Infinity

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Infinity Primus P362

by Loren Barstow

The Infinity Primus P362 pumps out full, dynamic sound with clarity and detail, no matter what your listening preferences are. Music fans will appreciate the P362's smooth, natural response, and movie buffs will love its lively home theater performance. And if you're a gamer, you'll enjoy the added punch and excitement the P362 adds to your favorite video games.

This speaker's slim cabinet houses a 3/4" tweeter for crisp highs, a 4" driver for accurate reproduction of vocals and other midrange sounds, plus two 6-1/2" woofers for clean bass. All the drivers work together to create rich, room-filling sound across the audible range.

The key to this speaker's performance is Infinity's proprietary Metal Matrix Diaphragm™ speaker material. This material is based on a stiff aluminum core which adds rigidity to the drivers. This allows the speaker to reproduce clear sound, even when you turn it up loud — and the high sensitivity rating means you won't kill your amp in the process.

Recommended center channel: Infinity Primus PC350.
Recommended surround speakers: Infinity Primus P162.

Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The dual 6-1/2" M.M.D. cone woofers offer extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

Midrange: The speaker has a 4" midrange driver mounted above the tweeter. Like the woofers, the midrange uses a rubber surround.

Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Waveguide: The P362's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Crossovers: The speaker features a 3-way crossover system with crossover frequencies at 350Hz and 3300Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Matching System: The P362 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Mounting Options

Outboard/Inboard Feet: The speaker comes assembled with attractive silver outboard feet. If desired, you can replace them with the supplied, less visible, black inboard feet. The feet can be changed with the use of a handheld Phillips-head screwdriver. The overall width is approximately 15/16" less, and the overall height is approximately 1/4" less when the black, inboard feet are used, compared to the outboard feet.

great speaker and customer service

Written By jb, Alabama on Saturday, June 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted a good stereo system, not concerned about an AV system, so after researching, picked these p362's as they were less expensive that the p363's with the same specs. Did not want to have to purchase a sub woofer at the present time. I did have a problem with one speaker and Crutchfield did not have any more to replace, but they took care of the problem at no expense to me. I was so impressed with the service I returned the sony AV receiver I had purchased and ordered a DENON avr1912 receiver with airplay from Crutchfield. The sound is impressive and I have no desire for a sub woofer as the speakers have two woofers in each. For under $700. I have an great sound system. I have heard 4-5 thousand dollar systems and in my opinion, I prefer what I have. Hats off to Crutchfield and the service they provided me. (Did have to purchase a bridge to tie into my modem which is on a different level in the house. Went ahead and replaced the 7 year old modem I had Cand now the Iphones work much faster!)
Pros:
Clear crisp sound, can hear every instrument in song.
Cons:
None, I even prefer the looks of the 362's over the 363's as dust or dog hair from floor will not get on the grills as easily

P362

Written By CK, San Antonio, Tx on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crystal clear highs, decent lows. Dollar for dollar a great set of speakers. For less than $500 you get great sound and great looks.
Pros:
It hits the high notes very well. Very efficient - you don't need a high power receiver to make these guys sing.
Cons:
Bass comes up somewhat short, but with a separate powered sub who need it.

Very Good Speaker System

Written By Frank, Brandywine, MD on Wednesday, March 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Infinity Primus P362 is in my opinion, a Very Good Speaker System. I am currently using it in a Home Theater set up with a, Infinity CS350 center channel, a pair of Infinity OWS-1 real channel on walls, and a infinity PS212 sub. The only thing that I can say, that is not very good, is that, the high frequencies are a bit edgy, for my ears. This can be corrected quite easily by trimming down the high frequencies by about 2 db. These speakers are quite efficient, and will do quite well in a large room. The price point is beyond good. It cannot be beat for value. This speaker in my opinion, falls a step below some of the best, so that is why I gave it 4 stars. Value wise, it is a 5 Star Speaker. Crutchfield, in my opinion, as always, is a 5 Star Online Merchant.
Pros:
Very Good Efficient Speaker. Good in Large Rooms. Value wise-5 Star.
Cons:
Treble a little bright & edgy for me. Need too trim back about 2 db.

