Denon

Our take on the Denon DP-29F

by Tom Mathew

Dust off those vinyl records and put them back into your listening rotation with the DP-29F turntable from Denon. Even if your receiver or amp does not have a phono input, this versatile turntable will play through your system — you don't even need a phono adapter. The DP-29F includes a built-in phono preamp, so you can hook it up to your system through a standard analog connection. But if your receiver does have a phono input, and you'd prefer to use it, a small switch beneath the platter disengages the preamp.

The DP-29F features an automatic system that starts the music with a simple touch of a button. When the record is finished, the tonearm automatically returns to its original position. By eliminating the need to handle the tonearm manually, you dramatically minimize the chances of inadvertently scratching your records. There's also a manual lifter mechanism that allows you to place the needle on the record wherever you want, just in case you'd like to skip to a song in the middle of a side. And for solid, dependable playback, the DP-29F has been precision manufactured with rigid diecast aluminum for perfectly stable turntable rotation.

Features

High-precision Diecast Aluminum Turntable: The turntable has been precision manufactured with a rigid diecast aluminum to produce uniform inertial mass for perfectly stable turntable rotation, an essential component of high fidelity sound during playback.

Automated System for Easy Operation: The DP-29F employs an automated system that starts playing the record with the single touch of a button and finishes play at the end of the record by returning the tone arm to its original position and stopping turntable rotation. This system ensures that you do not inadvertently scratch your records when you play them.

Manual Operation: The DP-29F also has a manual lifter mechanism that allows you to place the needle on the record wherever you want, just in case you'd like to skip to a song in the middle of a side.

Built-in Phono RIAA Equalizer: Since the DP-29F includes a built-in phono RIAA equalizer, you can connect the unit to an amplifier or receiver that does not have a phono preamp input without the use of an adapter. If your receiver does have a phono input, and you'd prefer to use it, a small switch beneath the platter disengages the built-in phono equalizer.

33-1/3 and 45 RPM Compatible: The turntable will play at 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds. An adapter is included for playing 45 rpm records.

MM Cartridge Included: The DP-29F comes with a fixed mount MM (moving magnet) cartridge so you may enjoy your record collection as soon as you connect the DP-29F to your home stereo system. After approximately 400 hours of playback, Denon recommends the stylus be replaced with the DSN-82 stylus.

Output: The turntable has a hardwired output cable with left and right male RCA plugs. These can plug directly into your receiver or amplifier. There is no need for patch cables.

Listening to Records Again

Written By L. P, Hickory, NC on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon DP-29F is exactly what I was looking for to listen to a stack of records I saved from the 60's and 70's. It is very easy to set up and operate. Although it is very light weight, it works very well. I purchased it after my 32 year old turn table died. May not meet the needs of someone looking for studio quality.
Pros:
Easily set up and very simple to operate.
Cons:
Light weight.

Get the DP-300F...AVOID this toy...

Written By Amalgaman, Pound, Va. on Monday, December 10, 2012

This item may be alright for kids from 8-12. After that, they deserve better. I paid for a used DP-29. First, my experience in Hi-Fi:

I began putting my first decent system together in 1977. I bought a BIC 940, then a Kenwood amp and AR-18 speakers, later a cassette deck. I began to collect, sell and thoroughly enjoy speakers from the AR's to Bolivar's, Technics, Micro-Acoustics, KLH's, Pioneers and as many amps and tape machines, tuners , CD, SACD, DVD-Audio and on to Japanese consumer heaven...

After receiving my Ebay "prize" I gave it a look over. I thought,"NO way I would put good vinyl on this...who knows what kind of stylus it has? How much weigh does it track with? If I want to change cartridges do I really need epoxy, a hack-saw and two pennies taped to the head shell for weight? I threw it away.

It came time a year and a half later to get a real but inexpensive turntable. It HAD to be automatic as I am prone to falling asleep and finding the record in the lead out groove...for hours. The controls are on mthe outside of the dust-cover where they should be.

The DP-29 is built on the same design pattern as the cheapest asian offerings. Do yourself a favor and get a 300. It is as if two different companies designed and built them but although the DP-300 F is a step-up dollar-wise it is a real turntable, the other, a toy...the tonearm is just awful, the flutter is a problem as are the "little feet". Good for a classroom...maybe.
Pros:
Cheap, easy to set-up, easy to chose cartridge.
Cons:
You can only choose cartridge that is affixed to arm. No counterweight. Bad drive system, noisy. Cartridge cheap.... YUCK!

