Clarion

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Clarion CZ401

by Zak Billmeier

You love local radio — why not experience it to the fullest? Clarion's CZ401 CD receiver lets you enjoy the crystal-clear reception and high-quality sound that HD Radio™ technology brings to AM and FM broadcasts. On participating stations, you'll hear AM that's as clear as FM, along with FM that's almost CD quality. Many HD Radio stations also broadcast more than one channel on the same frequency, giving you even more listening choices.

Tag it!
Plug in your iPod® or iPhone® to the USB slot, and you can control it using the CZ401's knobs and buttons. You'll enjoy great sound quality, and your player stays charged while you drive. Song info shows up on the easy-to-read two-line display. When you're tuned into an HD Radio station with your iPod connected, you can "tag" songs you hear by simply tapping a button on the stereo. Then the next time you sync your iPod, you'll be reminded to buy the tagged songs in the iTunes™ store.

Build a system
Clarion made sure the CZ401 is ready for the future. You can add a Bluetooth® adapter to enjoy the safety and convenience of hands-free calling. You can connect a SIRIUS satellite radio tuner directly to this receiver without the need for a brand-specific translator cable, and that'll save you some money. Of course, a subscription is required to hear satellite radio programming.

At the core lies great sound quality
You'll be impressed by the clean power of the CZ401's built-in amplifier. Clarion's unique bass boost will add punch to your sound without getting muddy. The 3-band parametric equalizer gives you pinpoint control over the highs, mids, and lows — much more effective than the simple bass and treble controls found on most factory radios.

You can play your store-bought CDs, recordable discs, and discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You'll also find the front auxiliary input handy for plugging in a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or any other portable audio player. The receiver features three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs that'll get a clean, strong signal to your outboard amps. A built-in low-pass filter lets you control the character of your bass, while a high-pass filter lets you send your speakers the frequencies they were designed to handle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Clarion stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Clarion, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A hard plastic face-case is provide to protect the detachable face when removed. A face-fixing clip is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

H.M.I. Design: Clarion's superior H.M.I. (Human-Machine Interface) Design features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and easy-to-read illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction.

High Visibility LCD: The two-line, high visibility LCD (with black background and white characters) on the CZ401 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in almost any lighting condition.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function "On", the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and then the display returns to the screen saver display.

      Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Clarion CZ401 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the CZ401 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CZ401 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 45 watts x 4 channels (180 watts total)

BeatEQ: In addition to providing 3 preset equalization patterns (Bass Boost, Impact, and Excite), Clarion's BeatEQ lets you freely customize the level and range of the bass, midrange and treble portions of each pattern. You can tune the sound to your liking, depending on the category of music, for a more fulfilling listening experience.

      • Bass Boost: Bass is emphasized +/-3.
      • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized +/-3.
      • Excite: Bass, midrange, and treble are emphasized +/-3.
      • Custom: Adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble independently +/-7.
        • Bass: You can set the effected bass frequency to 50Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
        • Midrange: You can set the effected midrange frequency to 500Hz, 1.0kHz, or 2.0kHz and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
        • Treble: The effected treble frequency can be set to 5kHz, 10kHz, or 15kHz, and the Q-factor to 0.7, 1, 1.4, or 2
      • Off (Flat): Bass, midrange, and treble are set to 0.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound. This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of about 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What is more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

6ch/4V RCA Output: The Clarion CZ401 features 6ch/4V RCA line level outputs (Front/Rear/Sub). The non-fading subwoofer preamp output features an independent level control (+/-6) and phase adjustment (normal/reverse).

Built-in Crossovers: The Clarion CZ401 is equipped with built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers.

      • Low-Pass Subwoofer Filter: The Low-Pass Filter (LPF) for the subwoofer preamp output will send only the low frequency range through the preamp outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. The low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range).
      • High-Pass Filter: The CZ401 features a High-Pass Filter (HPF) for the unit's front & rear channels, via speaker-output or preamp-output. You can adjust the high-pass filter from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or Through (full-range). The HPF prevents low bass notes from distorting your front & rear speakers. The high-pass filter setting effects both the front & rear channels of the headunit.

Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

HD Radio: The Clarion CZ401's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio technology offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. The unit's built-in HD Radio tuner allows analog AM/FM tuning as well. Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com). No subscription fees required.

