Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 120

by Ralph Graves

The RS 120 wireless headphones from Sennheiser deliver spacious, well-balanced sound with solid bass response. The included radio frequency (RF) transmitter has a maximum range of 328 feet and can send its signal through walls and ceilings. That means you'll be able to enjoy your music just about anywhere in or around your home — even outside. Plus, you can add optional headsets to share the fun with family and friends. (Add-on HDR 120 headsets available separately.)

The transmitter doubles as a handy storage stand, and it also conveniently recharges the headset's "AAA" rechargeable batteries. The transmitter is wall-mountable, and its attached cables let you connect it to any stereo or home theater system with a standard stereo RCA output.

Highlights:

  • cushioned, on-the-ear design with open earcups and a padded, adjustable headband
  • 900 MHz RF (radio frequency) wireless transmission
  • selectable 3-channel transmission
  • transmitter/storage stand charges the headset's battery pack

    Features

Open-Air, Supraural On-the-ear Design: Sennheiser headphones adjust to the shape of your head, with their joints, flexible materials and extendable arms. Comfortable cushions provide optimum comfort in those places where sturdy material would rest on your head.

Transmitter/Recharger: The system comes with an RF transmitter that connects to an audio source via preamp outputs. Its transmission range is from 926 to 928 MHz. It transmits a signal to the headset, using one of three selectable transmission channels. With this powerful transmitter, your crystal clear listening range is up to 328 ft. The transmitter has an automatic On/Off function. It switches on and begins transmitting when it detects an audio signal, and will switch off if it detects no audio signal for 3 minutes. The transmitter also functions as a storage stand/charger for the headset's NiMH rechargeable battery when not in use. This unit also has overcharging protection. There is a keyhole slot on the back of this transmitter for wall mounting.

Headset: The headset features cloth ear pads for listening comfort. The left ear cup has a compartment for the user replaceable rechargeable battery, and an On/Off switch. On the right ear cup, there is a tuning control for tuning the headphones to the base, and a headset volume control. The headset also has contacts that allow the battery to be recharged when the headset is placed on the transmitter/storage stand.

Rechargeable "AAA" Batteries: Power for the headset is provided by two "AAA" rechargeable batteries that fit into a compartment on the headset (supplied). The batteries in the headset are recharged whenever the headset is placed on the transmitter/storage stand. Fully charged batteries have an operating time of about 20-25 hours. The manual recommends an initial charging of 24 hours before the batteries are first used, after that the normal charging time is approximately 18 hours. Note: Only rechargeable batteries should be used.

    Controls

    Transmitter:

    • Channel Switch: allows you to select transmission channel 1, 2 or 3
    • On/Off: Green LED indicates whether the unit is on or not
    • Charge Indicator: A red LED will illuminate when the battery in the headset is being charged

    Headset:

    • Volume Control: allows you to adjust the volume of the headset
    • Tuning Button: allows you to tune the headset for the clearest reception
    • On/Off Switch: turns the headset on or off

    Connections

    • Audio In: this cable is permanently attached to the transmitter, with stereo male RCA connectors at the other end.
    • DC Input: for use with supplied AC adapter

    I Do NOT Love Products

Written By SR S, Bloomington Springs, Tennessee on Sunday, November 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What I do not like about these headphones is: when I look down they slip off. Also, when a source signal is not present, the headphones play white noise instead of dead air. Playing the white noise is work that wears on the speakers unnecessarily. I like these headphones because they have no cord to limit my movement or to catch my arms in motion, and they produce excellent sound quality regardless of the source. Despite those two minor issues, I recommend them to anybody who wants quality sound reproduction from a well designed convenient package. Now I can listen to my music or the news anywhere I am on our twenty-four acre farm.
    Pros:
I do not love products. I love people and animals. I like these headphones because they have no cord to limit my movement or to catch my arms in motion, and they produce excellent sound quality regardless of the source. Now I can listen to my music or the news anywhere I am on our twenty-four acre farm.
    Cons:
Like I said, "I do not love products. I love people and animals." What I do not like about these headphones is: when I look down they slip off. When a source signal is not present, the headphones play white noise instead of dead air. Playing the white noise is work that wears on the speakers unnecessarily.

    EXCELLENT SOUND QUALITY

Written By MICHAEL, CHARLOTTE, N.C. on Monday, August 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, I ORDERED THE SENNHEISER RS 120 FOR MY HEARING IMPAIRED FATHER TO LISTEN TO TV. THE SOUND QUALITY IS SUPERB WITH DEEP BASS AND CRISP TREBLE. THE ONLY SLIGHT NEGATIVE IS THE FIT IS NOT AS SNUG AS IT SHOULD BE. BUT, THAT IS A VERY MINOR INCONVENIENCE CONSIDERING THE QUALITY AND THE GREAT PRICE.

I purchased these as an aid for hearing loss . They are working great in that respect. The only reason I did not give them a 5 star rating is that the fit is not a tight fit.Other than that I would highly recommend these. Very satisfied!

    Thank You!