Denon DP29F

Written By Jennifer, Hilo, Hawaii on Friday, October 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The set up is easy. Unfortunately I didnt open the box or set it up for nearly a year after buying it. It was a Christmas gift and we just didn't get around to bringing the boxes of LP's out of storage, or creating a good set up area soon enough. I know Crutchfield would have taken it back, it isn't their fault. My advice is set it up and use it right away to hear how your music sounds. I'm not sure if it is the cartridge- I see other reviewers mention issues with the sound because of the cartridge. In our case it actually plays the albums at a slightly higher speed. There is no adjustment for turntable speed on this model. I contrasted the playback to the artists website versions, or my purchased cd versions and indeed the sound is way off. One reviewer improved the sound by turning off a preamp on the model, which I couldn't locate or don't have. Another another reviewer said theirs played 78's well. Our model has speed adjustment for 45 and 33-1/3. Ours was bought a couple years ago. Sadly, I wouldnt even feel good giving it to Salvation Army.
Pros:
Crutchfield is very helpful. I recommend them.
Cons:
Consider buying a turntable with platter speed adjustment, and a mechanized tonearm lift so you can and cue the needle safely to different tracks easier.

Did not work

Written By Ron V, Frisco, TX on Tuesday, October 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was recommended this product to give to my son for his 20th birthday at college. The first unit did not work and as the stylus arm and motor would not activate. A second unit was shipped and this unit had a humming noise when playing records. It was hooked up to two different amps with the same result. He is on his third try to get a unit to work for him and we have our fingers crossed that this one does the job. Denon should probably stay with making surround sound systems

Denon-29F Belt-drive turntable

Written By Mike G, Mendota, IL on Friday, September 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I just recently purchased this item, I am confident that it will be just what I needed. It runs very smoothly and plays both LP and 45rpm records without any problems. The average customer reviews give it an academic grade of "B," which implies that very few complaints have been registered against the turntable. Doubtless, I would need to spend a lot more money for one the received an "A." rating. As the leading comsumer magazine would say it's a "Best Buy."

poor craftsmanship

Written By Anonymous, international Falls, MN on Saturday, August 11, 2012

I got this turntable for my wife and have had it for around 6 months. The automatic arm no longer works, it only drops the needle on the record and then picks it back up and quits. We have to manually use the arm. Now when it comes to the end of a record it picks the needle up and drops it over and over. Tried to speak with Denon over the issue. I have to pay up front to ship it to a repair center to see if it's broken. No reimbursement for that. I explained that I'm not even remotely close to a center. Aproximately 900 miles. They said I'm sorry there is nothing I can do. I suggest if you live in a rural area, to not buy from Denon. I can see paying for the return if it turns out that the product was not defective. Not happy.
Pros:
Crutchfield is a great company to deal with! In no way should you use this review against them. They're great!
Cons:
Relatively poor customer service on Denon's part.

Relatively easy to set up. Initially I hooked the drive rubber band around the wrong post but once straightened out the turntable worked perfectly well. My wife is now listening to some 20 classical and operatic albums she picked up for $15. These old 78's sound fine.

So far, so excellent. It's still new. It sounds great through my Bose system. Certainly priceworthy. However, I would have preferred a manual tone-arm for easier selection on a record.

Easy to set up, but make sure to read all of the instructions including the illustrations. After a few missteps we had it working in relatively short time. It plugged into our Kenwood stereo system with no problem. Love the sound.
Pros:
Quick delivery, product setup easy.
Cons:
Some parts of instructions were confusing and not extremely detailed.

Buying this turntable was a very good thing. It is very easy to set up and
the sound we get when we play our 30 - 40 year old LP's brings back wonderful
memories. I highly recommend this turntable to anyone who wants to hear their
music once again.

This is an excellent turntable for the price

I do have a very extensive collection of records that I started back in the '60's. I have not
had a working turntable in a very long time. This turntable works very well and it is very
reasonable in price. But just who needs a turntable aymore? If you do, then buy this
one.

