Audioengine

Our take on the Audioengine A2

by Tara W.

Compact design and clean, powerful sound

If you're like us, a lot of your music listening happens while you're sitting in front of your computer. Audioengine's A2 speakers produce rich, robust sound that breathes life into music and gaming effects without taking up a lot of room on your desktop. Place them on either side of your monitor and the speakers' soundstage will present the performance right in front of you. These little gems actually sound good enough to use in a small bedroom system, too.

Audioengine 2

Kevlar woofer

Surprising build quality

One of the main limitations of typical computer speakers is their harsh, thin sound. That's not what you'll hear from the Audioengine A2s — their custom silk tweeters deliver smooth, open highs. Advanced Kevlar woofers provide tight, punchy mids and bass. The drivers are powered by no-nonsense built-in amplifiers. All components are housed in sturdy wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish.

Back

Connects easily to your computer or iPod®

Hooking up these speakers to your computer is easy. RCA and minijack inputs let you listen to music from your computer or a portable player, like an iPod, or another audio source. The amplifiers for both speakers are built into the left speaker, so you just make a simple, secure connection between the left and right speakers using the gold-plated speaker terminals.

For a wireless connection to your iPod or MP3 player, check out AudioEngine's W2 adapter for iPod.

From the review Mighty speakers at work and at home: Audioengine A2 and A5

"My first response to the A2 speakers in action was shock (in a good way) — the speakers are small, my desk setup isn't very wide, yet the sound was unexpectedly expansive."

— Tara, Crutchfield Video Producer and A/V Writer

    Specifications

    Features

Full-Range Sound: Each of the Audioengine A2s has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter and a 2.75" Kevlar woofer. The slot-ported cabinets offer accurate bass down to 65 Hz (+/-2.0 dB). Audioengine recommends placing the speakers at least 3" from the back wall.

Amplifier: The A2s are powered by a 15-watt RMS x 2 amplifier built into the left speaker. Source components (or wireless adapters) are connected to the left speaker and standard speaker wire connects the two speakers together. With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right (4 pounds vs. 3 pounds).

Construction: The cabinets are built using 18mm MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned and tested together to be sold in matching pairs. Both speakers have high-density foam isolation pads on the bottom for placement flexibility.

Audio Inputs: The A2 has two inputs on the back of the left speaker, one 3.5mm mini-jack and a pair of RCA jacks. There is no input selector switch so both inputs are live simultaneously; if different signals are presented to both inputs, they are mixed together and both are played through the speakers.

    Controls and Connections

Left Speaker: All of the A2 system's controls and connections are on the back of the left speaker; the only terminals on the right speaker are the screw post speaker level inputs for connection to the left speaker's corresponding outputs:

    • Power/Volume: rotary knob serves as the on/off switch and controls the system's output volume
    • Power Input: proprietary input for use with the included DC power supply
    • Speaker Output: screw post output for right speaker
    • Input A: stereo RCA jacks
    • Input B: 3.5mm stereo mini-jack

    Specifications

Power Output: 15 watts RMS per speaker (30 watts peak)

    Frequency Response: 65 Hz - 22 kHz +/-2.0 dB

THD: 0.05% at all power settings

    Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 95dB

    Input Impedance: 10 kΩ unbalanced

When I took the A2s out of their box, the first thing that struck me was just how compact they were. Although the speakers had a substantial heft to them, they weren't too heavy. They were just solidly built. I only had an opportunity to make a very simple connection. I ran a cable from the headphone jack of the Lab station's desktop to the A2s and listened to some of my Pandora channels. The A2s delivered a highly detailed sound (surprisingly so, considering the connection and the source). When I had the speakers oriented properly, they created a spacious soundfield that fully enveloped me in the workspace. It's a great combination for desktop speakers -- small footprint, big sound.

    Disappointing

Written By Mike L., San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday, May 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A plus for these speakers is that they have low distortion at all reasonable volume levels. But I returned them because of an uneven frequency response that made them sound veiled, murky and at times muddy. The problem: a noticeable hump in the upper bass/lower midrange, coupled with a dip in the upper midrange/lower treble. Violins and brass missed that shine and sparkle that gives life to music. Kickdrums and other instruments at the lower end sounded muddy.

I thought this might be a result of them sitting atop my wooden desk (though I bought the speaker stands that fit them). But I tried surrounding them with sound absorbent material and it reduced the bass muddiness only a small amount. Also, with a 2.75" "woofer," the A2 os not really producing real bass, so I wondered if the internal electronics were boosting the bass too much on purpose.

I returned the Audioengine A2s, which I'm giving three stars because they have high build quality, low distortion, and would probably produce suitable sound for some other customers.
    Pros:
    Low distortion; high build quality;
    Cons:
Unfortunate humps and dips in frequency response, as noted above; inconvenient location of volume control; a bit large for desktop use unless you have a large desk.

