Boston Acoustics

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics GTA-602

by Buck Pomerantz

Boston Acoustics takes much of the technology they developed for their top-of-the-line GT Reference amps, and uses it in their latest GTA Series amplifiers. The 2-channel GTA-602 amplifier puts out 60 watts RMS per channel — plenty enough power to rock a set of speakers or components — or you can drive a 4-ohm sub with 200 watts RMS in single-channel mode. Boston Acoustics' Q-Tune™ technology lets you bump up your bass, whether you're running a subwoofer or not. The inputs feature special noise-cancellation circuitry that ensures clean reproduction of your music all the way through to your speakers.

The GTA-602's compact size allows it to fit in more vehicles, while the Integral Mounting System puts the mounting holes in each corner of the frame, instead of using protruding tabs that waste space. You'll find all connections and adjustment controls recessed on one side of the amp, for a neat installation and easy adjustment. Variable high- and low-pass filters let you tune the amplified signal so your system can sound its best. An optional wired remote control gives you the power to tweak your subwoofer's level from the front seat.

Highlights:

  • 2-channel car amplifier

    Features

2Ω Stable: The GTA-602 can power a stereo load with 2Ω impedance (4Ω minimum when bridged); the lower impedance offers higher output power:

    • 60 watts x 2 @ 4 Ω
    • 100 watts x 2 @ 2 Ω
    • 200 watts x 1 @ 4 Ω (bridged)

Controls and Terminals: All the controls and terminals are conveniently mounted on one side of the amp.

    Controls

Gain: Adjust the input sensitivity with this rotary control; the range is 0.2 Volts to 5.0 Volts (line-level) or 0.4 Volts to 10.0 Volts (speaker-level).

Crossover Switch: Choose high-pass, low-pass, or off (full range) crossover.

Crossover Frequency: The crossover (low-pass or high-pass) point is continuously variable from 50 Hz to 200 Hz; the slope is 12 dB/octave.

Q-Tune: Turn the Q-Tune bass boost on/off; the boost is +6 dB at 45 Hz.

    Connections

Speaker-level Input: Use the included harness when the receiver has no RCA outputs.

Line-level Input: Left and right RCA jacks for the input signal from the head unit.

GTA-RSL: RJ-14 port; connect an optional GTA-RSL remote level control (item number 065GTARSL, sold separately); the GTA-RSL is only functional when the low-pass crossover is engaged.

Speaker Output: Two pair of set-screw terminals provided for connecting the speakers; the terminals can accept up to 8-gauge wire; the set screws are tightened/loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench.

ATO Fuse: A single 20-amp ATO-type fuse is located between the speaker and power terminals.

Power/Remote: Three set-screw terminals for connecting power, ground, and remote wires; each terminal accepts up to 8-gauge wire; the set screws are tightened/loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench.

    Great Buy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great amp, does exactly what an amp should. Provides more power and does not color the sound. Seems to be well built and i like the fact that you can turn off the crossovers. Have it hooked up to my BA components and it sounds great. I have always liked Boston Acoustics, I hear they are getting out of car audio....too bad.
    Pros:
    size, quality
    Cons:
I had to pay for it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really nice amplifier! I have this hooked up in my 99 GMC Sierra driving a Pioneer TS-SWX251 10" compact subwoofer, and this amp creates accurate, clear reproduction of my music. I've used it with many types of music, from Rock to Techno and more, and it makes for an awesome complement to my system.

Overall construction is superb, the frame is sturdy, (no flimsy parts here), the terminal posts are all VERY secure without any flex or cheapness, and the arrangement is very convenient for system wiring. The gain control is slightly easy to turn but won't go out of position, so no problem there. I have only attempted limited adjustment with the GTA-RSL remote, but so far the remote doesn't seem to make much adjustment difference (I'm thinking this is my own operator error, so more to come...).

Overall, a wonderful amplifier at a great price! Very economical for a subwoofer amp. I recommend following Buck Pomerantz' subwoofer setup guide or following the instructions in the manual. Quick and easy setup and your system will really sing. BUY THIS AMP!
    Pros:
    - Awesome, clear, accurate sound - Sturdy and stylish construction - Superb amplifier at this price point
    Cons:
    - Nothing significant, you'll love this amplifier!
