Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9885

by Robert Ferency-Viars
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

The Alpine CDA-9885 CD receiver's informative display and fast song-search capability make it a terrific stereo for iPod® users. The BioLite™ display stays legible in just about any light, while the two lines of text offer plenty of space for your song and system information. You'll spend less time looking at the display, and more time with your eyes on the road.

Alpine includes an iPod adapter with the CDA-9885 that provides fast, direct control of your iPod from the stereo and the best possible sound quality from your music. You'll love Alpine's unique "percentage search" feature when searching for songs on your iPod. It uses the radio preset buttons to quickly jump through sections of your playlist, getting you to the song you want faster.

If you're building a system, three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs send a strong, clean signal to your external amplifiers. A high-pass filter eliminates the low bass from your speakers, so they can focus on the mids and highs. Add in the Bass Engine® 2-band equalizer, and your car's interior will become a wonderful listening room.

For more listening options, you can select from an Alpine satellite radio, HD Radio™ tuner, CD changer, or an optional auxiliary input. The user-friendly wireless remote lets you make adjustments while you concentrate on the road.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver and its iPod adapter.

      Features
      External Device Controls

      Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

BioLite Display: The crisp, clear, white on black BioLite display uses biochemical luminescence technology that provides outstanding visibility even in daylight. It is 40% brighter than normal displays, with higher resolution and better contrast. In addition, it has a much wider viewing angle than conventional displays.

Background Animation Displays: You can select from 4 different animated background displays: falling "Vs", glimmering water surface, gears, or pulsating shapes (hearts, diamonds, musical notes, circles, and stars). The animation displays can be turned off for a plain black background.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the play button.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

      • Bass Control:
        • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
        • Bass Band Width (Q): Q1 (narrow), Q2, Q3, or Q4 (wide)
        • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
      • Treble Control:
        • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
        • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
      • Defeat On/Off: reset the unit to its factory default bass and treble settings by turning the Defeat function on

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Blackout: To reduce power consumption you can turn off the display and button back lighting. When the Blackout Mode is turned on the display will illuminate for five seconds each time you press a button.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9885 has a dedicated subwoofer output with a variable level of 0 to +15.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

Angle Mounting: Alpine recommends mounting the CDA-9885 no more that 35° above horizontal.

Wireless Remote: The CDA-9885 is controlled with the supplied RUE-4202 wireless remote control (replacement item number 500RUE4202) or the optional RUE-4190 (item number 500RUE4910). The unit has a remote control sensor on the upper right corner of the faceplate.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The CDA-9885 has a steering remote control input on the back panel. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your factory steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagens and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult "What Fits My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Opening Message: When engaged, this feature will display a special message each time you turn on the radio on certain dates; Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday (after you program your birth date), etc.

      External Device Controls

USB Adapter Ready: With the optional KCA-620M USB adapter (item number 500KCA620M), you can connect and control MP3 players that have USB connections. In addition, if you have MP3s stored on a USB thumb drive, you can select and play those files from the head unit.

iPod Full Speed: The CDA-9885 has an iPod Direct Connection mounted on a 4" pigtail on the rear panel. When used with the KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Connection cable (500KCE422i, included in the box), your receiver can interface with most Apple iPods with a dock connector. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, or Composer. You can view artist, album, song, and track number on the head unit's display. The unit can be used with the following iPod versions:

      • Preset 1: 0% to 16% (of the song library)

HD Radio Ready: The CDA-9885 can receive HD Radio signals, including multicast broadcasts, when the TUA-T550HD HD Radio Tuner Module (500TUAT550) is connected via the Ai-NET connector. The digital seek function allows you to search for only HD Radio stations if you prefer.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

      • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner (220CNP20UC) and the Alpine CNP-ALP1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMALP1).

Compatible tuners include the Sportster, Starmate, Stratus, and Stiletto. You can control the satellite receiver from your head unit and use the Quick Search feature to browse all artists and songs currently playing on all channels. The SIRIUS text information also appears on the head unit display.
      • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input. (If the head unit doesn't include an auxiliary input, you will need the Alpine KCA-121B Auxiliary Input Adapter.)

