About the Sony Cineza VPL-HS20
When a sample of Sony's VPL-HS20 arrived in our photo studio, naturally we hooked it up to see how it looked. After a hasty setup, we watched Panic Room (a "torture-test" DVD for any non-CRT display due to the movie's numerous dark scenes). And even though the 8-ft. image was projected at an angle onto a plain white wall, the picture quality was outstanding! Several people compared it to watching a movie at the local art-house theater.
The VPL-HS20 is Sony's top Cineza projector. Comparing it side-by-side with lower-priced projectors, it's instantly obvious that the 'HS20's picture is much clearer, more detailed, and more effortlessly filmlike. And its numbers back that up: Each of its three high-resolution LCD panels has over one million pixels, not to mention impressive light output and contrast ratio. (When it comes to front-projector picture quality, contrast ratio is as important as resolution.) Also, the 'HS20's 12-bit video processing yields much finer color and grayscale gradations than the more common 10-bit processing.
The VPL-HS20's 1386 x 788-pixel resolution is slightly higher than the 720p HDTV standard, allowing the projector to do a beautiful job displaying HDTV signals. (HDTV reception requires a separate HDTV tuner.) HDTV, as well as all other signals, are converted by the excellent internal scaler so that they precisely match the projector's 788p native resolution. (We were pleasantly surprised at how good a standard DIRECTV feed looked.) We totally agree with early reviews which are calling the 'HS20 a major step forward for Sony's LCD projection technology.
With its HD-capable resolution and standard-throw lens, the 'HS20 is a good choice for medium- and larger-sized rooms. For example, to display a gorgeous 100-inch image, plan on positioning the projector roughly 13-15 feet from your screen (you can place it on a table, or ceiling-mount it with an optional bracket).
Front-projection displays always look best in a totally darkened room, but Sony includes some useful adjustments that let you boost brightness to overcome room light, or enhance contrast for a more cinema-like image. There are 3 pre-set picture modes Dynamic, Standard and Cinema that provide different balances of brightness and contrast for enjoyable viewing even with some daylight or room light. The Cinema Black Pro menu selection gives you independent controls for both the lamp and iris shutter both let you adjust the light output for a picture with higher contrast/lower brightness, or vice versa.
The 'HS20's versatile array of inputs includes composite video, S-video, and HD-compatible component video, plus two pure digital inputs: DVI and HDMI (it stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, and you'll be seeing more HDMI-equipped components throughout 2004). Sony's flexible "PJ Multi" connection and supplied adapter cable can accommodate sources with composite, S-video, or standard/HD component video output. (Click on "More Photos" above for a close-up look at the VPL-HS20's connections.) Finally, a Memory Stick® slot is included so you can quickly show JPEG digital photos & MPEG movie clips to friends and family.
For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features
Inputs and Outputs Notes
Adjustable Image Size: The Sony Cineza VPL-HS20 Video Projector can produce an image that is adjustable between 40" and 300" (measured diagonally).
LCD Projection System: The VPL-HS20 utilizes three widescreen (16:9) LCD panels and a single-lens projection system to make up the projected image. Each 0.87" TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD panel has a resolution of 1386 x 788. Note: Because the images from the three LCD panels are superimposed over each other, the projector's native resolution is 1386 x 788, a total of 1,092,168 pixels.
Micro Lens Array/Wide View Film: To achieve a superb contrast ratio (1300:1), the VPL-HS20 uses a Micro Lens Array on each of the 3 LCD panels to increase brightness. Then, a Wide View film is added to shift that brightness to deepen the black level. Finally, the optical unit is modified to reduce the amount of light leak more than usual.
Video Signal Compatibility: This unit can accept a wide variety of video signals, including 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. It can also accept computer video signals when connected via an optional Signal Interface cable. The projector can display images in NTSC, PAL, SECAM, PAL-M or PAL-N color formats. Note: The projector has no internal tuner. All video signals are displayed in 788p vertical resolution.
Auto Pixel Alignment (APA): When you input signals from a computer the Auto Pixel Alignment function automatically adjusts the input signal from a computer so the picture can be seen clearly. You can also activate the APA function via the supplied remote control.
Powered Zoom/Focus: The VPL-HS20 features a 1.3x powered zoom lens with powered focus. The zoom and focus adjustment controls are located on the side of the projector.