    Excellent Little Speakers

Written By MarkusBrooklyn, Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Excellent speakers. I am not an audiophile, but their sound is wonderful for my purposes: filling a small room (400sf) with not too loud sound (apartment building). I hook them up to iPod & MacbookAir. The speakers are handsome, solid, and very well built. Price - performance comparison unparalleled.

Clean, crisp, flat (well balanced) sound. I was concerned that they were a bit too bassy, but I found my computer had a loudness EQ turned on, after flattening out all the EQ's the speakers are excellent.
    Pros:
Well built, Pure sounding, High quality
    Cons:

    Small, unassuming wonder

Written By Michael, Walnut Creek, CA on Friday, March 22, 2013

The A2s are quite the plain unassuming speaker to the eye. So it's with some disbelief when hooked up to a clean, clear music source, the fullness of sound that emanates from these little boxes feels extraordinary. They sound very close to the much, much larger A5s.

After getting a bit more used to them, there are some flaws. The bass is a bit thick and indistinct (although that it has any in significant amounts from a 2.75" woofer is amazing). The treble can feel a little harsh at times, which isn't expected from a silk dome. (Getting the optional stands and aiming them over your ear level helps a lot.) The plain looks and lack of a grille make them look like generic sound equipment, rather something with a bit more design.

But for the price and size, it's hard to dismiss the musical capability the speaker has to offer. If you're looking for booming bass to go with the shotgun blasts of a FPS, this isn't what you're looking for. But if you enjoy listening to music and need something for a cramped area, the A2's will do the job admirably. On the other hand, if your budget affords it, you can just add a sub and really fill out that low end for explosive gaming effects.
    Pros:
    - Small. - Can play pretty loud in a small space. - Actually sounds good enough to be a hi-fi(ish) speaker, and not a computer accessory. - Can set them against the wall without ill effect, as they are front ported, as opposed to rear-ported speakers.
    Cons:
    - Very plain looks. - Not strong enough to fill a medium or large sized room, if that's your thing. - Bass is a bit thick and muddy, doesn't go down to the lowest levels needed for explosive effects. (read--get a sub and set the crossover)

    Excellent speakers for music

Written By Evan K, LAs Vegas Nv on Friday, March 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading many reviews on these speakers I decided to give them a try. Although they will never be mistaken for full size speakers, they blew me away with the sound these little speakers produced. They had nice crisp highs and midrange. The lows are not boomy but definitely present. These are not speakers if you want booming bass to rattle windows. I bought them to listen to music on my laptop. I have a large collection of vinyl that i am transferring to my laptop and I wanted speakers that would please me without breaking the bank. For the price and the sound I dont think I could make a better investment.
    Pros:
    full sound, powerful but small
    Cons:
on off switch on back of speaker

Wha?? Did I just time warp to Awesomeland???

Written By Neek, Los Angeles on Friday, March 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So, I just got my A2's in the mail today, and they just blew me away! These little guys are only little in stature, as their sound is absolutely incredible. They're balanced, clean, and crisp. I Harlem Shake'd so hard I thought my girlfriend was going to leave me! In all seriousness, these speakers are such a surprise. Every review that says "they're small, but sound big" is 100% true. Of course, initial sound will be a bit harsh (if I can call it "harsh") without proper break in, however, these speakers are a true beginners audiophile must. The build quality is impeccable, the white finish is superb, and the sound is second to none. I still can't believe just how deep the tonal qualities run.... crisp highs, low tight bass response, musical detail... these are just so impressive. I can't wait to purchase the Audioengine D1 DAC to heighten the experience further.
    Pros:
Everything! Build quality, sound, ease of setup, price point, impressiveness (is that even a word?)
    Cons:
As the other reviewers said, I don't know why they didn't package the stands with the A2's, but whatever.... they're worth it.

Great but they need a little help.

Written By Big Daddy, Katy, TX on Friday, January 18, 2013

These speakers are very well build. You can tell right away when you put your hand on them; solid and heavy. Very nice highs and mids and they beg to be turned-up. However, no matter what any one says, you WILL need a sub to balance-out the sound reproduction. Once the sub is in-place you'll love them even more.
    Pros:
Construction and sound clarity unmatched for this price level. White color matches my Mac set-up.
    Cons:
No power on/off light. Wife and I get into arguments ; )

Written By kurt, bridgewater, va on Thursday, January 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Right out of the box you can tell they are built with quality. Everything, most importantly the speakers, come in nice little felt baggies to keep them from being banged up. The speakers are surprisingly heavy. I have the A2s plugged directly into my laptop on my desk about 2.5 feet from my ears. All the required cords came in the box and the setup was simple.

I like the clean and detailed sound of the A2s. Some folks might not appreciate the bass-light monitor sound, but that is how I enjoy listening to my music. Listening to Mumford & Sons right now. Robert Plant's 'Ship of Fools' is a good test for these puppies.
    Pros:
    Quality build. Detailed clean sound.
    Cons:
    None yet.