Station Text: The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Clarion in-dash unit.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Preset Stations: The Clarion CZ401offers 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets. Stations can be stored manually or automatically.

Preset Scan: Preset scan receives the stations stored in the unit's preset memory in order. This function is useful when searching for a desired preset station.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

      • Sirius Satellite Radio: To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 Sirius Connect Universal Vehicle Tuner (607SCC1, sold separately) directly to the headunit's Sirius direct connection (no proprietary interface required). You can also connect the Sirius dock-and-play adapter (607SCVDOC1) along with a compatible portable Sirius radio (all sold separately).
      • Auxiliary Input: A portable XM or Sirius Satellite Radio receiver can also be connected to the headunit via the front-panel auxiliary input.

      • Repeat Play: This function allows you to play the current track on a disc repeatedly or play a file currently being played in a MP3/WMA folder repeatedly.
      • Random Play: This function allows you to play all tracks recorded on a disc or in a folder in a random order.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Mounting: For proper CD playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

The radio does everything I hoped. The installation instructions were easily understood. The installation for a non-professional was a snap.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good unit for the price, Siruis/XM radio option, USB from MP3/ iPod input, Bluetooth option, etc. Like another reviewer stated, the HD radio drops out on an AM station I sometimes listen to. It changes the volume and there is no way to just select HD radio or not. Also, you have to hit the "D" Display button to get the clock on the display. It doesn't stay on if you change or shut the unit down.
      Pros:
HD Radio. Options for Sirius/XM radio & Bluetooth. Cost for everything you get, install kit, connector, etc.
      Cons:
HD radio drops in and out which changes the volume/ clearity on stations. No way to select or deselect the HD feature.

The Clarion CZ401 is an incredible value (got it all with free shipping, wiring harness, dash kit, and vehical specific install instructions). This is replacing an after market Kenwwod casset deck I had in my 2002 Ford Ranger. Right now it powers 4 Kenwood speakers, and sounds great! Comes with 3 sets of pre amp outputs (front, rear, and sub), so you can add and improve your system as needed. I would like to get a small sub in the near future. The USB slot is awsome, just put your CDs on it and you have a 100 disc CD changer. The one issue I have with it is you have to press a button to display the time, then after 30 seconds it times out and starts scrolling features the stereo has. So every time you want to check the time you have to press the button 1-3 times, not a deal breaker but annoying. This is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.
      Pros:
3 sets of pre amp outputs, USB drive, looks cool, great price
      Cons:
Every time you want to know what the time is you need to press a button. The time will not stay displayed on radio, after 30 seconds it times out and starts scrolling features the radio has.

This stereo was a good price at $89. When you plug in your ipod it automatically picks it up and starts playing and you can control the ipod from the dash. It also charges the ipod when plugged in.
      Pros:
When you plug in your ipod it automatically picks it up and starts playing and you can control the ipod from the dash. It also charges the ipod when plugged in. The radio seems to work well and the cd player too.
      Cons:
When i installed it there was no sound. I called crutchfield and they were very helpful. I had to connect one extra wire that wasnt in the directions. It had something to do with the onstar connection, so you need to buy the extra connection if you want to use your onstar. I imagine this is an installation issue with any stereo and onstar. The other thing i dont like is that the time or whats playing wont stay on the display. It always goes into a mode that scrolls through all the options it has

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm recommending Crutchfield to everybody I know who might need a new radio. The USB port is worth every one of the 89 dollars I spent, since I can carry all of my music on a $3 USB drive.
      Pros:
Great tech support. Two quick calls and they helped me with the wiring on my 98 Jeep Wrangler. Took an hour and a half tops to get in and going.
      Cons:
Took awhile to figure out how to set the clock, but instructions are not complicated or long, and when I looked at them carefully it walked me through the steps. Not as intuitive as they could be, but not impossible.

      Great value stereo

Written By andy, Jasper, GA on Friday, January 11, 2013

I got this for my Wife when her crappy OEM stereo started refusing to play CDs. It would keep the disk and not eject. I must say that the experience was quite pleasant. The install was very easy. Although I had to make a small modification on the mounting adapter. in order to get the trim ring on. But I understand that these adapters are designed with the vehicle in mind, and not necessarily the stereo. The wiring harness adapter made things so easy, and the schematics supplied with it was clear, and easy to understand. Even with the mod I made to the adapter, the install only took the better part on an hour, and with very little swearing.

