Arcam

Our take on the Arcam rSeries drDock

by Ralph Graves
Arcam rSeries drDock

Provides a sturdy base for an iPad.

A dock that really delivers

Get the highest quality audio and video from your Apple portable with the Arcam rSeries drDock. This sturdy, aluminum-cased dock can accommodate your iPhone, iPod, or even iPad. When connected, the dock bypasses the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) inside your player, and feeds pure, unprocessed digital data to be its own built-in high-performance DACm, which provides more accurate, musical sound.

Exceptional audio and video

The drDock has a pair of RCA analog stereo outputs, so you can plug it into your home theater receiver or desktop speaker system and enjoy great sound. Does your system already have an outstanding DAC of its own? Then use the drDock's coaxial digital output and let your DAC do its thing. And if you want to enjoy video from your docked player, the drDock has an HDMI port so you can run uncompressed video to your HDTV for the highest quality image possible.

An important part of the Arcam ecosystem

The drDock comes with its own remote, so you can use it with just about any make of audio/video equipment. But it's also designed for use with Arcam's own line of impressive components. You can use the drDock with the Arcam Solo Mini compact stereo receiver, making it even more versatile. Or couple it with the Arcam Solo Neo Internet radio receiver. Both of these devices let you control the drDock through their own remotes.

Pass-through syncing

The drDock's power adapter has a USB plug, so you can either connect it to a wall outlet, or connect it to your computer via a USB port. Using the USB connection lets you conveniently sync your docked player.

Highlights:

  • compatible with docking iPods, iPhones, and iPads
  • built-in DAC (digital-to-analog converter) bypasses player's DAC for improved sound quality
  • HDMI video output for connecting to a TV
  • coaxial digital audio output for connecting to an external DAC
  • stereo RCA analog output
  • RS232 control input
  • sturdy cast aluminum case
  • USB port for power and syncing
  • AC power adapter
  • remote control

    Features

Overview: The Arcam drDock is an external add-on dock for iPod, iPhone, and iPad which can be connected to your home stereo system via analog stereo RCA or digital coax; as well as to your TV via HDMI. The drDock uses audiophile grade components and design techniques to deliver the best possible sound quality. An IR remote is included for wireless operation of your docked Apple device.

Aluminum Chassis: The Arcam drDock features high-quality cast aluminum construction for optimum RF shielding.

iPod Dock Connector: The Arcam drDock features an integrated top-panel iPod dock to connect your compatible iPod, iPhone, or iPad. The drDock supports audio playback, video output, remote control, syncing, and charging of your docked Apple device.

Analog & Digital Output: The drDock supports audio playback of your docked iPod/iPhone/iPad's stored music podcast, or audiobook files; as well as music apps when connected to a stereo or home theater receiver, via analog stereo RCA or digital coax (the dock's HDMI output does not support audio playback from audio only sources).

HDMI Output: In addition to playing audio, the drDock can output video from supported iPods, iPhones, and iPads. Video playback from a compatible Apple device is possible via the drDock's HDMI output. When a video-enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad is docked and playing, audio/video is routed to the dock's HDMI terminal and output to your connected television. The unit's HDMI output only supports audio/video output from a video file stored on your iPod/iPhone/iPad, or from select video apps (such as YouTube & Netflix). Output of metadata, menus, or various applications is not supported.

Note: Audio is not output from the HDMI terminal for audio only sources. You will need to connect either the dock's analog or digital audio output to your home stereo when listening to audio only sources.

Wireless Remote Control: The Arcam drDock comes with an IR remote control (CR1) for wireless operation of your docked iPod, iPhone, or iPad. The remote can be used to navigate through menus and tracks on your docked Apple device and change its play mode (repeat/random). You can also continue to operate your iPod/iPhone/iPad from its clickwheel or touchscreen. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V "coin-type" lithium battery (included).

    • Menu Navigation: You can navigate through the menus of your docked iPod, iPhone, or iPad to find your music by Playlist or Category (Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Composer, etc.).
    • Basic Playback: The IR remote provides Play/Pause, Fast-Forward/Rewind, and Skip (previous/next) playback functions.
    • Play Modes: You can switch between Repeat (track, playlist/folder) and Random (playlist/folder) playback modes.
Note: The supplied remote can be used to control your iPod, iPhone, or iPad when the drDock is not connected to a supported Arcam product. If you are using the drDock with a supported Arcam product, use the Arcam system's remote instead (see Control Port below).

