Denon

Feast on an endless buffet of music

A network music player presents you with virtually unlimited ways to play your favorites or discover new music. Access your computer's music library, Internet radio stations, and online music services through your wireless home network.

Our take on the Denon S-52

by Tara W.

Here's one of the most versatile table radios we've ever seen. The Denon S-52 features a CD player, a built-in iPod dock, a USB input, and an AM/FM radio tuner that picks up digital HD Radio™ signals. Plus, built-in Wi-Fi technology lets you access the digital music stored on a PC in another room. You can also listen to XM Satellite Radio by adding optional accessories.

PC music, Internet radio, and more
The S-52 connects to your wired or wireless home network so you can listen to your favorite PC music or Internet radio stations. You can even tap into Rhapsody®, a popular online digital music service. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations. A handy scroll wheel on top of the radio lets you quickly search songs, artists, or Internet radio stations.

Advanced tuner with HD Radio™ technology
The S-52's radio tuner not only pulls in regular AM and FM signals, but also the new digital HD Radio signals that many stations now broadcast. When you tune in HD Radio signals, you'll hear a marked improvement in sound quality — FM can approach CD-quality sound, while AM nears current FM quality. And you'll get access to free, additional digital-only channels some radio stations offer — channels you can only pull in with an HD Radio tuner.

XM Satellite Radio ready
Add satellite radio to the mix with an optional XM Mini-Tuner package and activate your XM subscription. You'll get access to over 170 channels of music, sports, and news programming.

Note: requires Windows Media Player 11 (or later) with media sharing enabled to access music from your PC. Broadband Internet connection suggested for Internet radio and Rhapsody music service.

    Features

Overview: The Denon S-52 Wireless Network CD music System features a built-in CD player, AM/FM tuner, HD radio, and iPod dock. The system also features an Ethernet jack and wireless LAN antenna so you can  listen to your music files stored in your PC or Mac wirelessly as well as listen to your internet radio wirelessly. In addition, the unit is XM ready and features an auxiliary input, USB port and headphone jack on its front-panel.

Amplifier and Speakers: The Denon S-52 features a pair of full-range 2.5" front-firing drivers and a pair of 3" down-firing woofers powered by a built-in 10 watt x 2-channel amplifier. The S-52 features the following two audio technologies to produce excellent sound quality from a compact system.

    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ is a technology that automatically corrects the tonal balance of an audio system when the volume is changed. It is based on psychoacoustic research that better match to human perception than other loudness compensation. The tonal balance is adjusted continuously with variation in both program material and volume setting.
    • Audyssey BassXT: Audyssey BassXt is a solution to extend bass performance to lower frequencies without increasing cabinet size, driver size or weight. BassXT actively monitors the incoming low frequency signal and drives woofers to there maximum capability at all volumes, thereby producing deep bass at all volume levels. This allows the woofer to play low bass content when it can and protects it only for the few time when it can't. It is not like simple bass boost or tone control as the system is fully customized for the individual speakers used in the system by DSP processing and works in real time.

CD Player: The Denon S-52 features a front-loading single-slot CD player that supports CD-Audio, CD-R and CD-RW discs. It can also playback MP3 and WMA files stored on CD-R and CD-RW. The built-in CD player

MP3/WMA Playback: The S-52 can play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO 9660 level 1 format. MP3 files should be recorded between 32 and 320 kbps (128 kbps recommended), and WMA files at 64 to 192 kbps. The unit also supports ID3-Tag (Ver. 2 and 3) standards or META tags for displaying your MP3 and WMA song/album/artist information. The S-52 will support up to 1000 files and 255 folders.

iPod Dock: The Denon S-52 is equipped with an iPod dock under a fold-up door on the top-panel of the unit. The unit comes supplied with three iPod dock adapters that support the iPod mini, iPod Photo (20/30GB) and iPod Photo (60GB). The S-52 also supports the iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation) and iPod touch (1st/2nd generation), as well as the iPhone/iPhone3G when used with the dock adapters supplied with the iPod. You can control your iPod from the Denon S-52 or from its supplied remote control. Your iPod's controls also remain fully functional. Your iPod will charge when docked to the S-52.

USB Input: A mass storage device can be connected to the front panel USB input to play MP3, WMA, WAV, MPEG-4 AAC and FLAC files. The S-52 is compatible with mass storage devices in the FAT16 and FAT32 formats.

Network Audio: The Denon S-52 is equipped with an Ethernet port and WiFi (WLAN) antenna that lets you build a network environment (either hardwire or wireless). This unit offers the following PC network functions.