The performance of the stereo exceeded my expectations. I was expecting this stereo to sound like a cheap stereo. But the quality was great. Other than the head unit, the system is all OEM, and it sounds like we spent more then twice what we paid. The controls were fairly easy to figure out, so I had the settings adjusted and the EQ tuned in a matter of minutes. My Wife loves the fact that she can load a thumb drive with a ton of songs instead of lugging around her overstuffed CD case.

If you are looking for an upgrade, or replace a defunct OEM stereo without breaking the bank, then you can't go wrong with the Clarion CZ401 paired with Crutchfield. One low price got me a great inexpensive head unit, and all of the adapters necessary to install it quickly and easily.
      Pros:
Easy to install, great value, and very good sound quality for the price.
      Cons:
The adapter needed a slight modification with a Drimmel tool in order to make the Clarion trim ring to fit. But not a deal breaker.

I put this in my Durango with factory amp and the Alpine audio package. This unit easily doubled the power over stock radio. The unit has a clean face and isnt "busy" looking. I ended up returning this as I listen to regular radio a lot and in order to "seek" you have to push and hold the advance button until it beeps, The buttons are small and having to push and hold, I found it took too much attention away from the road. All other features performed as advertised.
      Pros:
      Good power, clean face
      Cons:
small buttons, doesnt have one touch seek.

Great features ruined by display/visual problems

Written By Nolan, Lafayette, CO on Sunday, December 23, 2012

Great features ruined by display/visual problems - I'll explain. The features are everything listed on paper, HD Radio, front panel USB and aux inputs, etc. It's great to have all of these, unfortunately my experience with HD radio left me wanting. When going through an area where the signal would switch back and forth between digital and analog, each switch was accompanied by change in volume and a skip in the sound since the signals weren't in sync. For example, "Christmas" would sound like "ChristChristmas" or "Happy Birthday" would sound like "Hap-irthday", depending on whether is was skipping forward or back. The other issues were more disturbing, which are all pretty much related to the display. -The station displayed would not always reflect the actual station you were on. For example, if tuned to 100.1 and seek up I might see the display change to 100.5, yet I know it is on 100.3. go up again to 100.7 and it might show correctly, or it might not. Another example, if you have presets set; changing from preset 1 to 2, sometimes the display will change right away, sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes not at all. Pressing preset 2 again will update the display. -Pressing band to switch between FM1, FM2, FM3, and AM. Instead of AM, after FM3 comes FM5 (that's right "5"), but if you seek for a station, it then displays AM like it should. -Dimmer - only one level with little change. Doesn't affect the button brightness, which is way too much for night driving.
      Pros:
HD radio, EQ adjustments, front panel USB and aux input, remote,
      Cons:
Display issues, button brightness, preset buttons too small, no ISR button like other Clarion units.

      Installation Notes

Written By Rick, Los Angeles on Monday, December 17, 2012

I haven't even listened to this radio for more than a moment, these are installation notes. My previous radio was a Clarion DB355MP and I bought a Clarion again because I thought it would be easy to install, given all the work I did on the dash to make the previous model fit. For reference the installation is in a '71 Datsun PL510, and I had to cut the dash opening for the installation sleeve and then cut some tapered shims on my table saw and bond them around the opening to make it all work.

So here are my tips. 1. The screw for additional bracing (typically plumbers strap) that goes into the back of the unit is M4 x .70. This is a relatively small size and was not provided. 2. Speaker leads on the harness to the plug are only about 6" long. They were a foot long on my old Clarion and I spent a couple of hours splicing wire due to the difference. The pin-outs had changed from my old model and the harness swap was necessary. 3. I thought the old models sleeve would work with the new unit, but the fingers on the sides of the sleeve wouldn't engage, so I had to swap in the new sleeve too.

BTW, I upgraded because the disc player in the old unit quit after about 7 years. I think this is going to be an awesome radio and I'm looking forward to the additional features of HD FM, USB and 3.5 mm aux that I didn't have before.
      Pros:
High enough power for real music listening, nice heat sink in back, RCA outs including subwoofer, HD Radio, USB, and 3.5mm aux that I didn't have before. Lighted buttons.
      Cons:
Speaker wires on the wiring harness are short, about 6".
