Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Our take on the Yamaha RX-V663

by Dave Bar

The RX-V663 features time-tested Yamaha construction to deliver thrilling home theater audio performance. You get seven channels of clean, high-current amplification and exclusive Yamaha Cinema DSP processing that can transform all your movies, music, and TV shows into powerful, room-filling surround sound. It also includes built-in decoding for Dolby® True HD and DTS-HD® Master Audio — two up and coming high-resolution surround sound formats available with some Blu-ray Disc™ players and movie titles.

Quick, accurate auto setup
Yamaha's sophisticated YPAO auto-calibration system enables easy, precise home theater setup. Plug in the included microphone and place it in your favorite seat. The receiver analyzes the size, volume, relative distance, and frequency response of every speaker in your home theater system, adjusting the settings for each one individually. In minutes, your receiver configures itself for optimum performance with your specific speakers and their placement within the room.

Versatile video switching with analog-to-HDMI conversion
This receiver's HDMI connections let you switch easily between two digital video sources — like a high-def satellite or cable box and a Blu-ray player — while maintaining pristine picture quality for both. And analog-to-HDMI conversion means you can send all of your older, non-digital video sources to your TV through a single HDMI cable. Select components using the receiver's remote — you'll never have to switch inputs on your TV again.

Preset "SCENE" buttons for easy operation
Yamaha's special SCENE modes let you get to your entertainment sources in a hurry. Just press one of the four preset SCENE buttons on the receiver's front panel or remote, and the 'V663 automatically switches to the correct input setting and sound mode for DVD viewing, disc listening, TV viewing, or radio listening. Plus, you can individually reprogram each button for different activities of your choice, such as playing video games, iPod listening with an optional docking station, and more.

    Features

Next Generation Surround Sound: The RX-V663 offers the latest high definition surround sound formats supported by Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD players:

    • Dolby TrueHD: a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs; the reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit
    • Dolby Digital Plus: developed as an extension to Dolby Digital, the coding technology supports 7.1 discrete channels
    • DTS-HD Master Audio: an advanced lossless technology that delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, offering a high-definition home theater experience
    • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: high resolution audio, virtually indistinguishable from the original audio track

Cinema DSP Digital: Yamaha's proprietary Cinema DSP (Digital Soundfield Processing) Digital technology goes beyond Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. Cinema DSP Digital draws on a huge memory of real-world data from actual venues, especially for the music programs, and input from movie sound technicians to deliver a more realistic surround experience.

SCENE: The RX-V663 features four Scene buttons on the front panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. These buttons are initially set to default settings for DVD viewing, Disc listening, TV viewing, and Radio listening. You can also program a Scene button for iPod listening, XM listening, TV sports viewing, or Action Game playing. There are 18 Scene templates that can be used for various situations.

Silent Cinema: The Silent Cinema mode allows private listening of multi-channel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary stereo headphones. Silent Cinema activates automatically whenever you connect headphones while surround sound is engaged.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Compressed formats such as MP3, WMA, and AAC generally remove sounds that are indistinguishable to typical human hearing, resulting in a loss of fidelity. The Compressed Music Enhancer, two-channel and 7-channel, regenerates the missing harmonics in compression artifacts and compensates for the loss of low- and high-frequencies to provide improved performance.

YPAO Technology: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer), which helps you automatically achieve highly accurate sound adjustments. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each speaker.
    • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the timing of each channel.
    • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate low-frequency crossover for each channel.
    • Parametric EQ: Adjusts the frequency and the parametric equalizer level of each channel to reduce coloration across the channels and create a cohesive soundfield. This is particularly important if you use different brands and sizes of speakers, or if you have a room with unique sonic characteristics.
    • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.

Digital ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

192kHz/24-bit DAC: The RX-V663 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.

Video Up-conversion: Video up-conversion allows analog video signals from composite, S-video, and component video sources to be output as digital video signals through the HDMI output. In addition, component video signals can be output as S-video or composite signals, S-video signals can be output as composite or component video signals, and composite video signals can be output as S-video or component video signals. You cannot convert HDMI input signals to any other type of signal.

