Connect your Harmony remote to your computer with the supplied USB cable to get started. Intuitive touchscreen controls
The easy-to-read touchscreen display features "Activity" buttons for one-touch control of your system. For example, to play a DVD, just press "Watch a DVD." The remote instantly evaluates your system, turns on or off the appropriate components, selects the proper settings, and starts the DVD player. The remote's screen then changes to show the controls you'll need for watching a DVD — like play, pause, skip, and volume.

Optional RF control
The Harmony 1000 can also send radio frequency (RF) commands in addition to regular IR (infrared) signals. Overview: The Harmony advanced universal 1000 touch-screen Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site.

3.5" Touch Screen: The Harmony 1000 Remote features a brilliant full-color 3.5" touch-screen with large, colorful icons that provide easy functionality and control. You can actually select or add your own backgrounds for the display.

One Touch Activity Control: The Harmony 1000 uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system of up to 15 separate components. You can use one of the touch-screen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.

Computer-Based Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com with the supplied software CD-ROM via a USB connection between the Harmony Remote and your PC (USB cable supplied). Using Logitech's Smart State Database of electronic devices you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including TiVo, HDVCR, HDTV, Plasma Displays, Monitors, Projectors, Lighting Control, CD/DVD-R, PVR (Personal Video Recorder), Satellite Radios, Amplifiers, DVD Players, Receivers, Dual VCRs and even combination devices like DVD-VCR components.

Compatibility: The Harmony 1000 remote controls everything from HDTV's to PVR/DVR's, from laserdiscs to VCR's, and even lighting controls. Logitech's on-line database includes 5,000+ brands and 175,000+ IR device codes.

IR/RF Commands: The Harmony 1000 sends both infrared and radio frequencies making it possible to control devices without pointing or direct line-of-sight. In order to use the remote's RF commands, you will also need the Harmony RF Wireless Extender (part # 596RFEXT, sold separately). When the remote and RF extender are used together, you can control equipment inside a cabinet or even in the next room.

Lithium-ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 1000 includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. The remote is charged in an upright, horizontal position. Before using the remote for the first time the battery should be charged for about 8 hours.

Languages: The Harmony 1000 allows you to choose from English, German, Spanish, French or Portuguese for the menu language.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display.

Touch-Screen Numeric Keypad: The remote features a touch screen numeric keypad that can be activated to allow you to go directly to a channel on your TV.

Learning function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Hard Keys: The unit not only features a touch-screen panel but it also utilizes Hard-Keys as well, such as volume and channel up and down buttons, search arrow keys, an OK (enter) button and a Back button.

Are you kidding me

The only reason that this review is a one star is that a "no star" was not an option. My two reasons are:
1. It is not easy to set up. It took numerous calls to the help line to find an Indian dialect that I could understand. Finally when I found one, I discovered that they had failed to inform me that a critical firmware update was required. I could have completed a doctoral dissertation in the time required to set up the Harmony 1000.
2. The touch screen does not work well. A nano-technology pointer is required and then one must hit the exact pixel on the screen to make a selection. Otherwise one gets a random distribution of the displayed functions. Forget using your finger, and forget trying to fast forward through the ads.
My advice is to get a remote with buttons.

The Best

What a great device. I didn't have any problem setting it up, or making changes. Using the wireless extender, I can control my XM portable device, Yamaha Receiver, Denon Receiver, Cable Box and Blue Ray player, all when they are closed up behind solid wood cabinet doors. I have expanded my use to other TV locations in the house, and I have a separate button for each room or activity. It is too bad that some of the writers here had less luck than me. I was set up and rolling in 10 minutes, and I can make a change as needed in a short amount of time, and reprogram my device. I would recommend to all.

