Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Polk db525

by Todd Cabell

Polk has designed and built db Series speakers to deliver the powerful, precise sound of premium speakers, but without the big price tag! And check out the cutting-edge looks — textured woofer cones and MOMO-inspired, wheel-style grilles add the right touch if you're customizing your ride.

The db525 5-1/4" speaker combines a polymer/mica composite woofer with a rubber surround to keep the midbass crisp and clean. You'll enjoy the smooth high-frequency reproduction of the liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite 3/4" dome tweeter. And, instead of the high-pass filter found in most car speakers, a built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Don't limit yourself to only using these speakers in your car — they've passed tough environmental testing that certifies them for marine use as well.

Highlights:

  • polymer/mica composite woofer with butyl rubber surround
  • liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite 3/4" dome tweeter
  • certified for marine use

    Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Marine Certified: Polk db Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

I replaced the rear factory speakers in my '99 Cougar. What a huge improvement. With the help of the installation instructions the install was relatively painless. I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone looking to upgrade their factory equipment.

THESE SPEAKER ARE A NICE UPGRADE FROM THE FACTORY SPEAKERS ON MY 1997 WRANGLER. JUST DON'T EXPECT THEM TO BLOW YOU AWAY. PRETTY AVERAGE SPEAKER. IF I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN I WOULD SPEND A LITTLE MORE AND GET SOMETHING A LITTLE NICER.

bang for the buck the best there is

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory speakers in my '01 Cherokee weren't cutting it so I installed these in the rear roof and a pair of component infinity reference speakers in the front doors...I can barely tell the difference in sound, I CAN tell you that the infinities cost more than twice as much! Don't expect 5-1/4 inch speakers to blow you away with bass but for their size these are great and the mids and highs are crystal clear and don't fade out even during the heaviest of bass, even though I'm only feeding them 17 watts rms. These speakers are more than a great bang-for the buck deal, they out do much more expensive speakers in every way except power handling, and theirs wont be pushed except by an external amp these are a great way to bring your car's sound to life!

I bought these to replace factory speakers in the roll bar of my 99 wrangler. really simple switch. the sound is great. i don't know much about the technical aspect of speakers, but i love the sound. they are clear, bright, loud. and for being small i think the bass that comes out of them is good. i'm adding a sub, to help, but all and all the country and rock sound really great. even with the top down.

    Great Speakers

Written By Jake, Bellevue, Ohio on Wednesday, May 02, 2007

I have these speakers in the front doors of of my 2000 Buick Century paired with db690s in the rear deck. They sound great and are way better than the stocks. Although they are only getting about 20 watts RMS each from my Sony deck so they get a little distorted when you crank them with the bass up. If you have bigger speakers in your system than I would suggest getting some 300hz bass blockers for these. They're only 10 bucks and you can order them right here at Crutchfield. This was an excellent purchase and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants crisp, clear, high quality sound at high volumes. Oh and thanks Crutchfield. Your service and customer support is second to nobody.

Just installed these in my 2005 Sebring Convertible and they are a big improvement over the stock 6x9's in the front doors. They are paired with db 690's in the rear. Although I do think they all need a little more power so I think I will add an amp later. They can get a little distorted when the volume is all the way up but I blame that on the stock receiver and no amp.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to put in the sound bar and dash of my 03 Jeep Wrangler and I am very pleased.

I am currently running them off of my Pioneer HU and they sound good. The highs are very crisp and clear.

I would suggest using an external these speakers as this will really bring them to life. This is what I'm planning on doing soon.

Keep in mind that with a 5 1/4" speaker there will be almost no bass. If you want bass in your system then a subwoofer is a must with these speakers. I have an 8" Rockford stage 2 in a custom enclosure inside of my center console and the system sounds great.

And of course, crutchfield once again has exceeded my expectations with my HU and speaker purchase.

I installed these in the doors of my Cherokee, and couldn't be happier. They are crisp and clear. If you're looking for base, look for subs. If these don't sound perfect to you, check the settings on your H/U. If installed and setup properly, these speakers will put out the perfect sounds for what they're designed for.

These are a great value, and I highly recommend them.