On-screen Display: The receiver features on-screen display menus that allow you to optimize this unit to suit your individual audiovisual system.

Presence Speakers: The receiver has a pair of speaker terminals that can be used for Presence speakers, Front B speakers, or for driving a pair of speakers in Zone 2. The presence speakers supplement the sound from the front speakers with extra ambient effects produced by Cinema DSP. These effects include sounds that the filmmakers intended to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambience. The Presence speakers should be placed at the front of the room 1-3 feet outside the front speakers and at least 6 feet off the floor.

Note: You must select in the menu whether the speaker terminals are being used for Presence, Front B, or Zone 2.

Dual Zone Capability: The RX-V663 allows you to play two different sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs and a pair of speaker terminals for Zone 2. Only sources that are connected via analog audio inputs can be output to Zone 2. You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied remote control when an infrared signal repeater system is used. If you're using the Zone 2 preamp outputs, a separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system are required.

iPod Universal Dock: With the optional YDS-10 or YDS-11 iPod Universal Dock (item numbers 022YDS10/022YDS11) you can connect your iPod digital music player to the RX-V663, and control audio/video playback using the remote control. Most fourth generation and later iPods (Click Wheel) are compatible.

Bluetooth: An optional YBA-10 Bluetooth adapter can be connected to the dock port on the RX-V663 and you can stream audio wirelessly from your compatible Bluetooth device.

XM Satellite Ready: You can listen to XM Satellite Radio by connecting the XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Kit (package item number 700XMTUNPK) to the RX-V663's proprietary plug. A 50' extension cable is available if the Home Kit's 25' cable is not long enough. XM Satellite Radio offers over 150 commercial-free channels of music, news, sports, comedy, talk, and entertainment to choose from--all in digital quality. During XM playback, you can display the channel number and name, category, artist name, and song title on the front panel.

Note: A subscription is required in order to receive XM Satellite Radio.

Neural Surround: Neural Surround has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcasts of XM HD Surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. XM HD provides content with six discrete channels of digital full fidelity audio. Only a handful of XM channels are offering programming in XM HD Surround.

SIRIUS Satellite Ready: You can listen to SIRIUS Satellite Radio by connecting the Sirius Connect tuner (item number 607SCH1) to the RX-V663's proprietary plug. SIRIUS Satellite Radio offers over 130 channels of music, news, sports, talk, and entertainment to choose from--all in digital quality. Input and Output Notes

Assignable Inputs: You can assign the HDMI, component video and digital inputs to the component being used with that input. Select component video, HDMI, coaxial input, and optical input for the audio/video inputs; coaxial input and optical input for the audio inputs (CD and MD/CD-R).

1080p HDMI Inputs/Output: There are two 1.3a HDMI inputs and one output on the rear panel. These HDMI jacks can be used for 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel), Direct Stream Digital (SACD), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, etc) digital audio formats as well as digital video signals up to 1080p resolution (including 1080/24p).

HDTV-compatible Component Video: The RX-V663 offers three component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These inputs and outputs have a frequency response of 5 Hz to 100 MHz and will pass High Definition video sources up to 1080p. Note: 1080p component video signals cannot be converted to HDMI; they are only output via component video.

Front Panel Input: The front panel's Video Aux input features analog stereo RCA and optical digital inputs, plus composite and S-video video inputs.

Multi-channel Analog Input: This unit has a discrete 5.1-channel analog input for connecting DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players or an external decoder. You can convert the input to 7.1-channels, and use an assigned pair of input jacks along with the 5.1-channel input to connect the 7.1-channel device.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post speaker terminals for the front A, front B/Zone 2/presence, center, surround, and surround back channels. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors.

Bi-Amp Speaker Connections: This receiver allows you to reassign amplifier channels to make bi-amp connections. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a restricted frequency range, making its job easier.

Preamp Outputs: The RX-V663 offers preamp outputs for all channels: front L/R, center, surround L/R, surround back L/R, subwoofer 1 and 2, and zone 2 L/R for connecting to separate amplifiers if desired.

