Kenwood

Why replace your factory speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Kenwood KFC-C1739ie

by Todd Cabell

You not only want great sound from your car speakers — you want them to last. Not a problem if you slip these Kenwood KFC-C1739ie speakers into your car. The pearl-mica woofer cone is tough, yet light, and built with a durable rubber surround. It'll last a long time while rocking out your tunes.

You can also treat your ears to a fuller, richer soundstage! Kenwood has adapted anti-diffraction home speaker technology and put it on their Image Enhancer series car speakers. A smooth surface around the PEI dome tweeter eliminates much of the reflected sound waves that can bounce off a flat, hard surface and interfere with the direct sound waves coming from the tweeter. The result is wider "sweet spot" dispersion, less distortion, and more accurate mid and high frequencies.

The 3-way design generates full-bodied bass from the injection-molded woofer, complemented by a PEI semi-dome midrange and PEI dome tweeter for warm, textured mids and pleasing highs.

Highlights:

  • 3-way 6-3/4" speakers (pair)
  • pearl-mica injection-molded polypropylene woofer
  • rubber surround
  • 1-3/16" PEI semi-dome midrange
  • 3/8" PEI dome tweeter
  • recommended power range: 2-40 watts RMS
  • 170 watts peak power handling
  • frequency response: 30-30,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • depth: 2-3/8"
  • warranty: 1-year

    Features

Image Enhancer: The KFC-C1739ie is equipped with Kenwood's patented Image Enhancer surrounding the midrange and tweeter. Its smooth rounded surface eliminates most of the reflected sound waves that would interfere with the direct sound waves coming from the midrange and tweeter. The end result is a better dispersion pattern, less distortion, and clear high-frequency reproduction.

Woofers: The woofer cones are silver Pearl Mica Injection-Molded Polypropylene. Uniform pearl mica crystals form an overlapping structure that adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene; the result is reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Surrounds: Each speaker has a rubber surround.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 1-3/16" PEI balanced-dome midrange. A semi-dome driver has a dome placed inside a cone. "Balanced dome" drivers are semi-dome drivers with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the driver.

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/8" PEI dome tweeter.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound very good. Fair low end considering the size nice crisp smooth high end. I am very happy with them! Installed in a 95 GMC Safari Dash
    Pros:
Good fit in dash (mounting holes align)
    Cons:
I had to make a custom foam surround to seal them better to the dash to get the best bass response.

    97 Miata Install

Written By Tim, Raleigh NC on Thursday, January 03, 2013
Installed in a 1997 Mazda Miata
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these because I wanted a direct fit. The Miata has strange limitations for a direct fit replacement: 3-hole mount, and shallow depth because of the door striker. These speakers have numerous mounting possibilities and are shallow enough to avoid contact with the door striker. Once installed, these speakers offered a huge improvement over the tired old factory speakers.
    Pros:
    Direct, OEM-like fit. Affordable.
    Cons:
    None

    Decent upgrade for the price

Written By Mick, Floral Park, NY on Sunday, December 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased two pairs of these speakers to replace the factory Panasonic speakers in my 97' Maxima GXE. These were placed in the front and rear deck. I purchased these during the Thanksgiving sale and picked them up for a fantastic price. For the money theses speakers are very good. I get fantastic mid range, good low and decent bass. My music preference ranges from classical to old school hip hop. In addition I also upgraded my receiver with a JVC Arsenal KDA735 BT. The speakers work well with the receiver. Crutchfield included the harness cable for easy installment to the existing cabling. The speakers fit into the existing bracket without a problem and the screw patterns on the speakers made the fitting very easy. As a side note gaining access to the rear speakers was not easy. I literally had to remove the rear seat completely to gain access, not fun at all.
    Pros:
    - Great overall sound - Fitted my 97'Maxima as advertised in the front and rear deck - Decent bass response

Not for 2004 Sequoia Front Doors

Written By Don, San Antonio, TX on Monday, November 19, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Toyota Sequoia
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers require a significant amount of time and effort to install in the front doors of a 2004 Sequoia. A flat ring must be fabricated to adapt the diameter and hole pattern of the speaker to the mounting holes in the door. After all that effort, the speakers sound OK. Not great, but OK. The sensitivity and frequency response of the Kenwood speakers doesn't sound like it matches the design of the Sequoia's JBL sound system very well.
    Pros:
Look and feel like good quality speakers
    Cons:
Hard to install. Don't sound very good.

    Sound great to me

Written By RobD, SE CT on Sunday, October 21, 2012
Installed in a 2009 Subaru Forester
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed a set of these in the front and rear doors of my 2009 Subaru Forester. The wiring adapter worked great, no splicing or anything, just plug and play. The adapters were a PITA, but that is another review. They fit well and in my opinion sound much, much better than the stock speakers. I'm not a huge audio expert, just know they work well for me and were worth the money, a great deal.
    Pros:
Great price Fit my application well Sound much better than stock
    Cons:
    None, that I know of.

    Sound good

Installed in a 2008 Subaru Impreza
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, don't expect speakers to produce much bass. These speakers will give a little, but turn it up to much and the sound will distort. I have these hooked up to a kenwood kdc-252u head unit and they sound great. With the extra power they get pretty loud, and everything sound nice and crisp. I also have a 12in sub to fill in the bass and together it comes together perfect. I had to drill a new hole in the door to install them, but as long as you have a little ingenuity installation goes very smooth.
    Pros:
    crisp, clear, powerful
    Cons:
    none

    Lack of bass

Written By TLCH, Houston, TX on Thursday, July 26, 2012
Installed in a 2012 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It looks pretty and the mid and high ranges sound really smooth, natural and beautiful. However, even with the large trunk as a closed enclosure, the bass is still lacking. Besides, it doesn't produce the 92dB/1mW as it claims and it doesn't seem to be able to reach 30~40Hz low range. If I turn up the volume just a little bit (~to 1 to 2W), the bass diaphragm starts to make cracking sounds according to the beats of the bass. Overall, very disappointed on this pair of Kenwood speakers which look good on the spec sheet.
    Pros:
Good looking. Sweet high and mid frequencies
    Cons:
    Lack of bass. Low efficiency.

    Kenwood KFC-C1739ie - okay

Written By Brettdm12, Bedford, IN on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Installed in a 2008 Saturn Aura
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The old saying is true...you get what you pay for. I am pleased with the speakers, but no means are they high-end. I bought them because of the 4 star review and they were inexpensive. They have good range, but the fidelity is not as good as others I have used in the past. I am overall happy with the purchase. Didn't fit good in the '08 Saturn Aura so I had to drill holes.
    Pros:
    Inexpensive, excellent range
    Cons:
    okay fidelity

    No bass

Written By Tiron, Pleasant Grove, UT on Thursday, September 01, 2011
Installed in a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers have very crisp and clear highs/mids, but there isn't any bass at all. Someone in these reviews mentioned it sounding like kicking a cardboard box -- thats exactly how it sounds. Put together with some other speakers that have decent bass (or maybe a sub), they do sound good.

I've got 2 of these in the front, with some Kicker DS65s in the back. Together they sound alright, since the Kickers have some bass, but I wish I would have just got all 4 speakers as Kicker DS65s.

Don't say no to these speakers just from the lack of bass, the mids and highs are very good sounding, and as long as you have another way to get your bass they are great speakers.

I mounted these speakers in my front doors. They are an improvement over the stock speakers, but seem pretty weak compared to the Pioneer speakers I installed in the rear deck of my car. Their sound is good and clear, just don't get the expected volume out of them. I expected more from Kenwood speakers.