Not user friendly

I have had this remote for a week now and have had to call tech support 3 times to get things working correctly. I know, your probably thinking "he's just a dummy" but I dont think so. The self programming is not user friendly or intuitive so when you get stuck you must call. When you call they will get it working the way you want but you will still not know how to do it yourself. Just be sure to find out everything you want to know the remote in the first 60 days because after that you are cut off of live support! Also, I was told by the tech today that the software needs to be updated. A new version is due out in a couple of months so that it will display the time and slideshow like it is supposed to. I mean for crying out loud, they sent this thing out and they cant even get the time to show correctly! My opinion is that it is that even though I like the device and the concept is nice, but this thing is just not ready for the market. I have a couple of weeks left in my Crutchfield return window so I will use that time to decide. If I return I will follow up with another post. Good luck!

Works well, but Ergonomically Unusable

Logitech software works well. Crutchfield was excellent. The problem is that the unit does not sit in your hand very well. I wanted the best remote and this is the best. However, you always needed to be looking at the unit to press a hard button or a soft button on the touchscreen. I returned this item and bought a Harmony 890. This model is shaped like a traditional remote and has only hard buttons. The advantage is that 1) you can press the correct button without looking at the unit and 2) the functions of the hard buttons can be changed for your own needs. This creates more programming options for the advanced user. The 890 still has a color screen with hard buttons to choose what is on the color screen.

In sum, the unit works fine, but is a real pain to use. Buy the 890 advanced instead!

difficult setup

i purchased this remote because of the RF feature. my componenets are in the closet behind the flatscreen tv. it was difficuklt to get all the older components to synch up (the old tivo and old cable box) however it was a temporary ordeal as we awaited the arrival of our new tivo hd box with cable cards. now i have only one box instead of the two, and can use the hdmi cable instead of the component cable. deleting the old components and adding the new one to the remote was easy and everything seems to work fine. i'm looking forward to adding some other thing to the remote (light dimmers etc) 4/5 because of the problem with the old components

The setup on this remote is real easy to perform. Keypad is easy to use and beats having multiple remotes around. The only problem is that once in a while the remote locks up and in order to reset you must remove the battery.

Smply the best!!!

Someone who has a lot of gear like me this is the best thing that could happen. 8 hours of charging out of the box and you are ready to download, go online, program and enjoy. I have to admit the programming is pretty easy, but I did have to go back a couple of times and fine tune how my remote works with all of my components. The touch screen is a great feature and with the ease of use that my wife and parents can understand how to use it(Thats impressive). Finally I don't have 8 remotes on the coffee table, just one.

great product! does what it says

this product is great it was super easy to set up but of course i had to fine tune it to be personalized. the only reason i gave it four stars intead of five is because it did take me about two hours to program but like i said i did have to make it my own. it would have taken me about 20 min just with the software. I only had one conflict with my projector because you need to press the power button twice to turn it off, but with a few setting changes it worked. i also changed the background and made a slide show for when it is placed on the charging dock. my theatre is only about 11" by 8" and all my components are in sight but i had no problem conecting to all my components. BUYERS BEWARE if you did not set up your own system i would not recommend this it really requires you to know how it is set up. they are very basic questions but it may be frustrating if you had it set up by someone else. i also used the IR detector to add controls for a cheaper brand motorized screen that was not in the data base but i did this with ease. i programmed the buttons for this to be used only when my projector was on and it works perfectly. these are great remotes but i wouldn't be very happy if i payed the $500 they are new i would really recomend that you buy them from crutchfield. other than the few problems i stated i was very pleased with my purchase.