    Yamaha-ppy

Written By Tim, La Plata, MD on Thursday, April 23, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first venture into a home theater system. I am pleased with the purchase. I like Sony (have a Sony Bravia 46" LCD HDTV, and Sony BluRay), but went with the Yamaha based on availability, reviews, and needs. Using Polk speaker system, with 5 (Center + 4 and Sub) rather than 7. I have a larger-than-average living room, and the sound I get is excellent: clean, full, without rumble or tin. I used MonsterWire, which may be overkill, and banana connectors, which look clean and the sound is solid. I am running DirecTV HD, so the channels look and sound great. I agree that 2 HDMI inputs limits options for upgrade, but it works for me. The manual is a bit cryptic, but I'm getting there. Crutchfield service, as always, dependable and thorough.

    Competent AV Receiver

Written By Mike, Arizona on Saturday, April 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver provides a competent and functional receiver for my home theater while providing clean and transparent power for my music listening. The straight signal mode allows the source processing to come through clearly and unhindered but if you like Yamaha processing modes this unit has a wide variety to suit most audio tastes.
The only con for some people may be the small amount of HDMI inputs (2 in 1 out) and somewhat limited video processing options for lower resolution inputs.
If those items are not high priorities in making your selection this receiver would be a fine choice.

    Works well enough but...

Written By Keith, Warrensburg, NY on Tuesday, April 14, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver works well enough. One issue though - I had the cable box connected to the receiver via HDMI and then from the receiver to the TV via HDMI. Frequently (maybe 70 to 80% of the time) when changing channels, the TV screen would go black for up to five seconds. I can't figure it out. I've since connected the HD DVR straight to the TV via HDMI and used an digital audio cable to connect the HD DVR to the receiver. I don't have the problem any more but that defeats the whole purpose of buying this receiver (for the HDMI inputs and outputs).

    Exceptional Value for Money

Written By Steve, York, PA on Monday, March 23, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very impressed by the sound quality of the receiver and the video upconversion to HDMI. Listening to audio from my PC's optical output with the receiver in Pure Direct mode was stunning to say the least.

I had some difficulty setting it up because the binding posts do not handle soldered wire very well (the ends of my speaker wire were soldered to prevent them from fraying). As soon as I cut off the solder and stripped them to the recommended 1cm everything was fine. The included microphone and automated speaker detection & leveling works really well at learning the configuration of your speakers in the room. Mine is paired with the Bose Acoustimass 10 system, and I was impressed with the automatic mixing of the surround & surround back channels since my speakers are only 5.1.

My only beef with Yamaha is the steep price increase to get the additional inputs on the RX-V863. An extra $400 for another HDMI in and two optical ins is a little steep. It would be nice to have those inputs at this price level.

Overall, if you're looking for a good receiver for your home theater system at a very aggressive price point, the RX-V663 is a very good value and performs exceptionally well.

    Diehard Bows to Yamaha

Written By Peter K, Northeastern, NC on Saturday, March 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver's performance is quite remarkable for a mid-priced system. Video up conversion makes older video discs seem near HD quality. Mated to Polk speakers (RM6880), the reproduction of all types of music is very impressive. Played Jane Monheit at the Rainbow Room (older DVD) and the results were wow. Played Rolling Stones Shine A Light (Blu-ray disc) and the results were double wow! As a purist, I went with raw speaker wires directly to the receiver binding posts which are well-designed and handled bare wire easily. Receiver works well right out of the box and gets better as you learn more about the various settings/options. Pros: Too many to list since I'm still learning about the many features available. Cons: No turntable direct input - need pre-amp. No direct LAN connection for video and audio downloads. Highly recommend this receiver to first time buyers as well as those looking for a replacement system. Great product by Yamaha.

    Yamaha RX-V663

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great receiver at a reasonable price. I wish it had more digital I/Os. It is easy to set up although the documentation is not always very clear. The audio is very good and the video is also very good. I am using it on regular analog TV so I can't judge it's picture on HD.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a Yamaha RX V5?? that I bought in 1997. I researched quite a bit for the best one to buy for what I wanted to spend and I kept coming back to the the RX V663. I did look at Onkyo's and Denon's but pound for pound this one has the best features and sound for the price.

