standby mode only wakes to ZVOX remote. IR remote is old technology. Surround-sound is a marketing ploy.

    Met all goals

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box it took five minutes to set up following the easy instructions with helpful photos. Purchased to enhance quality of the dialogue and it does so perfectly. My wife and I were not looking for a surround sound home theater thing, yet I cannot believe the sound. Dialogue is crisp, explosions, sirens and what not are so clear and sharp that the dogs, who were used to the regular sound of the TV, go on full alert! Plus the display on the front is great.
    Pros:
Ease of set up and use. Performs exactly as advertised. Purchased here and the person I spoke with took their time, listened and provided good advice.
    Cons:
    None.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 3 years for the cost I thought the upgrade would be better on all levels from my MainStage speaker ....slight damage on arrival.
    Pros:
I like the fact that it fits underneath the TV, being all black it actually looks like part of my tv. Sound quality is very good..
    Cons:
Comparing this to my MainStage ... The remote is the biggest challenge which I still haven't figured out yet, to many buttons. The labeling that define the functions blend in with the dark color of remote Very hard to read. My biggest let down is when setting TV to automatically turn on the speaker does not engage, it must be turned on manually.

The sound quality is great! Clean tight bass with good definition. You can clearly hear the difference in tone of acoustic, electric and synthesizer bass. Treble and midrange are accurate. ZVOX puts the speakers in my HDTV to shame. This is the perfect solution to good sound in a small room. Now the audio matches the picture quality of my HDTV!
    Pros:
Easy placement and set-up. Clearly written instruction manual. ZVOX can produce substantial output in small rooms. Reasonably priced based on performance and build quality.

    Excellent

Written By RobertM, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, December 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent soundbar! Eliminated a lot of clutter around our HDTV, which was the intent - but the sound produced by the Zvox 420 is astonishing. It's pretty big, but tha'st not a downside for us. Very easy hookup to our newer Vizio TV, although I haven't managed to program our 'big' remote yet. We love the dialogue enhancer and never miss a word anymore. The Zvox allowed us to move our desktop stereo/CD unit into the bedroom, as our Panasonic Blu-ray plays CD's beautifully with the Zvox, with no additional cables. It's a beautiful thing.
    Pros:
Attractive, simple but effective remote & display, with excellent sound at all levels.
    Cons:
    None so far.

Written By Dan in Denver, Denver, CO on Friday, September 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While a nice improvement over the speakers in my 46" Panasonic plasma TV, I'm not sure about all the raves that Zvox gets from the press. I am happy with the sound for the regular shows I watch, but would be disappointed if I was using the Zvox for action movie sound. Fortunately I have a theater room with a full surround system for watching movies, so not an issue. movies,
    Pros:
Improvement in voice clarity and fullness of sound. Size; price.
    Cons:
Nothing special for real dynamic sound tracks or using to play music.

    Terrific sound quality

Written By jerryF, Dundee, OR on Friday, August 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The flat screen TV has wimpy sound but the ZVOX V420 turns it into a poor-man's home theater! The attractive box compliments the TV and looks as good as it sounds. Set up, of course, is extremely simple. It only took about 30 SECONDS to program my TiVo remote control to make the speaker system respond to my commands. Specifically, the TV and ZVOX turn on and off together, along with the volume level and mute. I truly believe the ZVOX V420 is worth every penny of it's very reasonable price.

Great sound, terrific quality, very attractive.

    Adequate

Written By Catman, Saint Petersburg, FL on Monday, May 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took some tinkering to make to connect to my new Samsung flat-screen. Buried deep in the Samsung was a switch to go from standard to amplified, that did the trick. After it was all done (I had to call Crutchfield for assistance), it worked. However, it doesn't sound as good as I had hoped. Also, I had expected it to keep the commercial volumes lower, but it only brings them down about 20% (still louder than the show). I only have a 32" LCD TV, so the footprint of this device is about 2" longer on each side (MOL), and as it sits on a glass rack underneath my wall-mounted TV, it's a little larger than I'd hoped. There is no annoying light on the device (yea!), and the sound is better, but it's not super. We're still tweaking it. I got it because my 57y/o ears aren't quite as sharp as they used to be, and I have had issues hearing the tiny squawky speakers that come with the TV. This is an improvement, but not as much as I had hoped. I will, however, keep it, and I highly recommend Crutchfield to others.
    Pros:
No annoying LED light when idle (or running). Blends in everywhere as it is slate-black. It will probably never wear-out. Setup, once I got past my single technical issue, was a breeze. Crutchfield tech support answered quickly, was very friendly, USA based (I hate off-shore support), and got the job done. Solid construction.
    Cons:
Sound not quiet up to the level I had hoped, but an improvement nevertheless, and did not require me to hook up to a stereo system. I'd recommend it, keeping in mind it's only this much and not $2,000. Not made in U.S.A.

    ZVOX Z-Base V420

Written By Anonymous, Dayton OH on Thursday, May 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compared to the TV speakers, this unit provides much more solid bass, and with the dialogue enhancement feature enabled makes it far easier to understand what is being said. The three "surrond sound" programs do make some difference, but in my opinion are more show than real added value - but this is an all in one unit so I didn't expect a dramatic difference. The volume level is more than adequate for my smaller living room, but keep in mind that it does have a typical audio taper so there is a rather big jump around level 14 (out of 30 max). With output leveling enabled there seems to be delay before the unit decreases the volume, so loud programs can still cause a bit of a rush. Both the dialogue enhancement and output leveling need to be turned off if you plan on using the 3.5mm input (ln3) for music. The unit does a decent job of amplifying music, but don't expect it to sound like a good stereo or home theater unit. It is a nice looking addition and other than the improved sound it's hardly noticable sitting under my TV. The unit I received had a small amount of damage to one front corner, which I was able to repair so that it is barely noticable. As usual Crutchfield was very good about making an adjustment to the price for the damage.
    Pros:
Reasonable price for the much improved sound; easy to operate; basic functions easily controlled by the cable remote; low key apperance.
    Cons:
Optical audio didn't work - Crutchfield team had the same problem with getting the connectors to align and recognize the signal. The fix was to use the fixed analog output of my TV into one of the analog inputs. An optical cable is included, analog cable is not; also, if you plug an MP3 player into the extrra jack (ln3) when it is unplugged the unit defaults to the digital input (dln1) which is the one that wouldn't work - you then need to use the Zvox remote to switch to analog input ln1.

    Just Buy One

Written By MikeG, Copley, OH on Tuesday, May 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a Samsung sound bar with which I was not even remotely satisfied. The difference is overwhelming. Rich sound quality throughout the range, no hollow or tinny sounds, the bass doesn't drown you in reverb unless you crank it up. If your hearing is damaged from age and/or abuse, the dialogue enhancement setting alone is worth the price of admission. It's not a home-theater system but it's a whole lot of audio quality for the money. The setup was simple and idiot proof, the interface with my cable box remote is seamless.

The output leveling mode doesn't limit volume of commercials as well as I had hoped but as the mute button solves that minor issue
    Pros:
Great sound Dialogue enhancement Easy setup
    Cons:
    Nothing

    Great Sound

Written By Steve, NJ on Wednesday, April 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Sound, works great for my application. Just looking a better sound from the TV in the family room. I didn't have a lot room to work with and didn't want the surround sound system and multiple speakers. Was better than I expected.
    Pros:
    East set up, great sound
    Cons:
Setting up to work with existing remotes was difficult but not deal breaker

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy set-up, remote works well and voice enhancer seems to help.
    Pros:
great sound from an unobtrusive product
    Cons:
I'll check further, but a line out for a sub-woofer would be great
