Sonos

Our take on the Sonos SUB

by Tara W.

Deep, powerful bass. One-button setup.

Sonos subwoofer

Sonos has done it again. Their SUB makes it even easier to get incredibly compelling sound in any room of your home. Two force-canceling woofers are positioned face to face in this unusually and stylishly shaped cabinet for loud, crystal-clear bass and minimal vibration. And a variety of adjustments can be performed to tailor the sound to your specific room using the Sonos controller app. Whether you're in a great room with high ceilings or a small office or den, the Sonos SUB is ready to bring new bass impact and greater dynamics to your listening experience.

Exceptionally easy to set up

Just like the rest of the Sonos family, the Sonos SUB is a breeze to get up and running. Place the SUB in the room where you want more bass from your PLAY:3, PLAY:5, or CONNECT:AMP and press a button. The SUB connects to other Sonos players using Sonos' proprietary wireless network, so you can place it anywhere in your room where it'll have access to power. It doesn't need to be connected to your speakers or Sonos player.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, Android™ phone, or computer to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Pandora® Internet radio, SIRIUSXM, Spotify®, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SIRIUS Internet Radio. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Pandora® and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

MOG

MOG — over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Sonos® network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 players in your Sonos system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

From the review The Sonos Sub: big-bass sound, one-button setup

"Before adding the Sub, I thought my Sonos system sounded great. But adding the Sub gave a whole new dimension to every song I play. In the acoustic tracks, the bottom end really filled out and I heard more depth in bass guitar and drum notes. In songs with a deeper, more-pounding bass track, the Sub really took off."

    Features

Overview: The Sonos Sub is a wireless powered subwoofer, designed to add deep bass (down to 25 Hz) to your Sonos listening experience. The Sub works with any amplified Sonos player, including the Play:3, Play:5, Connect:Amp (ZonePlayer ZP120), or ZP100. It does not work with un-amplified Sonos players, such as the Connect (ZP90) or the ZP80.

Design: The Sonos Sub features two force-canceling speakers (3" x 6" race-track shaped drivers) positioned face-to-face to provide deep, rich bass with no resonance from the cabinet. The speakers are powered by two Class-D digital amplifiers, perfectly tuned to match the speakers. The speakers are mounted into a unique cabinet that features an acoustic slot and dual acoustic ports that encircle the enclosure to enhance the Sub's performance.

Placement: Out of the box, the Sonos Sub is designed to stand upright on the integrated rubber feet. You can also lay the sub horizontally on its side, if desired. Four self-adhesive felt feet are provided, if you choose to mount the Sub on its side. A guide for placing the felt feet on the Sub is included.

Set-up: The Sonus Sub can be associated with any amplified Sonos player. The Sub is compatible with Sonos software versions 3.8 and later. Once you have positioned the Sub in the room, you can press the Join button on the side of the Sub in order for the system to recognize it. The system automatically adjusts the audio settings to perfectly balance the Sub and the paired Sonos component for best performance. All of the filter settings, active equalization, and time alignment are done digitally through a state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processor (DSP). During setup, you will be prompted, through the Sonos Controller software, to set the subwoofer's level and phase. In some cases, you will be prompted to select the size of the stereo speakers (compact, bookshelf/ceiling, or floor) connected to the amplified player. If you move the Sub to another room, you can easily reconfigure the audio and room association settings.

Connections: The Sub has only two connections, both located on the bottom of the enclosure: the power cord connection, and a single Ethernet port (RJ-45) for connecting the Sub to a wired home network.

    Great Addition

Written By Doug, Maryland on Saturday, February 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added the Sonos Sub in a room where I have two Play:5s paired together. While I have always enjoyed my paired Play:5s, adding the Sub really seemed to improve the performance and sound from the Play:5s. I am truly enjoying the Sonos listening experience but now even more with the Sub.
    Pros:
    Improved listening experience Easy set-up
    Cons:
    Expensive

    Sonos Bridge, Dock, Sub

Written By Rob1070, Mount Vernon, IL on Sunday, October 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system is easy to set up and use. Ziggy in Customer Service did great. Expensive, but the neighbors down the street get to enjoy my play list. Halloween in the neighborhood will not be the same this year! I matched this with a pair of Definitive AW6500. Loud, Clear and Easy to set up and use. Worth the $$$!
    Pros:
Loud and Clear. Easy to use and set up.
    Cons:
Wireless Sub is expensive, a pain to lug in and out of the house onto the deck. Have to reconnect every time to the unit. But once hooked up? WOW!!!!!
