Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

    Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

    Disc Type Disc Description
    Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3), BD-RE (ver.2.1)
    DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
    CD CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

    • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
    • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
    • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
    • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S790 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, Sony may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray player contained firmware version M13.R0325 (as of 6/19/2012). There was an immediate firmware upgrade (M13.R0369) available. Visit the Sony eSupport Site for the latest firmware update information.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MPEG Playback: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of MPEG (1-2-4) video files recorded on BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

Still-Image Playback: This unit will play JPEG/GIF/PNG/MPO still picture files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The BDP-S790 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

    Video Features

16-Bit Video Processing w/ SBM (Super Bit Mapping): The Sony BDP-S790 features 16-bit video processing with Super Bit Map for premium, stellar picture quality.

Video Outputs: The Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray disc player features two high-definition HDMI outputs and one standard-definition composite video output.

    • Dual HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S790's dual HDMI outputs simplify your A/V connections by carrying high definition video and digital audio in one cable to up to two televisions. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.
    • Composite Video: The composite video output will only output 480i, no matter the source.

Note: This player does not offer a component or S-video output.

Precision Cinema HD Upscaling (up to 4K): Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S790 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 4K, 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S790 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready w/ 2D-3D Conversion: The Sony BDP-S790 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Sony BDP-S790 can also convert 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses. You can make adjustments to the 3D effect and 3D depth.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S790 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S790 features the following screen settings:

    • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
    • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can select from the following:
      • Original: select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV
      • Fixed Aspect Ratio: changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio
    • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The BDP-S790 offers the following video adjustments:

    • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Standard, Brighter, Theater) for different lighting environment.
    • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
    • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
    • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - Auto & Video.

    • Auto: The player automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method.
    • Video: The conversion method suited for video-based material will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

    Audio Features

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S790 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

    • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
    • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.

Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, & DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

DTS Neo:6: This surround sound setting outputs simulated multichannel sound from 2 channel sources via the player's HDMI output.

Audio Settings: The BDP-S790 allows you to adjust the following audio settings:

    • AV SYNC: synchronize the picture and sound by delaying the audio output in relation to the picture output; 0 to 120 milliseconds
    • Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto, On, Off.

    Love it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is new technology for us. Our 'old' players are just that: old! Thankfully, our TV isn't, but lacks 3D. We did read a lot of reviews, seeing the pros and the cons. In the end, we opted to take this unit over the Sony S590. That should tell you we focused on a Sony lineup. This was due, in part to so many lousy reviews of LG, Samsung (many were very pro, but the reviewed product wasn't available), and Toshiba. We don't care for Panasonic equipment,as a rule. Hook-up was too simple. We see a hard-wired connection to our home network, even though we have wi-fi. Connection to the network was completed without error. The unit did edible a software/firmware upgrade immediately. I had read any reviews that indicate problems and we should not do the upgrade. All is okay! No problems. Picture clarity is superb! Much better than our old unit. Everything is so clear, so vivid. Well, we are pleased. We haven't 'surfed' the Internet using the Sony built-in browser yet. That comes next. We have used the unit at Netflix and amazon instant video with 0 problems. Oh, salty, we read the manual...all of it before we used it!
    Pros:
Lots of features for the price. I think too many for the "technology state" we are in. But, we're glad it's there. Biggest pro: we brought it from Crutchfield! Best service, and customer support anywhere.
    Cons:
None,so far. We installed the Sony app TV Sideways for our Apple handheld products. We've experienced some problem with it, but are still getting used to it.

    Sony BDP-S790

I purchased this because of the dual HDMI out. We have an older receiver that does not support 3D. This player works well. Load times are short. The internet streaming is fast and responsive. Set-up and use is easy. The player has a nice picture and 3D works well. I have no complaints.
    Pros:
    Good picture, short load times
    Cons:

Great player at a great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We wanted to get a blu-ray player that loaded quicker - our original player could take 5-10 minutes to load a blu-ray disc and sometimes would just freeze up. This player load MUCH faster, practically instantaneous. It also has the ability to stream content from a wide variety of providers - that is the other reason we purchased this one. The quality of the audio and video is excellent. For the price I believe this is the best blu-ray player on the market. The iPhone app for controlling this player works quite well. The player is also much smaller than our previous player.
    Pros:
Fast loading time, streaming from many services, easy to use, iPhone App works fantastic!
    Cons:
Interface for spelling words in searches is clunky. It would have been nice to have some kind of keyboard, especially on the iPhone app where such a thing would be easy to do.

    Sony BDP-S790

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit, which performs as advertised. Easy to set up and use. I do wish the styling was a little more conventional. The illuminated touch buttons are a nice feature, but you really end up using the remote 99% of the time. I bought this unit to take advantage of the 2 HDMI outputs, very handy.
    Pros:
Two HDMI outputs, ease of use
    Cons:
Display on the unit is too dim to easily see in daylight. The on-screen display when using Blue Ray is a little limited.

    Pros:
Great picture, sound is amazing and Netflix Video works great too.