Shockingly Powerful

Written By Roger, Waterford, NY on Wednesday, March 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers Match with P 153 surrounds, P142 Rear surrounds, PC 350 Center, PSW 212 Sub, and Denon AVR 3310, Are seamless together. The Mid bass to the highs are High impact without distortion. My movies to just listening to a cd are more alive. I would recommend these speakers to anyone who can't afford to go over $600 a speaker. Small foot print needed for them is another bonus. I am completely Happy.
Pros:
Best birthday present ever. Crystal clear in all ranges and music. Small foot print on floor. Hearing new things in Hd audio I didn't hear before, from the smallest piece of glass falling to every noise of Optimus Prime transforming.
Cons:
Wish I had them for surrounds, need more birthdays. I nothing bad to say about them

Good sound quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using these just for stereo listening and the detailed highs and midrange are great. If you like your bass deep or use these as a home theater setup, get a subwoofer. Otherwise, I like the way they sound just as they are and at a great price on sale @ Crutchfield.
Pros:
Good sound for the money.

Well worth the price and more

Written By Justin, Mikwaukee, WI on Sunday, January 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice speaker. Awesome speaker for the price. I replaced a pair of 21 year old Technics which still work nicely, but at 21 years old it was time to upgrade. They sound really good and look awesome in black..which matches the rest of my gear. Also bought PC250 center channel, PS28 subwoofer, and Onkyo TXNR609 receiver. Our room is large and the floors are wood, and all this together sounds pretty good. Glad I went with these speakers.
Pros:
Awesome bass. Heavy and solid...very well made. Great sound.

Amazing

Written By Jay, Central KY on Friday, December 23, 2011

I purchased these Infinitys as an upgrade from some ANCIENT Scotts. I am blown away at how well they handle power and stay clear. I do think they lack low range punch, but I listen to Hip/Hop and expect a TON of bass. I do have an Infinity sub that covers lows, but you may not. These components are amzing and well worth the price. The clarity is unexpected at this price point, and I would reccomend to anyone without hesitation; as long as you have a sub if your looking for knockdown lows.

Paired with a Pioneer VSX-1021 7.1, Infinty Primus P350, Infinity Primus P162's, and an Infinity 10'' sub.
Pros:
Great sound, Great price
Cons:
Low range sound

Infinity Primus P362

Written By MikeR, BismarckND on Friday, November 25, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound wonderful even straight out of the box. I can't wait to hear them after a bit of a break-in period. I was really surprised at the amount of tight, deep bass I am getting out of these speakers which have six and one half inch woofers. Incredible sound for the money. I would easily give these speakers a five-star rating.

Lets talk "Mid-high Range"

Written By MM, Arizona on Monday, October 03, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off these are not "high end "(so i don't understand when so called Audiofiles knock off ratings for a $200 speaker) For the price I can't imagine a tower sounding BETTER! They are mid-high end speakers and they sound great nice bass, clear and ROCK at high volumes. I have them running on Pioneer VSX 50 and it pushes them well. A must must must is the PC351 paired with these and your ReAdY! Don't mix and match your fronts and center!

detailed, accurate and behaved

Written By jk, Pearl City, HI on Saturday, September 24, 2011

Those are the words that come to mind describing these speakers. Something is missing though, life and emotion to the music, it is like the speakers were perfectly engineered to be as correct as possible in the price range for a computer to hear. These speakers just don't draw you in and are to well mannered for my tastes. I feel these speakers are best for classical, instrumentals, vocals, something you would listen to while sipping on a glass of champagne. I do like listening to those kinds of music from time to time but, I tend to listen to Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, and these speakers are to mild mannered to be optimal for those kinds of music.

Infinity Primus P362

Written By Detroit Rock City, Detroit MI on Wednesday, September 14, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers for the money. I can't believe how clear they sound, they are comparable to speakers that cost much more money in my opinion. I was watching a movie and you could almost hear the individual grains of sand falling in a certain scene. Amazing.

Once I upgrade receivers to really power these I feel like it will only get better. Very pleased.

I've only had them for a couple of weeks, but so far they sound great. Everything from movies and music to video games has a better sound. I was a little worried because the Infinities were replacing a pair of 12 inch Yamahas. But they sound better.

Primus 362

Written By Chuck, Ga. on Thursday, June 16, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are replacing some disappointing Polk speakers. I'll have to say they sound much better than any slim tower that I've heard in their price range. I rate them 5 stars on value, and 4 on overall sound. They sound so much better than the Monitor series Polk they're replacing. I'm using them for 2 channel stereo listening. These seem so much more musical than the bottomless and topless sounding Polks. They are quite usable as stand alone speakers, I added the compact PS28 sub and it really make the overall presence and imaging come alive especially at lower listening levels. They will perform when fed enough signal too. Their definition and vocal clarity when driven hard is much better than expected from an imported speaker at this price. Overall these seem to be a real winner.
