Who needs a portable navigator?

Portable GPS puts you in touch with the world when you're on the road. Tap the restaurant icon, and it asks you what kind of food you're looking for. Type in "Mexican," and you're eating a burrito before you know it. A portable navigator not only gets you to your destination, it can also find museums, theaters, and other spots along the way. Many navigators receive traffic reports, so you can avoid jams. Other cool features range from hands-free calling to 3D graphics and lane guidance. Best of all, you can move a portable easily from car to car, a big plus for multi-car families.

Our take on the TomTom VIA 1535 TM

by Dominic Devito

TomTom's VIA 1535 TM portable navigator eliminates distractions when you're behind the wheel by offering hands-free operation with voice command recognition and built-in Bluetooth® connectivity. Free Lifetime Traffic Updates alert you to congestion along your route, while Lifetime Map Updates allow you to keep your maps current. And you can enjoy a panoramic view of the navigator's maps on its user-friendly 5" color touchscreen.

Roam where you want to
Take the VIA 1535 TM with you on a quest for fresh maple syrup or an authentic taco — it includes detailed maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus much of Mexico. Millions of preloaded points of interest let you quickly locate destinations such as hotels, emergency services, and banks. You can add your own favorite stopping points for future travels. TomTom's new Fold & Go EasyPort™ mount makes it easy to move the navigator between cars or to take it with you for safekeeping.

Keep your hands on the wheel
The VIA 1535 TM's built-in Bluetooth connectivity lets you make and receive phone calls through your compatible cell phone without using your hands, so you can concentrate on driving. Voice address input means you don't have to type addresses on the screen any more, while voice recognition lets you perform simple commands just by speaking them aloud.

Lifetime Traffic Updates and Lifetime Maps
With Lifetime Traffic Updates, your navigator receives continuous reports on congestion along your route in most metropolitan areas, so you can steer clear of potential delays. Lifetime Maps allows you to update your TomTom up to four times every year as long as you own it, so your maps and POIs stay current. Simply connect your navigator to your computer, and use the code on the enclosed Lifetime Maps card to download the available map updates from TomTom's website.

Expert guidance
Text-to-speech voice prompts announce the actual street names of upcoming turns, so you'll hear "turn right on College Circle," instead of "take the next right." Advanced lane guidance shows you exactly where you should be to make the next maneuver. TomTom's IQ Routes™ technology uses actual average travel speeds rather than posted speed limits to find the quickest route to your destination. For example, if the shortest route to your destination is traditionally slow when you're approaching, the TomTom will look for a better way there.

Don't get sidetracked by road changes
With TomTom's MapShare software, you can fix map inaccuracies on the spot, instead of waiting for the next update. You can edit speed limits, points of interest, street names and directions, and more right on your VIA 1535 TM. You can also report the error directly to TomTom online and choose to share the fix with other TomTom users. TomTom verifies all changes so you can import edits made by others to your navigator.

    Navigation Features

Maps of North America: Maps of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and parts of Mexico are installed on the unit's built-in 4 GB flash memory.

Lifetime Map Updates: With the Lifetime Map Updates subscription, you can download up to four map data updates per year from tomtom.com.

Note: The non-transferable Lifetime Map Updates subscription is good for the unit's useful life or until TomTom no longer receives map updates from its suppliers, whichever is shorter.

5" Widescreen: The VIA 1535 TM features a 5" widescreen, touch-panel LCD display (480 x 272 pixels) with an anti-glare coating for easy viewing and simple operation.

GPS Receiver: The TomTom VIA 1535 TM features a high sensitivity GPS chipset that gives you fast, accurate positioning.

Voice Recognition: TomTom Voice Recognition technology lets you speak commands and destination addresses so you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. This intuitive Voice Recognition feature will recognize several variations of the same command. You can also use Voice Recognition to change display and audio settings, as well as make phone calls with the built-in Bluetooth.

Driving View: When the TomTom VIA 1535 TM starts, you are shown the Driving View screen, which shows your immediate locations on the current route. The Driving View screen displays your current position; the name of the next major road or road sign information; navigation instructions for the road ahead; the name of the next street to turn on to, information about your trip time, remaining distance and arrival time; GPS signal strength; and Traffic bar. You can tap the screen to zoom in and out of your route.