Great product. I am suffering from sudden hearing loss. My only hobby is to watch TV and listen music. I tried 3-4 wireless headsets but not found a good one. This product is the solution for my hearing loss. I recomend this product to those who actually like music and TV.

I was looking for a headphones that let me listen to my music and videos while
I may continue working ( I run an office in my home), and tried several ones
before I get this Sennheiser RS 120, the sound quality is marvelous, the
extension of the transmitter is also very good, no interference at all, and now
I'm telling all my friends that this is the best headphones in the market for this
    price.

    Great range

Written By Dan, Lake City, FL on Thursday, February 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just what I needed to continue listening to the radio while working in the woodworking shop or working outside. Many years ago I bought a similar product from but it didn't have the range to work outside and no longer works very well inside either. The outside range of these headphones is about 300 feet!
The cons, will fall off with activity but that may just be my head.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I told my Crutchfield advisor (Tony) that we wanted some basic, wireless headphones -
descent quality, comfortable and primarily for TV programming - sports and movies. As he
has since he helped us with all the gear for our new house 3 years ago, "he nailed it."
    Thanks Tony. Thanks Crutchfield.

    Great sound, minor annoyance

Written By Richard E, MIddletown, CT on Monday, January 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones perform remarkably well. The sound quality is astonishing--
among the best I have heard from any headphones. The range is impressive; no
problems with interference or weakening signal.

As others have noted, it is very easy for these headphones to fall off your
head. Forget bending over, not gonna happen. The ear pads come off easily,
maybe too easily. They can come off accidentally.

These are minor complaints. The performance of these phones is first rate.
Hold them on your head if you need to bend over. But buy them.

    Great for the price

Written By JeffM, Atlanta,GA on Monday, January 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having read some of the other reviews I had reservations on this pair but the next price
up was a big step. I went with these. The package came quickly without any problems.
They were easy to hookup with clear instructions. We have a seven speaker sound
system in our living room but with young kids that go to bed early I wanted something to
keep the noise down on the TV. I was very impressed with the sound quality. Crisp
clear sound that even beats our sound system. I did notice that the felt covers on the
ear pieces are very smooth and any sudden movement will send them flying off your
ears. I would not attempt to wear them moving around the house cleaning or trying to
exercise. The reception is good but will at times, completely drop out, leaving a loud
buzz in your ears. I can walk outside and move around my yard, with occasional dead
spots to be found. That range is about 100 feet. Yes, the side controls are confusing.
The volume and the tuner are both thumbwheels mounted vertically, one after the other.
It's easy to forget which one is the volume. If your looking for a pair to sit and watch TV
quietly or listen to music these are great. If your needs are for a more active mobile
solution, then these probably will not fulfill the requirement.

recently purchased the 120's and very pleased. found out i had no RCA audio out on my
panny HDTV then my onkyo receiver only had an available audio out via the tape since my
video 1 & 2 had optical connections to it my blue ray player and Dolby digital sound for the
panny tv. had to use the headphone jack adapter and everything works fine. a small
complaint would be the fitting of the headphones, bend slightly forward and you have to hold
on to the headset. again, sound very good and would rec. the product

    Earphones for RS120

Written By Jack T, Yuma, Arizona on Sunday, November 28, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headphones on the new RS120 are not as good as my former model. While there
is more clarity on the sound portion the ear part seems to be much cheaper and
do not fit the ear well. Almost like some earphones on airline equipment. I was
    a little disappointed.

    serious problem

Written By RobertL, Seattle, WA on Friday, October 29, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use these headphones to listen to the TV while moving around the house. I am
pleased with the performance of the system such as sound quality, range and battery
    life.

However, if I move my head even slightly the actual headphone will jump off my head.
This seems to be a common complaint with this unit.

I use other Sennheiser wired headphones and am pleased with them.

    This product needs some redesign.

    Very satisfied

Written By Dave, Fairbanks, AK on Saturday, October 09, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very satisfactory product. 'Good range, good sound, and well designed. The recharge stand makes it easy to keep powered, and it uses standard re-chargeable AA batteries. There is a very low level, ever so slight hum in my unit, but I've tried and cannot hear it while music is playing. During long silences in TV dialogue however, it becomes apparent. Its volume is so low I do not find it distracting. I found the ear pads a little surprising. They look like over the ear headphones, but the pads are flat -- so they lie flat on the ear. This keeps your ears cool, but also allows some sound bleed that may be annoying to others in quiet rooms. If that's not a big problem, these headphones do everything well.

    good for the job

Got these so that the user could listen to TV at odd hours without distrubing other members of the household.

Sound is good. We, all three, agree that the conversation comes thru better than thru the Bose Lifestyle v20 surrond sound speakers.

All agree that the comfort level is acceptable, with one saying that there is a bit too much squeeze. All agree that if you have to bend over, as to pick something up from the floor, that they tend to fall off.

    Head Phones

Written By lchace, Alaska on Thursday, December 10, 2009

I love these head phones, the sound quality is beautifull and far superior to ones I've used in the past. They seem to stay charged overnight. The installation was easy.. I find they are a bit loose on my head but the sound makes up for it, they are not the airplane noise reduction type but ones that just sound wonderful.
