Why choose a pre-matched speaker system?

Looking for speakers that'll deliver thrilling, edge-of-your-seat surround sound? Choosing a pre-matched speaker system is one way to ensure seamless home theater performance. These systems are made up of speakers that share the same tonal characteristics — that means the sound will stay consistent as it moves from speaker to speaker around your room. Most pre-matched systems come with a subwoofer — a must-have for high-impact bass.

Our take on the Mirage Nanosat® 5.1 Compact Home Theater Speaker System

by Chris Egner

Transform your movie experience

Enjoy wraparound home theater sound with the Mirage Nanosat 5.1 speaker system. Five small satellites and a subwoofer deliver full-bodied surround sound that brings your favorite movies, TV shows, music, and video games to life. You'll hear realistic imaging and lifelike ambient effects, from the rumble of an engine to the splash of individual raindrops in a thunderstorm. And the system's compact design and sleek black finish make it a great-looking addition to just about any room.

Innovative design for expansive, lifelike sound

The key to the Nanosat 5.1 system's open, true-to-life sound is Mirage's exclusive Omnipolar® technology. Each speaker disperses sound evenly in a 360° pattern, thanks to the saucer-shaped Omniguide mounted above its drivers. The result: a deeper, wider, taller soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot." You won't have to anchor yourself to one prime seat — you'll experience warm, natural audio throughout the room. The subwoofer's patented driver design allows quick, precise movement of the woofer cone for clean, distortion-free bass.

Out-of-the-way placement options

Mirage's Omnipolar design gives you plenty of placement flexibility. The small satellites fit nicely on shelves or tables, or you can mount them on the wall using the included hardware. Because of the way they radiate sound, they're more forgiving than direct-firing speakers. You can even mount the satellites up high, near the ceiling, for an unobtrusive look. And place the compact subwoofer behind the couch or under an end table to complete the system's "hideaway" installation.

For even more engaging surround sound, pick up additional Mirage Nanosat satellite speakers to complete a six- or seven-channel home theater setup.

    Powered subwoofer

    Satellite Speakers

Drivers: Each satellite houses a 2-3/4" titanium deposit polypropylene cone midrange with butyl rubber surround and a 3/4" pure titanium hybrid (PTH) dome tweeter mounted on the Omniguide.

Omnipolar Technology: By utilizing the natural room reflections this speaker design radiates sound in a 360° pattern, expanding the sweet spot to encompass virtually the entire room.

Omniguide: The patented Omniguide module utilizes two deflectors, one each for the tweeter and midrange. The module disperses sound the way the ear and brain are accustomed to receiving it; thirty percent is direct sound, the other seventy percent is reflected off walls, ceilings, floors and other surfaces for a completely immersive, 360º experience.

Enclosure: The satellites have an acoustic suspension, extruded aluminum enclosure.

Speaker Terminals: Each satellite features high-quality binding post speaker terminals for a secure and convenient connection. You will need to remove a plug that's inserted in the center of the binding post if you wish to use single banana plugs, the terminals are too far apart for dual banana plugs. Spade connectors, pin connectors, or bare wire up to 10 gauge can also be used.

Mounting: The NanoSat speaker comes with a key-hole slot wall mount bracket installed. The bracket is mounted with one screw and can position the speaker right side up or upside down. Once mounted the speaker can swivel left or right (approximately +/-40°). The bracket mounts the speaker approximately 1/4" from the wall. The 1/4" 20 threaded insert on the bottom can also be used with other brackets. If you mount the satellite speaker more than six feet off the floor, Mirage recommends turning it upside down. If you place the satellite speaker on a table or shelf, put it as close to the front edge as possible.

Video Shielded: The satellites are magnetically shielded for safe placement near your TV or computer monitor without causing picture interference.

    Powered Subwoofer

Design: The down-firing 8" sub features Mirage's patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround technology. The Elliptical Surround encompasses the cone, allowing it to move identically in both directions, reducing distortion. It also allows for a larger cone surface and greater peak to peak movement, resulting in better efficiency and bass extension. The port is front facing.

Connections: The Nano S8 has spring clip speaker level inputs and stereo RCA line-level inputs. Use the left RCA input when connecting to a single LFE output. If available, Mirage recommends using the line input with the preamp's crossover set as close to 120 Hz as possible.

Phase: The phase is reversible; 0 or 180 degrees.

Crossover: The crossover is continuously adjustable from 40 Hz to 150 Hz.

Volume: The subwoofer has a separate volume level, allowing you to adjust the subwoofer volume relative to the rest of the system.

Power: The power switch has three positions; on, off, and auto. In the auto position the sub turns on when it senses an audio signal and turns off after several minutes with no signal.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great. I'm using them as two fronts, two vertical fronts, and center. They are better than I thought they would be in these roles.
    Pros:
Good value, quality construction, multiple mount options
    Cons:
Bracket can interfere with installing wires, move to one side and it goes in fine.

