Features Overview: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a standard/medium telephoto lens featuring superb quality and portability. Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Crisp images with little flare are obtained even at the maximum aperture. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is an ideal lens to accompany a zoom when shooting in low-light conditions. It is the only lens in the Canon EF System line-up to combine the extra-small Micro USM and still provide full-time manual focusing. Compatibility: The EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is an EF Canon lens which means it is compatible with all Canon digital SLRs (those that accept EF and EF-S lenses, plus those that accept EF only; which would be the Full-frame EOS 5D Mark II), as well as Canon EOS film SLRs. Lens Construction: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens features a lens construction with 7 elements in 6 groups. Diagonal Angle Of View: This Canon standard telephoto lens provides a diagonal angle of view of 46°. Ultrasonic Motor (USM): With the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), you can expect fast and quiet focusing capability. Auto/Manual Focus: To shoot in Autofocus mode, set the focus mode switch on the lens to "AF". To manually focus the camera, set the switch to "MF", and focus by turning the focusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode. Optional Accessories: You can attach optional filters to the filter mounting thread on the front of the lens. You can also attach an optional lens hood. See Digital SLR Cameras that work with this item Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs (what are the Labs?) Video: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Video: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Julie Govan 4/17/2010 This lens is ideal for taking great-looking photos at twilight, or indoors without a flash. Its 50mm focal length also makes it an excellent choice for portraits. Quick impressions from the Lab Quick impressions from the Lab Comment by Zak Billmeier Staff Writer - Creative, Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 2/3/2012 3:38:00 PM This is a fantastic portrait lens if you shoot with a Canon crop camera (60D, 7D, Rebels, etc). The 50mm focal length looks like 80mm on the small sensor. The f/1.4 maximum aperture lets you shoot in dim rooms. It's great for grabbing candids at parties and weddings where a flash may be out of the question. It starts getting sharp at f/2, and by f/2.8 it's quite sharp. Just an outstanding lens for a good price. Focus is fast and silent. All Canon's "USM" lenses are. It's a great "normal" lens on full-frame and film cameras. And it's fairly compact and lightweight. If I could only have one lens for the rest of my life, this one might be it. It's relatively small and light, it's fast (or let's call it bright), the auto-focus is sufficiently quick and it's very easy to work and learn with. I frequently recommend this lens to people who already shoot Canon and are looking to ditch their cheap kit lens or people who are looking to get into DSLR photography and want a good inexpensive lens they can hold on to for a long time.