Text-To-Speech: The VIA 1535 TM also announces directions and street names giving you easier guidance and allowing you to focus better on the road ahead.

IQ Routes Technology: The VIA 1535 TM calculates your routes based on the real average speed measured on roads rather than the posted speed limits. IQ Routes takes into account the time of day you're traveling a road, and how rush hour traffic, pedestrian traffic, and traffic light changes can affect actual traffic speed. You will get a more accurate ETA and the fastest recommended route based on real world data.

Eco Routes: Using the driving data of millions of TomTom users, the unit can indicate which routes are the most fuel-efficient to save you money and have a lower environmental impact.

Advanced Lane Guidance: When navigating difficult intersections, the VIA 1535 TM uses realistic images and a pulsing green arrow to indicate which lane you should drive in to best negotiate the turns.

Points Of Interest: The VIA 1535 TM gives you access to approximately 7 million pre-loaded Points of Interest (POIs) including fuel stations, parking, restaurants, cash machines, and lots more. The POIs are indicated by icons, and in some cases, logos of the business (such as Chevron, Hampton Inn, and Wendy's). You can select which POI categories you want to display.

Favorite Locations: The Favorite menu allows you to store into memory those locations that you visit frequently. You can choose a favorite location the same way you choose a destination. The following menu options are available; Home, Address, Recent Destination, Point Of Interest, Point On Map, GPS Position (allows you to store your current location quickly), latitude and longitude, and the location where your TomTom was last used.

Help Me! Menu: This feature gives you direct access to safety and road assistance information, such as the phone number and route description to the nearest police station or hospital.

Map Share Technology: TomTom's exclusive Map Share feature enables you to add to, update, and personalize your maps instantly. It also lets you share and benefit from fellow users' changes - daily, automatically, and easily. TomTom's large satellite navigation community contributes and exchanges map changes amongst each other, giving you the latest, most accurate and up-to-date mapping information.

    Traffic Information

RDS-TMC Traffic: The VIA 1535 TM includes a cigarette lighter power adapter with an integrated RDS-TMC traffic receiver, which allows you to get the latest traffic updates while you power the unit. The unit must be powered by the included power cord in order for you to receive traffic data.

Note: The Lifetime Traffic subscription is non-transferable, and lasts for the life of the unit, or until TomTom no longer receives traffic updates from its suppliers, whichever is shorter.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Hands-free Calling: The VIA 1535 TM has built-in Bluetooth technology for hands-free calling with a compatible mobile phone. After pairing your phone with the GPS unit, you'll be able to see incoming call information, make and answer calls, and talk hands-free through the device. You'll also have access to your mobile phone book.

    Mounting Options

Integrated Mount: The VIA 1535 TM comes with an integrated suction-cup mount for installing the unit in your vehicle. You can mount the unit on the windshield (using the suction cup), or flip it over and mount it on the dash (using the supplied adhesive disk). No matter which way you turn the unit, the screen automatically flips to the correct orientation.

    Power Requirements

Rechargeable Battery: The unit has an internal Lithium-ion battery. A fully charged battery offers approximately 2 hours of operation when not plugged into the vehicle's power source. The VIA 1535 TM comes with a cigarette lighter adapter and 5' USB power cord. The power cord can be removed and the cigarette lighter adapter's USB port can be used to power other electronic devices (Output is 5V/1.2A).

    TomTom VIA 1535 TM

Written By eoghan27, Lusby, MD on Monday, May 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found the unit to be very accurate, feature rich and the voice recognition easy to use and accurate (typically only takes one time for the unit to figure out the spoken location). The display can be washed out in the sunlight, but most of these types of GPS' have that issue. The only issue I have had is the display just going out - had to RMA the unit back to TomTom for a replacement.
    Pros:
Easy to use and the voice navigation is accurate.
    Cons:
Display stopped working after three uses. Had to RMA the unit back to Tom Tom for a replacement. The traffic can also take a while to show up on the screen.