    Blue Ray Payer

Written By Jonnie, North Carolina on Friday, February 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Based on previous Sony Players I purchased the S790. I am happy with this one also.
    Pros:
Excellent picture and sound with 2D and 3D Blu-ray disks with easy basic setup. Powers on Samsung TV when turned on.
    Cons:
Fairly long load time, but not a significant problem. Had some problems hooking the unit up to a receiver-amp. I found that the description of AV Seperation Output Mode in the manual did not agree with my experience when changing the parameter to get the unit to output sound to the receiver-amp.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I abhore the bevelled front panel look that is becoming more common these days. Equipment that is styled that way does not integrate well with my existing system. It has a low WAF at this house - more on that later. At least the front of this player is only partially bevelled, so it blends reasonably well. Having a dual HDMI output, and BOTH coaxial and optical digital outputs saves having to buy additional add on adapting equipment later on, and the annoying wall wart power cubes that go with them. This player will upconvert 1080i/p to the new 4K UHD. I'm curious what this player would look like on the new LG 84LM9600 84" UHD-TV. This player has a great price given the output flexibility. The 790 is smooth operating, has a great picture and sound, and has a few operating novelties that are fun to play with. What's not to like? Read my two cons I listed below.
    Pros:
Really slick operating, the pIcture and sound are top notch, the dual processors really speed up load time, versatile outputs, and it looks great on the shelf with my other equipment. I give it a full ten on my WAF scale - Wife Acceptance Factor.
    Cons:
No component output for some older displays - which is all too common these days. Websites given by the player for signing up for internet functions are apparantly obsolete. I don't play that game. I will notify Crutchfield to put the heat on Sony to correct this info glitch. They should have more clout with Sony than little-old-me.

    Another Sony in the family

Written By Don, Thousand Oaks, CA on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my 6-year-old DVD player (not a Sony) kicked the bucket, the search for a Blue Ray player was on. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and this unit quickly rose to the top of the list. The deal was sealed when I visited my local high-end home theater store, where I have purchased my HT 6 years ago, and found that this Sony was on their shelf in one of their listening rooms (albeit the lowest-priced player they sell).

    Solid Purchase

Written By MRp, MN on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid Value. Impressive WIFI and Internet Streaming channels and options - much better value than my Apple TV3. Dual HDMI Output is excellent. Great option to decode the audio on the Sony and Input via PCM right to my older Denon Receiver for great sound. Splitting the Audio/Video across the dual HDMI Out will also allow me to get a 3D TV WITHOUT having to upgrade to a 3D capable receiver in the very near future.
    Pros:
Dual HDMI Out allows you to split Audio and Video across the Outputs
    Cons:
Coming from Denon DVD Players, it's nothing heavy duty when it comes to durability. But not bad for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have nothing bad to say about this Bluray player. I looked at & tried various cheaper players (under $100) and they cannot come close to the quality of picture & speed at which disks read & load the menus. I don't use the Internet streaming capabilities of this unit because I use a Roku instead. I'm sure it would perform equally well, but the Roku has more channel options to choose from at the present time. My opinion... if you're considering this player, stop considering & own it. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed in any way.
    Pros:
    Speed, picture quality, easy setup.
    Cons:
None to report at this time (owned for 3 weeks & numerous Bluray & DVD movies.

    Sony BDP-S790

Written By PaulC, Lenoir City, TN on Thursday, December 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From the instruction manual to its performance, I have been very well pleased with this unit. There was no need to install updated firmware and on-screen instructions were easy to follow. I was very impressed with its performance as a 3-D Blu-Ray DVD player from the moment I turned it on and inserted a 3-D disc. Nice soft-touch buttons for mannually operating the unit as well. In the future, I hope to purchase a larger 3-D TV; I will consider the Sony brand first, based on my satisfaction with its top-of-the-line 3-D player.
    Pros:
    Great instructions, great performance.
    Cons:
    Can't think of any!

Video fine - audio lacks basic features

Written By dob, St. Louis, MO on Thursday, December 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The S790 works fine for video, but believe it or not, Sony has neglected to provide track numbering for SACD and Bluray audio discs on the player's display. You have to turn your TV monitor on to identify the track. It's ironic that track numbers are displayed for standard audio CDs but not for two disc types developed by Sony: SACD and Bluray. For SACD all that displays is the track elapsed time (the space following the T is blank); for Bluray audio all you see is total elapsed time for the whole disc, which can be quite long. Completely useless. Would have given it a 4-5 star except for such corporate short-sightedness. Come on, Sony. You can do better than that if you want to call it a universal player.

    the Sony BDP-790 wow

    Written By daveomega67, holmdel,nj on Sunday, December 16, 2012

i brought the Sony BDP-S790 for it's massive improvement when it comes to picture and sound they were right. unlike oppo BDP-105 which can only up convert films to 4K if you are using a 4k tv. sony BDP-S790 can enhance blu-ray to 4k resolution and send that better picture in 1080p so you wouldn't have to buy a new tv to see what 4k picture quality looks like and full onboard 7.1 decoding. wifi has improved range and no matter your tv you will great quality it has bit by bit image enhancing for the upscaling dvds and so it can make blu-rays look 4 times better than it would than on any other unit.
    Pros:
4k upscaling so your 1080p films would like better on your tv than it would with a normal 1080p player. the full onboard audio decoding so tv wouldn't have to guess how to playback the audio.
    Cons:
setup and trying to figure out what would be the best setting for best playback and it not having auto setup like the ps3 does which does everything for and sets unit to best settings for what you are using it with here i have to guess.
