Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the Alpine KCE-422i iPod cable

by Tim Sprinkle
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Want to listen to your iPod through your car audio system? If you have an Alpine stereo with "Full Speed™" controls, all it takes is this KCE-422i connection cable — there's no extra gear to install. With just one cable between your iPod and your stereo, you'll get super-fast data transfer and full playback control.

Once connected, Alpine's Full Speed controls allow you to manage just about every playback function right from the radio's faceplate. QuickSearch™ makes it easy to find the music that you want — jump between artists, albums, and playlists at the push of a button. You can even scroll through songs using the rotary control knob. Album, artist, and song information from your iPod will show up on the radio's display, too.

On the sound front, you can use the Bass Engine tone controls on your Alpine stereo to coax the best possible performance out of your compressed music files. Alpine's Full Speed connection works with all dockable iPods and charges the iPod's battery while it's connected. Length: 6-1/2'. Warranty: 1 year.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Note: Sorry, Crutchfield cannot ship Alpine products to Guam or Puerto Rico.

Features

iPod Full Speed: The KCE-422i allows you to connect your Apple iPod to select 2006-2009 Full Speed-compatible Alpine head units. It has an iPod dock connector on one end and a "D-shaped" 10-pin DIN plug on the other end. There is no hideaway box to deal with as with many other iPod adapters.

iPod Compatibility: This adapter cable can be used to interface a compatible receiver with most iPods with a dock connector. The cable gives you full control and full sound at full speed. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod through Playlist, Artist, Album or Song searches. You can view Artist, Album, Song Information and Song Number right on the head unit's display. The cable will also power the iPod and charge the battery. The Alpine KCE-422i is "Made for iPod" compatible and supports the following iPod model features (as of Dec. 2009):

Note: The Full Speed cable will not charge the iPod nano (4th/5th generation) or iPod touch (2nd/3rd generation) without the Alpine KCX-422TR 12V-to-5V iPod adapter (500KCX422T, sold separately). Apple firmware updates may change functionality results.

Alpine Head Unit Compatibility: The KCE-422i is compatible with select 2006-2009 Alpine head units. These head units have a dedicated iPod Full Speed connector. The cable does not connect to the Ai-NET interface on some Alpine receivers. Once the adapter is connected, the iPod appears on the head unit's display as a selectable source. Current compatible head units include: CDA-9884, CDA-9886, CDA-9887, CDE-9872, CDE-987, and the EX-10.

Works great, until it shorts out

Written By tim, Southfield, MI on Wednesday, January 13, 2010

I have been using this cable for about a month now with a 1G iPod Touch. It charges and
plays music just like it's supposed to, but please note that it will not charge 2G and later
Touches. You also cannot navigate through music on the ipod while it is playing on the
head unit.
Yesterday while I was in the car, the music suddenly stopped, and the head unit
displayed "Searching..." After a few minutes, I unplugged the cable and found that the
ipod was burning hot, along with the cable connector. There was a tiny burn mark on the
cable connector across a few of the pins. Turns out the cable had shorted out my ipod
somehow and nearly destroyed it. I was lucky because after cooling down and rebooting
the ipod a couple times, it still works.

Alpine needs an update

Written By John, Rockwall, TX on Saturday, December 26, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using this cable with the Alpine CDA-9883 for 2 years and have been extremely pleased. I have a iPod Nano tucked in a small cubby in the Honda Pilot and everything works great. The reason I docked it one star is I recently upgraded my wife's phone to the iPhone 3GS (2nd Gen) and this cable is not compatible. I receive an error when I connect the phone but if I ignore the message it will play music through the connection but the alpine deck will not control the device and it will not charge. Check your compatibility for the best experience (the iPhone is not listed). Great website Crutchfield!

Works with 3rd Gen Classic 10GB IPOD

Written By Demian, Mission Viejo, CA on Friday, September 11, 2009

I was skeptical when my friend gave me this head unit with the IPOD cable. For the heck of it I plugged the cable in and connected my 3rd Gen IPOD classic and sure enough it charges, displays the APLINE logo and can be controlled through the deck. Alpine and Crutchfield says in the technical specifications only 4th Gen and up classic will work, my 3rd gen works and I don't have to worry if I leave it in the car.