    Not Accurate. Bad Interface

Written By Bob K, San Antonio, Texas on Friday, April 26, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to buy a TomTom GPS because my latest Garmin (about two years old) was giving me a little trouble and I decided that after using Garmin for years, I'd try something new this time. Bad mistake on my part. Guess I got too used to my Garmins over the years so I ended up hating this thing with a passion. I gave it a full two weeks using it every time I drove somewhere whether I needed it or not because I wanted to try to get used to it. I didn't like the driving screen at all compared to Garmin. Also I found it very difficult to use the interface. Seemed like a lot of steps to be done for everything that was normally simple. I also found the positioning was not as accurate. I put in my home address and it showed that I lived two houses down the street. This never happened with the Garmin. Also, when I navigated to other places I found it was off by quite a distance, sometimes a hundred yards or more. That is not good when you are looking for the entrance driveway to a restaurant or someplace else, especially after dark. I found navigating using the screen was difficult. when not putting in an address and wanting to just use the driving screen to see where you are. It didn't give the names of the upcoming streets so you had to watch the map closely if you were looking for a particular one. My Garmins had those names at the top of the screen in a bar. Also, you have to reach up and push a microphone button before giving a voice command. Garmin you didn't.
    Pros:
Can't think of anything it was good at
    Cons:
Everything above. Bad interface. Not user friendly. Bad driving map. No truly hands free if you always have to take you hands off the wheel to push a microphone button. Bad positioning. Overall, I ended up hating it and returned it after two weeks. I'll stick with my Garmins.

This is our second Tom Tom GPS and they have improved the device and interface considerably. My only complaint is that it takes a long time to download and install map updates so allow yourself a couple of hours to do it.

As usual, Crutchfield is fantastic. 10 stars......
    Pros:
Larger display, automatic time update, improved user inteface.
    Cons:
Takes a long time to download new maps.

    Better than the rest!

Written By Gary, Tombstone, AZ on Friday, November 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started shopping for a new GPS as my Garmin 2460 was routing me way off course. On 3 separate trips the Garmin routing sent me on bad routes. To much information to go into it here. It has taken me way of course to Mexico, the White Mountains, California and really just about every where I needed to go. I am planning a trip to CA and I routed my self from Tucson to California via map. I then did the same route on Map Qwest and the routing was just as I would have planned and it put the Garmin to shame. Routing me near Los Angeles to go to Northern California. Really for real Garmin? I called a product advisor and he suggested another model Garmin and the newer model performed just as bad as the older 2460 model and I sent the new model back. Thanks Crutchfield. I have to admit that seeing a brand name Tom Tom was hard for me to take the product seriously. But many in my circle had nothing but praise for it and I found a Garmin user or two that were not happy with their units. Sure, most GPS units will get you where you want to go but ask yourself are you going the right way? With a Garmin chances are you are not. I received my new Tom Tom Via 1535 and matched its routing to my own and Map Qwest. What a difference, this unit is dead on! Please for your own good, get this Tom Tom and forget the Garmin. I did have a few issues understanding what the unit was doing, updates and some other questions. Unfortunately Crutchfield tech support was a waste of time this go around.
    Pros:
It does better routing. I like the way the puck is designed. Longer USB cable for easy use with your computer. The packaging protected the unit unlike Garmin's. I find this model to be more intuitive than the Garmin.

everything it promised to be. used it to wander around in western north carolina (asheville area) and it was excellent
    Pros:
larger screen ( 5"); audio announcing of route changes ahead and at turning points; comes with both auto and wall recharging cords.
    Cons:
in the heat (90's), the windshield 'sticking' device caused it to fall down several time - inconvenient but not catastrophic

I do alot of traveling for my job. This tomtom works perfectly for me. Gives me good directions, recalculates when needed and i've had no problems getting a gps signal. The voice command doesn't work that great but from what I've read, that's not uncommon with most electronic devices. The lifetime online road map updates are included in the package.
    Pros:
lifetime updates, easy to read, good directions
    Cons:
voice command is not that gread

I have made this GPS as part of my daily commute to get traffic information. I also travel to national parks and other areas of historical importance and to beaches. My Its my hobby to visit Light Houses. This GPS helps guides me without any additional cost of updating maps of traffic information. I did not have problems in updating maps through totmtoms home. I have previous version of tomtom gps and the cost of updating maps wa almost same as a new one with lot more features. crutchfield has been very prompt and competitively priced in shopping automotive products.