    Audioengine A2

Written By RussR, Cincinnati on Saturday, January 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the A2s and the Polk woofer PSW125 (OK, a lil much of a woofer for my bedroom/computer center). The A2s by themselves, lacked bass, but with the woofer, the system sounds great. The A2s are much, much better than the Panasonic bookshelf system I was using for audio in the high and mid range. Then added the woofer and it is just what I was looking for. They are relatively small, makes them easy to position. The bookshelf system has been banished to the basement, and yeah, my wife has come in to tell me to turn it down.
    Pros:
Great sound, great packing, great finish quality.
    Cons:
Lack bass by themselves, but this is expected from a small speaker.

Spectacular Near Field Stereo at a Bargain Price!

Written By John B, Dallas on Thursday, January 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to get some decent speakers for my desk so I did some research and narrowed the choice down to these Audioengine A2s and some competing speakers at over twice the price. Both were very well reviewed. Picked the Audioengine A2s and ordered from Crutchfield to take advantage of Crutchfield's terrific service, lifetime technical support and trustworthy problem solving if a problem ever occurs. Glad I made these choices!

I got the A2s and unpacked them, impressed with the bank vault luxury packing, soft sleeves over all components and ease of opening. Instructions were clear and it took about five minutes to set up the A2s on the custom A2 stands, attached only to power and the headphone output on my MacBook Pro. I positioned the speakers on either side of an Apple 27" monitor, toed in towards my head in my normal working position. I adjusted the volume per recommendations and started a couple of normal resolution iTunes playbacks. Wowza! Right out of the box with no break in these mighty little speakers amazed me with their terrific near field stereo, resolution and clarity. Low resolution MP3s and iTunes cuts suddenly blossomed. I ran through a variety of types of music and vocals, from MP3 to higher resolution. Everything sounded to me like I was sitting in a pro mixing studio with high end Genelecs or JBL active speakers (ten times the price of the A2s) running in a well balanced setup. I cannot imagine a better choice for a desk top or small room.
    Pros:
Crystal clear detail, rich tone, decent bass, high end sound and build quality-audiophile near field listening. And, an unbelievable bargain! Crutchfield support and shipping.
    Cons:
Not really a con, but I recommend adding the inexpensive A2 speaker stands-probably Audioengine should include them in the box. The speakers sitting on the desktop were great, but when placed on the stands they went to "amazing." The stands really do make that much difference for close listening.

    Very satisfied with these speakers

Written By sdc30161, Rome GA on Saturday, December 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, these are awesome little speakers, very detailed with an exceptional sound stage. I have them sitting on the recommended stands, attached to my new iMac (late 2012 model) via the Audioengine D1, and I am very satisfied with the sound. They look terrific sitting next to the monitor, too. I have about $3,500 worth of speakers in my living room for home theater, and while these won't produce the room-rattling sound of my two floor-standing stereo speakers, they are just perfect for my desktop. I stream my music through MOG, which has a much higher bit-rate than other streaming services and iTunes, so that may be a consideration too: always consider the source of your music.

The build quality appears exceptional. I recommend these without hesitation.
    Pros:
    Sound, price, quality
    Cons:
    I can't think of any

For anyone looking to replace their PC speakers with something with a little more punch, you can;t miss with the A2s. You can really crank up the volume with these guys, and despite their diminutive size, their sound can fill the room easily. I would recommend them without hesitation. Don't let their size fool you.

    PRODUCT WAS RETURNED

Written By LesS, Mt. Shasta,CA on Saturday, November 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product arrived very well packaged. Speakers were quality made--heavy wood with nice black finish, wiring had gold connectors, set-up was straightforward and flawless. All signs of a satisfactory purchase! These do have their own amplifiers, so I jacked them into my Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, the highs were not crisp and the overall sound was somewhat muddy. I was suprised that my original low-cost speakers surpassed them. Disappointed, I reluctantly packed them up and sent them back. I recommend previewing speakers in person before you buy, thus saving yourself the disappointment, work in repackaging and the return shipping charge!
    Pros:
Well packaged/protected Nice looking, good quality appearance Reasonable price
    Cons:
Mediocre sound quality no provision to adjust base/trebel or "tone"

    Great small speakers!

Written By Dwight, Laramie, WY on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been using a pair of Bose Companioin 2 speakers but these AudioEngine A2 speakers blow them away. I put on a nice claen live recording and it sounds like the band is actually in the room. Much better than the typical Bose sound. The only think I would like is the same as most of the other reviewers...speaker grills.

Also don't be afraid to save some money by buying the open box items...this is my second set of speakers and they don't have a scratch on them. The other set is a floor standing pair of Polk Tsi400's and they only had a very small nick on the rear of each speaker.