I also thought that the Crutchfield service was pretty good and would buy from them again.

    Amazing Sound!

We had a SONY for 12 years and thought it was good but now we are amazed by all the sound we were missing! This receiver is worth every penny. It was a breeze to install and it meshed with our HD components perfectly. This, plus the BOSE Accoutimass speakers have us in audiophile heaven!

    Almost a 5 Star

Written By pctek, San Mateo, CA on Monday, February 09, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While the V663 is a great sounding reciever, it does lack in a couple of areas. 1) Privide more optical inputs. 2 is not enough. (If you use the IPOD Dock as I do, you cant count the front panel Optical) 2) Make the user manual look like the V663 front panel. The "Surround Sound indicators on the V663 look nothing like whats in the manual. 3) Bring audio output to 100W. 4) Make the front A/V jacks an indipendent source and not shared with the IPOD dock. 5) Include HD Radio as many other manufactures do. 6) Add at least one more HDMI input.

The unit does run cooler than my previous Sony 920. The auto speaker calibration works well. I am pleased with this receiver.

    The Besy Ever Christmas Present

WOW ... I know nothing about a Yamaha Receiver (what does it do and why is it required???) but reviewers rated this product the very best and that is what I wanted to give my husband for Christmas. I called my nephew and he said go to Crutchfield for the best customer service. On Christmas morning my husband was speechless. 'Nuff said!

    Great receiver!

Written By Jim, Portland, OR on Wednesday, January 21, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha RX-V663 is a great receiver. I've had it for a month now. It replaced a mid/low-grade SONY that I had owned for several years. I use it to drive a 5.1 surround-sound speaker set with a 12" sub-woofer. Very crisp sound reproduction and significantly better than the SONY. The Yamaha drives sounds that I had not ever heard before from my music library. It's sort of unsettling to listen to music and hear unexpected sounds and then realize they come from the music and not from outside.

Set up will not be complicated for folks familar with sound system cabling. Also, Yamaha provides an Optimizer Microphone for customers to plug into the receiver front, which automatically balances out the speaker volumes of the sound system. This is VERY NICE and worked well to balance out the rear speakers.

The receiver integrates many AV components very well, and is well worth the investment. I do ALSO recommend to any/all that an extra investment be made into an integrated remote control to glue together all of the pieces. Get a good one (Logitec Harmony One) because this is a solid example of one getting what one pays for.

    Yamaha RX-V663

Written By Katrel, North Jersey, NJ on Tuesday, January 20, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The best features with this receiver are clean sound, 6 S-Video inputs (most modern receivers don't offer S-Video), dual subwoofer output for 5.2 or 7.2 configuration, HDMI v.1.3a Switching and internal decoding of the latest lossless codecs Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital + and DTS-HD MA.

Audio fidelity is clean and powerful and you will appreciate the room shaking sound coming from this receiver. You'd have to spend significantly more money for more power but this receiver packs plenty. I've connected presence speakers up front in addition to a full 7.1 speaker set up and I also utilize the different Yamaha's built in DSP's (17) based on source audio or desired sound fields.

Thru Optical audio out I listen to music and videogames from my PS2 using the Dolby Prologic IIx Music and Game decoders which give a great home theatre feel to my room. When watching DVDs I use Prologic IIx Movie or occasionally use the Cinema DSP Action, Adventure or Sci-Fi depending on the movie and mood. The beauty of this model is the ability to delve deeper and tweak the parameters of each sound field program if you prefer, I use the defaults but I may use this option as I get more familiar with the 663.

The menu screen for this receiver offers lots of options though i wish the interface were full color instead of grayscale.

The ease of use, ability to rename and assign inputs make this one great receiver for the price.