Package # 700KCE460B.

Note: The Pass-Through port of the KCE-400BT allows you to connect the Bluetooth adapter as well as an iPod to the CDA-9885. The KWE-460 interconnection cable is still required along with a KCE-433iV Full Speed iPod connection cable (500KCE433I, sold separately). In this case the KCE-422i cable will not be needed.

External Processor: You can enjoy DTS, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound with the addition of an Alpine PXA-H701 multi-channel processor and RUX-C701 controller.

Ai-NET Compatible: An optional Ai-NET-compatible 6- or 12-disc CD changer (including MP3 and DVD Changers) may be connected to, and controlled by, the CDA-9885. LOUSY!!!

Written By kevin, PA on Monday, January 18, 2010

I don't normally write reviews but this is an exception. I've owned Alpine stereos for years and always been very satisfied with them. I have been away from the car stereo world for a few years and thought that the performance would only get better. WRONG!! what happened? Sure you can connect ipods and numerous other nonsense to this thing but the sound quality is dreadful! It really is and i ran this thing through old school rockford fosgate amps when they were made right here in the usa and quality was second to none! I ve even tried using the deck amplifier thinking maybe the amps have seen better days. Nope, it gets loud and clear but the sound is very overenhanced and unnatural sounding. Yuck! Furthermore the FM tuner is terrible. I live in the Philly suburbs and I think the factory AM tuner was clearer. Yes, some of us still use the radio. Also where did the trade mark Alpine green buttons go? These blue and red buttons are hideous and obscenely bright! The display is readable in almost any light but not very nice to look at. On a positive note navigating the menus is simple enough and well thought out. I find it very easy to operate. The sound is just horrid and unacceptable though! I'm taking this thing out and ressurecting my trusty old 7949!! The sound quality is that bad, I' d rather do without all the modern conveniences. They just don't make Them like they used to. I want my green buttons back!!!

      Um... why so bad?

Written By krazykyle09, Herndon, VA on Monday, January 11, 2010

Like the other worst review here, this unit produces a very cold and hollow sound. I have had to up the treble to the +7 marker and my sub to the +10 marker with barely an improvement in sound. Although this product may have a few years under it's belt, my original stereo (1997 BMW) is FARRRR better than this piece of crap. Anyways, I purchased it to replace my 6 year old Sony Xplod CDX-M800. The is a motorized flip model but unfortunately this past year the inside control panel has stopped working. Even more unfortunate, the Sony unit STILL blows the new Alpine unit out of the way. Sound was still perfect from it and also the given functionality of manipulating the high and low pass filters, built in EQ, etc etc. was a major upgrade to my original unit. However, the Alpine not only fails in every category in comparison to the twice as old Sony unit, but it also fails in the basics of stereo functionality. Navigation is completely retarded, the ability to modify any form of sound quality is appalling, and the buttons/display is obscenely bright and unreadable. Poor radio reception, mediocre CD playback, NO auxiliary function... pathetic. The day before I installed this unit, I was driving home a guy that owns a BMW M3. He commented on my systems complimenting its unbelievable sound quality and clarity considering I have 12 year old speakers (and to my knowledge have been THOROUGHLY used). It was also the last day I heard beautiful music of all genres played in my car. RIP.

      Great HUD

Written By zx10rrider, Western USA on Wednesday, June 24, 2009

I purchased this unit two years ago, and it still operates like new. Looking at the price and features of "improved models" available for sale today makes me dread the day I have to replace the CDA-9885. The face plate is very durable, I seldom use the protective case supplied by Alpine. Almost every aspect of the unit is well designed. I have an Ipod and Sirius unit connected to the back of this unit, both sound great, and are a cinch to operate through this unit.

