Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 60.7cs

by Ken Nail

Infinity Kappa component speaker systems boast an innovative low-impedance, high-efficiency design that'll provide plenty of clean, powerful output in your system.

The 60.7cs 6-1/2" component speaker system features a woven-glass-fiber woofer cone that delivers ultra-clean response. The Plus One+ cone design offers a larger surface area than other 6-1/2" speakers, for improved bass output and efficiency. Lightweight neodymium magnets drive the woofers with authority while saving weight — an important consideration if you're trying to shave pounds off your performance car.

The dome tweeter produces detailed, lifelike sound that's easy on the ears. Infinity's Starfish™ mounting bracket allows the system's tweeters to be installed in most factory tweeter locations. If you don't have factory tweeters, the ingenious I-mount system helps you custom install the tweeters in almost any location.

The computer-optimized outboard crossover promotes a smooth transition between the woofer and tweeter for uniform response from the lows through the highs. You'll hear every note in perfect balance.

Important Note: These Infinity speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Highlights:

  • component speaker system includes woofers, tweeters, and crossovers
  • 2-ohm impedance for extra power (compatible with all factory or aftermarket car stereos)

    Woofers

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone significantly larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven-Glass-Fiber Woofer Cones: The woven-glass-fiber woofer material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Motor Structure: The new Kappas use a Neodymium motor structure with an integrated heat sink. This design provides a massive amount of energy while minimizing mounting depth and magnet diameter. The integrated heat sink cools the motor structure efficiently, thus increasing power handling while reducing distortion.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The hi-roll rubber surrounds allow the woofers a greater range of movement, resulting in longer X-max and more bass output.

Intermount III: Infinity's Intermount III mounting system allows the 60.7cs woofers to fit a variety of 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications. Two adapter rings are included for each speaker.

    Tweeters

Tweeter Material: Each tweeter features a 1" edge-driven MMD (Metal Matrix Diaphragm) dome, resulting in increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the woofer.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

    • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
      • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
      • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
    • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
      • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
      • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

    Crossovers

Crossovers: Kappa component speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. Each crossover features an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz high-pass network for the tweeter and an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz low-pass network for the woofer.

Selectable Tweeter Output Level: Each crossover allows you to select the tweeter output level according to system requirements and personal preference. The tweeter level may be set to "+3 dB" or "0 dB."

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are gold-plated screw terminals that will accept up to 10 gauge wire.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

    Crossover Dimensions: W=4.897", H=1.328", D=2.725"

    Infinity 60.7cs

Written By GSC, Milwaukee, WI on Saturday, November 15, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are very solid and very clean. I'm powering them with a Kenwood Excelon 70w 4 channel amp in my 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and they really put out excellent sound quality. The cross-overs have an attenuation switch for the tweeters with selections for either 0db or +3db attenuation. I love clear distinct highs, but the +3 setting is just a bit much -- ear shredding at higher volumes. A solid speaker choice. I'd love to hear them in a side by side comparison with the new 60.9's and find out if the increased frequency range of the 60.9's makes a difference.

These were a HUGE improvement over stock speakers. Teamed'em up with a RF amp and I really enjoy experiencing my music collection again. Installation was not as straightforward as I would have liked, but result was worth it. Kappas and Boston Acoustic are best sounding speakers in my opinion.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just put these component speakers in the back seat area instead of my other after-factory speakers, and it was good, but not as great as expected. Granted, I do not have an amp or anything, but I am not sure if I would be anymore impressed. I turned my radio all the way up, and it distorted 3/4 of the way through, and was not loud-loud for me. If I didn't pay a radio installation service to install it for me, I would've kept the ones I had, or paid extra for something a little better then these. If you are looking for an after-factory speaker, it may be okay, but make sure you pay extra to get the most out of them.

    Very nice speakers

Written By Blake, Bismarck, ND on Monday, May 26, 2008

I just put these speakers into the front door of my 3000GT. They sound great, even though i don't have an amp hooked up to them yet. I noticed that the woofers have some problems with producing lower tones, but front speakers shouldn't have to be good at that, so it doesn't turn me away from them. Ease of installation was perfect, it took me about 5 hours to take my door panels off, clean them and re-finesh them, drill the holes for the tweeters and run the wires and put them in. I recommend these speakers to anyone, they can add a better dimension of sound to your car that the factory speakers cannot.

