Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-6300UB

by Ken Nail

Pioneer's DEH-6300UB CD receiver offers great sound quality, a sharp-looking display with customizable color options, and the ability to enjoy all your digital music. The receiver's simple, intuitive controls let you spend less time looking for music, and more time enjoying it. You'll take in text information with a quick glance at the 2-line LCD display, while the Pioneer's Rotary Commander control knob makes it easy to scroll through your menus, files, and system settings.

Optimized for your digital music library
You'll be in command of your iPod® when you plug into the high-speed front USB input. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's digital-to-analog converter, using its high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with improved fidelity. You can also listen to your MP3, WMA, and AAC files burned to disc, so put together some party mixes for those epic road trips. Got a portable satellite radio or gaming device? You can connect almost any audio source to the front auxiliary input.

You'll tweak the sound to your taste with the Easy EQ 5-band graphic equalizer and 6-level bass boost. Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever expands high-frequency data lost when you created your digital files, so all your stored music files will sparkle.

Enjoy streaming music?
This receiver can play songs from the Pandora music service through your iPhone®. Whenever you have Internet access, just plug your iPhone into the USB input, and you'll enjoy total control over Pandora, including displays of artist, album, and song information on the receiver's screen.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Multiple-Color Illumination: This unit is equipped with multiple-color illumination for its front-panel display and backlit buttons. You can select from 30 preset colors (White to Rose), cycle through all preset colors (Scan), or customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels). You can set the head unit's display illumination and button illumination to separate colors.

Level Meter: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB features a level meter display with 4 mode settings.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-6300UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-6300UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-6300UB are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

7-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB features a 7-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 7-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-6300UB's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Booster: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Dual 2.2-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB features two pair of 2.2-volt preamp outputs (Front & Rear/SW). The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output.

Crossovers: The DEH-6300UB employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

      • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • Low Pass: When the head unit's rear-channel preamp output is configured as a subwoofer preamp output, you can activate an 18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: When the rear-channel preamp output is used as a non-fading subwoofer preamp output, you can adjust the subwoofer output's phase (normal/reverse) and the subwoofer output's gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

      Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

      Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. AAC Decoding: This unit will playback MPEG-4 AAC files (encoded by iTunes) recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Note: The AAC (MPEG-4) file must originate from iTunes. The AAC file must also not contain DRM protection.

Name/Track Title List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. Track Title List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB type-A input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant. This unit can play MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV files stored on a USB Mass Storage device in FAT12/16/32 file system formats.  Up to 8 directories, 1500 folders, and 15000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit. • AAC (MPEG-4) Files: MPEG-4 AAC files encoded by iTunes (not containing DRM protection) are supported.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to 'ACC' or 'On'.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The Pioneer DEH-6300UB's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the head unit, via Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU50, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable which comes with your iPod/iPhone. The DEH-6300UB supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, iTunes tagging, Pandora Link, and charging of your compatible iPod/iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. • Link Search: In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre.
      • Random & Repeat: You can also select random and repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder.

iPod/iPhone Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, including - Track number, Folder number, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album title.

iTunes Tagging: The head unit's built-in AM/FM RDS tuner supports iTunes Tagging, so you can save a song's information (tag) from an FM RDS broadcasting station to your connected iPod/iPhone. iTunes Tagging gives you the ability to "tag" your favorite FM RDS radio station songs and store the information on your connected iPod/iPhone; without having to scramble for a piece of scrap paper in the car or remember what song it was. Then later you can connect your iPod/iPhone to your PC and preview or purchase the "tagged" music at the iTunes Music Store. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

      Pioneer 6300UB

Written By ClintS, Sioux City, IA on Monday, November 07, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product for a work truck of mine wanting something nice without breaking the bank, yet easy to use. I was gonna go with the cheaper model of Pioneer, but for a few extra $ I thought I would give the Pandoralink a try, not to mention having a couple more preset EQ configurations. The Pandoralink works great, although you can't use your iPhone while using it, I would think they could solve that? One thing I've always had a hard time with is that they only have 2.2 Pre-Amp voltage. IF you have subwoofers, 4 amps sounds much better with a Kenwood. Only a couple higher end units have this. Couldn't be that much harder to do? Although, I've found that with stock speakers they sound just fine. Another thing is the clock. You either have to have a clock, or your audio/tuner display. It does have a multiple line display, why can't there be both? The rocker button is a different story. Almost everyone complains about the rocker/volume button. It IS kind of a pain to get used to. I've had 2 Pioneers that are this way, it is tolerable, but room for improvement. One reviewer said that if you place your thumb on top and your forefinger on the right side of the button, it works better. It does in fact give better results. I have had it for a couple months now and have gotten somewhat used to it. Otherwise, it's a great unit with lots of nice features. Would recommend to someone who has a limited bank account, but yet still wants something sleek looking with good sound.
      Pros:
Colors Build quality Pandoralink Easy to use
      Cons:
Rocker button isn't easy, but can be gotten used to it. Can't have clock on audio/tuner screen like you can with other unit brands. Only 2.2 Volts of Pre-amp voltage. Pioneer should step it up to 4-5.