      Pros:
      Great sound from any source.
Easy navigation utilizing Ipod, Sirius, playing CD's etc.
      Large bright, clean, clear display.
      Simple, well placed controls.
      Lots of connectivity options.
      Easy to use owner's manual.
Full Sirius Radio control from the receiver.
OEM steering wheel control option (with third party connect).

      Cons:
Blue color illumination option to bright at night (red option is great).
6 RCA jacks on back are to close together.
Volume knob separates easily from face plate.

One thing I dislike about Alpine is that to add a satellite receiver to this unit one must buy their adapter and hard wire it to the vehicles power source and ground the adapter. Manufactures such as Kenwood requires only a simple cable connection between their receiver and Satellite radio adapter, no additional power source is required.

I am very pleased with this unit and highly recommend buying it.

      Alpine CDA-9885

Written By Krahe, Shreveport, LA on Monday, June 08, 2009

Either the previous poster got a defective unit or just isn't putting the face back on right. I'll admit I had some trouble getting back on when I first got mine...it takes a few tries to get the feel. This is phenomenal head unit! I've had mine for almost two years and it has performed beautifully. My favorite features are the easy to read display, WMA/MP3/AAC compatibility, and file search features. My only complaints are the limited background effect options (only 4) and not being able to turn the back lights off in tuner mode. Minor stuff really. If your looking for an awesome receiver with great looks, THIS is it!!!

      FACE FALLS OFF

Written By Gary, Texas on Sunday, December 14, 2008
      Installed in a 2001 Ford F-150
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The detachable face lasts about 6 to 8 months before it turns into a total
      pain the the neck !
If you use the feature you will be dissapointed, the set up to reattach it is
very cheezy small plastic bump fits into a small plastic gear to hinge.

The sound is VERY GOOD but the face will frustrate you without a doubt.
Sometimes it just falls off as you close it to play your CD.
You will have to pull over and find it and reattaching it while you drive is
      impossible without crashing......LOL
I suggest finding a unit that does not have to drop the face everytime to
      load a cd.

      Alpine CDA-9885

Written By Stacie, Washington State on Friday, July 11, 2008
Installed in a 1997 Honda Civic
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Alpine CDA-9885 in two of my vehicles and I love it! I originally had it installed in my Santa Fe August of last year and loved it so much I bought a second one to put in my Jeep Wrangler. It's very easy to use and has tons of great features. It is very easy to use your ipod while driving because you can control it from the deck itself. The only downside is that the remote isn't as useful as I would have hoped. The Blue Tooth phone is great, especially here in Washington where it is now illegal to use your cell phone while driving if it's not hands free. I highly recommend this deck!

I purchased the alpine cda 9885 to replace the shaker 500 that came with my 2007 mustang. I am very please with the unit, it is far beyond what I expected from an after market stereo. The technical support people are very pleasant, helpful, knowledgable. I will definitely be purchasing a new set of speakers from Crutchfield and I will have a very nice set up.

      Great Unit!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      This is a great head
      unit. The ipod
      integration works
      great. The ipod
      turns on and off
      when the radio or
      car are turned on or
      off. With the way
      the Alpine is fully
      integrated, you can
      put the ipod in the
      glove box or console
      and only take it out
      when you update
      songs on it. I also
      love the subwoofer
      control. This unit
      has three sets of
      RCA outputs which
      allows you to
      control the
      subwoofer volume
      from the head unit.
      When you scroll
      through the sound
      settings, the
      subwoofer adjustment
      is the first one
      which is great
      because it is the
      setting I change the
      most. This unit
      also has a lot of
      sound settings that
      eliminate the need
      for an external
      crossover. You can
      set the frequency
      cut off to reduce
      the bass that goes
      to your speakers and
      it also has a
      feature which allows
      you to increase the
      sound in a certain
      frequency range
      based on your
      preference. I am
      very pleased with
      this unit.

      Terrific product

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like the title says, this receiver is terrific. I've had this for a few months now
and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Initially, I was a bit leery about
whether or not it would fit into my car (Scion TC 05). Crutchfield supplied me
with the harness and kit, free of charge, and it fit like a glove! No problems
      installing at all.