    Back to the best

Written By Mike, SW Florida on Thursday, January 08, 2009

Had a Yamaha ProLogic receiver years ago (it was the best then), this
replaces a failed Onkyo, and a Sony lacking the features for Blu-Ray.
Should have just grabbed this from Crutchfield in the first place when I was
going Blu, and the outlet price didn't hurt.

Just buy it, you will not find better surround for under $1000 than this.

    Better Than I Thought

Written By Mark, Lincoln, NE on Saturday, November 22, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a Sony STR-DE698, the thing that drew me to the Yamaha RX-V663 was that it was said that the dialogue in movies was heard much more clearly and pronounced. This is very true, I had troubles with hearing clearly the voices with the Sony, but with the Yamaha they are truly clearer and I have no trouble hearing what's said, and that goes for TV viewing and CD's. The overall sound quality is just so smooth and clear compared to the Sony. The bass seamlessly intertwines with the other sounds without over powering and giving just the right amount of punch. With all the different settings for getting the right sound for you, you can't go wrong with this receiver. I did the auto-calibration for speakers and it seemed to me that it was set perfect for movies on a DVD player, but I had to do a little tweaking with the sound levels for the speakers so that it was just right all around for DVD, CD, TV and Radio without changing the speaker settings for each scene. That would be one improvement for this receiver, if you could save each speaker setting for each scene, one for DVD, CD, TV and Radio. All in all this receiver is future safe for now with the advanced decoding for audio, I would highly recommend this receiver if you are thinking of upgrading, the smoothness will delight you. I have teamed this up with a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray and the Movies and CD's have been beyond what I was hoping for, I hear things that I missed before.

    Yamaha RX-V663

Written By Joe, Rockland, Pa on Wednesday, November 12, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We're having fun now!! Our Yamaha has been up and running for about a week. Installation was a little rough mostly because of my lack of technical ability. The people in support at Crutchfield were not only very helpful but patient as well. We have this Yamaha matched with Nanosat 5.1 speakers and I think it's a great combination so far. I am a little intimidated over the complexities and options of the 663. But I guess that's the state of art now. We'll be fine-tuning the overall system for months. We bought these components through Buzz and I made it clear that we weren't after window-rattling power. We wanted clarity and a full sound. I think we got exactly what we were after! Many thanks!

    WOW! Yamaha RX-V663

Written By Fred, Folsom CA on Thursday, October 09, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with this receiver. Lot's of great features and sound is
fantastic! Very clear and warm sound. Using Polk RM speakers / sub (that I
bought from Crutchfield about 8 years ago) which give excellent imaging.

As others have mentioned, the manual leaves a bit to be desired. After
initial hook up, I had a panic attack cause I wasn't getting sound out of all
my speakers - then ran the YPAO calibration and all was OK. This is a
fantastic feature that pointed out the phase of some of my speakers was
reversed. Fixed, re-ran, and sounds even better!

The HDMI connections are a sight to behold - OMG!!! What a difference on
my HDTV - NIGHT AND DAY!!!

The remote doesn't work with my cable box so I had to get a Harmony
    multifunction remote.

Overall - I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

    A Good Choice

Written By Loren, Iowa on Sunday, September 14, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the Yamaha for a few weeks now and it has proven itself to be a good performer. I considered an Onkyo, but I needed pre outs which the Onkyo I was considering did not offer. And I was concerned about how warm they run while the Yamaha has not had this problem. It did take some time to get the settings to ones liking, but this can be part of the fun. Tweaking it and then sitting back to enjoy your new toy. Only having 2 HDMI inputs may be a concern for some, but for me, not. It is a solid unit and is recommended.

Written By jeff, Conover,Nc on Wednesday, August 27, 2008

I have had this receiver for a month and i really like it so far. I have a onkyo before and i put it in my bedroom, and the yamaha has a more detailed sound to me.

Some of the setting can be confusing at first and the manual has you flipping back and forth. bad manual. Setting up the radio preset was a hard challange that took me about 30 minutes to figure out shouldnt be that hard but it is) i'm using it only as a 2 channel receiver so i cant give any details of the video. It runs cooler than my onkyo.

Crutchfield was a pleasure doing business with you again as always! enjoy!
