What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the MTX Thunder Square TS5512-44

by Gabrielle Thorndyke

High-performance bass that doesn't cut corners

MTX Thunder Square subwoofers are intense and loud — and as rock-solid as the bass they deliver. Featuring a stamped steel basket, gloss black polypropylene dust cap and a raised MTX Audio gothic-style logo, these square subs move some serious air and look good doing it.

Thunder Square side

Outstanding power handling and wiring flexibility

Thunder Square surround

The TS5512-44 12" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS. Dual 4-ohm voice coils give you extra flexibility in wiring up your subwoofer system, and they work beautifully with both sealed and ported enclosures. They work in sealed enclosures to give you tight, punchy bass, while offering resounding boom in ported boxes. Special venting keeps this sub cool while it delivers superior low-frequency performance.

    Features

Square Polypropylene Cone: The Thunder Square 55 features a painted gloss-black metallic, stitched polypropylene square cone with a raised MTX Audio logo. Polypropylene is lightweight yet durable and offers efficient, dependable bass response. A square subwoofer provides16% to 20% more area than a conventional round subwoofer.

Rubber Surrounds: The Thunder Square series woofer features a rubber surround that is stitched directly to the cone for durability. The woofer's rubber surround uses FEA optimized roll geometry to maximize excursion without sacrificing cone surface area.

Voice Coil: The woofer's voice coil is wound with 428-degree High Temperature wire to ensure reliability even at loud volumes.

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils that offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Spider Plateau Venting Technology: The Thunder 55 woofer uses proprietary Spider Plateau Venting technology which helps push out air out of the voice coil and bring cool air in, adding to the reliability of the subwoofer and keeping it cool even in the hottest vehicles.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System: The woofer's Asymmetrical Linear Drive System combines a flat progressive spider with an extended pole piece to reproduce smooth, linear motion for incredibility crisp, clean sound.

Stamped Basket: The TS55 subwoofer has a black stamped basket design for structural strength, a stamped back panel with MTX's aggressive looking Gothic logo, and a large ABS plastic boot protecting the woofer's magnet.

Dual Terminals: The square woofer features two pair of nickel plated, spring-post terminals for attaching your speaker wire from your amplifier.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: MTX recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 1.25 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: MTX recommends a ported enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 2.00 cu/ft using a 2" wide x 14" tall slot port that is 16.75" long.

the best square subs to ever exist

Written By tomb, mechanicsville md on Sunday, November 07, 2010

words cant describe how outstanding these subs are,i have just finnished my third install with 2 squares each, and every time it gets better,my first install was in my suburban,i got 2 of them in a side ported box(the one sold here) first i faced them to the rear of the truck and they were loud, then i faced them tward the ceiling and it was twice as loud,i can set off car alarms and shake neiboring cars all day, they say 1200 watts rms max,i call bull,i have a RF t-2000 bd at 1 ohm on them(full 2000 watts) and they take it like a champ, ive never heard (or felt) a louder pair of 12s EVER,my next install was in my friends 96 impalla,i built a custom box(about 4 cubes) and vented it into the rear deck,i know that kills some of the sound, but they still rattle my skull, people ask me all the time if i have 2 15s,once again, extremely impressed by the performance,im working on my third install now in my brothers tahoe, going to try a t2500,i bet it blows down the house, you gotta get some of these bad boys, you will be hooked for life,i know i am,i put up a vid on youtube of my first install, its not the best quality but you get the idea, awsome bass for not too much coin