      Pioneer DEH-6300UB Awesome!

This radio is AWESOME. The RDS feature displays the station info, Song info, and the artist or group. The color of the display is totally customizable. The FM and CD sound is clear and crisp. The instructions and install kit were a breeze. The FM reception is better than the factory radio. If I ever get rid of my car, the factory radio is going back in and I'm keeping this one.! BE SURE TO CONNECT THE Blue POWER ANTENNA wire,or no AM on my 06 Tuscon. I found the "no AM" fix here in the reviews. Awesome radio!
      Pros:
The RDS feature displays the station info, Song info, and the artist. The color of the display is totally customizable. The FM and CD sound is clear and crisp. The instructions and install kit were a breeze. The FM reception is great, as always it's best with a Pioneer Supertuner!
      Cons:
AM reception was almost non existant... if you don't hook up the blue "power antenna wire". Now it works fine and I had to upgrade my review to 5 stars all the way! That wire is for an antenna booster that tunes the AM stations to the little factory "ducky" antenna on my 2006 Tuscon.

Good stereo, but could be better

Written By Anonymous, Cambridge, MA on Monday, November 07, 2011
Installed in a 1999 Volkswagen Passat
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was initially exciting about the customization color options, but was disappointed when I learned there wasn't any support for auto-dimming the display at night (when the headlights are on).

The interface is powerful, but only really usable if you read the manual a few times, and explore...which is hard to do while driving, making casual use of the iPhone or Pandora functionality of this stereo difficult.

I'm satisfied enough with it, especially for the price, but feel like with a little more work on usability, it could be a lot better.
      Pros:
      1. USB port supports playing music from thumb drives, iPod music library, and Pandora (using the iPhone app). 2. Will charge an iPhone even if I'm listening to the radio or a CD. 3. Colors are very customizable...I could almost exactly match the deep blue LCD/dash lighting and red buttons of my Passat.
      Cons:
      1. No auto-dimming support when headlights are turned on. It would be great if I could have two sets of color presents, day vs. night, and switch between them based on whether the headlights are on or not. 2. Steep learning curve, especially for iPhone browsing, or finding the fade/balance controls (which should be easy, not buried in an "Audio" menu).

      Excellent Stereo

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I highly recommend this stereo! I Went from a crappy factory stereo in my 2011 Toyota Tacoma to this wonderful piece of hardware. Plenty of crank without an amp. And not much distortion at high volumes. My original stereo you couldn't hear it at highway speeds with the windows down. Not anymore. This Pioneer cranks out the tunes at many levels. Next upgrade will be better speakers. Crutchfield is the way to buy. This was my first stereo DIY install & it was super easy with what Crutchfield supplies. Plus free tech support will have your back.

I've had this stereo for six months & believe I picked the right one. Still happy with my choice!
      Pros:
The USB port for playing music from a flash drive, Able to change the display colors, A port on the front to plug an mp3 or ipod, removable faceplate, Remote control, & Great sound quality.
      Cons:
      Operating manual needs a rewrite.

Great system, especially for the price. Only reason it didn't get 5* is because the "Main Control" a pushable dial can be a little difficult to push in the center to select, especially while driving. It's still new to me, though, so perhaps it will get easier as I get a better feel for it. There are still things I'm working on figuring out. (Why read instructions?) :-)

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a receiver that is so inexpensive, it is amazing. The sound quality on it sound so much better than my previous $400 dvd receiver (jensen brand). The color illumination really makes it unique and the ipod hook up is great (you just need the ipod usb cable to hook up and thats it.) For anyone who is looking to buy something not too inexpensive, its worth the money and will do as good or even better than some $200 - $400 receiver out there. I would definitely recommend Pioneer above all else. My car is a 2002 Toyota Celica GTS. I'm planning to upgrade the speakers and eventually put in subs. Hope this helps your purchasing decision because I can understand how difficult it could be to choose something for your car...

I give this bad boy a 4 out of 5 because of the 7way magic stick. It is a great budget head unit. The 5 band eq is great, iPod/iPhone maneuvering is easy but the volume/everything stick is just poor design.

This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and my first aftermarket stereo. I haven't had any issues with this product and really enjoy it. It is definitely an upgrade over the stock one. Installation was made extremely easy with the extras that Crutchfield provided. I am completely satisfied.

      Great Radio

Written By ClayP, New Mexico on Friday, August 26, 2011

Have had the radio in my 03 Tacoma for 1 week now, and as others have said i'm still learning the buttons and combinations thereof to get to certain functions. Kind of a pain as you have to navigate a lot of steps with a finiky (sp?) knob to get to something that should be simple (like Fade/Balance). I still have one issue to figure out...just yesterday I hooked up my iPod for the first time (4G Nano) and now I'm getting a "pop" sound coming from the right front speaker any time I press a button on the headunit, except for volume control...checked my wiring all is good. Strange it just started happening when I plugged iPod in and now does it even if iPod isnt connected. Will be giving Crutchfield Customer Service a call this evening about it. Two thumbs up overall, however you have to willing to spend time getting to know the unit!

