Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer TS-A6872R

by Buck Pomerantz

Pioneer uses high-tech materials in their A-Series speakers so you can have powerful, high-quality sound in your car. The smooth response and extended high frequency range of these speakers produce a superior stereo image — almost like listening to a band play live.

The TS-A6872R 6"x8" speakers feature carbon graphite polypropylene woofers reinforced with Aramid fibers, a lightweight synthetic used in bulletproof vests — they not only stand up to the stress of high-volume playback, they hit louder using less power. Butyl rubber surrounds help keep cone movement smooth and resilient, so the bass plays tight and clean.

The TS-A6872R 3-way speakers don't scrimp when it comes to the highs and mids either. Pioneer made the midrange drivers out of a special laminated polyester that's 30% lighter than conventional material, resulting in faster, more accurate reproduction of instruments and vocals. The silver film dome tweeters deliver bright, sparkling treble, letting you experience all the overtones that bring ambiance and life to your music.

Highlights:

  • 3-way 6"x8" speakers (pair)
  • Aramid fiber-reinforced carbon graphite IMPP woofer with butyl rubber surround
  • 1-1/4" laminated polyester fiber balanced dome midrange and 3/8" PET silver film dome tweeter
  • frequency response: 35-32,000 Hz
  • recommended power range: 2-40 watts RMS
  • peak power handling: 240 watts
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • top-mount depth: 2-1/2"

    Features

Woofers: Each speaker features carbon graphite IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) cone woofers interlaced with long Aramid fibers. This IMPP cone design provides the strength and rigidity powerful bass sound requires. The high-density, compressed internal architecture is resilient, stacks up against high power and transfers sound very quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound.

Surrounds: For durability and a smoother response, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Midranges: Each speaker uses a 1-1/4" balanced dome midrange with laminated polyester fiber which is 30% lighter than conventional materials. That difference in weight means faster and more accurate response, for exceptionally clean, detailed music. Each midrange also features a magnetic fluid and a neodymium magnet.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/8" PET silver film dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs.

Custom Fit: The 6x8" speaker's frame features two additional mounting holes which allows the speaker to fit in 5x7" openings of select Ford and Mazda vehicles.

Great Sound For A Great Price

Written By Mike S, Rome, NY on Friday, October 15, 2010
Installed in a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

I replaced the premium ford speakers in my Mountaineer (Mach system) and the difference is like night and day. The quality and power of the sound is excellent. The bass is fine. I did not buy a sub-woofer and did not expect one. The mids and highs are a huge improvement over the factory system and will only improve with an aftermarket head unit. I highly recommend these as a budget level speaker. Check the sensitivity and frequency figures and the difference in price from the lowest price budget pairs is well worth the little extra cost. Installation was quick and easy at under 20 minutes for all four.

    Good Speakers

Written By Extremely_Picky, NJ on Friday, October 01, 2010

I am somewhat intelligent about stereos and I was not looking for bass dropping
sound. I am older and want all around sound, not the thumping, trunk rattling
of some people. The vehicle is a 1996 Mazda B4000 Cab Plus. With that in mind:

Great highs and mids. Bass response is lacking with the factory stereo. The
factory speakers deliver better bass than these do, but these speakers don't
distort when the music gets loud. Right now I am running with treble turned to
like 3 out of 10 and bass is at 8 out of 10 and it sounds decent.

Aftermarket head unit is going in next week. MIght pick up a small powered bass
    tube in the future.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love these speakers. The highs and mids are amazing and the lows are ok for
listening to music. I need a bit more kick for my 97 f250 so I am currently
researching and pondering on purchasing a vehicle specifit enclosure with the
sub and amp built in so I can enjoy my music the way the artist wants me to. I
changed all 4 stock 6x8s and paired it with a Sony 640UI. If your looking for an
amazing speaker to replace your stock "Premium" speakers...get these.

    Excellent for a 6X8

Written By Anonymous, McCall, ID on Tuesday, May 25, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these for a 2006 F150 Super Cab and I am very impressed with the sound. They fit great without any modifications and the instructions provided by Crutchfield were excellent as always. The speakers are currently powered by the stock head unit (probably a bit underpowered), but even so there is a huge difference in the sound compared to the stock speakers. Bass is acceptable, if not more than I expected, and the midrange and tweeter definitely add much more detail than the stockers ever provided. For the price you really can't go wrong with these Pioneers.

