Universal

Our take on the Universal MRF-100B PowerBlaster™

by Ralph Graves

The MRF-100B PowerBlaster™ base station is specifically designed to increase the range of Universal's RF10 and RF20 remotes. It receives the radio frequency (RF) commands these remotes transmit and converts them into infrared (IR) signals that can control your components. That allows you to operate your audio/video system from a range of 50 to 100 feet away, inside or out.

The base station sends commands out to your components via a built-in IR "blaster," or emitter. For gear that's not line-of-sight with the PowerBlaster, you can use the included mini emitters. Each of these small IR blasters comes with a self-adhesive pad and a 10-foot connecting cable, so they can be positioned just about anywhere, like behind a cabinet door.Turn on your stereo when you're out on your patio, and adjust the volume of your outdoor speakers in the process — the RF signal penetrates walls, floors, and doors. With the PowerBlaster, your Universal remote becomes a whole-house solution for controlling your entertainment system.

  • designed for use with Universal RF10, RF20 and RF30 remote controls

    Features

Overview: The PowerBlaster (MRF100B) RF receiver provides an affordable and innovative "whole-house" solution to home theater operation. After receiving RF signals from an RF10, RF20, or RF30 universal remote control, the MRF100B converts the signals to IR commands and sends the commands to out-of-sight components via built-in front blasters, indoors or outdoors, up to 100' without pointing.

Flashers: Self-adhesive flashers affix to the front panels of your components. The flashers relay commands to components out of sight of the MRF100B's front blaster. The flashers plug in to the MRF100B rear flasher line output jacks. Each flasher has a 9.75' cable to easily reach components on nearby shelves.

Mounting: Using the four enclosed screws, you can choose to fix the mounting plate to a wall or the back of your component cabinet.

Connections: The MRF100B has the following connections on its back panel:

    • DC 9V: for use with the supplied AC adapter
    • IR Outputs: six minijacks for use with supplied flashers

Fantastic product. I added bookshelves to both sides of the fireplace, and placed the tv above the fireplace. My cable box and dvd player are located inside the cabinets. I didn't like the doors being open to control the tv and with this great product I don't have to. The signal goes through the door and works perfectly. No more leaving the doors open for me!
    Pros:
    I like everything about it.
    Cons:
    I can't think of any..

    Crappy cables

Written By Ivan, Bothell, WA on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this device with the Universal RF-20. Very happy with the setup and operation. However, within two weeks an IR cable failed and it was painful to diagnosed. After I changed it, everything was fine again. A week later, another IR cable failed. Aaaarrrrgghhhh! The system does like magic and works like a charm but I'm concern with the quality since not one but two IR leads failed so quickly. I already ran out of extra IR leads. Otherwise a great product.

Worked as stated. I was happy to discover that I did not need to use the wire flashers.
My Pioneer receiver picked up the signal with the station just sitting on top of the
receiver. This eliminated the unsightly wires.

A good addition for the Universal RF remotes

Written By Jonathan, Ringgold, GA on Thursday, April 30, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I very much recommend the Universal MRF-100B Powerblaster to anyone purchasing the Universal RF remotes, if you want the capability of being able to control components that are out of sight. The overall setup of this product, from start to finish, was very easy.

I only had to use one of the mini IR flashers that come with the MRF-100B to get the applicable components to work out of sight from the Universal RF10 remote I have. For other set ups, you may need to use more mini IR flashers. The reason I wanted the MRF-100B is so I could listen to music at night in bed without ever having to get up to change the volume, change tracks, turn components on/off, etc. Now, I can do just that. Cool!

The only problem, and I'm not sure if it is the RF10 remote or the MRF-100B causing this, is that when I try to change tracks sometimes it will take several attempts at pushing the button on the RF10 to get the track to finally change. If not for this problem, which could actually be the RF10's problem, I would have given the MRF-100B five stars.

The MRF-100B has really helped me to get more enjoyment out of my entertainment system. It nicely compliments the Universal RF remotes, if you need its particular capabilities.

    Ultimate Control

Written By Gary, Arnold MO on Wednesday, February 20, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! I liked the first one so much that I bought another. Initially I purchased one for the bedroom. All of my equipment was going in the closet and I needed the RF control to control my equipment through the wall. Then I got another for my home stereo with outdoor speakers. It works all the way from the edge of my back yard (about 100 feet away and through an exterior wall). They are both great. The remote by itself is a great universal remote. The web site is not so clear that you need the RF reciever to do thru the wall and room to room though.
