Sound Ordnance

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ B-8PT

by Dominic Devito

The Sound Ordnance B-8PT powered subwoofer turns the hard-to-fit spots in your vehicle into potent bass bastions, adding warmth and punch to your favorite music. You can fit this compact low-frequency factory under your car seat or in an out-of-the-way location in the cab of your truck. Preamp- and speaker-level inputs allow convenient connection to just about any system, plus you can tweak the phase control, bass boost, and low-pass crossover for maximum firepower in your vehicle. A wired remote lets you take command of your bass from the driver's seat.

The B-8PT's built-in amplifier sends 120 watts RMS to the 8" subwoofer, adding high-impact low notes that'll fortify your music. The Sound Ordnance logo means you'll get more than tremendous value and reliable performance — the B-8PT is reinforced with a 3-year warranty so you can add it to your system with confidence.

I recently added the Sound Ordnance B-8PT powered sub to the back of my car, a Nissan Versa, and I'm very happy with it. It's just the right amount of bass for me, and I immediately started hearing notes that I'd never heard in my car before. If I turn up the sub, it booms really well - it's not shy! But I like my bass tighter and more focused, so I have the gain set about midway to keep it under control. It's great! The remote control knob lets me turn it down when my sons are in the car, so they don't have to put up with the pounding bass.

Just what I was looking for

Written By T1no33, Tampa, Fl on Monday, June 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you're looking for earth shattering bass that people hear a block away go buy something else. If you're looking for a great little powered sub to enhance the sound quality in your vehicle and get that extra punch out of things this is EXACTLY the product you are looking for. I am a 42 year old man that enjoys, rock, metal, country, hip hop, jazz, etc, etc and I found this little sub to make it all sound that much better in my vehicle. I have also NEVER installed anything in any vehicle I've owned out of fear but this was truly easy. I had to call Crutchfiled Support once and they were AMAZING!
Pros:
- easy installation - good price - good bass for unit
Cons:
- didn't fully fit underneath my car seat

Good sound and fits into small spaces

Written By No hardware included to mount unit!, Illinois on Sunday, June 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a small powered subwoofer to install in a 370z Roadster. This one was just the right size but still not able to fit under a seat. I was very surprised to find that there was absolutely no hardware included to actually mount the unit. I'm assuming that they figure you will just press fit it under your seat.
Pros:
Nice tight base sound.
Cons:
No mounting hardware. This should be noted in the description.

New 8" sub

Written By SimonSays, Armed Forces, AE on Sunday, June 02, 2013

First, I have been impressed with Crutchfield's aftercare. I called for help and the technician was excellent. The product has been great. Very simple install, easy setup and a pleasure to listen to in the car. So far, I would recommend this product.
Pros:
Size, price and easy to install. It rounds out factory speakers pretty well.
Cons:
If you enjoy bone rattling low bass, this is not for you; however, if you have a daily driver with children, and a passion for music, then this is for you. Super low bass just is not there.

perfect addition

Written By Rick M., Sartell, MN on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired with the current system I installed myself thanks to Crutchfield's Master Sheets (Alpine CDE-HD138BT receiver Boston Acoustics SC 65 front 746 back) in my 2000 Silverado. It is the perfect compliment to an already quality sound system with hard, clean, steady bass. Placed in the back, under the seat, it is neatly hidden, but lets the listener know immeadiately that it means business.
Pros:
Small compact powerful priced right
Cons:
none

Mediocre

Written By Nooly, Iowa on Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit based on the positive reviews, and for the ease of installation of a powered subwoofer. This product sounds ok when there's no road noise, but once you get moving it's hard to hear without cranking it up. The problem then is you have a noticeable amount of distortion. The product fit underneath my passenger seat, which made installation fairly simple. Unfortunately, the end result is what I would consider less than satisfactory.