Works As Advertised

Written By Sacha, Arlington, VA on Friday, April 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a whole lot to say about a cable. The KCE-422 works just as advertised, feels well made and was long enough to allow for some flexibility when installing.

What can I say but right on. Plug it in and forget about it. Works fine with my iPod 3rd gen nano. Fast, no problems with connection and it charges it too. Cord a little too long but oh well. Love it!

Charging newer iPods

Written By Bob, NC on Sunday, November 09, 2008

If you have/are buying one of the iDA-x00 Digital Media Receivers, you only need this cable if you want to the the head unit with an pre-5th Generation iPod. If you have a 5th Generation iPhone, iPod Touch or iPhone, the USB-to-iPod cable that comes for free with the head unit will work (and charge) the newer iPods.

I bought this cable along with my iDA-100 DMR & installed both the USB cable and the Full Speed cable in my glove compartment. The USB cable connects to a USB port on the back of the head unit, and the Full Speed interface cable plugs into the Full Speed interface on the back of the head unit, so both cables can be connected & used at the same time. I am currently using an old 4th Generation iPod in this car, but at some point when that one dies I want to get the functionality supported by the USB cable (album art, etc.) without having to yank the head unit out again, so I just installed both cables when the unit went into the dash.

Not clear on what happens if you want to use both a Bluetooth module AND a Full Speed iPod cable, since there is only one Full Speed jack on the head unit...maybe the Bluetooth module has both Full Speed in and out jacks??...

Not needed with new Alpine iDA-X iPod models

Written By bsfiosco, NJ on Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought an Alpine iDA-X100 and so far I love it. I bought this cable because the marketing for the product made it sound like you needed this cable to get full IPOD functionality. With this cable the iDA-X100 will NOT display the IPOD album images. That only occurs if you use the include (free) USB cable. So save yourself some money and pass on this if your getting and iDA-X### model. The only way you find out this information is to read the manual after you buy it or read the online manual before you buy it which few people ever do.

Won't Charge ITouch

Written By David, Cleveland, OH on Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product worked great until I bought a new Apple ITouch last night. I was very displeased this
morning when I plugged the ITouch into my car stereo and it informed me that charging was not supported. I sure hope Alpine gets their act together and produces a new cable. I have three
car stereos set up this way, I don't want to switch from Alpine but I will if they don't act and another brand does.

Won't charge iPhone 3G

Written By James, Arlington, VA on Friday, August 29, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This cable won't charge the iPhone 3G. It can control it just fine (I'm using it with the CDA-9857) but Apple changed which pins are used to charge the phone. Supposedly manufacturers were given ample notice that this was going to happen but many chose to ignore it.

Hopefully Alpine updates this cable, especially considering all the headunits they sell/have sold that use it and the fact that it is still a current product. My guess is that all new ipods released after the iPhone 3G will use this new pin layout for charging (via usb pins vs. firewire). Alpine, please offer an updated product!

Nice

This works great. You dont have to worry about having your iPod out. I have mine safely tucked in the glove box out of the way. Controls on the Alpine deck are identical to the iPod controls. Very easy use. Would recommend to anyone

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does exactly what it should do, I like that it charges the ipod. You can't use the ipod while it's plugged in but have to use the head unit's interface, which doesn't bother me, but may bother some.

Alpine KCE-422i iPod cable

Written By green_giant, Washington on Thursday, March 13, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is excellent and works exactly as advertised. My only goal would be finding a way to control the playback from the iPhone. (yes, this works for an iphone after you click through the airplain mode question) I'd just rather be able to use the touch screen versus control from the head unit but this adaptor was the only style of input that my CDE-9881 accepted.

Cord works great

Written By Wayne, Janesville, WI on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

First of all, for all the bad reviews, they do not apply to this product. The interface has nothing to do with this product, but the cd player it is hooked up to. Also, I don't know if you know what an Ipod is, but they automatically reset to the first song after a period of time no matter what, also not this products fault.

SO, about this product, it works fast and effectively. The sound quality is crystal clear, even through high end systems. It is an easy choice to get this product over and FM transmitter or other Ipod product.