Control Port: The drDock features 3.5mm Control Port and includes a 48" minijack-to-RS232 cable to connect the Arcam Solo Mini Music system (776SOLMINI, sold separately) or the Arcam Solo Neo Stereo Receiver (776SOLONEO, sold separately). This allows your iPod/iPhone/iPad's track information to be displayed on these Arcam systems.

Battery Charging: The Arcam drDock charges your iPod, iPhone, iPad while connected through its external AC power supply.

Synching: The drDock is fitted with a USB (type-B) port and comes with a 48" USB cable which allows you to sync your docked iPod, iPhone, or iPad with your PC or Mac. This USB connection can also be used to charge your iPod or iPhone (but not your iPad). You must unplug the dock's external AC power adapter and place the drDock in Sync mode (you will not be able to playback your iPod/iPhone/iPad while syncing is in progress).

equipment-Balanced Audio Technology VK3i Pre-amp Cary CAD 805 tube mono block amps B&W Nautilus 805 speakers Synergistic Research Resolution Reference cables Benchmark DAC Review- When I first hooked it up, I played the Rolling Stones GRRR I had downloaded from Itunes just using the inrnal dac. I was not impressed. The volume was low and the sound was lifeless. so then I ran it through my Benchmark dac1. Wow it came to life and sounded almost as good as any cd I had. Huge wide soundstage coming deep from behind the speakers, open midrange and good tight bass. I would recomend if you get one of these have a good external dac. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I would buy it again.
    Pros:
Gray product easy to hook up
    Cons:
    poor internal dac

Arcam drDock does a good job on performance and flexibility with both

Written By Masterpiece & Premium, Douglas, Arizona on Thursday, October 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The drDock may be a niche product, but its good performance and flexibility with both music and video make it a great partner for your system.

The supplied remote remains a tiny rectangle with buttons that are intuitively placed, but rather awkward to use. You can use it to flick between the menus on your iPod/iPhone, but the controller isn't very responsive, and can be frustrating when manipulating the slicker interface of your iDevice.

The simple versatility of the updated connections makes the drDock easy to use. Streaming stored movies or YouTube videos from your device to your TV is steady and uninterrupted; standard-def picture quality is relatively decent, with HD videos faring better with cleaner picture. While i wish some of the menu controls or the iPad's interface were displayed on your TV screen instead of staying blank when a video isn't playing, it's nevertheless a great way to watch movies as a group rather than huddling around an iPad.

Switch to playing music, and the drDock does a fine job of fitting in with existing hi-fi systems. There's enough attack and detail across the frequencies to make the drDock sound authoritative and solid, and the instruments are well separated within a fairly open soundfield. All this makes the soaring music sound exciting and dramatic - turn the volume on your amp up and you'll find the drDock stays in control of the music when things get demanding.
    Pros:
Strong sound with good detail and dynamics; updated connections for better quality; can play videos from iDevices on TV; iPad compatible; good build It might look like an unassuming product, the drDock is a versatile and capable digital dock - and if you're an Apple user, it would be a great addition to your existing hi-fi system.
    Cons:
Remote control is frustrating to use; it's not cheap

Makes iPod A Hi-Fi Audio Source

Written By Al, Lancaster, OH on Saturday, October 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to my friends and the public library, my 80GB iPod has over 17,000 songs. It never really sounded good enough to use as a hi-fi source using the headphone jack to RCA connectors. I did have a lot of songs on it that I didn't have on disc that I wanted to hear again. I had some Crutchfield Rewards Points and decided to give the Arcam rSeries drDock a try. It sounds great! This makes a big difference in sound quality. The highs are better, bass is full, imaging is much improved, and finally there is some air in these digital recordings. It makes my 128kbps files sound like CD's.
    Pros:
All in one unit, no need for a separate dock and DAC. Small size, can share shelf space with other components. Solid build and feel, rubber on the bottom so it stays in place on the shelf. It recharges the iPod as it plays. When people come over, the iPod can shuffle for hours with true hi-fi sound!
    Cons:
    none

    Arcam drDock

Written By RickA, Omaha, NE on Sunday, July 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a dock to use with my Cambridge Audio integrated amp and had seen a lot of good press regarding the Arcam drDock. After checking with several high-end audio dealers in Omaha, I found that no one here had it in stock. So I ordered it from Crutchfield. The dock arrived quickly, and is a wonderful addition to my stereo system. The sound is incredible, the dock is small enough to fit neatly inside my audio cabinet, and it is very well made. I could not be happier with this purchase.