I purchased this unit so I wouldn't have to build a custom enclosure for my application. I almost wish now that I had gone a different direction.
Pros:
Easy installation
Cons:
Too much distortion when it's turned up enough to hear it over the road noise

Great Boom for the Buck

Written By TimK, Coatesville, PA on Monday, May 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this powered sub mainly because of price and size. It is connected to the factory JBL sound system in my 2004 Toyota Tundra Double Cab and really packs a punch. I installed it under the driver's seat and was able to fit it in w/o losing the rear-mounted heat ducts which seems to be pretty common w/ this location. The installation was a snap, but I couldn't have done it w/o the help of EdB in Tech Support. He sent me a wiring diagram and pics of my interior that allowed me to tap into my factory-installed amp behind the back seat, instead of the head unit behind the dash. That alone saved me TONS of time and helped me get it done much quicker than I had expected. I've yet to "tune" the sub correctly, but I'm definitely happy w/ the results I'm already experiencing!
Pros:
Price, size, bang for the buck
Cons:
None that I've experienced

Seriously Confused About the Positive Reviews

Written By Christopher, United States on Thursday, May 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, wait, no, this is SOOO NOT OK... Do yourself a favor and Look Elsewhere for something different - This S.O. Sub is just that nothing but - SUB-STANDARD

Scenario: - Sony BT4000P Aftermarket Head Unit w/ Factory Speakers (not the Rockford System) in a 2006 xTerra - Head Unit has option for "Rear Base Enhancement" which essentailly converts your rear speakers through sound processing into pseudo-subs - obviously on a basic oem factory speaker system this doesn't do much and you tend to bottom out your rears - if not blow them - though it does give a nice thump at low volumes - Head Unit also has full control over Dedicated SUB-PreAmp Out - including gain control, phase control & cross-over points

So, you're wondering: "Why is he writing about the head unit?"

The RBE option with factory speakers (no actual sub) puts out more base then this sub does when it is totally maxed out and everywhere in-between - except at very low listening (volume) levels.

I bought this to replace a VERY old Kenwood 8" Self Powered (30w RMS - 60w Max) Sub Tube which I recently installed in my system which had 20x the bass but sadly due to its age the surround disintegrated from dry-rot but even with the Completely Blown Sub it has more punch then this...

Pros:
Not sure there are any... Nice Form Factor?
Cons:
Might as well not exist - ZERO - Added bass except at max settings at very low volumes...

Best compact sub out there

Written By Strick daddy, NC on Monday, May 06, 2013

Best sub for your money, I've researched a lot on subs. but i have a truck and want to keep my seats open, so my options are very limited. After months of research I found a sub that a lot of people were talking about and that had great reviews. I bought this subwoofer and installed it, turn the sound up(country, soft/hard rock) and it kicked! I have a crew cab so my truck is purdy big and it sounded as good as my friends 10 in JL. Its not over powering but its smooth and packs a good punch
Pros:
Has lots of power for a 8in sub
Cons:
none

small package, large sound

Written By Anonymous, DuBois, PA on Monday, May 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own an 02 Jeep Wrangler. I installed an alpine player and polk speakers from Crutchfield at x-mas time. After the install my factory "sub" stopped playing. After much debating I settled on this sub as my solution. I couldnt be happier with my choice. My music varies greatly from mine to my wifes and my young daughter. Some people mention it not being a "rattler" but it will shake my mirror without trouble. Plays rap, metal, punk, rock, hip hop, dance, and country all with out issue. mounted the volume control inside my center armrest console. As others have stated it is a bummer about not having mounting tabs, i have it under my rear seat and the fit is tight enough i dont think it'll go anywhere. Used the efx 10 gauge wiring kit, for a flawless install.
Pros:
small size, awesome sound
Cons:
no mounting tabs

Fits perfect in front of Passenger Footwell 2011 Expedition

Written By Vincentesq, CA on Monday, May 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2011 Ford Expedition. I upgraded all four speakers to Infinity and a Kenwood Nav. The sound was missing Bass because this model did not have a subwoofer. I had considered the Bazooka because I have had 2 of those in the past cars, and they were great. On the recommendation of Crutchfield, I purchased this, and WOW! It fits perfectly under the carpet of the passenger footwell. I have a corded control so I can control the bass volume, and at 9 o'clock setting (1/4 of total), the bass is perfect! Turning this to the 12 o clock position gives me heart pounding bass! Compared to the Bazooka, this is just as good. I listen to all types of music, including pops and hip hop. I would highly recommend this, and have just purchased another one for my Lexus Ls 430.
Pros:
Compact and fits almost everywhere! Easy installation!
Cons:
None that I can think of.
