Our take on the XMDirect2 Sony Car Kit

by Zak Billmeier

This XMDirect2 package includes everything you need to add XM Satellite Radio to your compatible Sony receiver: an XM Direct2 tuner and a Sony connector cable.

Use your home computer to program the Direct2 tuner for your Sony receiver — you can reprogram this adapter to work with another brand in the future. Once connected, you'll be able to change channels and see programming information on your stereo's display.

Note: A subscription to XM is also required — learn about XM's programming. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Portable reception may vary by location.

    Features

Product Overview: This package includes the Audiovox CNP2000UCA XMDirect² Tuner/Protocol Interface Adapter/antenna (item number 220CNP2UCA) and the Audiovox XMDirect² Sony CNPSON1 Connection Cable (item number 220CNPSON1). With this package, you can install XM Satellite Radio with your compatible, satellite-ready Sony car stereo receiver. In addition to the hardware, you will need a subscription to XM Satellite Radio in order to receive programming.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio programming offers over 170 digital radio channels including commercial free music channels, plus news, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming from coast to coast. XM also offers traffic and weather alerts for several major US cities (24 cities as of 6/29/10), as well as live sports broadcasts from Major League Baseball, NHL, the PGA tour, Indy car racing, and several major college conferences.

Compatibility: As the firmware is released to complete the compatibility between the XMDirect² tuner and a specific head unit, this package is added to the accessory list for the head unit; please check there to confirm compatibility.

Installation Overview: The XM Vehicle Tuner plugs directly into the Protocol Interface Adapter (PIA). The CNPSON1 cable plugs between your XM-ready radio and the PIA via a 34-pin connection. You must also mount the magnetic antenna on the roof or trunk of your vehicle, and route the cable to the tuner (inside the vehicle). Before installation, you must download the proper radio model protocol to the PIA from the XMDirect² website (firmware will not be available for all satellite ready radios, but if this package is listed as an accessory for your radio, it is compatible and the correct firmware is available on the audiovox.com/xmdirect/ website). This requires connecting your PC to the PIA via the supplied USB Programming cable and accessing the Internet.

Note: You must have Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 installed on your PC for programming the PIA. The operating system must be the 32 bit version. The software is not compatible with 64 bit versions.

Dimensions: The XMDirect² components have the following dimensions:

    • Tuner:
      • Width: 3.71"
      • Height: 0.70"
      • Depth: 2.05"
    • Magnetic Antenna:
      • Width: 1.41"
      • Length: 1.74"
      • Height: 0.53"
      • Cable Length: 22'
    • Protocol Interface Adapter (PIA):
      • Width: 2.78"
      • Height: 0.85"
      • Depth: 4.65"

    Descriptions out of date

Written By KentE, Norman, OK on Thursday, August 16, 2012

I have Win 7 64 bit and my browser is Chrome. I was able to get module programmed from my computer even though CS said I had to have win xp. You have to go to the website to get the software no matter what OS you have and a Win 7 link is available. If IE is your default browser, the module programming is a step easier but since I have chrome I just ran the usbprog file from the directory and it was pretty basic and straight forward. Hookup was easy although the install diagram was generic. For my sony radio it was just plugging the RCA cords in the bus in connectors and swapping around the main bus cord since I have a wired remote. Install was easy because I was putting it in a hot tub. I get a decent signal from the antenna with it right up next to the house on the electrical cut off.

    Clear instructions

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions are a little unclear, when navigating to the website, it should be clearer that you need to use IE and not Chrome. Aside from that...works as it is intended.

    When it works, it's great...

Written By Bruce, Memphis, TN on Sunday, June 12, 2011

The receiver is very good while it works; crystal clear reception as long as the antenna can see a satellite in the Southern sky. The main problem, however, is that the receiver runs hotter than a two-dollar pistol and, as we all know, heat is the principal enemy of any electronic device. In less than twelve months of use, it has actually operated about half that time. It usually succumbs to heat (I'm assuming) and quits operating. This may occur after one or two weeks of daily use but it has gone as long a couple of months without flaw. After a week or two of "time out", it begins operating again. This time, it quit working nearly two weeks ago and has not revived itself so I'm going to try something else. In case you're wondering if I'm "paid up", I have a 3-year subscription that cost a small fortune.

    XMDirect2 Sony Car Kit

Written By Pete, Harrisburg, PA on Thursday, June 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

system works nice with my existing headset. I didn't want to clutter up my dash with one more external device and this worked for me. programming the adapter requires a 32 bit pc and windows xp, but if thats the only problem thats not too bad. I have been using the system for a few weeks and have no complaints, it does exactly what I expected. With one phonecall to Crutchfields technicians I was able to get my system programmed and working perfectly.

Make sure your computer is 32 bit not the newer 64 bit computer used in the
last few years. Great service and Tech. support from
Chrutchfield ! You can understand them on the phone and they treat you like a
    friend. Thanks, Ted M.
