Our take on the XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Waterproof foam baffles from XTC fit behind speakers to keep them clean and dry. They compress easily to fit the installation, and form a mounting seal that can reduce panel vibration. Use these speaker baffles along with a Dynamat kit when you install your new speakers, and you'll enjoy improved sound and performance.

These baffles will protect your speakers. In many applications we recommend that you cut a hole in the bottom of the baffle, or remove the entire bottom of the baffle, to maintain good bass response while still protecting your speaker from dirt and water damage. Call one of our Advisors if you have questions — they'll be happy to share their expertise with you.

Highlights:

    XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Written By Ben Christian, Memphis, TN on Monday, March 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I figured that since I have subs the baffle might act like a barrier and reduce the
ill affect the sound waves from the subs might have on the bass response of
my 6x9s. Well, I figured since they were new it just might be an issues of break
in. After a couple weeks I could actually notice a slight difference, but still the
bass was practically nonexistent. Nearly everyone that bought the Alpine SPR-
69C speakers seemed pleased, so I doubt it's the speaker. I have yet to
remove the baffle to see if it actually is the problem, so I can't truly blame the
baffles as of now. Nonetheless, it's sad that my Alpine SPR-12C speakers up
front have just as much bass as my amped 6x9s.

consider the 3 inch deep ones instead of 5 inch

Written By Curt, Spokane. WA on Friday, March 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 5 inch ones were too deep and got squished amongst the trunk lid hard
ware. The end result for me on this install was marginal. I did previously put
some in my father in law's car and I heard a cleaner better sound for sure. All
though he doesn't like much bass and really likes clean highs.

    good idea.but needs work

Written By Joseb, Rochelle IL on Friday, November 05, 2010

I put these under my 2 new 6x9 alpines to keep them dry. at first i didnt like them
because they distorted the base way to much. then i decided to put dynamat on the
inside and out to keep them solid and stop the wierd distortion they added. The
speakers hit crazy hard for most bass with this but couldnt hit the lows without ratttling
my rear deck. so i then cut and made a makeshift port for both of them. They act like
boxes for subs now and the volume difference is insane. The lows flow smoothly and the
mid bass hits make my chest thump. all in all its a good product after a little bit of fine
    tuning

    XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Written By Joe, Port Orchard, Wa on Wednesday, August 18, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed them on my Infinity Kappa 6X9's 693.9i's, which are hanging from the rear deck on the car, extending into the trunk, was hoping for some protection from the subs, they did do that, but they did cut the sound level on the 6X9's and rattled against against the speaker frames. Removed them. They are a good idea, but the rattle against the speaker frames was just too annoying.

    XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Written By Weigel21, Kansas on Thursday, January 21, 2010

I figured they'ed reduce the vibration of the speakers mounted to the rear deck and given I have subs the baffle might act like a barrier and reduce the ill affect the sound waves from the subs might have on the bass response of my 6x9s. I had the Alpines amped at 56RMS to each speaker, so I figured they'd have no problems whatsoever hitting down to a mere 80Hz. Boy was I wrong. The speakers seemed to not hit anything below 200hz. I could set the HPF on my deck at 80Hz or 200Hz without hearing the slightest difference. In fact, I would even wager they weren't hitting anything below 500Hz. Well, I figured since they were new it just might be an issues of break in. After a couple weeks I could actually notice a slight difference between 80Hz and 200Hz, but still the bass was practically nonexistent. I ended up cutting out a 1"x3" slot in the baffle and it actually helped a little, but not nearly as much as I'd hoped. My 15 year old factory 6x9s were easily able to hit lower, they just didn't sound as clear at any frequency. Even now they don't seem to have any bass and they are surely fully broken in by now. Nearly everyone that bought the Alpine SPS-69C2 speakers seemed pleased, so I doubt it's the speaker. I have yet to remove the baffle to see if it actually is the problem, so I can't truly blame the baffles as of now. Nonetheless, it's sad that my Alpine SPS-46C2 speakers up front (being feed 26RMS from my CDA-9833) have just as much bass as my amped 6x9s.

    XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Written By Mike, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, April 10, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not sure I like these yet. I purchased these for my 6x9 Aplines that are mounted in a partition wall of my Ford Econoline van. The backs of the speakers were open to the cargo area and I felt I needed some speaker protection as well as something to help with the accoustics. I did a complete system install and I have not tried it without them. I think these baffles may be killing some of my sound.

    2004 Toyota Corolla

Written By George, Southern, Il. on Wednesday, June 06, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They did make the bass tighter, more clear, thus it distorting easier at lower volume. Does as advertised well thus the 5 star rating. Found I can turn it up a bit more without having them & when it does begin to distort, it's more "spread out", less noticable. Seems to be easier on the speaker without, just in case. Crutchfield refunded me without needing to return due to shipping costs. Great customer service!

    XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

Written By Matt, Tallahassee, FL on Sunday, April 22, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most people have said, these things killed my bass; they didn't even tighten up the midrange in my case. I took them out and the sound quality improved incredibly. Aside from the sound issues, the baffles kept getting pulled down by the speaker wires and eventually half the baffle would end up hanging down into my trunk. Unless you have a extremely moisture prone area for your speakers, these are not worth the money. Even if you need to moisture protection, I would recommend finding a better location for the speakers, or spending a few extra dollars and get some new weatherstripping, as these don't seal out moisture completly anyways.

    Get the bigger size!

Written By Ben, Great Falls, MT on Friday, July 07, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Here's my reasoning for rating this slim version so low: The smaller size (with less space between the back of the speaker and back of the baffle) can have some unwanted effects depending on the speaker enclosed and its size. In my case, the cone movement of the speaker would cause the baffle to suck in and rattle against the back of the speaker. I ended up having to cut out the back of the baffle to fix this problem. On a positive note, the general theory behind these seems sound enough. They are of decent quality and would provide adequate protection for speakers (especially those mounted in doors). The seal around the speaker is also pretty good considering the vacuum that was created in my case (resulting in the unfortunate rattle). I've seen first hand what can happen to an unprotected speaker in a car door. For my sound setup in a previous car, one of the door speakers eventually sounded distorted so I pulled off the door panel to take a look. Sure enough, corrosion had built up where the wire connected to the speaker. After a thorough cleaning, the speaker sounded fine again. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend the regular size baffle and not this slim version to avoid the issues I've had, especially for deeper speakers.

    80hz Killers

Written By Rotz, Bridgeport, CT on Wednesday, March 29, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good quality product. If you're using your 6x9s as your main source of low end bass then i would stay away from these. They kill pretty much everything below 70-75hz. However if you're looking for something to tighten up your 80-150hz range then these are the way to go.

    Bad Idea!

Written By Jose Jr., NJ on Thursday, March 09, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These 6x9 baffles are good if you only want to extend the life of your speaker by a little. It protects it from moisture and anything else at the back of the speaker. But thats about it. I thought these baffles would improve bass like the other comments said but they didn't. What it did for my great 6x9 kenwoods was restrict airflow from the back of the speaker. So when the speakers would hit low notes it would suck in the baffles like a paper bag. The 6x9 speakers weren't hitting like I thought they should so I took the baffles off and Vuala! It was like night and day. I rather sacrifice a little moisture gettting to my speakers than some nice bass.

    Good Idea!

Written By Dave, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, January 12, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Baffles are probably the smartest thing for your stereo! With the space behind the speaker, (open), it doesnt have anything for the bass to reverb off of. If you put these baffles behind your speakers, it protects them and adds greater handling of bass and noise.