I got the stereo for my daughter's 16th birthday. The installation instructions were good, and the hotline guys were very helpful. It took us ~1.5 hrs from start to finish. Would highly recommend using the shrink tubing to cover the soldered wires. My daughter loves the final outcome--the stereo sounds great and it makes driving the old family minivan "cool".

      Bad Reviewers Don't Read Instructions

Written By MattC, KY on Saturday, August 13, 2011

I bought this unit to replace a Sony that was stolen out of my vehicle. I must say I almost don't regret the other one being stolen as this one is SO much better! There's hundred's of color combos for the illuminations and lots of adjustments for tuning your sound preferences. You can set the unit so that you are search for what you want played directly from the iPod/iPhone or search from the unit. Someone said they couldn't use their phone while it was plugged in. NOT TRUE! You set the unit for iPod control and then you can do whatever you want. Sitting in the parking lot at work one night I was playing one of my first person shooters with the sound playing through the speakers of my Jeep! How cool is that? My only gripe is that when in iPod control you can't change any of the EQ settings, or atleast I haven't figured out how to yet. I see lots of gripes about the control knob. I don't use it. It is MUCH easier to do all the EQ changes from the remote. You press AUDIO and it goes back to the last thing you was adjusting, then press ESC and you're back to your music. I'm planning to buy a second one to put in my toy, older muscle car, in which I had planned to throw one of my old Pioneer units in but I like this one so much I think I'm going to buy another! Again everything is easy to use once you get used to it. Just gotta give it a chance before you go writing your reviews. I've had it in for a couple months now and just now writing mine!

      Tip on the Tricky Knob

Written By TomH, Acton MA on Tuesday, August 09, 2011
Installed in a 2000 Volkswagen Passat
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, the knob; it tips left and right, and up and down as part of the navigation. But when you want to push it directly in, it's tricky; right? TIP: Press the button with your thumb while you sort of cradle it with the second joint of your index finger. It ensures that the button doesn't move to the side or up and down. It's easy once you figure that out. (Index finger pointing left, if you're right handed.)

I had NO AM radio the first week until I called the Crutchfield support team and connected the "extra" wire which is marked "power antenna" to the harness. Easy enough but I did have to remove the radio (not easy enough!).

I'm very happy with the sound through my iPod, not so happy that the iPod isn't supported (an older model) so I'm running it through the AUX. But the sound is excellent.

The FM radio reception is ALMOST as good as my 2000 Passat Monsoon system.

The Key and LCD are VERY handy (Illumination option). It gives me a good match for the blue and red of the Passat. And you can control the intensity. I took me a while to figure that out.

My free advice with instruction manuals, read them over coffee or in the John, NOT when you're trying to do something. It's fun to read how things work, when you're not trying to accomplish something and you'll get the hang of the unit that way. It CAN be AGGRAVATING when you're sitting front of the unit intently trying to divine the meaning of the writer! :)

Thanks to the Crutchfield team for being very helpful!

I just wanted a new stereo system to replace the factory one in my 03 jeep wrangler. I could have spent more money for an expeensive stereo but for what I wanted and needed, this stereo definitely did not disapoint. Great buy for the money. I love the wide variety of colors for the LCD screen and keys. Plays my ipod very well. Great sound!! so glad I bought this.

Awesome stereo! I replaced the stock stereo in my '05 Dodge Ram with this, and I absolutely love it. It's just more of the great quality we've all come to expect from Pioneer. The controls are a little odd at first, but what new deck isn't? The aux and USB inputs are great, and were a deciding factor in my decision to purchase this stereo. Also, the light color customization is a pretty cool feature. Buy it. Now.

I have always liked Pioneer So I am a little biased. I like the unit very much great sound nice install and fair operating controls. However it is geared around the Ipod/apple product line too much. I know apple is very popular but there are a few of us that do not own apple products. So over all great product but if you don't own an apple mp3 player you only get to use about 80% of the units features.

Not a lot to say here. It is what it is. A decent car stereo at a reasonable price. The user interface (buttons) are rather strange and don't make a lot of sense but do function well once you get past the learning curve. The manual is thorough but seems to have been randomly put together with you having to search to find what button does what. Also, the font size in the manual makes this 40+ guy need his glasses to read it. If you are in to the color thing then this unit will please. If you can't find your favorite color combo in this unit then you won't find it anywhere. There are quite a few customization options available and the built in EQ is nice. I have been a Pioneer fan all my life which lead me to this purchase. I am happy with the deck for the money I spent. Plus Crutchfield had this thing to my house in 3 days. Good on ya Crutchfield.
