Onkyo

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the Onkyo TX-8255

by Dave Bar

The Onkyo TX-8255 was made for audio enthusiasts who want great stereo sound but don't need all the bells and whistles of a home theater model. It's perfect for that cozy den or bedroom where you can relax and just listen to music. And Onkyo's rock-solid construction and careful attention to detail ensure that your sound stays pure, powerful, and dynamic at all times.

Exceptional build quality
At the heart of the '8255's impressive performance is Onkyo's renowned low-impedance amplifier design. Its oversized, shielded transformer provides maximum power capacity and stability while minimizing hum. An efficient heavy-duty extruded aluminum heat sink ensures cooler operation and longer life from your receiver. Plus the rigid, reinforced chassis and aluminum front panel fight performance-robbing vibration. These thoughtful design touches enable the receiver to drive your speakers with ease, for stellar sound you'll enjoy for years to come.

Versatile, convenient, and iPod® compatible
The '8255 provides plenty of inputs for all of your audio gear. You can connect up to six components, including a turntable. The built-in AM/FM tuner features 40 presets for all your favorite radio stations, plus direct access tuning to quickly jump to a specific frequency. Two sets of main speaker outputs let you connect an additional pair of speakers. Plus, you can add Onkyo's optional control dock to enjoy listening to tunes on your iPod® through your stereo system. You can even use the receiver's handy remote to control your iPod while it's docked.

Highlights:

  • 50 watts x 2 (stereo) into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.08% THD

Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

Speaker Outputs: There are binding post connectors for the A and B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The A and B speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones; they must be turned off using the buttons above the headphone jack.

Tuner Presets: Up to 40 AM or FM radio presets can be programmed; each can be assigned a customized name, up to 8 alphanumeric characters.

Tape 2 Monitor Loop: The stereo receiver's Tape 2 input is equipped with a monitor loop for connecting an external EQ.

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10-minute increments.

Display Dimmer: The display can be adjusted to one of three brightness levels.

Remote Control

Remote Control: The remote controls this unit and compatible Onkyo cassette players and CD players.

IR Input/Output: A commercially available IR receiver can be connected to the IR In jack, allowing you to control the receiver while you're in another room, or when the receiver is out of sight. An optional IR emitter can be connected to the IR Out jack to pass IR commands to other components.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible Onkyo components.

Optional Add-on Devices

iPod Compatible: The DS-A4 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (580DSA4, sold separately) provides an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-8255. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod.

Great Little Receiver

Written By BillD, North Wilkesboro, NC on Thursday, May 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to listen to the radio through a set of bookself speakers in the den. It sounds great and the tuner does a decent job picking up FM stations 60 - 70 miles away using just a wire dipole antenna. You don't have to spend a lot to get quality.
Pros:
A great FM tuner that you can customize with the station's name instead of the frequency. It actually has a built in phono preamp.

It's in the ears

Written By Bill R., Big Pine Key, FL on Saturday, March 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Any audio product review should be guided by the ears. This unit drives our bookshelf speakers far better than our previous Teac, which was really pretty good. Second in my mind of things of importance is ease of use this unit is a straight forward piece of equipment. Endurance of course as yet unknown
Pros:
Good sound, easy to use
Cons:
It would be nice if it were smaller

Nice AMP

Written By Dennis B, Isabela PR on Thursday, January 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works fine for what I need, a stereo amp to play CD's, and most importantly a phono imput for my turntable. Most amps in this price range don't have the phono imput causing you to buy a phono pre-amp for $100
Pros:
simple to operate, sounds good and has the all important phono imput
Cons:
none

Onkyo TX-8255

Written By Judy A, West Pittston, PA on Friday, January 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I couldn't be happier. I have been trying to replace the amp of a 40-year-old system and I know very little about stereos. It came so quickly and was very easy to set up and use. I have also added another compnent and that was easy to do as well. Crutchfeld's website was easy to navagate and the user reviews helped me make my decision because I found others in the same situation who found the Onkyo TX-8255 fitting their requirements.
Pros:
solid piece of equipment, sounds great, easy to install and use
Cons:
None

Exactly why I needed....