    Sweet speakers; don't starve 'em!

Written By James, Fredericksburg, VA on Saturday, February 02, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 2006 TOY Tacoma DBL Cab front doors. I orginally had them powered by my new Pioneer headunit. They were easily an improvement from the stock speakers, but when you turned up the volume they began to show signs of hunger.
I purchased a profile 2-channel amp, pushing 100 rms @ 2 Ohms... now the speakers are very clear and very loud!
when powered with an amp, these kappas will leave you smiling.
    Enjoy!

    Great Speaker

Written By Jason, Marysville, WA on Sunday, January 27, 2008

After a few months of research, I settled on this speaker, had it installed and must say am glad I did. Highs are crisp and clear, mids are solid. Bass is minimal but to be expected. Not bad for your average listener but if you're looking for anything substantial, you'll need a subwoofer (I paired it up with one in the same family: Infinity Kappa 10" and it sounds great!) Also, make sure you power these. I've got them powered by a Kicker ZX350.4 (90w @ 2 ohm) which I would say would be bare min. These speakers are rated at this power.
There is one thing I have to note. I wasn't going to dock marks for it but it's something you should know before you install. On the crossover, there happens to be the tweeter switch (0db to +3db). When installed make sure you either have it installed on the outside of you door panel, or have the installer set it before hand to your liking BEFORE it's installed behind the panel. I had it installed behind the door panel and had to remove it to set it to my liking which wasn't difficult but you've got to be careful not to accidentially break your panel while trying to take it off. Just a step you potentially could avoid. Other than that, these are great speakers and I'm very happy with them. They can get VERY loud but stay clear and crisp! Don't forget the Dynamat with these.

Installed in a 2007 Pontiac Vibe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these speakers in my 2007 Pontiac Vibe, with the tweeters in a factory door sail. After installing them, I was amazed at the difference with my stock speakers. These speakers have such a great depth of sound, I noticed things in the mid-range and mid-bass that I didn't even hear in my old speakers before. They don't even distort when I drive them to 3/4 Max volume on my head unit. The bass is not too much, and has just a nice punch to it to define the low end of the sound. I recommed these to anyone who wants a mid-priced speaker that will sound great! Crutchfield also was very helpful in providing insall instructions and all the great I needed to put them in myself.

I have a 2006 Toyota Rav4 Sport and had Polk db650's in the front and rear which sounded pretty good... I have a Kappa 12" Sub (which I'm very happy with) and I wanted try some components upfront... So, I tried these Kappas... Wow, I'm glad I did!!! These speakers are fantastic with great crystal clear highs and sweet mids... They sound so good that I added the Kappa 63.7i's in the rear as well... Infinity has won me over... Good bye Polk!

    Infinity Kappa 60.7cs

Written By Kyle, Portland, ME / Manchester, NH on Saturday, December 15, 2007

Bought the Infinity Reference 475a to go along with the Kappa 60.7cs and Kappa 693.7 (90 Watts to each) and I am very Impressed with the clarity and volume of the speakers and the job the amp is doing powering them. I listen to my music pretty loud and I really only use about 50% of the power this system is capable of putting out, maybe 60% if I'm feeling brave. The Highs sound awesome, the mids sound awesome and the lows are reasonable as well (if you crave bass you'll need a woofer regardless) but the lows do sound good. I really cant say anything bad about this, they seemed to have broken in recently (after about a week) and they sound better than ever, I would definitely recommend these speakers to anyone willing to pay for quality...

Installed in my 06 Dodge Ram front doors. Could not have asked for more. Once I ran the wires and hooked them up it was amazing the sound that came from such a small package. I am pushing about 100 rms and my ears ring minutes after I have left the vehicle.

    Brilliant

Written By Ted, Winona, MN on Sunday, September 23, 2007

I installed these in my front doors. The sound quality upgrade is amazing. I'm giving them 70W RMS and I can not stay in the car past half volume. They do not distort at all. After reading some reviews here I expected brighter sound, which is OK with me, but they are not too bright at all. I actually turned up my highs a bit with my EQ. Unbelievable clarity. Enough bass for me at every level.
Do not hesitate to buy these!