Purchased this for our main living room. Wow what a great device! We replaced our previous logitech (placed now in our bedroom) and it functions perfectly! The online set-up is very easy (for computer fanatics like myself) and would be a little more difficult for those not so computer savy. I did not have any problems, so I'm not sure of Logitech's customer service or what to expect if you called them. Best: controls all of our devices: Samsung 52" LCD 1080P, Panasonic Blu-ray player, WII gaming system, Onkyo Receiver, Time warner cable box, Sony 400 CD changer/player and also our fireplace controls and A/C controls for the summer. Worst: Gotta remember at least once a week to place it on the charger station or it will go dead!. The touch screen does get filthy with finger prints often (so keep a cloth handy). Other than that this device is incredible and well worth the money paid. THANK YOU CRUTCHFIELD! Recommend! A+++

I received the remote and spent 3 days trying to program over the internet. I never did get it done. I have two other Harmony remotes and have no problems with them. I had to return the product and my replacement has been lost in the mail. The touch screen would not function at all.

I have a movie room with numerous components from the things you would expect to the screen and the lights. I had another remote that was programmed by the consultant I used to build my room. When I bought a new device I couldn't figure out how to do the old remote and didn't want to pay the consultant again so bought the 1000. This is the 4th Harmony I purchased and I think they are all great. I programmed everything in the room and it all works perfectly. Took me a couple of times but got it all done within a couple of hours. Great device.

I have a Harmony 980 remote, and was using it in the den to operate my home theather system, and xbox 360. I wanted to set up a new home theather system in the master bedroom, so I waited for the price to come down on the Harmony 1000. I have always had a problem seeing and finding buttons on remotes, this Harmony 1000 lights up a screen and I can always see what I am doing, it keeps me from pushing the wrong buttons in the dark. I hooked up the Harmony 980 to operate the equipmen in master bed room and the Harmony 1000 to operate the equipment in the den. Every things works as it is suppose to every time. I recommend the Harmony 1000 remote, it is the best.

Solid Product!

Great product! It did take a bit of time to set up due to a technical problem with my DVD recorder. If you have challenges loading the data call tech support imediately. I fought it for a while, but one call fixed it! That is the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5.

I've tweaked my setup several times to get the remote to work exactly the way I wanted it to, but now it is perfect. My father in law will now be able to watch TV unsupervised!

Awesome

This is by far, the best remote I have ever purchased. I have read that many people have had issues with programming, firmware, etc. I haven't encountered any of those issues. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

The remote is beautifully built with a piano black screen surround and a brushed aluminum finish on the face place. The back is a matte rubber finish which is sturdy and feels good to the touch.

Set up and programming couldn't have been easier. Just install the software, answer a few questions, input the brand and model number of your components and you're done!!!

My set up consists of a 47" LCD, an Onkyo A/V receiver, a Technics CD player, a scientific Atlanta digital cable box and a Sony DVD player. All components work flawlessly.

Go out and buy one of these units, you will not be dissapointed.

I recently moved and wanted to set up a media center in a closet away from the living room. I had heard several comments and reviews about how easy this remote is to use and was even more amazed when I got mine. It took me longer to get all the model numbers than it did to set up the remote and extender. Logitech does all the programming and legwork for you allowing you to enjoy your remote minutes after you get it out of the box.

I have the remote set up for:

A/V Receiver
Cable Box/DVR
Blu-Ray
XBOX
HTPC

Set your Extender lines over the eyes, plug your remote and extender into your PC, have Logitech update your commands, plug the IR lines into the extender and you're finished.

I would recommend this remote to anyone that wants a remote that'll operate all your equipment from anywhere in the house, is simple enough for anyone to use, and stylish enough for any coffee table.

Harmony - 90% great

The Harmony remote takes the place of four different remotes in my entertainment center - DVD player, Receiver, TV and Cable tuner.

It was very easy to set up. The software when installed automatically searched the Internet for updates and installed to ensure it was current. Make sure you have the make and model number of every component you would like to control. You will also need to know the settings for every function - for example, to watch TV the TV has to be in HDMI input 2, Receiver on Video 2.

The Harmony has a 'game' sequence, however my PS3 uses bluetooth and the Harmony does not support that out of the box, so I do have to turn on the PS3 separately.