The iPod interface takes a bit to get used to, but once you've got the feel for it,
it makes life a whole lot easier. Plug in your iPod with the free cable, and you're
set! No need at all for CDs.

I'd definitely recommend this product. You can't get a better deal!

      Great Unit

Written By Justin, Buford, Georgia on Thursday, June 05, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      This head unit is
      superior for its
      price range without
      a doubt. Purchased
      to improve the sound
      in my 03 Dakota Quad
      Cab, it works
      excellent with my
      infinity reference
      speakers! It nails
      all mid's and high's
      like no other! It
      supports the bass
      well too considering
      they are infinity
      speakers and only
      6'1/2s... But the
      limitations are
      solely within the
      speakers; the unit
      can handle far more!
      I chose this after
      comparing to the
      Kenwood Excelon
      series in both stats
      and in person by
      sound quality, both
      of which this alpine
      unit won easily!
      Overall an
      outstanding unit to
      buy, and a great
      company to deal with
      due to their strong
      support!

      Excellent iPod Integration

Written By Bruce, Branford, CT on Monday, June 02, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      I looked at Pioneer
      and JVC and I
      believe Alpine has
      done the best job of
      integrating the iPod
      controls. Once
      installed and I
      started to use the
      CDA-9885 it was
      confirmed I was
      right. The iPod
      controls are both
      intuitive and
      respond very quickly
      so there is not a
      long time gap
      between say hitting
      the forward button
      and having the next
      song start. I was
      also able to pretty
      much figure out all
      the controls without
      looking at the
      manual while the
      Pioneer I could not
      figure out even with
      the manual. I am
      also liking the
      separate Source/Band
      buttons. On my old
      JVC, there was a
      combined button so
      you had to row
      through not only all
      the actual sources
      such as tuner, ipod,
      aux, cd but you also
      had to pass through
      all the radio bands
      so you also had to
      row through AM then
      FM before going full
      circle through all
      the choices. Doesn't
      sound like much but
      it was a pain. The
      Alpine makes it much
      quicker to get
      through the source
      selections. The
      sound quality is of
      course, excellent
      too. I mated my
      CDA-9885 with a four

      channel Alpine amp
      and 4 Infinity two
      way 6x8 door
      speakers and if this
      set up is lacking
      anything, it might
      be it could use more
      bass, which I will
      probably take care
      of with a small sub
      when I get the money
      to add one on.

      extremely clear sound

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I highly recommend this receiver. I have a Kenwood power amp and using the Alpine's preamp delivers much cleaner mids and highs than the Kenwood Exelon which it replaced. The bass is not as deep as the Exelon, but the channel separation is much better. I am currently running polk 6x9s and an Alpine component system in the front and a separate amp and bazooka for the sub and the sound is awesome. Of course the Alpine is much more user friendly than the Exelon. I have a Honda Civic in which the deck slightly slants up so that without the biolight I cannot see the display. My previous alpine deck didn't have biolight. My only suggestion concerning Alpine is that Alpine or Crutchfield should make it clear to customers with Honda Civics or other cars which have the deck slanting to not get any Alpine except one with biolight. After calling customer service at Alpine they said my car should only use the biolight deck. Luckily, I got this deck on sale or the extra hundred dollars for biolight may have forced me to stay with the Exelon.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      Positives:

      Alpine build quality,
Multiple options (Ipod, bluetooth, HD radio, Sat radio, CD).

      Negatives:

      Sound shaping,
      Overall sound quality,
      Lighting options (or lack of).

      Overall:

Before I bought this receiver, I had plenty of experience with one that I purchased for my wife's car. To her, and for her tastes, the CDA-9885 performs well- especially for Ipod functions that she primarily uses it for. In my truck I had a 1999 model Alpine CDA-7845 which basically only played CDs. I was so impressed with the sound quality of my old deck that I definitely wanted to go with Alpine again as it had performed flawlessly for over 8 years.

