Vehicle-specific enclosures with subs? Say what?

Instead of the usual sub in a box, the manufacturer creates a molded enclosure that fits perfectly into a convenient spot in your specific vehicle, housing a high-quality sub. Some enclosures even include a built-in amp, for the ultimate in stealth bass. The advantages? You don't lose much space (if any), your sub is perfectly matched to its enclosure, and your enclosure has a factory look that won't tell potential thieves you have an awesome sound system. Doesn't get better than that.

Our take on the MTX Amplified ThunderForms

by John Pollard

Crinkled french fries, discarded receipts, old gum wrappers — you probably have everything in the hidden corners of your vehicle except great bass. ThunderForm enclosures fill the nooks and crannies of your vehicle with low tones that stand out, but their factory look blends right in.

MTX engineers evaluate the "sonic signatures" of top-selling vehicles so they can design ThunderForms as custom acoustic matches. Each ThunderForm fits and blends inconspicuously into your vehicle, so you get great bass without losing any space. They're made of high-density polyethylene resin to curb resonances — they deliver bass that's tight, hard-hitting, and way down low. The airtight enclosure provides the correct internal volume to yield optimum bass response.

This amplified ThunderForm comes equipped with a cool-running 200-watt amp that's custom designed to provide optimal power without straining your vehicle's electrical system. MTX's Electronic Bass Control (EBC) lets you adjust the bass level from the driver's seat. A variety of inputs allow easy integration into your vehicle's sound system, and the included 20' power harness simplifies supplying power to the amp.

  • custom-fit powered subwoofer

    Features

Class D Amplifier: The enclosure contains a built-in 200-watt Class D (digital) amplifier that allows RCA or speaker-level input. The amplifier is highly efficient and designed specifically for use with the subwoofer in the enclosure.

Built-in Low-pass Filter: The low-pass filter frequency can be varied from 50 to 150 Hz for a seamless transition between the output of this unit and that of the other speakers in the vehicle.

High/Low-Level Input: The unit offers one pair of RCA inputs that can be used with a High Level (speaker-level) or Low Level (preamp-level) input signal. A pair of High Level input wires (tinned bare wire-to-RCA plug) is included.

Auto Turn-On Feature: When the Thunderform is connected using a speaker-level input signal, the amplifier will automatically detect the signal and turn on and off with the radio. The auto turn-on feature does not operate when a preamp level input signal is used, therefore the remote turn-on lead should be connected.

External Bass Control: The external bass control allows you to adjust the bass level from anywhere in the vehicle.

Terminator Woofer: This enclosure comes loaded with one 12" Terminator woofer.

Note: The woofer has an unusual impedance, specifically designed with the amp, and cannot be replaced with a standard MTX model.

Molded Enclosure: The molded, high-density polyethylene resin enclosure resists flexing and dampens resonance.

    Controls and Inputs

    Controls:

    • Gain Control: rotary control that allows you to set the gain of the amplifier
    • Crossover Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the crossover from 50 to 150 Hz

    Inputs:

    • Input: left and right RCA jacks; these jacks allow speaker-level input when the supplied RCA high-level input wires are connected
    • EBC: mini-jack for use with supplied external bass control
    • Harness: 3-pin jack for use with supplied wiring harness
    • Fuse: installed 20A ATC fuse

    Warranty

5 Year Warranty Terms: This product carries a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

    • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
    • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.

Excellent!!!! - after some adjustments of course

Written By Jeff K, La Plata, MD on Tuesday, August 28, 2007

I have an 07 F150 SuperCrew and I ordered this to supplement my stereo. First the fit and color match is perfect and mistaken for factory installed (even by the dealer!!) The sound was at first very dissapointing until, I found some hidden settings in my Kenwood stereo I didn't think to look for. After you tune this properly (about ten minutes in the vehicle listening to your desired music and adjusting sound controls like eq, bass, treble, etc) its ready to impress. It can still rattle the mirrors, and vibrate the seats if you want, or turn it down halfway or to low, and just supplement your music and your unaware passenger will say-"Wow, this truck came with a really nice sounding stereo." 200 watts is plenty for the average adult in a pickup truck.. Bottom Line- I recommend this product The bonus- Crutchfield was great with my order, Helped me with some ideas of what may have been wrong when i first installed it and thought it wasn't sounding right, and It showed up on my door the NEXT DAY after ordering too!!

I bought this unit for my 2006 F-150 Super Cab. I was used to the sound of a 10" sub. The sound this unit produced was awesome. It was a tight deep bass that sounds great with all my music. If you are looking for great bass from an affordable single 12" powered sub this is it.

    Great Sub!

Written By Joseph, Sacramento, CA on Friday, March 09, 2007

It won't win you any competitions, but for 200 watts this thing sure does hit!

I was looking for something that would fit in the cab of my '07 F-150 super cab. This unit fits perfectly underneath the rear seat, no loss of legroom and doesn't interfere with the jack.

I hooked the sub up to my factory radio. This meant I had to hook up a line out converter to my radio. Once I had everything set up it worked flawlessly.

I had a 600 watt MB Quart system with a 15" sub in my previous car and this thing hits just about as good. Of course, its not a 15" so there are some LOW LOW notes that it cant hit, but for the most part it does what I need it to do. I listen to rock, reggae, rap, and this sub provides the low end that I was missing with my factory set up.

I turned up my stereo and listened from outside my truck and I couldn't really hear the sub, except from the front. So, if you're behind someone at an intersection they might hear the bass, but you won't have to worry about shaking your neighbors up when you come home.

Overall it sounds great for being only 200 watts, but don't expect to win any competitions with it!

    MTX Amplified ThunderForms

Written By techtoolsupply, Detroit, MI on Saturday, June 24, 2006

What an ingenious sub! I still can not believe how hard this little unit hits! I was following my wife to the gym and she complained that the bass was shaking her (one car ahead). The bass is a very clean tight sounding bass, exactly what I was looking for.

The box fits PERFECTLY underneath the rear drivers side seat of my '06 F150 and in no way interferes with the passenger seating. Hook-up took a solid hour.

This was my first purchase with Crutchfield and I must say, their customer service is excellent (Thanks Harley!).
