Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Bose® 301® Series V Direct/Reflecting® speaker system

by Julie Govan

Love the idea of a room filled with music? Sounds like you're ready for classic Bose sound, from one of the most popular speakers ever made. The world-renowned Bose 301® Series V Direct/Reflecting® speaker system delivers the spacious, open sound Bose is famous for. How do they do it? With two high-sensitivity 2" Stereo Targeting® tweeters teamed with a long-excursion 8" woofer, and proprietary Stereo Everywhere® technology — it creates a mix of direct and reflected sound, so you don't have to worry about finding and staying in a "sweet spot." Huge numbers of people have found this the best way to enjoy stereo music — and it's great for home theater as well.

Worried about space? Don't be. Bose specializes in compact speakers that can fit unobtrusively into most rooms, and the 301® system is a prime example. The horizontal design makes it easy to place on bookshelves, too. And it's flexible — a pair of these speakers is exceptional as front left and right speakers in a small home theater setup, or as high-quality surrounds for Bose home theater in a large room.

    Mounting Options

    Driver Technology

Direct/Reflecting Speaker Technology: Direct/Reflecting speaker technology can recreate the ratio of reflected and direct sound similar to what you hear at a live concert. As a result, you experience the power, impact and emotion of a live performance in your home.

Stereo Everywhere Speaker Performance: Because many conventional speakers radiate sound directly into the room, you hear balanced stereo sound only in one small "sweet spot." Using patented Bose Direct/Reflecting speaker technology, the Direct/Reflecting speakers deliver a natural balance of reflected and direct sound. You hear balanced stereo sound almost anywhere in the room.

Long-excursion 8" Woofers: The long-excursion 8" woofers allow you to experience the remarkable effects of the lowest notes and balanced sound throughout the listening area.

Stereo Targeting Tweeters: These proprietary 2" drivers are engineered to direct mid to high frequencies to a wide, stable area between the speakers. Used in the Bose 301 Series V, they help create a sense of lifelike spaciousness and let you hear full stereo throughout the listening area.

Rear-firing Tweeters: A rear-firing tweeter sends sound from the back and side of each speaker for a balance of reflected and direct sound that is spacious and natural, like a live performance.

    Enclosure Design

Tuned Port Enclosures: The unique port geometry enables cleaner and deeper performance for lower notes, particularly at high volumes.

    Mounting Options

Wall Mounting: There is no insert for a universal wall mounting bracket, Bose recommends using only their WB-3 wall mount brackets.

Placement: These speakers were designed to be positioned horizontally and should not be placed vertically.

    Solid but not Spectacular

Written By classical&jazz, Idaho on Thursday, May 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Natural sounding lows and midrange--highs are surprisingly (for Bose) muted. Despite placement that should weaken bass response, cellos and other low tones sound grand. Jazz requires upping the loudness contour. Natural, effortless sound for classical (which is what I bought them for), but these are not startling in any way. It may be speaker placement (high on the kitchen wall in an acoustically live environment), but these speakers are merely "fine" for cooking to classical music--nothing sensational about them. BTW--they do require watts--my Yamaha 100W amp runs about 40% on the volume control for normal listening levels.
    Pros:
    lows & midrange
    Cons:
    highs, dynamics, excitement!

These are the best speakers you could ever own this is my second set my first pair are a set of series 3s that i have owned for nearly 18 years and still play strong they just dont blend with the new decor of the room anymore. These speakers like alot of power which i mean at half volume on a receiver rated to push them there awesome they will make your neighbors complain.
    Pros:
The new design is a plus
    Cons:
I have really seen a con other than low volume they like to be pushed hard

    Terrific Speakers

Written By Nick T., Aston, PA on Sunday, December 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Bose speakers are excellent. Like all Bose products they have clarity, depth and a wide stage. They are perfect for a large bedroom or small living room. They are also versatile in that they match well with other manufacturer's center channel and subwoofer speakers. The price is also right for under $300 for a pair. Their sound is also great for both TV programs and music.
    Pros:
Clarity, depth and a wide sound stage. Right size for a bedroom or small living room. Don't need much power from the Amp to operate successfully.
    Cons:
    None

