Features
Overview: The Sony SAL70400G (70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM) is a superior quality
lens that is an excellent choice for a wide range of medium to long-distance
telephoto applications. It has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 105-600mm when
used with APS-C format cameras.
Compatibility: The SAL70400G lens is equipped with a Sony
A-mount, and is designed for use with Sony Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras. With an optional
LA-EA1 mount
adapter, this lens can be used on Sony α (alpha) NEX-series hybrid cameras and
camcorders with the E-mount.
G-Series Lens: Sony's G-Series lenses are designed for
maximum descriptive power, maintaining excellent peripheral light
characteristics and maximizing contrast even at the edges of the frame.
Fast Aperture: The fast F4-5.6 aperture enables you to shoot
at higher shutter speeds, making it ideal for sports photography.
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: The lens is equipped with
two
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements for sharp, high contrast images at all
focal lengths.
Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM): The built-in Super Sonic wave
Motor (SSM) gives you fast, smooth, quiet focusing.
Auto/Manual Focus: You can switch between AF (auto focus)
and MF (manual focus) on the lens. The auto focus range can also be selected.
The switch has three positions: Full (no distance limit--auto focus works in the
entire range), 3m-infinity (AF works from 3 meters to infinity), and Manual
Focus. To shoot in AF mode, you will need to set the focus mode to AF on the
camera and the lens. To shoot in MF mode, you can set the lens or the camera to
MF, or both. The focusing ring can be rotated until the subject is in focus.
Direct Manual Focus (DMF): The focusing ring can be rotated
to set the correct DMF when the focus is locked in AF-A (automatic auto focus)
or AF-S (single-shot auto focus).
Focus Hold Button: The lens has a Focus Hold button, which,
when pressed and held, suspends the auto focus function and fixes the focus for
shooting. If the camera has a custom function capability, the function of the
Focus Hold button can be changed. The SAL70400G has three Focus Hold buttons.
Lens Hood: The lens includes a flower-shaped lens hood to
reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality. It has a polarizing filter window
which can be opened to allow the rotation of the polarizing filter (if one is
attached) without having to remove the lens hood. The window should be closed
before shooting. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and stored on
the lens backwards. If using the camera's built-in flash, you will need to
remove the lens hood to prevent blockage of the flash light.
Tripod Mount Collar: Because of its weight and size, the
SAL70400G lens includes a tripod mount collar. The collar can be loosened to
allow you to rotate the camera between vertical and horizontal positions while
mounted. There are index marks at 90° intervals so you can adjust the camera
position precisely. If desired, the collar can be totally removed.
Teleconverter Compatibility: The lens is compatible with the
optional SAL14TC (1.4x) and SAL20TC (2x) teleconverters in MF mode only. The
Auto Focus function on the camera does not work with teleconverters installed.
