Audioengine

Our take on the Audioengine 5 (A5)

by Tara W.

High-quality sound from a powered speaker system

Audioengine's A5 speakers are perfect for a small dedicated listening system. Connect your iPod®, computer, or another audio source and they'll deliver excellent results — an expansive soundstage that lets you imagine where the vocalist, guitar player, and drummer are positioned on stage.

A5 in black satin
Kevlar woofer

Smart, stylish design

The A5's custom silk tweeters deliver smooth, open highs. Advanced Kevlar woofers provide tight, punchy mids and bass. The drivers are powered by no-nonsense built-in amplifiers. All components are housed in sturdy wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish.

Easy connections

Convenient connections built into the top of the left speaker make it easy to hook up a portable music player like an iPod or iPhone®. A USB power output lets you charge your player, and a minijack input accepts the audio signal from its headphone jack. Rear RCA and minijack inputs let you connect just about any other audio source. Both channels of amplification are built into the left speaker, so you just make a simple, secure connection between the left and right speakers using the gold-plated speaker terminals.

For a wireless connection to your iPod or MP3 player, check out AudioEngine's W1 wireless adapter and W2 adapter for iPod.

From the review Mighty speakers at work and at home: Audioengine A2 and A5

"As I auditioned more of my favorite songs, it was very apparent that the A5s not only pumped out the louder sounds like drum beats and lead guitar riffs well, but also accurately reproduced the little nuances in music like the breath of a singer or the sound of a guitar player sliding between notes."

— Tara, Crutchfield Video Producer and A/V Writer

    Features
    Controls and Connections
    Specifications

    Features

Full-Range Sound: Each of the Audioengine A5s has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter and a 5" Kevlar woofer. The rear ported cabinets offer accurate bass down to 50 Hz (+/-1.5 dB). Audioengine recommends placing the speakers at least 6" from the back wall.

Amplifier: The A5s are powered by a 50-watt RMS x 2 amplifier built into the left speaker. Source components (or wireless adapters) are connected to the left speaker and standard speaker wire connects the two speakers together. With the amplifier built-in, the left speaker is heavier than the right (14 pounds vs. 9 pounds).

Construction: The cabinets are built using 1" MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished, then tuned and tested together to be sold in matching pairs. Both speakers have high-density foam isolation pads on the bottom for placement flexibility.

Audio Inputs: The A5 has two 3.5mm input jacks on the left speaker, one on the top and one on the back. There is no input selector switch so both inputs are live simultaneously; if different signals are presented to both inputs, they are mixed together and both are played through the speakers.

Line Output: A stereo RCA output on the back of the left speaker allows routing the input signal(s) to another component; recorder, powered sub, etc. The output signal level is not controlled by the A5 volume setting, only by the input signal level.

USB Port: On the top of the left speaker there is a powered USB output (5 volt/1.2amp). Its purpose is only to power or charge a USB bus-powered device; for example it will charge an iPod but not control the iPod, and the audio signal is not transferred through the USB port. Audioengine offers wireless adapters (item numbers 772AW1 and 772AW2, sold separately) that can be powered using this port.

AC: An unswitched AC outlet on the back of the left speaker will power an additional component (120 watts max). The manual illustrates the Apple AirPort Express powered by the AC outlet and connected the the rear panel mini-jack input for wireless reception.

    Controls and Connections

Left Speaker: All of the A5 system's controls and connections are on the left speaker; the only terminals on the right speaker are the screw post speaker level inputs for connection to the left speaker's corresponding outputs:

    • Front:
      • Volume: rotary knob controls the system's output volume
      • LED: a blue LED indicates the system is on
    • Rear:
      • Power Input: AC input for included power cord
      • Power Switch: on/off power switch for the built-in amplifier
      • Speaker Output: screw post output for right speaker
      • AC Outlet: unswitched outlet to power another device; 120 watts max
      • Audio Input: 3.5mm stereo mini-jack
      • Line-Level Output: stereo RCA outputs
    • Top:
      • Audio Input:3.5mm stereo mini-jack
      • USB Port: powered USB type A; output only (no audio input)

    Great speakers!!

Written By Anonymous, North Dakota on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice, high quality speakers! I purchased them as a present for my girlfriend who is a music aficionado; she utterly adores them. Very easy setup, she is able to plug in her IPOD or other music source and enjoy amazing sounding music.
    Pros:
Sound quality is great, easy to connect to an IPOD, ease of setup.
    Cons:
A little on the heavy side, but nothing troublesome if you are going to keep them stationary.

    Pretty impressive

Written By Burnsides, Normal, IL on Saturday, January 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These little guys have lots of connection options which is nice, but most impressive is the amount of sound they will produce. Yes they will jam out at a high volume, but more importantly they produce all of the range of any quality speaker set without a sub. I deducted one star for lack of superb mid and high clarity and definition, but really, this is darn good sounding pair of speakers. Especially for powered speakers!
    Pros:
Good sound, volume potential, connection options.
    Cons:
    Slight lack of mid/high clarity.

I just received the A5's today and I'm blown away by the quality and sound of these speakers. They are clear and free of distortion. I listen to all types of music and everything is clear from the lows to highs. Build quality is solid with a great white finish.
    Pros:
    Sound and build quality.
    Cons:
    Nothing Yet.

    These things bang!

I have a small apartment and wanted little fuss. So I bought a pair of these speakers, put them on 31" stands and plugged them directly into my HTPC using RCA to 1/8" cable. These speakers are ridiculously loud and sound great. I bet my neighbors hate me now. Haven't invested in a DAC or new sound card but probably will in the future.

