Woofer
K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting
of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer.
This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent
damping characteristics.
Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet
rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and
longevity.
Zamak Basket: The woofer features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak
is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.
Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-9/16"
diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.
Midrange
K2 Cone: The midrange cone is a sandwich composite consisting
of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer.
This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent
damping characteristics.
Zamak Basket: The midrange features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak
is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.
Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped aluminum phase plug in the
center of the midrange ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by
preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone
from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.
Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter
low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.
Neodymium Magnets: The midrange drivers use Neodymium magnets,
which have the same magnetic flux power as a ceramic magnet 10 times their size,
reducing the size and weight of the speaker.
Size: The midrange drivers are not a standard size, approximately
3" diameter. It can be top or bottom mounted and has these dimensions:
- Depth (top mount): 1.4"
- Mounting height: 0.2"
- Flange height: 0.2"
- Depth (bottom mount): 1.6"
- Tweeter protrusion: 0" (zero)
- Cutout diameter: 2.87"
- Frame diameter: 3.47"
Tweeter
Inverted Dome Tweeter: The TN53K tweeter is an Aramid fiber
inverted
dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to
provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining
the tweeter's compact dimensions. The dispersion is controlled by the twin
radius wave guides to improve staging and directivity.
Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted.
Focal recommends flush mounting and the flush mount cup is built onto the tweeter
housing. The included angled cup allows surface mounting at approximately 30°.
Tweeter/Midrange Mounting: Two surface mounting pods are included with
the 165 KRX3 that hold a midrange and tweeter. The pods' dimensions are 6.856"
x 4.114" x 3.123" (height above mounting surface).
Crossover
Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene
capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic
sound quality. There are five switches on the crossovers to adjust crossover
points and output levels, offering a total of 162 different settings.
Bi-amp: The new crossovers included with the 165 KRX3 have
bi-amp inputs, one input for the midrange/tweeter combination and one for the
woofer. When using only two amplifier channels the crossover inputs are shorted
together. Focal recommends using four amplifier channels to bi-amp the speakers
for the improved dynamic range and to present an easier load for the amp(s) to
drive.
Tweeter Adjustment: You can adjust the overall output level
of the tweeter on the crossover; set to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB. Another switch
allows you to emphasize the extreme (high) treble frequencies.
Midrange Level: The midrange output is also adjustable; set
to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB. When the mids are installed low in the door, some of
the output is absorbed by the upholstery and they can benefit from a higher
output setting.
Crossover Points: There are three crossover frequency
options for both the woofer (low-pass) and midrange (high-pass) outputs; the
exact crossover points are not given. The upper frequency limit of the midrange
output is not adjustable.
Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they
will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.