Mirage Nanosat 5.1 Compact Home Theater Speaker System

Written By John, Berkshire County Mass on Thursday, February 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a very oddly shaped room that I use for my TV/entertainment. It has 20ft. high sloping ceilings and it's 18 X 23. I was unable to place the two rear speakers the same distance from the front channel speakers so I was really scared I wouldn't get a full sound. Also I had to place the front and center speakers around 14ft off the floor and the rear speakers around 8ft. off the floor. I must say with all those things the sound is unbelievable. I purchased a sub cord that was to short so I was forced to place the sub inside my component closet. Even with the door closed and the closet being over 20ft. away it still blows you out of the room. The only thing is that I think to bring the speakers from unbelievable to perfection you do need the center channel speaker because it gives a more crisp sound during conversations on the TV.
    Pros:
you can sit anywhere in the room and you get great sound.
    Cons:
no center speaker with the packege

    Great Surround Sound

Written By Great speakers need more punch, Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, January 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I waited for about a year to get my Nanostats and did a lot of research. Listened to a variety of surround sound systems. These are very clear, dynamic speakers. Overall they sound great for both surround sound and music.
    Pros:
    Small, great sounding system.
    Cons:
    Subwoofer could use more punch.

    Wall of Sound

Written By ScottM, Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think I read over 1000 reviews before I bought these NanoSats. Had to be wife friendly design, cost correct, and sweet sound. These speakers provide all of these. BUT, you will have to give them a couple of weeks to "warm up" as they sound a little flat out of the box. After 2 weeks, it is a nice pure wall of sound for surround sound movies in an enormous irregular, 20ft ceiling non-optimal listening space.
    Pros:
Size and Style (Beautiful to look at and hide), Wall of Balanced Sound from everywhere to every location. Perfect for large, multi person viewing rooms. Subwoofer is tight without booming (better than HK 12" I replaced), Makes XBOX Kenect games sound great and gives room warm sound for everyone. Worth the consideration.
    Cons:
Little light on the center channel. Default Auto-Adjustment setting from Onkyo had a flat center channel. Upped the level to +2 from std and sounds great. Not great for First Person Shooter games (CoD MW3) as there is a wall of sound and hearing where sound is coming from is tough (wife says that is what headset is for)

    IT's about time!

Written By Marc S, Claremont, nh on Monday, January 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never offered up a product review for ANYTHING in my life! I have been waiting for the right time to buy these speakers to hook up to my Onkyo TX-DS747 receiver. For sure good things come to those who wait. My room is 23x19, and I have hardwood floors and an L shaped sofa set, no area rug. THe sound reproduction is spot on. BlueRay audio is killer. Still working on getting it tweaked out 100%, but this is so much better than the other speakers I almost fell for over the last two years..."just so i could have surround..." I can wait to watch the Pats destroy the Giants in two weeks during the Superbowl!
    Pros:
The way the high, and lows wash over the room due to the omnidirectional horns, is keller!
    Cons:
The center speaker gets a bit lost as it is not pointed to me directly. I will invest in a Polk or similar center channel soon.

I was going to buy these when they were $800.00, but just purchased them at $400.00, they would have been a good buy at $800.00. the sound coming out of these speakers is crazy. they play music very well, but where they really shine is using them for movies. i was very pleasantly surprised at the big sound coming out these speakers, and with such clarity. the subwoofer barks out big bass thats sharp and clear, no rattle or vibration at all , like with junk subwoofers. If your looking to buy surround sound speakers, then these are ones you cannot pass up. Do yourself a favor and purchase them now!
    Pros:
    amazing product for its size

    Great Surround, Weak Center

Written By DanW, Staunton, VA on Thursday, September 01, 2011

The omnipolar design is really great at producing surround sound, unfortunately it seems to take away from the center channel. I failed to notice in store that this system doesn't have a special center speaker, it's just like all the rest of the satellites. Because of this, the center channel is spread out and muffled.

I swapped out the center speaker for a more traditional center channel and now I'm fairly happy with the system. Great surround, great bass, and I can actually hear dialog without cranking the volume. Do yourself a favor and listen to these speakers before buying, make sure to listen to some dialog in a movie and you'll notice it's lacking.

Overhall I am happy with the speakers. When watching movies I give it a A, but just listening to music I give them a B-. My old Polk Audio speakers that are 25 years old from my days in the military sound considerbly better when just wanting to listen to music.

Everyone loves the sound of my new system! Due to the size and layout of my room, my rear surround speakers are about 12 feet overhead and my front speakers are only about 6 feet apart in a large space. The diffused sound of the Nanosat's allow for great sounding surround and front channels. Well done! Love them!

    amazing quality/small size

Written By CharlesB, Fayetteville, NC on Saturday, January 29, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm extremely impressed with the quality of sound coming from these small speakers. I've got them teamed up with an Onkyo TX-NR708 and I could not be more satisfied. So much so that I purchased an extra Nanosat and a Definitive Technology center channel to to complete the 7.1 channel system- just icing on the cake!!!! A side note: I've always read how awesome the customer service is at Crutchfield- I whole-heartedly agree. I called Crutchfield customer service for advice torn between a Mirage or Definitive Technology center channel. They said no problem, "I'll send you both, and you decide which one you like the best". Is that awesome or what? Thanks Crutchfield; you've got a customer for life.