Once programmed the remote is very easy to use. Simply push the activity you would like to complete, Harmony gets everything set for you. Accessing some advanced features of your equipment is cumbersome, so you will need to maintain your regular remotes at a convenient location - for example, if I want to color calibrate my TV I use the regular remote control.

Overall an excellent remote that was very easy to program, and it does very well at the 90% of tasks that I commonly do on my A/V system.

I was really excited to get this remote after reading several glowing reviews of it on Crutchfield, I decided to buy it. I've been using it for about a month now, and it is nice. I definitely like the single remote, and programming it was EASY. The auto programming was a little too easy, so I definitely had to go into the custom options to tweak it to work exactly how I liked it... but the sheer fact you can add all these activities and then tweak every single button is perfect. There's a few things I'm missing still.. like I added a custom sequence, but the button has no label. The only thing I've found lacking on this remote is that the range seems to be very limited. I have some difficulty using it at 12-15 feet away, which seems really limited and is why I gave it only 4 stars.

Logitech making it easy

Purchasing the Harmony 1000 was a great idea. My wife was getting tired of the 6 remotes sitting on our coffee table and for her to try and figure out how to turn on the TV, Comcast box, HD or Blu-ray player w/the receiver became too much of a hassle. So I did some research on Crutchfield.com and decided to get the remote that would save our marriage.

Sitting behind a computer and setting the 1000 up w/MS Vista was a snap (don't understand why people complain, Vista works great). Logitech asked several questions on the equipment I have and how I have it setup to work w/each componet that I own. I tweaked the 1000 hear and there and now my wife can watch what ever she wants without throwing the remotes at the TV. The touch screen is nice and bright and big enough to read. The 1000 sits in the charger when not in use and is actually designed to where it looks like a piece of art that you want to display.

The Logitech website found codes for the remote that other universal remotes didn't have, now the older gear in the guest room works (they are only used when mom stays the night). Now you don't have to get out of bed to turn off the TV.

Overall, this product is fantastic and I have had no problems with using it. It may cost a little bit but my wife's life is just a little easier now. Also, the help button works great and the 1000 can do pretty much whatever the other remotes can. If this could get a rating of 7 stars, I would give it a 7 easily.

Great Remote

I bought this remote several months ago. While I would not recommend it for the novice, I would consider it very well designed and relatively easy to set up for the person with moderate to high home entertainment center and computer skills. I found two websites (non-Logitech) that helped greatly in setting it up. Both of these sites contain numerous icons that you can easily download for free to the remote and add to the favorites section for easy channel recognition.

A very big plus occurred a few days ago. My wife and I were hosting our daughters 5th birthday party and had numerous family up to our house. My brother in law decided to take a peek at a Red Sox game. The whole system was off. I would classify him as low skill level in this sort of thing. Before I knew it the TV and whole system was on and he was watching the Sox. He was able to easily get the system rolling due to it's truly intuitive and graphically driven design with no help from me.

I only hesitate to give it 5 stars due to a few glitches and the fact that I had to call customer service a couple times during set-up due to some mistakes in their set-up manual.

Overall great remote.

Fantastic Remote

Two weeks ago I bought the 1000, my first universal remote, to control my first home theater. It has surpassed all my expectations. The remote easily handles very new gear such as my HD tv as well as older gear such as a 7 y.o. Sony STRDE845 receiver. I had to spend a few hours in front of the computer. It was pretty easy. I am no techie and I had it controlling my tv, receiver, DVD player and Comcast cable box/DVR, plus Logitech RF extender, in 3 hours. I do agree that the documentation is flimsy at best. Everyone in my family, including my 80 y.o. father in law, finds the remote very easy to use. I use a separate remote for my Sonos system but then again I love the Sonos remote (plus I already blew about $800 on Sonos remotes). Two weeks in, I like the form factor and useability of the 1000 even better than the Sonos remote which now feels way too heavy. No, this won't brew your coffee for you but if you have reasonable expectations then you will be mightily satisfied with the 1000. I love this remote.