I bought these speakers to replace my factory speakers in an '03 Ford Explorer along with an Alpine CDE-9852 I bought and they sound great. They wont give you bass but that should be obvious since they're 5 1/4" They scream when I crank the stereo up and the 10" Infinity subs top it all off with a heck of a nice soundin system. Thanks crutchfield for the easy installation

I replaced the factory non infinity system in my 1999 Intrepid with the Sony deck and no external amp. These speakers matched up with the pok db690 6x9 are truly wonderfull.. The only problem I had withe the 5 1/4 is the mounting adapter for the front doors.
This was a pain to say the least. I had to modify the adapters and change to larger screws to get the secure, but once completed all was well

One of the components I used for my system

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked at the specs. for these 5 ¼" speakers along with many other 5 ¼" speakers and for the money these will give you the best sound. The speakers are fantastic. The midrange delivered rounds out and fills the vocals, the tweeters hit high crisp notes cleanly. I installed two of these in the front door location and used the XTC 5 ¼" speaker baffles to deaden any rattle from the speaker to the door and to protect the speaker cone from anything I may get into the door from the road. I also made custom sub enclosures, (2 JBL GTO 8" subspowered by a dual channel 1200 watt amp.), with these in the boxes as well. I used bass blockers on all four and sent the low frequency to the subs only. With these mounted in the boxes in the back which I made at a 17 degree angle, (face), so the sound would fire up to the listener rather than into the back of the seat, and two mounted in the front doors, the system sounds incredible! I love the way these gems deliver clean mid's and great clear high's.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speaker Thoughts: Very good speaker for the money. They are *very* bright and will compliment a car system with a subwoofer very well.

If you don't have a sub or bigger speaker (6.5", etc) to carry the lows you might be disappointed on some songs. I predominantly listen to rock so it's not a huge issue for me. But on some of the rap songs I do listen to, the bass overpowers this little speaker and I have to turn up built in high range filter on my Pioneer head unit. But you have to understand...5.25" speakers aren't meant to deliver the low's.

Still good speakers overall, hence the good marks.

Installation Thoughts: I went back w/ factory sizes so there wasn't any difficulties with install. Unscrew old stuff, plug in FREE Crutchfield speaker wiring harness and screw in the new. Done in 5 minutes! I might note the nifty little speaker harness that allows you a simple plug & play vs. old school splicing just makes it that much more simple. While not required, it is a nice extra that didn't cost me any extra!

Final Thoughts: Good speakers, easy install, fast shipment and good pricing. I'd buy them again from Crutchfield w/o any hesitation.

These Polk's are AWESOME! They are great at high volume. I put them in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee and they don't distort or crack at all with my head unit which is a Sony Xplod CDX-F7710. They give so much clarity and the mids and highs are unbelievable the bass is lacking but I've got 2 12" Infinity Subwoofer's and they pick up the bass. These are highly recommended by me!

These speakers are wonderful upgrade from the stock speakers. I put these in the dash of my 98 caravan. The install was a little bit tricky. the drivers side was very shollow. But after 30 mintues i figured it out. The speakers sound great. The highs are very crisp and clean. The mids and lows are also very good sounding. they dont get distorted. but make sure your not powering them off of your factory radio or they wont get the power they need

I recently upgraded the stereo system in my 1999 Cherokee by replacing 4 speakers with Polk db525's paired with a Pioneer DEH-P6800MP head unit.

The db525's sound great... plenty of claity and volume without an add-on amplifier.

The wire connectors provided by Crutchfield made installation a breeze.

    Very pleased with my purchase.

I have never really done any stereo upgrading before, all my old cars had a decent system. In my Olds, I knew if i was going to turn my radio on i really needed to get some new speakers, these really did the trick, awesome MID and High with just enough bass to keep the sound balanced. I got these with the Pioneer DEH-2800MP cd player which really works so well togeather.

    Great Speakers

Written By Mineh, Cleveland, OH on Monday, December 26, 2005
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these along with a pair of 6.5" polks to replace the speakers in my 1998 Corolla. Install was a little more of a pain than I would have liked since the factory speakers in the front were riveted in. Crutchfield provided me with good directions for removal however, and the brackets they provided worked perfectly. I am glad I purchased these here.

The sound quality was a little underwhelming at first, until I replaced the stock head unit. I replaced it with a JVC DV5100 which provided 22 watt RMS. Since the switch, I have only good things to say about these speakers. They don't sound brassy like my old alpine 6x9s. The sound quality is very rich. It also gets plenty loud without a problem. If anyone is hesitating about these speakers, I would say go ahead. These are by far the best speakers Ive had yet. A little bit more pricey, but worth the cost.