Lens Throwing Distances: The projector's short focal lens provides a large image even when positioned relatively close to the screen. The standard throwing distances for the projector are as follows:
Screen Size | Distance from Screen |
---|---|
40" | 4.9 to 5.9 feet |
60" | 7.5 to 9.2 feet |
80" | 10.2 to 12.1 feet |
100" | 12.8 to 15.4 feet |
120" | 15.1 to 18.4 feet |
150" | 19 to 23 feet |
180" | 23 to 27.6 feet |
200" | 25.6 to 30.8 feet |
250" | 31.8 to 38.4 feet |
300" | 38.4 to 46.3 feet |
Side Shot 2: Side Shot 2 digital vertical and horizontal keystone correction allows ultimate flexibility in projector placement. With Side Shot 2, you can place the projector off axis in order to save space in the center of the room. "V Keystone" corrects the vertical trapezoidal distortion of the picture, while "Side Shot" corrects the horizontal trapezoidal distortion.
Wide Modes: You can select various wide screen modes dependent upon the type of video signal received:
- Full: a 16:9 squeezed picture displayed normally, a 4:3 picture is enlarged horizontally to fit the screen
- Normal: a 4:3 picture is displayed in the center of the screen with vertical bars on each side
- Wide Zoom: a 4:3 picture is enlarged with the top and bottom of the picture squeezed to fit the screen
- Zoom: a 4:3 picture is enlarged vertically and horizontally in the same ratio to fit the screen
- Subtitle: the subtitle area is compressed and displayed in the lower part of the screen
- Full Through: one-to-one mapping is done on a squeezed 16:9 picture with the image centered in the screen
- Normal Through: one-to-one mapping is done on a 4:3 picture with the image centered in the screen
Picture Modes: You can select from the following picture modes directly from the remote control:
- Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions
- Dynamic: enhanced picture contrast and sharpness
- Cinema: provides soft, film-like picture
- User 1, 2, and 3: three favorite picture settings stored in memory
Picture Adjustments: In addition to the above picture modes, you can adjust the contrast, brightness, color, hue, sharpness, black level, gamma correction, and color temperature. When computer signals are input, you can adjust the picture sharpness with the RGB Enhancer.
CineMotion: This video projector uses CineMotion, Sony's Reverse 3-2 Pulldown Technology, to improve the quality of video programs, originally shot on film. CineMotion minimizes any motion artifacts, created when film-based material is converted to video, resulting in more fluid motion and more fine detail.
Dynamic Detail Enhancer (DDE): The DDE lets you select one of the following video scanning modes via the supplied remote control:
- Film: Uses CineMotion for smooth playback of film-based sources. When the signal is not film-based, "Progressive" is automatically selected. (You would normally select this option).
- Progressive: Converts an interlaced format video signal to a progressive format.
- Off: Plays a video signal in an interlaced format without converting.
Cinema Black Pro: Cinema Black Pro allows for menu-driven Iris control and Lamp control to improved contrast and brightness. You can turn the iris shutter off for high brightness and standard contrast, or turn the iris shutter on for low brightness and higher contrast.
Memory Stick Slot: This projector has a Memory Stick slot on the front panel for playing back JPEG still images and MPEG1 moving images. It is compatible with standard Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick (not all functions requiring MagicGate will work), Memory Stick Pro, and Memory Stick-ROM. Images on the Memory Stick can be viewed one-at-a-time or in a slide show format, enlarged, or rotated for desired viewing. You can also delete unwanted images, sort the pictures stored on the Memory Stick, and reformat the Memory Stick to erase all the images.
Mounting Options: The VPL-HS20 can be placed upon a table top, or installed on a ceiling using the PSS-610 Projection Suspension Support (item # 158PSS610).
Speaker: The projector has a small 1-5/16" monaural speaker on the bottom panel. It is driven by a 2-watt amplifier. Note: The only audio output through this speaker comes from the Memory Stick.
Replaceable Lamp and Air Filter: The projector uses a user-replaceable Sony LMP-H180 lamp (item # 158LMPH180), rated for up to approximately 3000 hours. When the lamp dims, causing the color balance to become strange, or when "Please replace the lamp." appears on the screen, the lamp is exhausted and should be replaced as soon as possible. In addition, the projector is equipped with a replacement air filter (PK-HS10FL). When prompted on screen, or when the filter looks dirty upon inspected, the filter should be replaced. Note: The Information Menu has a lamp timer to indicate how long the lamp has been in use.
Power Saving Mode: When activated, the projector goes into Power Saving mode if no signal is input for 10 minutes. The lamp goes out and the cooling fan continues to run. It is cancelled when a signal is input or any button is pressed. In the power saving mode, no button functions for the first 60 seconds.
Optional Conversion Lenses: You can add optional conversion lenses for short or long focus applications. The VPLL-CT10 Long Focused Conversion Lens lets you project 40" to 100" images over longer distances than the standard lens, while the VPLL-CW10 Short Focused Conversion Lens lets you project 60" to 300" images over shorter distances than the standard lens.