Written By Oscar, GUAYNABO, P.R. on Thursday, December 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent replacement to be used with my Bose 901 speakers. These days it's difficult to find a dedicated stereo receiver in any local store. The tape monitor feature is a must for the Bose 901 equalizer to work and it does nicely.
Pros:
Excellent build quality Excellent price Simple hook up No distortion at high volumes Sounds like a more powerful (WPC) and priciest stereo receiver for a fraction of the price. Easy hookup
Cons:
None at all

Just What I Wanted

Written By Bill C, Alexandria, VA on Friday, November 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a basic receiver with tuner and multiple inputs for analog devices on the back. The tuner works well and the sound from my speakers is much improved regardless of input device. I did not need outputs for theater sound, and I can use the headphone output from my notebook to play music or other items off the internet. Lastly, it is compatible in size and function with the Onkyo CD player I purchased years earlier.

Delighted

Written By Robert B, Greeley, Colorado on Wednesday, October 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this reciever to replace an ultra powerful Sansui 5000X that drive a pair of massive Sansui speakers. I've owned both for 40+ years. Just wanted a simple inexpensive machine that gets AM/FM, would run my CD player and turntable. I'm a tech Neanderthal and, yet, I'm delighted. Easy to hook up, easy to use and gives great clear sound. The Crutchfield consultant said that I can run the sound of my 32" Sony Bravia TV through all of it too. May set that up this weekendas the Sony has tiny, weak speakers
Pros:
Simple and great clear sound. The reviews on the Crutchfield site helped sell me; followed by a conversation with a Consultnt: All were spot on: great machine and great service.

Onkyo sound at a great price

Written By David D, Mars Hill, NC on Sunday, September 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We needed to replace the amplifier for our office music system but we weren't sure what was compatible. The Crutchfield Advisor was very helpful and informative, and we have our new unit installed; we can really hear the difference all over the office. Anyone on a budget who wants great sound at a great price should look to Onkyo and Crutchfield first--no need to go any further!

All Positive !

Written By Itsahoot, Newton, NC on Friday, September 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver was just as advertised. Nothing has been added or taken away. It does not come with all the buzzers and bells that many of the new "High-Tech" devices. You install it, turn it on and enjoy your music. At 50 watts, with efficient speakers it is great. I am 60 years old and the neighborhood kids tell me they turn their radios off when I have my music turned up. This is my third Onkyo receiver since 1976. I plan to stay with Onkyo as long as their quality stays in their product.
Pros:
Ample power. 20-20k Hz. phono input. Enough other inputs to cover everything you need.
Cons:
No Loudness button, if that is a "Con"

Low price leader

Written By Johnny, Riverside, Illinois on Sunday, September 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Onkyo 8255 for use in my living room to listen to radio only. For that it works just fine. My particular placement, on the lower shelf of the coffee table, puts my line of sight above the unit. In that respect only, I have a slight problem with the shiny black front panel and black buttons. I would have liked more contrast and a little lrger print on the buttons. Other than that, the display is well lit and easy to read, plus has the ability to program station names in place of numbers. That was a cool feature for me(I'm 55 years old). The back panel connections couldn't be easier as it's all RCA type plug ins and speaker spring clips. No useless bells and whistles, at least from my standpoint, except for maybe the turntable inputs. Anyone still listening to vinyl is probably a higher end user and not a radio listener anyway. I would like to have had a "Sub Out" pre-amp, but speaker level inputs work fine on my POLK 108 baby sub. I would highly recommend the Onkyo as a low cost, high bang Stereo receiver, especially if you have a smaller environment and decent main speakers. The Bose 210's work well with this, but don't adapt well with strict mounting tolerances.
Pros:
Low price, with 50 watts RMS. Good looks and easy read display. Remote does everything that the main unit does and more, maybe. Easy to understand manual and hook-ups(all RCA in's and speaker spring clips)
Cons:
Shiny black face with black buttons and really small lettering (again, I'm 55 years old) make it hard to see in low light or if not looking directly at the face. I have it on a lower shelf and have to rely on a small handheld light to see it clearly. A few too many inputs on back panel, (phono, tape in/out) cause the unit to be a little larger than it needs to be. A stereo only receiver should be half this height. Also, no "Sub-out" pre-amp is a little odd for a modern unit. Still recommended...

onkyo TX- 8255 Receiver

Written By B G, Rockland NY on Monday, September 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a difference in clarity and sound with this receiver. Had an old Technics receiver and it was no comparison. The receiver was easy to connect and the hook up to the TV gave a surround sound effect with my speakers. I was even able to receive some FM stations with the antennae provided. I am very satisfied and recommend this receiver if your looking for an outstanding value for the price.
Pros:
Easy to connect, clear reception, sharp sound production
Cons:
Receiver terminals a bit tight