    Audioengine 5 (A5)

Written By tommya, Texas on Saturday, July 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these for my iMac and they sound great. I've got them separated a little over 3 feet and each one is a little under 3 feet from my head usually. Conventional wisdom is to tow them in toward your head but they sound fine to me just straight ahead. I've got each one elevated a little on a short stack of old "For Dummies" books which turn out to be exactly the right size. (Glad I didn't throw them away)

I usually leave the volume control at the 9 o'clock position which gives me plenty of leeway to adjust the volume with the keyboard. Your mileage may vary of course.

The line out is a nice touch. I use it to feed a recorder sometimes. The speakers have to be on for it to work.

I've had 'em for a few weeks now and so far I'm very happy with them.

I was skeptical of the quality of these speakers but I am extremely happy with them.
Big sound and exceptional clarity. I was afraid the white cabinets would be cheesy
but they match well with my dual monitor 27" iMac. Packaging was top-notch too for
    what it's worth.

I really love the sound these speakers put out. The clarity is crystal clear with lots
of sound detail. The build quality is also top notch. Definitely worth the price if you
listen to lots of music or watch TV on your computer.

Wow, super sound, piping in Pandora stations, rock , jazz, reggae, symphony all
are fantastic on this speaker. Try spreading them out. they will easily fill a living

Nice clean balanced sound with surprising power for a product of this type.
Well thought out design. Excellent build quality. Refreshing that they include
a generous set of good quality cables and connectors with it. You get the sense
they've given thought to what users would want and and are trying to go the
extra mile. In classic Crutchfield style, they arrived before promised. The
only improvement that comes to mind is grills...but I don't miss them. I
could not be more pleased. I highly recommend these.

    Great Sound

Written By Marc H, Virginia on Monday, January 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I debated back and forth between the A2s and the A5s. After seeing them up close, the A5's are way too big to be on a desktop near your computer monitor. My application was to sound a 10 x 20 exercise room. The sound did not have to be great just loud and clear and the A5s more than exceeded my expectations.

They have not run hot so far. When you move your iphone or ipod around, you will get a decent amount of interference but it goes away once you put your mp3 player down in one spot. I would not say that it has too much bass but the speaker is a compromise since it is a 2.0 system.

I would not hesitate recommending the A5's though. I just wish the bamboo finish was not more expensive. I got them in black. Still nice.

    Excellent so far

Written By Mark, Washington DC on Monday, December 20, 2010

Conducted a lot of research and finally went with the A5s since I was going to use these
speakers for my basement gym and not my computer. The speakers have yet to go past
11' oclock but really filled the room when I played Deep Purple. A criticism I have heard
is that the it does not go low enough on the bass but I was more than satisfied. Another
criticism I have heard was that the back of the speakers get real hot. But so far, I have
not seen any heat issues at all. I have plenty of ventillation in the back
and the basement is a bit cooler.

Definitely would recommend the speakers for a portable sound system that can be
moved around the house depending on your needs. Very pleased that I went with these
over the A2's. I just wish the bamboo finish was not such a price difference. I went with black
since these are not going to be located in a high traffic area.

Crutchfield's delivery was super quick. Like 2 days!!

    Pretty nice

Written By MikeF, Green Bay, WI on Thursday, December 02, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nicely-built speakers with a rich sound. Wouldn't hesitate to use them if I had a clean
line-in source. The Audioengine AW1 failed for me, so no need to use these speakers
and ended up returning them. Will simply revert to traditional passive speakers. These
are a bit heavy on the base, but probably wouldn't be a problem in the long run for me.
It's nice that almost all the wires I needed came included. Personally, I would have
preferred a speaker screen, but not a big deal.

    Audioengine 5 (A5)

Written By Chris, Baltimore, MD on Friday, November 19, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched speakers for a few weeks before purchasing the A5s and they are even better than expected. It's nice not to need a separate amp or receiver when all you want is incredible sound. These babies are clearer, with a deeper bass, than other speakers I tested which were twice the price, regardless of the fact that every cable is included.

The easy 3.5mm jack for an iPod plus the outlet in the rear allows me to stream music from anywhere in the room.

    Buy. These. Speakers.

Great product, problem with line out

Written By Kyle R, Morgantown, wv on Sunday, October 24, 2010

First and foremost, let me say that these speakers do live up to the reviews
written about them. Phenomenal sound in terms of output and quality, couldnt be
more pleased with them when used alone. However, I wanted some low end
extension past what these speakers could deliver so I purchased a velodyne
impact mini subwoofer to pair with them. I connected the subwoofer to the line
out to find that the master volume on the speakers DO NOT control the volume of
the subwoofer. When I use my ipod and turn up the volume on the speakers, the
subwoofer volume doesn't increase. I don't know if this is an oversight by
audioengine or if they were designed this way for a reason (I am contacting tech
support to find out). If you plan on using these alone, then this is a
fantastic product. However, if you plan on adding a subwoofer then you may have
    issues.

    Holy Cow!

Written By Amham, Northern, NJ on Thursday, October 07, 2010

I've been an audiophole for 40 years and have had many, many high end systems spending tens of thousands over the years. I recently downsize considerably to prepare for retirement and have searched for a small, portable system. Well, look no further, the Audiophile 5's are an amazing tour de force in audio engineering. I've often said that speakers have benefitted most in engineering advances over the years and this speaker certainly upholds that view. Open, smooth and effortless sounding with plenty of clean power. Coupled with any quality source (stay away from high compression) such as a portable CD, DAT, iPod or similar line level output you will be amazed at the performance. Highly, repeat, highly recommended.