    • Music Server: This function lets you play music files and playlists (MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, and FLAC) stored on your computer (music server) connected to the S-52 via a network. With the S-52's network audio playback function, connection to the server is possible using on of the following technologies - Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service or Windows Media DRM10. To connect the Denon S-52 to your DLNA-compatible home network you need to install TwonkyMedia software to your PC. Twonky Vision is a software program needed to manage your iTunes database and can be downloaded from www.twonkyvision.com for a one time fee of $29.99. Currently Denon is providing a 30-day free trial of TwonkyVision Media Server.
    • Internet Radio: Internet radio refers to radio broadcast distributed over the Internet. Internet radio stations from around the world can be tuned in. The S-52's Internet radio station list is created using a radio station database service (vTuner). This database service provides a list edited and created for the Denon S-52 system. The Denon S-52 is equipped with the following Internet radio functions:
      • Internet radio stations in MP3 and WMA format can be listened to.
      • Stations can be selected by genre and region.
      • Your favorite radio stations can be registered by accessing an exclusive Denon Internet radio URL from a Web browser on your computer. This function is managed for individual users, so you must provide your MAC or e-mail address. Exclusive URL: http://www.radiodenon.com.

Auxiliary Input: If you don't own an iPod, you can use the front panel portable auxiliary 3.5mm input to play music from your portable audio player. An optional stereo mini cable is required to connect your portable unit to the S-52.

Headphone Output: The unit is equipped with a  front-panel 3.5mm headphone output jack for connecting an optional set of headphones. Connecting a set of headphones will mute the unit's speakers.

    Excellent piece of equipment

Written By goofyjim, Lansdale, PA on Saturday, November 01, 2008

This thing has everything I wanted in one unit plus internet radio. I had problems with 3 previous units but since they corrected the firmware it has worked like a charm. I would recommend it to anyone who wants true versatility in a tabletop radio.

    Almost great

Written By Russell, Redmond, WA on Sunday, October 26, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this radio. I have been looking for about 6 months for something with this set of features for my bedroom. I have a Denon receiver for my entertainment setup, and know that although pricey, Denon delivers quality.
issue #1: iPod integration- not compatible with iPhone. I could get my music to play through it, the iPhone complains that the device is not meant for it. On the plus side, the S-52 is so well shielded that you don't get the normal cellular interference.
issue #2: price. I only bought after I found one in scratch & dent. I think it was just a return, because there were no scratches or dents. Great service from Crutchfield - everything was there that was supposed to be, just that the box appeared to have been opened, and someone had tried to run through the network setup.
issue #3: I know it is early, but really wish the wireless could have been 802.11n compatible. It is 802.11g, which is pretty standard now. The setup was a bit tedious, but without a different interface (i.e. keyboard) I'm not sure how else they would have you input the settings, and you only have to do it once. One other wish - although proprietary, would be nice if they could get a deal with Apple to offer AirTunes as a feature.
In summary, I think this is a good radio. It is attractive, sound quality is great, and it appears well built. The multiple level display dimming is great in the bedroom.

    Nice radio...

Written By Pat, Columbia, MD on Monday, March 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the receiver primarily because of the iPod dock, HD Radio, and Denon's reputation, though some of the other features such as the Internet radio interested me as well. Overall, I am enjoying this product very much.

iPod integration is very good; I can completely control the iPod's functions either through the jog wheel or the remote. A couple of drawbacks: there are only two kinds of adapters for the different linds of iPods and the iPod's menu display isn't mirrored in the unit's display.

XM Radio setup is pretty easy-just plug the minituner in, register the receiver, and enjoy. Tuning is easy; just turn the jog wheel up or down. A couple of gripes here too; a direct tune option would be nice and perhaps actually placing the mini-tuner in the unit itself to cut down on the number of wires coming out.

Radio reception is generally good; I could receive most of the FM HD radio stations available in the Baltimore-Washington area; I have yet to pick up any AM HD stations, although some are available.

Internet radio seems to work fairly well, though you can't receive some stations due to incompatible format. Overall quality,of course is dependent on your network connection and the station's bit rate. Higher bit rates actually sound pretty good.

Overall sound quality is very good, the Audissey "automatic" EQ system works fairly well for most kinds of music, though it sounds like the bass is overboosted at times, especially with some radio transmissions and the iPod. Some kind of manual EQ would be nice to help control this overboosting.

    Other pluses:

    -Dual alarms; loudness is adjustable.

    -Sleep switch

    -Adjustable display brightness

-Automatic time adjustment through wireless connection

    Other drawbacks:

-Some disply menus not laid out well and hard to navigate.

-Unable to get the free twonkymedia program to connect my itunes library to my unit.

-Unit has a big foot print.

All in all, a very good product. I haven't had the chance to use Crutchfield's excellent customer service yet, but I did appreciate the quick shipping (I received it only a coule of days after I placed my order). Geeks will appreciate this product with all the connections...
