Polk RM87 Satellite Speaker Package
Seven Satellite Speakers: The Polk Audio RM87 home theater speaker
package adds surround-back speakers to Polk Audio's original RM85 home theater
speaker package. This 7-channel speaker package includes two identical wide
dispersion array satellites (RM8), four direct radiating satellite speakers
(RM7), and a matching center channel speaker (RM8C).
Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio
technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker
materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in
speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.
Center Channel Speaker (RM8C x 1): The RM87 home theater
speaker system features one satellite center-channel speaker. The RM87's center
channel speaker consists of two 2-1/2" dynamic balance composite cone drivers
and a 3/4" silk/polymer composite dome tweeter for full-bodied sound.
Wide Dispersion Array Front Satellites (RM8 x 2): The RM87
home theater speaker system features two front satellite speakers. The RM87's
wide dispersion array satellite speakers create a more enveloping, less
localizable surround effect because the speakers drivers are mounted on opposing
baffles for a broader and larger front-stage sound field and a more immersive
and atmospheric surround field. The speaker features two 2-1/2" dynamic balance
composite drivers mounted on different sides of the speaker's enclosure and one
3/4" silk/polymer composite dome tweeter for rich, real life imaging.
Direct Radiating Rear Satellites (RM7 x 4): The RM87 home
theater speaker system features four rear satellite speakers. The RM87's direct
radiating satellite speakers consist of one 2-1/2 dynamic balance composite cone
drivers and a 1/2" dynamic balance composite semi-dome tweeter for distortion
free and smooth sound.
Enclosure: The RM87 satellite speakers and center channel
feature an acoustic suspension, non-resonant composite enclosure with a
high-gloss black finish for great looks and natural sound. The three-sided
cabinet design minimizes the visual impact on walls and shelves while the
integrated baffle and anti-diffraction grille design allows maximum sound
dispersion with minimum diffraction for superior imaging and room-filling sound.
Speaker Terminals: The spring clip terminals located on the
rear of the direct radiating satellite speakers and center channel and on the
bottom of the array satellite speakers will accept pin connectors and bare wire.
Video Shielded: The RM87 satellite speakers and center
channel are magnetically (or video) shielded for safe placement near your TV or
computer monitor without causing picture interference.
Mounting Options: The Polk Audio RM87 home theater speaker
system offers various mounting options for each speaker.
- Mounting the Front Speakers: The RM87 wide dispersion array
satellite speakers feature a removable base which allows you to place the
speakers on a shelf or table top. The base adds approximately 0.4375" to the
height of the speaker. The array satellite speakers can also be wall mounted
using the supplied wall mount bracket which lets you rotate the speaker
horizontally.
- Mounting Center-Channel: The RM87 center channel can be placed on
a shelf or table top with the supplied mounting stand and can be angled up
or down. The center channel speaker can also be wall mounted using the
supplied wall mount bracket. The center channel's fixed wall mount bracket
does not angle or swivel.
- Mounting the Rear Speakers: The RM87 direct radiating satellite
speakers can be placed on a shelf or table top without a stand due to their
flat base. The satellite speakers can also be wall mounted using the
supplied wall mount brackets which allow the speakers to swivel
horizontally.
Note: The RM87's front and rear satellite speakers are compatible
with Polk's SA-3 floor speaker-stands (107SA3B,
sold separately).

10" Klippel Optimized Woofer: The Polk Audio PSW108 uses a
front-firing 10" composite polymer cone driver (with foam surround) for deep,
accurate response with low distortion. By using a state-of-the-art Klippel
Distortion Analyzer, Polk is able to optimize the woofer's motor structure,
voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance even at
extreme listening levels. The PSW108 utilizes a powerful motor structure for a
higher BL responses (the measure of the motive force applied to the cone) that
results in louder, deeper and punchier bass. The woofer's Compression Circuitry
limits distortion at high volume levels.
Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current
amplifier producing 50 watts RMS/100 watts dynamic power that supplies clean
power for loud bass and a wide dynamic range necessary to recreate a life-like
experience in your home.
Bass Reflex Enclosure: The PSW108 features a bass-reflex
enclosure with non-resonant MDF construction and internal bracing for deep bass
impact with superior detail and accuracy. The Polk Audio PSW108 is available in
a black wood-grain vinyl-wrapped finish. The powered subwoofer's front
firing port allows the woofer to be extremely efficient and provides more bass
impact for your home theater experience.
Controls:
The Polk Audio PSW108 offers the following rear-panel
controls.
- Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 2-way power switch on
the rear panel. When On/Auto is selected, the subwoofer turns on
automatically when an input signal is received and off 15 minutes after the
signal stops. The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and
red when the unit is off.
- Volume Control: The PSW108 has a rotary volume control
to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the
system.
- Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you
to select 0-degrees (normal) or 180-degrees (reverse). If the bass sounds
muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the
bass attack.
- Low-Pass Filter: The PSW108 offers a continuously
variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 80-160 Hz.
Connections:
The Polk Audio PSW108 offers the following rear-panel
connections.
- Line Inputs: The PSW108 has gold plated left and right
RCA line level inputs. If your receiver or processor has a single subwoofer
line output, you can connect it to either the left or right line input jack,
or use a Y-adapter and connect it to both. For receivers having subwoofer or
stereo preamp outputs that do not contain their own low-pass crossover, the
PSW108 will handle the low-pass filtering. If the receiver's subwoofer
output or "LFE" output has a built-in low-pass filter, the PSW108's low-pass
control should be turned fully clockwise (160Hz).
- Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has spring
clips for the speaker level inputs and outputs. The subwoofer's low-pass
filter sends bass frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) to the
subwoofer. The speaker level inputs and outputs are shorted together, so the
output is not crossed over. You should set you receiver's front speaker
setting to Large.
Note: The PSW108 does not have a dedicated LFE input.
Not Video Shielded: The subwoofer is not magnetically
shielded, so it is not recommended to place it next to tube TVs and video
monitors. Though LCD, DLP and Plasma televisions are not affected by magnetism
you should allow at least 18" of space between the subwoofer and any TV.
Placement: You may place the subwoofer anywhere in your
room, but it will perform best when it's on the same side of the room as your
system's front speakers. Also, placing the subwoofer near a wall or in a corner
will increase its loudness.
