Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Infinity Primus P162

by Loren Barstow

The Infinity Primus P162's rich, detailed sound makes it a great choice for music and movie lovers alike. Use a pair of these speakers in a stereo setup to enjoy pinpoint imaging and a wide soundstage from your favorite tunes. Or, if movies are your thing, you can use Primus P162s as part of a home theater system for dynamic and enveloping surround sound. All of the speakers in the Primus line are voice-matched, making it easy to assemble a complete system to fit your needs and budget.

The speaker's cabinet houses a 3/4" tweeter for the highs and a 6-1/2" woofer to handle the midrange and bass. Both drivers are made from Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm™ material. This super-tough material uses an aluminum core to add rigidity to the drivers for clean, accurate sound, even when you crank up the volume.

Recommended center channel: Infinity Primus PC350.

    Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The 6-1/2" M.M.D. cone woofer offers extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Waveguide: The P162's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Crossovers: The speaker features a 2-way crossover system with crossover frequency at 3000Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Voice-Matched: The P162 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

    Enclosure Design

Grille: The speaker comes with a removable cloth grille with a rigid plastic frame.

    Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

    Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: The speakers come with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet for each speaker to help secure them in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Wall Mounting: The optional B-Tech heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers.

    Rich sound

Written By Henry, Arlingotn, VA on Friday, February 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers bring to life many details that I've been missing. If you like thumping bass, consider adding a subwoofer. I listen to a lot of Jazz and the imaging by these speakers are great and all I need. These speakers are great and the price Crutchfield has on them is a no brainer. I'm using them as desktop speakers. They're oversized for desktop speakers ... more like bookshelf or stand speakers, but I have a big desk and so it doesn't really matter The clearness to the sound is awesome and cannot be beat for the price.
    Pros:
    Clarity

    Infinity Primus P162

Written By Jeff S., Collierville, TN on Monday, February 13, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Infinity Primus P162 speakers about two months ago and I'm really enjoying them. Hooked them up to my home theater system and they really sound good. They've added both depth and clarity (and VOLUME) I've been missing for a long time (just had the (4) little satellite speakers, center speaker & subwoofer before). I own Infinity home theater speakers as well as car speakers and have found their products to be admirable. I definately recommend these speakers.

    Infinity Primus 162

Written By WillieC, Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday, February 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been a fan of Infinity speakers for a very long time. I purchased a pair of Reference 2000.1s, along with a BU-2 subwoofer nearly twenty years ago and have since sworn that I would only replace them with another pair of Infinitys. I shopped around when it came time to buy new speakers, but decided to stay true to my word. I must admit I was a bit hesitant to buy speakers without listening to them first, but I trusted Infinity to deliver a quality product. I have no regrets in doing so. I purchased a pair of the P162s along with a PC350 center channel from Crutchfield, and kept my old BU-2 sub. I received them yesterday, set them up in the same locations that the 2000.1s were in, and put them to the test. I was amazed! The P162s deliver crisp, clear highs and mids, along with nice deep bass response, even at low volumes. I haven't tried them without the BU-2, but who what's to. I highly recommend these speakers to anyone who wants great sounding bookshelf speakers at a great price.
    Pros:
Great sound, great price, great service. What else could one ask for?
    Cons:
    Haven't found any yet.

Great speakers with good range. I set them up in my bedroom for TV and movies. I think they will do well even without a Sub Woofer.
    Pros:
Great sound and range and price.
    Cons:
Just a little on the large size for bookshelf speakers. But no big deal.

Pretty amazing value. Bass response wasn't as strong as I had hoped for but is better than the cheap speakers they replaced. Gotta ad a sub now. The high end is great.

Infinity P162 Speakers Excellent Tonality for the dollars

Written By GaryJ, Cherry Hill, NJ on Wednesday, February 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't let the price fool you. The Primus line of Infinity brand speakers are nothing short of excellent especially when considering the cost to value ratio. These speakers compete with brands triple the price. I purchased these speakers to meet my sound mixing needs. As a full time musician and videographer, I appreciate the accuracy of tone these speakers putout. From previous purchases, I own a home theater speaker system comprised completely of Infinity Primus speakers and have been so pleased.
    Pros:
Consistent manufacturing. Quality made and attractive looking cabinets.
    Cons:
    None

    Very Good Rock-N-Roll Speakers

Written By Ron M, San Antonio, TX on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was surprised by the range and overall fidelity of these speakers. I have them in a samll "workout" room. I drive them with 60 watts of continuous power and push the high frequencies with a separate graphic equalizer. Crank up anything from Aerosmith to ZZ Top.
    Pros:
    Small size, overall frequency response.
    Cons:
The speakers do not "ATTACH" the recommended floor stand. They simply rest on top.

    Surprising sound for it's size.

Written By Jeff, Asheboro, N.C. on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers as an addition for a low power tube amp kit that I put together. Wow,was I am surprised at the bottom end, (bass) and the treble was not harsh, just sweet-easy to listen to. I purchased another pair along with two Infinty 362 tower speakers while they are on sale. I'm sure there are better speakers out there for critical listening, but for the money and sound that I here in these, I will continue to enjoy for a long while.
    Pros:
Good sound, great price, doesn't take a lot of space

    Suprised!

Written By JerryK, Brodhead, WI on Wednesday, November 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very well suprised with the sound of these speakers. The bass response is quite exceptional for a speaker of this size. I'm using them as surround sound speakers and they have done nothing but add to the whole home theater system easily out performing the Pioneer speakers they replaced. It's a whole new experience!! As far as playing music with these speakers within the system.....FANTASTIC!
    Pros:
Price, quality, and power handling capabilities from a bookshelf speaker. Great sound on a budget. Why spend more?

Hooked up as the 'B' speakers on an older Kenwood KR-V7070 receiver with some large floor standing AR speakers on the 'A' line. The P162s added a whole new dimension to my music. A really good value for the high quality of the sound. I love 'em.

    Infinity Primus P162

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A few months ago I bought my first pair of these P162's. I bought at the same time a Yamaha RX397 receiver that was suggested as a good pairing in an ad from Crutchfield. The gear was to update some of my tired old stuff in my basement Rec-Room. I was very impressed with both components. The speakers sound great! In my opinion they perform similar to speakers 2 or 3 times their price range. I was so impressed by them that as soon as they were back in stock I ordered another pair to put on the "B" stereo channel of my main unit upstairs(A Dennon receiver also purchased from Crutchfield) Wow! I love em! The price, 5 year warranty, and crutchfield service, how can you go wrong?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to be Audiophile and used Infinity HI-End speakers long time ago. So when I wanted to replace my home theater speakers I selected these and hopped for the best because of low price. Boy I was not disappointed. They sound excellent. Make sure to buy good matching stands. I always preferred bookshelf speakers on stand instead of full cabinet speakers because I believe excessive cabinetry muddy the sound.

    Primus P162

Written By Chuck, Ga. on Monday, June 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even though these are being replaced with the P163, I still felt the need to review this speaker for those of you that may be on the bubble about buying a pair. For my money, and ears, they are a steal! I have a pair connected as a B set with the P362's as my A's in a stereo music listening application. They are about 1/3 the size, a bit more subdued sounding than their larger siblings, but the overall musical performance is excellent. The bass is exceptional, the mids and highs are smooth with no signs of the harshness common in many speakers at this price. A true bargain to my ears and wallet!
