The KV-32HS500 is one of the latest models in Sony's versatile, high-value Hi-Scan™ series. This sleek, silver 32" TV is loaded with innovative technology that will enhance every second of your day-to-day viewing, from regular TV shows and VHS tapes all the way up to today's best video sources — HDTV and progressive-scan DVD.

Sony's Hi-Scan TVs are among the most flexible around when it comes to A/V connections. The KV-32HS500 offers a total of 7 A/V inputs, including two "wide-bandwidth" component video inputs. Use one of these inputs to hook up a separate HDTV tuner and treat your eyes to the breathtaking color, detail, and dimensionality of HDTV. This Sony is compatible with both 1080i and 720p HDTV signals (720p is converted to 1080i — a big advantage, as many TVs must downconvert 720p to 480p resolution). Use the other wide-bandwidth input to connect and enjoy maximum performance from a progressive-scan or standard DVD player. A DVI digital input is also included for greater compatibility with future HDTV tuners — especially tuners that receive satellite and/or cable HDTV signals.

While over 90% of U.S. households now have access to at least one digital TV signal, most of us will continue to watch regular analog material for a while, too. Sony's solution is to combine a standard 4:3 aspect ratio screen with their ingenious 16:9 Enhanced viewing mode. 16:9 Enhanced mode engages automatically when the TV senses a widescreen source — HDTV broadcasts and "anamorphic" DVDs are displayed in a 16:9 window. This approach preserves maximum picture detail on widescreen formats because all of the TV's scanning lines are concentrated in the 16:9 window and none are wasted on the non-usable portion of the screen (the black bars above and below the picture area).

Sony's Digital Reality Creation™ MultiFunction circuitry helps bridge the gap between conventional analog video and HDTV. This digital processing "upconverts" your analog video sources to 960i or 480p — images have up to four times the picture data of the original signal. When you watch DRC-enhanced video sources — especially DVD — you'll notice that horizontal scan lines simply seem to disappear!

If you own a Sony Memory Stick® digital camera, you'll be happy to hear that the KV-32HS500 has a front-panel Memory Stick slot to let you easily view your digital photos on a big, bright 32" screen!

Warranty Note

Warranty: A warranty card with incorrect warranty terms was packed with some of the first units made. This TV carries a 1 year parts warranty, with 2 years of coverage for the tube. Labor is covered for 90 days.

Features

Flat Screen: Sony's flat glass panel delivers images that are virtually distortion free and helps to eliminate screen glare.

Hi-Scan 1080i Display (HDTV Receiver Compatible): Two component video inputs allow you to connect an optional HDTV receiver or a source with component video outputs. This television is capable of receiving 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i digital TV formats.

CineMotion 3/2 Pulldown Processing: This function provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3/2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking.

16:9 Enhanced Mode (V-Compression): This set uses a special technique that gives you maximum picture quality when using anamorphic sources, such as some DVDs. When using an anamorphic source, the height of each scanning line is compressed for 33% better resolution, giving you the benefit of all 480 scanning lines. This mode can be set manually or automatically.

Digital Reality Creation Multifunction: Digital Reality Creation Multifunction allows you to enjoy a very high-resolution picture from any standard NTSC image by using digital processing to turn all NTSC images to 960i or 480p resolution, which is approximately 4 times the resolution of a standard NTSC image. This helps to give you a finer, more detailed picture and decrease the visibility of scanning lines by doubling the number of scanning lines and pixels per line.

10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter: Sony's 10-bit 3D digital comb filter analyzes picture information horizontally, vertically and over time. You will get high resolution under most picture conditions. 10-bit signal processing renders superb gray-scale gradation, resulting in superior picture detail.

ClearEdge VM Velocity Modulation Scanning: This system separates the object and its background, producing clearer edges, better picture depth and improved overall picture quality. You can select High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Dynamic Focus Circuitry: This Dynamic Focus Circuitry adjusts the picture during each scanning line for consistent corner-to-corner sharpness.

Dynamic Picture Processor: The Dynamic Picture Processor maintains image detail in the very bright and dark areas of each scene.

Twin View: Using the Multi-Image Driver, Twin View allows you to watch two programs side-by-side with the ability to zoom in on one picture and listen to the program in the selected window. You can watch pictures from two different sources (1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i) simultaneously. Note: Only the left Twin View window can display 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources.

Favorite Channel Preview: This feature allows you to preview up to 8 favorite channels without leaving the current channel.

Freeze Function: This function allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture. The TV switches to Twin View mode and displays the "frozen" picture on the right, while the current program continues on the left. This function only works in normal view mode; if you are in Twin View mode already, it will not work.

Video Mode: You can select Vivid, Standard, Movie, or Pro. The Vivid setting enhances picture contrast and sharpness. The Standard setting displays a standard picture for normal viewing environments. The Movie setting displays a finely detailed picture for low light environments. The Pro setting displays a picture with minimum enhancements.

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Sound Effects: To enhance the sound, you can select TruSurround, which adds a three-dimensional sound to stereo programs, or Simulated, which adds a surround-like effect to mono-channel programs. The sound effects can be turned off.

Parental Control: V-Chip technology allows you to block unsuitable programming for younger viewers. Blocked programs are protected by a 4-digit password.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel.

Memory Stick Playback (JPEG): This television has a front-panel Memory Stick slot to let you easily view your JPEG images. You can choose from an index of the images stored on the Memory Stick, or you can run a slideshow of those images. You can also customize the features of the slideshow by selecting the length of time that each image is displayed, toggling the display of file information, and rotating each image. Note: The TV's Memory Stick viewer is compatible with Memory Sticks up to and including 128MB. It is not compatible with Memory Sticks that exceed 128MB.

Remote Control

Flip/Joystick Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including VCRs, satellite receivers, cable boxes, DVD players, and Laserdisc players. Several controls are located under a lid that covers the top half of the remote. A joystick allows you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient. The jump, enter, volume, channel, and numeric keypad buttons glow in the dark (blue).