    Wouldn't recommend.

Written By AaronK, Cleveland Ohio on Saturday, December 25, 2010

These speakers are very small which is the reason I original purchased them. I currently have larger surround speakers and decided to step to a smaller form factor to decrease the speaker room footprint. They do fill the room with sound, have a nice "sweet spot" and the highs and low are certainly very evident. What they really lack is any type of midrange punch. I was not expecting to be thoroughly wowed since they have such a small main driver, but they have almost no midrange. If you are looking for a smaller speaker with a better overall sound I would recommend the Definitive 600 series. They are still a very small speaker and do a MUCH better job at reproducing all of the sound range for just a little more money.

    This system is amazing!!!

Written By D. P, Dixon, IL on Wednesday, November 24, 2010

I bought this system on recommendation from the Crutchfield rep. I have it paired with an Onkyo 606 receiver and it cranks. My basement room is about 24x15 and the Mirage system fills it up. I am truly impressed with this system. I replaced a box store Sony package system and there is no comparison. Great system low price! What can you say about Crutchfield's customer service that hasn't been said already. Complete instructions with wiring labels and knowledgeable staff when you have a question. Great A+++++

    After ONE Year of Ownership...........

Written By kateyandsarahsdad, SF Bay Area, CA on Friday, January 08, 2010

After a year, I still do not regret my purchase of these speakers from Crutchfield. They have performed excellently in filling up our "mini-home theater" and bring a higher level of enjoyment in everything we do, from watching HD TV and DVD's, playing Wii or just listening to music. Even in their small package, they are very efficient with no distortion; watching ALL six Star Wars episodes are, literally and figuratively, "a blast"! Our system is 100% Crutchfield, driven by an Onkyo 705 receiver and viewed on our 52" Toshiba LX177 and "free" HD-A30 DVD player; next purchase will be up- grade to Blu-Ray, can't wait!

    Great Surround Sound Speakers

Written By Chuck, Houston TX on Monday, December 28, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am setting up a new home theater room and I ordered the Nanosat and a Yamaha RX-V465 for the surround sound system. They sound great and look even cooler. The room is 14 ft x 20 ft and these speakers and sub will blow you out of there. I was worried about the smallish sub but it will rattle the walls and pulse the floors. I have bigger Klipsch's in my family room and I like these better and they cost a lot less. The reviews on Crutchfield and Cnet lead me to them and I am very pleased.

Both of my receivers (Denon and Yamaha) have a single sub output but the Mirage sub has two RCA inputs. A quick call to Crutchfield resolved this, plugged into the left input. If that is in the Mirage manual I couldn't find it and I think it could be better explained in the set up guide. Worked great after that.

    Amazing Speakers

Written By Mahdi, Brooklyn, NY on Tuesday, September 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for high quality speakers with a reasonable price tag. After lots of research, I stumbled upon these speakers. Initially, I was somewhat skeptical about these speakers (I had never heard of the name Mirage before). Nonetheless, I decided to go forward with my purchase and I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised. I purchased my speakers in October 2008 and installed them with a Sony projector and a Yamaha receiver. Ever since, I had no desire to go to any movie theater as my own setup is more than perfect for this purpose. Very highly recommended speakers.

I purchased these speakers based on the information here on Crutchfield and have not been disappointed. They really sound great and fill my living room with sound. The base module is well matched to the speakers and provides plenty of bass and feeling for a surround sound system. One additional bonus is they come ready to mount on your walls.

    Worth the money & hype

Written By Jeremy, SW Michigan on Saturday, April 04, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With electronics at some point everything gets out-dated. I was looking for a system that I would be happy with for a long time because I don't like doing things twice; especially in a few years when I could spend a little more and be content later. I was tempted with Onkyo's HT-S7100 complete system because of the price and features but wanted smaller speakers. Because this is my first real surround system I did a LOT of research before buying and my wife would tell you I'm totally geeked with it. My only worry before buying was the low-wattage on the subwoofer but for the 13x18 room it's in, it is more than enough. I added another satellite and a center channel speaker for 7.1 surround and wow....the speakers deliver excellent sound in all directions. There's very little change if the speakers are pointed elsewhere so if you have an odd setup I'm sure this would work very well. The sound these small speakers deliver are worth the price. Driven with an Onkyo TX- SR606 receiver, Panasonic Blu-ray player and Panasonic 42" Viera plasma, I'm going to be geeked for years to come.

    perfect system

Written By Chuck, Boston, MA on Sunday, March 01, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Considered Bose, but settled on this system with the Onkyo 707 receiver....on advice from Crutchfield. Great recommendation. The surround L and R speakers are mounted upside down near ceiling height, as recommended. Once I programmed the system with the microphone included with the receiver, the system sounds great. Subwoofer makes a big difference. Very satisfied with new home theater. Matched with Samsung 52 inch...in heaven.
