What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker 10CVR122

by Dominic Devito

Kicker CompVR subs let you kick out the jams without tearing a hole in your wallet. These subs handle plenty of power, and get their fierce sound from tough, injection-molded polypropylene cones with reliable Santoprene™ surrounds. The unique SoloKon™ cone with its 360-degree back bracing keeps going strong when the bass gets heavy, while perimeter venting in the strong steel basket keeps the voice coils cool for dependable performance.

The 10CVR122 12" sub sports dual 2-ohm voice coils that give you more wiring options when setting up your system. The sub's cool-looking black finish highlights the potent low end you'll hear and feel. Boat owners: Kicker certifies the CompVR subs for marine use, so you can generate some serious bass waves out on the water.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Design: The Comp VR's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Comp VR features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Basket and Motor Assembly: The strong steel basket features perimeter venting to help cool the high-temperature voice coil wires and prevent breakdown. The overall motor structure design is based on technology found in Kicker's flagship Solo-Baric line of subwoofers, and allows the sub to handle more power and take more abuse. The high-mass solid pole piece removes potentially damaging heat.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

    Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

    • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 1.0 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil)
    • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 4.6 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

    Recommended Vented Box Volume:

    • Compact: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5" x 12.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)
    • SQ: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 12.5" port opening; 20.5" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Awesome sound - My first sub woofer

Written By Joe F., Saint Leonard, MD on Thursday, July 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start off by saying this is the first and only sub woofer I've ever had installed, and man was it worth it.

I got one with a Sound Ordnance sealed enclosure and powered it with a Hifonics BRZ1200.1D amp. My head unit is a JVC with built in high- and low-pass filters and also a volume and bass booster knob for my sub, so I can adjust and control all things sub right through my stereo. Pretty convenient when I switch genres and need to pump up or cut back on the bass! It's worth noting that I put this in without upgrading any of the stock speakers, and the sub still booms without overpowering them TOO much. There's no doubt, however, that I need to upgrade from stock if I want to experience the full power of this Kicker sub.

I'm definitely impressed with the sound. Even with my cabin being pretty large and wide open, the bass BUMPS. My friend's first comment when I showed him was "dude, I can feel it in my legs!" I'm not one to try to rattle my car apart with bass, so I was happy to find out that it's not too loud outside of my car when playing at a moderate listening volume. Don't get me wrong, my friends still hear me pull up when I come to their houses, but you won't be shaking other peoples' cars when sitting at a stop light (unless you get 2).

My only complaint is that the higher bass frequencies don't hit as hard as some of the lower. This is probably where a mid woofer comes in to play.

Overall I'm completely satisfied with this purchase!
    Pros:
Body shaking, accurate, clean bass for a good price
    Cons:
Higher frequencies don't hit as hard

    Good to go loud

Written By Rob, Kona, HI on Wednesday, July 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I swapped out a pair of Polk1240DB's for these subs and what I got was more volume and less sound quality. Same amp same box and polks sound better and hit lower but these have more spl and laugh at the 900 rms I am throwing at the pair. I am sure in a ported box these things will get down but they seem to miss some of the notes that the Polks would hit no problem. Since I am running them sealed I think they need a lot more power to wake them up than.
    Pros:
Loud SPL, good power handling, study design, tinsel leads woven in to the spider
    Cons:
like vented box, if you go sealed you lots of power

    AGREE NONE BETTER

Written By snowman, kansas on Thursday, July 14, 2011

Echo the other viewers review these are awsome. ONLY REASON U HAVE NOT SEEN MANY IS THESE ARE THE BRAND NEW MODELS. And as u may or may not know , big difference between these and previous models.. They are bad to the bone plain and simple. If u r wanting to stay at 2ohms get the 10vr124, that way either running 1 or 2 subs u can always wire for 2ohm. They are the exact same sub except for ohms, u can verify thru kicker if u like. Either way these new ones are some of their best, just as good as the previous cvx models if not better. If u need something better(more watts realy) then get the new cvx model. But if your a true audiophile like me who knows u dont need thousands and thousands of watts, these are more than enough.

    Kicker 10CVR122

Written By Brett, South Lake Tahoe, CA on Friday, April 22, 2011

Well, seems as though these subs aren't very popular. I can't even find a video of them on youtube except for mine! I may not be a genuis about subs and amps. But i have two kicker 10cvr122 12's in a ported box hooked up to a kenwood kac 8105d amp. Seeming as these are 2 ohms a piece i had to wire them to get 4 ohms becuase my amp doesnt push out 1 ohm. so i was thinking im not gunna get as much outa 2 ohms as i was before, but i was wrong. so either im pushing out true 4 ohms or 2 ohms. not sure. either way for the money and debating if you should get kickers or any other brand, for the money, and yes the quality AND looks, these work PERFECTLY. Not a thing wrong with them!
