Our take on the P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Ford

by Tim Sprinkle

Got a portable music player? Then you probably know that a direct connection to your vehicle's radio will give you the best possible sound quality. The Precision Interface Electronics FRDR-AUX adapter lets you convert the CD changer port on your Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury factory stereo into an auxiliary input, suitable for connecting an add-on satellite radio tuner, portable music player, or other audio source.

Just plug the 13-pin speaker/power cable and the 14-pin data connecter into the factory radio's changer ports, connect your portable player to the adapter's RCA inputs, press "CD" on the radio, and go. (See "Hands-on Research for full installation details.) This adapter uses the CD changer port — once connected, you can't use a changer with your factory radio. Warranty: 90 days.

Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Features

Overview: DPX Auxiliary input converters by PIE (Precision Interface Electronics) are designed to convert the CD Changer port of the OEM radio (with CD Changer controls) into an auxiliary input. Devices such as Satellite Radios, DVD Players, VCRs, MP3 Players, and Game Systems can be added the the OEM radio without an FM Modulator. DPX Technology maintains full function of all factory steering wheel and rear seat controls.

Compatibility: The FRDR-AUX allows you to add an auxiliary input to the factory radio in select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. The adapter plugs into the factory system using the supplied cable, avoiding wire splicing and modifications.

Note: The adapter takes the place of the CD changer, so you cannot have a CD changer and the adapter connected to your factory radio at the same time.

Connections: The adapter has two RCA (left and right audio) inputs on one side. You'll need an audio cable (sold separately) to connect your audio source to the RCA inputs of this adapter. On the other side of the adapter is a rectangular 10-pin jack that interfaces with the supplied cable. The adapter end of the cable has the 10-pin plug and the other end has a harness which connects into the OEM Tuner/Amplifier module (location of which varies by vehicle). There is also a set of jumper harnesses attached to the included cable that are inserted between the Tuner/amp and the cable run from the radio in the dash.

Note: Please take note of the length of cable you'll need, particularly if the adapter will be trunk mounted & your audio source near the front of the vehicle.

Mounting: The adapter can be secured to any flat surface.

GREAT PRODUCT!

Written By ELLIOT, NEW JERSEY on Saturday, June 16, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After my cd changer died I want to install an MP3 solution in my 2000 Ford Taurus. After checking and searching several websites for an MP3 solution I discovered the P.I.E Aux Input Adapter. Some websites had this unit for the same price as Crutchfield but I didn't trust them - so I stuck with Crutchfield. They truly go above and beyond. With your purchase you get a master install sheet and a DIN removal tool free of charge. I didn't need the tool but the master sheet did come in handy. The install took me about 4 hours because it wasn't easy running the speaker cable (purchase separately) from the trunk to my center console. I also drilled a custom hold in my center console with a grommet to hide the RCA to mini adapter cable. Now I can play my iPod through the factory stereo and it sounds great not to mention my audio cables are out of sight when not in use.
Pros:
Great product.
Cons:
Not a quick install if you want to do it right. Some basic tools are needed and common sense.

A great, easy fix for Ford's less than ideal audio setup!

Written By Brian, Kansas City, KS on Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'd always used a tape deck converter to listen to my iPod in my car despite it being a less than ideal setup. I got a junk yard replacement for the center audio/climate console in my '98 Taurus when the tape deck broke down and when the second console broke down a year later, I was really glad to find this solution. This converter plugs in easily and with an RCA-3.5mm headphone jack converter, I can listen to whatever I want in my car without losing audio integrity as with through the tape deck converter. Sounds as good as Ford's factory speakers were ever meant to sound.