I upgraded from the the capable Ref 6020cs speakers, but these blow their doors off. I was glad that I spent the extra money. I have them paired with kappa 62.7i and a kappa 10" 104.7i sub, and they rock! Must use an amp I am pushing 90 watts to each speaker. I couldn't be more happy.

    Great Components

Written By Mongus, Omaha, NE on Friday, June 15, 2007

We bought these 2 years ago and placed them in my wifes 1999 Accord Coupe, they are now in my 2002 Subaru Forester. I have an Alpine 9811 Head Unit and a Kenwood Excelon 4ch amp pushing 120W to them.

I enjoy the metal tweeters but as others have noted some may find them too bright. This can be adjusted from the head unit or the amp though so they can be tuned to your liking. I listen to a lot of jazz (all types except cool jazz) and classical and the tweeters make the high hat work and horns sound very real. Some have noted a lack of mid-bass with the woofers but I think they sound fine (I also listen to Rock/Pop) and again this can be compensated with the head unit.

Fitment was perfect in the Accord but even the shallow magnets were were a problem in the Forester doors. The window just barely clipped them. I used a dremel routing tool to cut out a spacer from 1/4 inch MDF and that worked perfectly.

Do not run these off a Head Unit as they require plenty of power. Your Head Unit puts out 25W at most and these speakers will want every bit of their 90W RMS power rating to sound the best.

The speakers perform awesome, lots of power and clarity. I just think i got a bad one.

I made the mistake of not buying these speakers from crutchfield. There was a problem one of the 6.5" woofers magnets. I'm now going to buy everything through crutchfield, the extra price is well worth the customer support they provide.

Amazing mids and highs, well worth the money!

Written By thelegacy, Minnesota, US on Friday, June 08, 2007

These speakers made a night and day difference in my car. After trying Pioneer components the Infinity Kappa's have really brought my soundstage alive! With their amazing sensitivity and power handling they work a treat even from the most dismal headunit power. The are now being fed 142W RMS a piece from my JBL 75.4 amp (and theyre rated at 90W) even with gains at normal. Buying a very good head unit is a must for these speakers. Changing from Alpine 9847r to Pioneer's Premier DEH-P80MP really made these come alive. They get soo loud! Doddle to install, very lightweight and have a narrow mounting depth. Buy them!!!

    They Sparkle

Written By jake, Spokane WA on Monday, December 11, 2006

these speakers will blow your mind. I have them in my 94 F150 tweeter mounting was just a hole saw away. They'er conected up to the infinit 7541 4 channel amp and paird with some kappa 5x7's they just rumble the truck. I do recomend that you have either a good head unit with at laest a 7 band equalizer preferably a 13 because if you dont turn down the highs a little they absolutely scream and it will not be good for your ears. but these speaker are perfect for he picky listener wou wants to hear every single nuance of thier music.

    Infinity Kappa 60.7cs

Written By MikeV, Hayward, CA on Tuesday, October 03, 2006

I just installed these yesterday so this is just my initial impression.
I usually buy Polk speakers only but they seem to have problems with tweeters going out for some reason, so I thought I would try Infinity this time in my Honda Civic.
I am running these Kappa seperates off a Profile AP400 amp along with two Kappa 12" DVC subs off a Profile AP1000 amp and the sound is great! The tweeters can be a little shrill as they are crystal-clear but you can adjust for that with your head unit settings. I am using the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP CD Receiver and it has a lot of sound settings so I am only beginning to hear the differences.
So far I am very happy with them and highly recommend them.

These speakers are the bomb, then clean, clear, high octane sound, how did infinity do it. Thats setting your crossovers and equalizers right. Makes me want to upgrade to the perfect components. I like the bright sound that the tweeters give, prefered over silk. Mids and bass are solid. Im sticking with components sys that have metal in the tweeters, thats my opinion everyone has there own taste. Im running my early wornout alpine 9831 head unit. I have 6x9 3 way Kappas in the rear, powered by the 4 channel reference amp. The sounds make your eyes raise up and ears bleedout. Ran a few of my friends out the car. Overall these are your best buy period