Hits throught its ranges perfect and a great improvement over stock. They are not the best speakers out there and dont perform like some of the ones on the market in a good way. these speakers are great if you are on a budget.

    Best Bang for your Buck!

Written By Matt, Wayne, MI on Wednesday, March 04, 2009

I own a 1997 Taurus Gl sedan. I am very happy with these speakers. They have much more depth and clarity than stock speakers. This should come as no surprise. So, If your thinking about improving your stock sound and don't want to wrap up a lot of money in your sound system, get these speakers!
Crutchfield is the place to go! I look forward to buying 1" Tweeters from crutchfield! somehow paper cones just don't get it.

Very good Speakers! - Wrong polarity connectors from Crutchfield

Written By alan, Trenton, Michigan on Sunday, November 30, 2008
Installed in a 2007 Ford Edge

I have installed the Pioneer TS-A6872R speakers in the front of both my 2007 Edge with factory stereo and 2008 F150 with JVC HD combo CD receiver and am pleased with the results. They have a tighter Bass and crisper highs compaired to the paper cone w/wizzer cone factory speakers which had muddy bass and muted highs.

I am a big fan of Crutchfield due to excellent customer service, however I must complain about the connectors (912071048) supplied with these speakers - they fit perfectly, but the polarity is wrong. I proved this out with a flashlite battery and some jumper wires. Hook up the battery to the speaker by itself ( not hooked to car) making the last connection a Quick momentary connection and watch the cone movement - if the cone moves forward (away from magnet) the speaker polarity is the same as hooked to the battery. If it moves rearward (towards the magnet) the polarity is reversed. I tested the factory speaker to determine positive on the connector then checked the supplied harness and the new speaker and found the polarity reversed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product was shipped promptly. Installation was an ease on my 97 ford f-150 extended cab except for the drivers side rear that took more time than the other 3 altogether. The instructions were great and pictures mean alot with me. The speakers sound much better than the stock with the new Kenwood stereo. I would like to see more bass but I expect a sub and an amp would be needed for this. I would recommend these for anyone looking to upgrade from the factory speakers.

I bought these to replace the originals in my 05 Mazda B Series/Ford
Ranger regular cab. They fit perfect in front and rear. I'm running them
with my stock Pioneer head unit. They sound awesome. They're louder
and the bass, midrange, and treble is awesome. I highly recommend these
to anyone who drives a vehicle that accepts 6X8s.

    quality all around

Written By Jonathan, Houston, Tx on Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Installed in a 2003 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for some quality, affordable speakers to replace the stock ones in my mustang. After a little research it came down to these and the set of 3-ways from kenwood. One customer review directly compared the two gave this one the edge so i went with it, and I'm very satisfied with them. Now I'm not an audio buff at all, but from what I can tell these speakers pump out some great sound. Highs are clear and the mids come out strong. The bass is good in my opinion, maybe not for drawn out lows in a rap song or anything. If you want that I guess you need a component sub. But bass drum beats in songs make my side mirrors shake, so that's good enough for me. The materials throughout look to be durable and excellent quality so no worries about them lasting. WORD OF WARNING for anyone who hasn't bought speakers before: give them at least a week to break in before judging the sound. I plugged them in and foolishly expected peak performance out of the box, which just isn't possible. Give them time to break in and sound their best and I'm willing to bet you'll love them!

And as always, top notch customer support from Crutchfield! You can always shave off dollars by buying from another website, but no one takes care of you like the Crutchfield staff.

I purchased these speakers to replace the stock rear door speakers in my 2005 f-150. They fit perfectly! The wire harness that Crutchfield provided was great and the installation instructions were spot on. I am very happy with the sound. Too bad Ford doesn't provide these kind of speakers stock. Crutchfield-you get a great rating from me!

I coupled these with a the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB head unit and could not be happier with the result. They didn't quite fit perfectly in my Tacoma, but with the provided hardware was able to set them in snugly enough and the have preformed beautifully since.

They have responded well when I've pushed them hard on every genre of music one could imagine playing. The base hits well, and the mid and hi ranges are clear and powerful. definately a good buy.