Excellent sound & installed in 10 minutes

Written By Abdul Alatawi, Morgantown, WV on Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Ford Taurus SE
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once I received the adapter about two weeks ago, I was eager to install it on my 2003 Ford Taurus right away, and it took me less than 10 minutes. I have a CD single disc which can be connected to a 6 disc CD changer in the trunk. To install it, I opened the trunk and found on the left side (The driver side) a box with three outputs, two are connected and the third one is free. I just looked up the cables and the pins and how they formed and connect each of the Four ends of the cable that came with the adapter to the three ports of the box in the trunk. Then connected the two audio ports on the adapter with a Y audio cable the ends with a male end which I connected to my iPhone. The sound is excellent. The adapter has good price comparing to professional installed product. I went to an audio shop in my town to compare the prices. The technical said that he would need to order the adapter for me and it will arrive in 5 days then he will charge me for the adapter then a lot more for labor and needed cables. However, when you buy the adapter from crutchfield.com you will pay less and wait about 3 to 5 days and install it easily in 10 minutes. So, Thank you very much crutchfield.com team for this amazing product.
Pros:
Easy to install, Excellent price comparing to provisional installed product, Excellent quality sound. You save money.
Cons:
You need to buy about 10feet Y audio cable.

Great Alternative to FM Transmitters

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was easy to install (once I found the box in the trunk) and running
a cable from the trunk to the front cabin is easy enough. I'd recommend having
someone install this device if you're not comfortable with the DIY and OEM
nature of this part.

Worked As Expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It installed easily in my 2003 Taurus. I originally had the CD player in the
dash but no changer. This plugged in and worked without problems. I've been
using it nearly everyday for about 10 months to play music from my phone or
ipod. Running a cord under the carpet up to the center console was the most
unpleasant part of installation.

Great Option for SiriusXM radio

Written By Kevin, Grand Island, Nebraska on Monday, February 07, 2011

Easy to install, plug and play, easily removable if you plan on selling or giving the car away.

Best purchase i have made in my 19 years of life, this product saved me hours of headache, and having to go buy a new cassete adapter every 4 weeks (they lose magnetism and start to sound very staticy).

the price could be lower, but it is worth every penny. Most...well, all of them anymore, with the introduction of the "connect" technology, Sattelite Radio instalations have gotten so simple, you'd have to be crazy to get it wrong.

but, this kit here provides an awesome alternative to tape or FM adapter kits to ford taurus owners, get it

Great product

Written By Kevin J, Spokane, WA on Sunday, January 30, 2011
Installed in a 1998 Ford Taurus
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for my 1998 Taurus SE. It has one of the worst stereo designs ever, and I cant
think of why Ford did it. The environmental controls are built in with the stereo unit, which
means your stuck with that stereo, no after market options. Annoying. Thankfully it had a
6 disk changer in the trunk, and double thankfully that barely worked. With this device
and a long 1/8" (I think) cable ran up to the console somewhere you are able to plug in
any or portable music device. This basically bypasses the CD Changer to your portable
music player. For my vehicle I just press the CD button on the stereo. Works very well. I
used to use a tape adapter but on my long 1 hour commutes it would over heat and
when you are listening to audio books it gets very frustrating, to the point where I would
pull out headphones. It is a relief to not have to worry about any of that anymore. And I
am thankful again to have music instead of crappy radio when I am in the mood for
music. I am really happy with this purchase.

P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Ford

Written By spaceman_spliff, Nashville, TN on Sunday, January 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great on my 2005 Mercury Sable. Very easy to install <10mins setup. Sadly, the right
channel has stopped working after a year. the warranty is only 30 days. I will likely purchase
another one as there is no alternative solution near this price, and replacing the head unit in
a our taurus/sables involve replacing the climate controls, bypassing the rcu, and $$$.

What an easy solution to update your wheels!
The CD changer connection wa easy to find and the connection
of this adapter took less than 10 minutes.

I now play my Sirius and Ipod directly from the radio.

I would recommend this solution to
anyone looking to direct connect your music through your radio.

They break! But still a decent option...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was ok, and the sound was fine with the stock speakers. I loved it! But after 11 months (out of warranty of course) the left channel failed abruptly. I will probably buy another and cross my fingers, but be aware. They should give a longer warranty since so many of them break.

So Far...So Awesome!

Written By Ford Taurus Fun, Roanoke, IL on Thursday, August 12, 2010
Installed in a 1999 Ford Taurus
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My dad installed a 6-CD changer in my Taurus, and I have an iPod...yeah. I wanted something better. I found a mod that involves soldering into your CD changer that would cost me $10, but then again, if it failed I could screw something up with my headset. So after reading the reviews, I bought this. Oh my goodness, what a quick and easy install! Literally 20 mins, and that's probably because I was fumbling around and trying to be gentle with my car. I had to push really hard to get the input to go into my stupid tuner; the connector literally made a snapping noise when it went in all the way! And I thought, "Well, either I made it WORK or I broke it." Fortunately, it works. The sound is so clean and wonderful. Thanks, Crutchfield. Great product, great install.