I assumed that the 9885 would sound similar, perhaps even better with more power and more sound shaping options (Bass Engine). However, after about 2 hours of tweaking and adjusting the Q levels, center frequency, and values of bass and treble, in addition to adjusting the High Pass, I could not get the stereo to sound as good as the CDA-7845. Like a lot of folks out there, it is important for me to have options with my stereo, but of utmost importance is sound quality.

To my (relatively) well trained ear, the 9885 sounds too harsh and out of control, especially in the midrange region. I could not find a crossover frequency that would mix the bass of the four main speakers with the subwoofer, which sounded muddy, especially with mid-bass heavy music. With the old receiver, the overall sound was warm, pure and right on; it just needed a few tweaks-- with far less sound shaping options than the 9885.

So, I called Crutchfield and they said they had heard this before and made a few recommendations. I shaped the sound a bit more and listened for another week and decided that I didn't like the sound. It was fatiguing and unnatural. So, I am sending this unit back and am trying out the 9886, which I've read has a bit warmer sound than the 9885. We'll see...

Overall, I give the 9885 4 stars because it is a good receiver-- but if you are a serious audio buff, you might want to look elsewhere. I'll write a review on the 9886 as soon as I get it and give an honest comparison of the two.

      My equipment:
      2000 Dodge Dakota Ext. Cab;
      Alpine CDA-9885
      6.5" Boston Acoustic Coaxial Speakers x 4;
JL Audio Stealthbox (W8) with a JL Mono sub amp

What can I say, Crutchfield has great customer service, lots of variety to choose from, and gives you all the information you're looking for. I've always gone to Best Buy to buy my stereo equipment. I thought I'd do it a little different this time, and I was very impressed. The unit I had previously was a Sony Xplod reciever, it was nice at the time. This reciever is a huge improvement over the old unit. Not only did Crutchfield display the item well on the website, but this reciever does exactly what I was looking for. I still have factory style speakers in the car. I work for a Jaguar dealership, and to be honest, just by adding this reciever, it sounds better than some of the Jaguar sound systems. Overall, I was very impressed. Also Crutchfield provided some of the wiring adapters and new antenna cable at no charge, plus the tool to remove the factory radio. The only thing I'm not used to is how bright the unit is at night while driving, but thats just me. Thanks Crutchfield!

the old one. It will take a little time to learn how to use it.

      Repeat Performance (customer)

Written By Randy, Knoxville, TN on Monday, March 03, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the third Alpine unit that I have purchased. Obviously I have been well pleased so far. The Alpine has all the features that I need and none of the distractons other manufacturers load onto their products just to look cool. I am sure there are other units with possibly more features, however, the CDA 9885 was a bargain considering the others that I compared it against. The performance has been excellent and Cruthfield supplied (for free, or greatly reduced) the peripheral accessories, instructions, and all neccessary items for an easy installation. I had been quoted (and not guaranteed) a price of $550.00 for a somewhat comparable unit installed in my 1997 BMW 540 by a local big box store. The installation tech shuddered when I told him what kind of car the unit would be installed in. He began to tell me of all sorts of problems assocaited with my vehicle and made all sorts of "outs" in case he found himself in over his head. Crutchfield said the install would be no problem for me....and guess what? It was not !!!!!!! Thanks for saving me almost $300.00 and a lot of heart-burn!

2007 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Bought 4 Alpine speakers (a pair of 6x9's and a pair of 6.5's) improved sound, but by not much. Added the F250 4 channel Alpine amp. Sound became louder, but added distortion - mad me unhappy.

Added the Alpine 9885. Cleaned up the sound. Improved the quality. Peformance excellent! But not I need a little more bass. Thinking of sticking with Alpine, and going with the F-450 mono amp, and a 10" sub (TBD).

I was a Pioneer guy, now I'm an Alpine guy. Love the products, love the quality. Get this stereo!