Denon DP-29F

Written By Jack, Orange, MA on Monday, August 30, 2010

Had it for a few days and so far so good, except that the turntable has no Cue setting, so
that if you are cleaning a record, you have to hold the tonearm up with one hand(so that
the record starts spinning), while you clean the record with your other hand. Makes it a
bit awkward. Also, the tonearm has the tiniest handle to hold onto, so those of us with
gorilla fingers may be a bit put out. Best to order another turntable with a Cue setting.

Very Good Sound and Quite Automatic

Written By lynivdrocer, New Haven, CT on Friday, May 28, 2010

Five stars for price. Four and a half stars for sound. Three stars for light construction. Two stars for manual usability. It averages out to 3 5/8 stars, but rounds to four. I'm running this turntable through an Onkyo TX-8555 reciever and Klipsch Heresy III speakers and it sounds very good. My biggest complaint is the way the turntable is billed as having a "manual lifter mechanism". I should have looked more closely at the photographs, but this mechanism is not a lift lever, it is a small plastic prong sticking out at a slight angle beside the cartridge. I find it extremely difficult, and I do not have gorilla hands, to manually place the needle. I pretty much just press "start" and let it do its thing, which is mostly fine because I'm usually listening front to back anyhow, but I would love to have a safer option for manually placing the needle. The two-year warranty eases my mind toward the light construction. Absolutely workable interim turntable. FYI, if you Wikipedia "belt-drive turntable" you get a photograph of this one with the platter off.

amazing performance for the price

Written By Tom, North Jersey on Tuesday, January 12, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros:
bang for the buck- probably none better. Built in pre-amp simplifies things. Solid
construction.

Cons:
None I can think of.. Had the unit for 5 months and no issues.

Summary:
There are plenty of better sounding turntables out there- but none that sound this good
at this price. I would reccomend this to anyone wanting to get into LPs but not looking to
spend a fortune.

Great Sound

Written By Aaron, Clearwater, FL on Thursday, March 26, 2009

I received this as a holiday gift from my wife's parents. It was simple to setup and has excellent sound quality.

The only issue I had is that initially there was quite a bit of sound distortion. After I ruled out dirty vinyl by trying new LP, I thought maybe it came with a bad cartridge. I came on Crutchfield.com to research how to buy a replacement cartridge, but when I read the product description for this player, it mentioned in the features a built-in pre-amp. This was not mentioned in the manual at all during setup. So I decided to check for this switch's position. Sure enough, it was set to "On" by the factory. I'm not sure why this would be; most receivers these days have built-in amplifier. Maybe they assume that if you're buying a turntable that you have separate tuner amplifier? Not sure. Anyways, switching this to "Off" fixed the issue. Now I have excellent-sounding LPs through my home stereo!

Denon DP-29F

Written By Christopher, Maryalnd on Tuesday, February 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this as a gift for my parents. They told me it was easy to use and set up.

My personal note. My parents loaned it to me. I burned all there lp's on to disc. Simple set up in the computer. Some audio software to clean the sound up on the worn out records (eliminates the echo/poping and slurring). Sounds wounderful. My parents are very thankfull.

If you are planning on burning your records on to CD format I recommend having some sort of audio software to clean up the sound and to but the breaks in. When you are ready to burn set your bit rate to at least 192kbps so you don't wreck the sound. The lower the number the worst it will sound.

I just recently got back into listening to all my old albums. So when I went looking for a new turntable I wasn't sure what to buy. I must say that I am very satisfied with this turntable. Good quality construction, good price. And plays my albums like a charm. I forgot how enjoyable it was to sit around and listen to albums. Turntable is Excellent! I would recommend.

loving it

Written By jeff, conover,nc on Wednesday, July 18, 2007

I received this turntable last thursday and it has been seeing alot of action!
I had about 100 lp's been sitting in my miller high life crate since like 83 so i decided it was time to get a turntable.
I think it has very good sound quality i started to get the audio one that had the software and cables included but i chose this one because of the wow and flutter number it was lower than the audo techs. And from the old days a lower number means mo sound to noise like s/n ratio.
i have been putting the lp's on computer and burning them to cd
i bought the turntable from one of my favorite sales people Rhonda ext 4068(doesnt hurt to talk to a sweet talking woman does it )
been dealing with crutchfield for almost 20 years a first class company!
The only reason i gave it a 4 was it would have been great to be able to change the stylus to a different brand.
enjoy!!!!!!!