1999 Ford Taurus w/ MACH stereo

Written By Justin, DFW, TX on Tuesday, May 04, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just wanted to add my piece to the pie - this thing is AWESOME. Took literally 15 minutes to install in my 1999 Taurus (with MACH stereo) and it sounds great! The only 'hard' part is trying to hide the cable that you have to run from the trunk to the cabin of the car.

Note - Crutchfield says: "Factory radio must have one preset button labeled "COMP" and another preset button labeled 'SHUFFLE'."

I didn't have either one of those buttons - but it still worked. You just hit the 'CD' button and it will switch over.

Fantastic

Written By Anonymous, Sanford, NC on Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Installed in a 2007 Ford Taurus SE
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked this up for the wife's '07 Taurus SE. Basically because we have mp3 hookup in my car and she was envious. First off, the box from Crutchfield came amazingly well packed. The unit mounted into the trunk very easily (I had to use one of my one screws/bolts to mount to the inside wall of the trunk) and it all plugged in very nice.

I then routed to the front of the vehicle a 1/8 inch headphone jack (I used a RCA to 1/8 jack converter back in the trunk by the module). I ran the cable in through the back seats, under the back seat and then through the sill trim and under the front seat into the center console via a small hole I drilled. I stashed extra cord in the armrest and so when its not being used it can be stowed into the center console for a clean look.

I am REALLY happy with the audio quality. There is no noticeable signal loss from sending the signal all the way to the trunk. Everything that was included was fantastic, and very useful (except for the stereo removal tool, I didn't need it with it being mounted in the trunk).

Shipping from Crutchfield was super fast, and I am very happy with the overall purchase. Anyone with a previous gen Taurus (not a rebadged 500) should pick one of these up.

Thanks Crutchfield!

This product is great. Took it out of the box and was hooked up in 10 minutes. My product mounts in the trunk, so you may need cable to run from trunk to dash. Only place I could find something for my car was at Crutchfeild. Thanks Guys!

Nice Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just purchased this adapter last week and installed it on my 2004 Sable
over the weekend. Everything was included (except a cable to connect to I-
Pod, which I purchased also) and it plugged right in without any problems.
The sound quality is a quantum leap over the FM Modulator I was using
before. I hope I don't experience the channel cutting out like I saw in the
other reviews, so far so good. Also, hats off to Crutchfield for the prompt
service I received. I ordered the unit Thursday afternoon and had it in my
hands as of Saturday afternoon, with the basic shipping. Pretty good. I
would definately recommend Crutchfield and the adaptor to everyone.

A Must-Have for any Taurus Owner

Written By Neal, Grand Blanc, MI on Saturday, March 14, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this product for my 2000 Ford Taurus SE.

Installation took under 15 minutes, and yielded a practical aux input for my vehicle.

My only gripe is that it currently produces feedback when used with my Sirius Satellite radio. I'm not sure if this has to do with my Sirius radio, or with this product.

Every car should have an aux input. Purchase this for your Taurus today.

P.I.E. Aux Converter

Written By Dave, Houston, TX on Monday, September 08, 2008
Installed in a 2007 Ford Taurus SEL
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A breeze to install, it took only a few minutes to install the aux unit on my 2007 Ford Taurus SEL w/CD changer. The CD changer is in the center
console but the controller is mounted on the left rear fender well in the trunk. Its a large silver box behind the carpet on the wall. Just disconnect
three of the four connections and replace them with the AUX unit connectors. Once installed press the "CD" button to activate the AUX unit.

I installed a Sirius Stratus 4. I ran the AUX cable up the left side door moldings to the dash, I ran the Sirius antenna up the right door moldings to the dash for a really clean installation. Also, you can plug the AUX cable into a Y cable and have the ability to alternate between the Sirius receiver and an I-Pod at the same time (although only one at a time should be plugged in), The whole install took about an hour and sounds GREAT!