    bose 301

Written By rj, virginia on Saturday, December 22, 2012

I had some 301's (2 pairs) years ago. Allways a little lean for my tastes, then I went on a merry go round of buying 4 different sets of towers, and never being 100% happy, When you spend substatntial $$ you want perfection. I never did buy Klipcsh - afraid that even thought they sounded fantastic in the showroom, the high's would end up fatiguing. This week I remembered a guy who had hooked up 301's with a Klipsch 12" sub - and I thought I had never heard a better sound. So, I have ordered a new pair of 301 series V. Currently have a cheap Yamaha sub, if need be I wiull upgrade to a 12", there are plenty of good subs out there now at good deals. So I will be shelving the Andrew Jones Pioneer towers I bought last year - sounded very good at the store, and even thought they are rated at 150W with three 5" woofers (one acts as a mid) and a dome tweeter, my god what power hogs, my 75W a channel Denon is humbled - the result being I just can't get the oomph at low/mid volumes leaving the base muddy. I know the 301's have slightly better mids/highs (actual comparison) so with just the 301's to drive, and a powered sub, I will be rocking the free world, even better that my old Cerwin Vega XLS-15's (which were very good speakers). Yes 301's have cheap clips, but has anyone stopped to think that there are not gold wires inside any mid/high priced speakers, or the back of your amp so what is the big deal? Rock, classical or jazz, 301's will work for me!
    Pros:
    value, size, weight
    Cons:
lean base but that is what my sub is for, plus with 301's on stands, the base will move freely across the room, not be blotted by a tower speaker...

Bose are good for classical music

Written By Phil, College Park, MD on Friday, November 09, 2012

The Bose 301 has a very good bass sound. The midrange and treble are not so open sounding, but they sound clean. If you like your music mellow and not etched, they are perfect for your room or living space. I have them hooked up to a Denon receiver with 80 watts and that is plenty of power. The Bose 301's best feature is the sound comes for the corner of the room and not from the speaker, due to the extra tweeter on the rear side. Hope this helps.
    Pros:
Sound stage created by 301 speakers is very large.
    Cons:
Not the most transparent sound. May need about 40 watts amp or more to drive them well.

Just got a pair in cherry on sale with free delivery. Christmas gift to myself. Don't let the elite Bose haters affect your decision, these speakers completely rock! There is a reason you can still buy them after four decades. They require strategic placement and a strong amp. For the price they are a no-brainer. Everyone should have a pair.

Bose 301 Series V for Fronts

Written By DonM, Ohio on Tuesday, October 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read almost every review of these I could find. There were a lot of negative and positive reviews. I use the 301's for the fronts on my system with the 201's as the surrounds, a center and two subs (because I can.)

The Bose definitely have their own sound to them. It is not an in your face type of sound. The sound envelopes around you. At moderate to high volumes, they are great. At low levels, it is nice having non Bose center speaker to have the sound directed right at you because it can sound a little distant. If I could go back, I would pick something different than the 201's for the surrounds to give a more direct sound. As for the 301's for fronts, they work fine for me. They sound great. I have them mounted on the Bose speaker stands, and it looks pretty cool. Overall, I am very pleased and would recommend them.

My surround set up utilized 35 year old JBL Horizon speakers as my mains but one had developed a buzz as a result of deteriorating surrounds. The Bose 301s (along with a pair of Bose 161s to handler the rear and a Sunfire subwoofer) have now replaced the Horizons yielding even better sound and requiring considerably less space. I'm more than satisfied.

I replaced a set of 30 yr old Bose floor type 501 speakers with the 301 speakers and can't believe the sound coming from those speakers. They are two-thirds the size of the big ones and just as powerful.

    Thanks Bose

    big, BIG disappointment!!!

Written By David A., Central Illinois on Tuesday, May 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    HORRIBLE

I recently purchased a set of Bose 301 speakers to attach to my vintage Pioneer stereo from the mid 70's. What a HUGE disappointment. The Bose 301 are flat and had NO depth or crispness in bass. I have returned them and purchased a pair of Infinity P363 speakers that have great full range clarity and depth, and you can FEEL the music!!! I got the Infinity speakers on sale.

I DO NOT recommend these speakers and would suggest waiting till the Infinity speakers are on sale.

I have had many friends with Bose, 301's, 601's and 901's and I finally got a set of my
    own.
Speaker placement and adequate power is the key to great sound with Bose.
I purchased a Yamaha RX-797 stereo receiver and am more than happy with the
    pairing.
I am not a fan of surround sound but appreciate great sound from my stereo and
    this set up is fantastic!!!

    let down

Written By Dave, Racine ,Wi on Saturday, January 15, 2011

These speakers were a big let down. Sound is muddy lacking clarity and crispness, especially at lower and moderate volume levels. Those springy type wire attachments on the rear are terrible as the wires easily pull free. I would not recommend these.
