Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

Our take on the Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-H200

by David Brown

Get closer without getting complicated

With a powerful 26X optical zoom lens and a DSLR-inspired grip design, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 may look like a complex camera. But it's as simple to use as the most basic point-and-shoot. And this camera's impressive zoom range blows most point-and-shoots away, for detailed close-ups that may get you thinking about a high-quality photo printer. Sony's Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization ensures your photos and videos come out clear, even when your hands can't remain totally still. That's especially important when zooming in, as long telephoto shots magnify the effect of camera shake.

A wonderful travel companion

Ever been frustrated during a great vacation because your camera can't adequately capture enough close-up detail? Bring the 'H200 along and you won't have to lament your lack of zoom anymore. Get incredibly close to historic landmarks in Europe or a wild animal on safari in Africa. Or pull back for great-looking wide-angle shots of landscapes. Can't pull back any farther? Sony's Sweep Panorama mode lets you take 360-degree panoramic shots that can seamlessly capture the entire horizon, great for city skylines or mountain vistas.

On-board editing and effects

After you've snapped your photos, touch them up and add cool effects right on board the 'H200. Beauty Effects are designed to make portraits even better, letting you enhance skin tone, remove blemishes and whiten teeth. Or for even more creative freedom, try out one of the filter effects, like Partial Color. It's a great way to highlight one object in a shot, giving you the power to turn everyday snapshots into works of art.

3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H200 digital camera has a 3.0" Clear Photo LCD display with 460,000 dots. The LCD screen allows you to compose shots, read menus, and view photos, even in bright sunlight. There is no separate viewfinder on this camera.

Recording Media: This camera has a slot for the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD and SDHC memory cards. In addition, the camera has a 55MB internal memory, which can store approximately five 20M images, 350 VGA images, or 2 minutes of VGA video.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Moving images with audio (mono) are recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a back-illuminated, 7.76mm (1/2.3") color Super HAD CCD imaging sensor with approximately 20.4-million total pixels and 20.1-million effective pixels.

Lens: The DSC-H200 features a Sony lens with an equivalent focal length of 22.3-580mm for 4:3 still images and movies, 24-633mm for 16:9 stills, and 28-748mm for 16:9 movies. The lens has a 26x optical zoom and an aperture range of F3.1 (W) to F5.9 (T). With the 2x Digital Zoom, the total zoom capability is 52x.

Optical SteadyShot: With Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, the DSC-H200 allows you to shoot movies, even while walking or running. The 2-way Active Mode corrects for both vertical and horizontal motion.

      Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-H200 allows you to choose from six image sizes: 20M: 5184 x 3888 (4:3), 15M: 5184 x 2920 (16:9), 10M: 3648 x 2736 (4:3), 5M: 2592 x 1944 (4:3), 2M: 1920 x 1080 (16:9), and VGA: 640 x 480 (4:3).

Recording Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record moving images in HD with sound. There are three Video Modes: 1280 x 720 Fine, 1280 x 720 Standard, and VGA 640 x 480. Movies are recorded at 30 frames per second.

Burst Mode: The burst mode lets you shoot multiple images when you press and hold down the shutter release. Up to 100 full resolution (20.1M) images can be recorded at a frame rate of 0.8 fps.

Sweep Panorama: The DSC-H200 can record a panoramic image by simply pressing the shutter button and sweeping the camera up to 360° full circle. The Sweep Panorama function records multiple images while panning and seamlessly stitches them together to create a stunning panoramic image. You can choose from the following Sweep Panorama modes: 360 (11520 x 1080), Wide (7152 x 1080 or 4912 x 1920), and Standard (4912 x 1080 or 3424 x 1920).

Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture. You can also select two Self-Portrait Timer modes which will capture the image 2 seconds after the face of one person or two people are detected.

Focus Modes: You can select from five auto focusing methods: Multi-point AF, Center-weighted AF, Spot AF, Tracking Focus, and Face Tracking Focus.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. You can set the AF Illuminator to Auto or Off.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Skin or Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can select the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to Slight Smile, Normal Smile or Big Smile.

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted Mode Dial, you can select from the following shooting modes:

      • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes: High Sensitivity, Soft Snap, Soft Skin, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Gourmet, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, and Pet Mode.
      • Intelligent Auto Mode (iAuto): Allows you to shoot still images with the settings
      • adjusted automatically.
      • Program Auto: Allows you to shoot with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and aperture value). You can also select various settings using the menu.
      • Manual: You can set the exposure manually. The shutter speed can be set between 1/1500 and 30 seconds. The aperture (F value) can be set between F3.1 and F9.7 (Wide Angle) or between F5.9 and F18.5 (Telephoto).
      • Sweep Panorama Mode: Create a panoramic image by holding down the shutter release button and sweeping the camera from side-to-side or up-and-down.
      • Movie Mode: Allows you to record MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 movies with mono audio.

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 12-1/3" to 22' 3-3/4" with the zoom set to wide and 5' to 11' 9-3/4" with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include: Auto, Flash On, Slow Synchro, Flash Off, and Advanced Flash.

Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

In-camera Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings. The function guide can be turned on or off as desired.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image. Using the included PMB software, you can print or save images with the date.

      View, Edit, And Print Images
