Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Our take on the Onkyo TX-SR606

by Dave Bar

Onkyo's advanced TX-SR606 delivers outstanding audio and video performance from today's newest generation of high-def components. This receiver gives you plenty of HDMI inputs along with sophisticated processing for a cutting-edge home theater experience. For example, it can decode Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD® Master Audio — two new high-resolution surround sound formats found on many newer Blu-ray players and discs.

Flexible HDMI switching with video upconversion to 1080i
The 'SR606's 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs let you hook up four high-def sources and switch easily among them, while maintaining pristine digital sound and picture quality. This receiver can also upconvert your non-HD sources to an HDMI signal with up to 1080i resolution. That means you can route all your video components through your receiver and make a single cable connection to your HDMI-equipped HDTV.

Fast, accurate setup
The 'SR606 includes Audyssey 2EQ, a sophisticated speaker calibration system that makes it simple to optimize surround sound for your room. Using the included microphone, the receiver analyzes sound from two different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. The result is clear, precise, natural sound.

Flexible entertainment options
This receiver's dual-room/dual-source audio capability lets you enjoy home theater in your main room while a housemate listens to stereo music in a second room. You can integrate your iPod® by adding Onkyo's handy control dock, and tune in to SIRIUS Satellite radio with the addition of an optional SiriusConnect™ home tuner kit.

    Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs): To decode and playback high-resolution recordings, this receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit DACs.

HDMI v1.3a Repeater: The TX-SR606 has four HDMI v1.3a inputs and one HDMI v1.3a output for connecting DVD players, HDTV set-top boxes, and other video components to your TV or projector. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs and HDMI out so you don't have to run and additional analog or digital cable. The HDMI inputs are also compatible with DVI, so TVs and displays with a DVI input can be connected by using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, along with audio cables. The receiver uses HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), so only HDCP-compatible components can display the picture. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals to a TV, monitor, or projector. Each of the HDMI inputs can be assigned to any of the four rear panel A/V inputs (DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game/TV). The receiver's HDMI input also supports the following functions.

    • xvColor: Increases detail and color space when watching movies on your television from an external device connected by HDMI through the TX-SR606.
    • Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.
    • HDMI Control: This function allows CEC-compatible components or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-SR606.
    • Power Control: This feature allows you to link the power functions of CEC-compatible components or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI.
    • TV Control: This function enables you to control this AV receiver from an RIHD-compatible TV connected via HDMI.

HDMI Video Upconversion With Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-SR606 will convert incoming analog composite video, S-video, and component video signals to HDMI so you can connect all your video sources through the receiver and then to your TV via HDMI to give you the best picture quality possible. Using Faroudja DCDi Edge Technology, the receiver has the ability upscale incoming analog and digital video signals up to 1080i. You can specify the output resolution for the receiver's HDMI output and have the AV receiver upconvert and upscale the picture resolution as necessary to match the resolution supported by your television. You can select from 480p, 720p, 1080i, Auto or Through.

Component Video Switching: In addition to HDMI, composite video, and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between high definition component video sources. There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 50MHz.

Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Front L/R and Surround Back L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respectively, or bi-amped to provide separate tweeter and woofer feeds for the front speaker, providing improved bass and treble performance. When the bi-amp feature is used, the AV receiver is able to drive up to 5.1 speakers in the main room.

Multi-Zone: The TX-SR606 features the following Zone 2 connections so you can listen to one input source in your main room and a different source in another room.

    • Line Out: By using the line-level outputs on the TX-SR606 you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by your optional integrated amp.
    • Speaker Out: By using the speaker-level outputs on the TX-SR606 you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by the TX-SR606 receiver.

iPod Compatible: The DS-A2x or DS-A3 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (item # 580DSA2X and 580DSA3) provide an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-SR606. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an Onkyo home theater system.

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: The TX-SR606 can be connected to the optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (part # 607SCH1, sold separately), which allows you to receive Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following Sirius information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title. You can store a combination of 40 of your favorite Sirius, AM, and FM radio stations.

Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey 2EQ can measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies and distances front he listening position and calculate the optimal speaker setting for you automatically. The supplied microphone is approximately 2" in diameter, 1" tall, and has a 19.5' cable that plugs into the front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver.

    • Speaker Size: You can set Large or Small for your front speakers; Large, Small or None for your surround, surround back, and center speakers; and Yes or No for subwoofer. You can also select 1ch or 2ch mode for the connected surround back speakers.
    • Speaker Distance: The distance from your listening position to each speaker can also be set manually. The front speaker distance can be set from 1 to 30 feet in 1-foot increments. The center and subwoofer settings can be up to 5 feet more or 5 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max). The settings for the surround left, surround right, surround back left, and surround back right speakers are each individually adjustable, and they may be up to 5 feet more or 15 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max).
    • Speaker Levels: You can manually adjust the level of individual speakers between -12dB and +12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.
    • Equalizer: You can adjust the receivers 5-band equalizer (63, 240, 1000, 4000, and16000 Hz) for each speaker manually from -6 to +6dB in 1dB increments.

Adjustable Crossover: This receiver has a built-in high-pass crossover for any of the speakers set to Small. This setting is available when the subwoofer is set to Yes. The frequencies that you can choose from are 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 Hz. Frequencies lower than the set crossover point are output by the subwoofer.

Bass And Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-SR606 from -10 to +10 dB.

Double Bass: You can enhance the bass output by activating the Double Bass function. This function allows you to feed bass frequencies to the front left and right channels and to the subwoofer. Double Bass can be set only when the subwoofer is set to On and the front speakers are set to Large.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The listening modes include:

    • Direct: This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. The sound recorded for the right and left front channels is output to the right and left front speakers only and not output to the subwoofer, center, or rear speakers.

Dolby Pro Logic II & IIx Music Modes: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIx Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

    • Panorama: broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu
    • Dimension: allows you to move the sound field forward or backward
    • Center Width:allows you to adjust the width of the center channel

Center Image: In the DTS Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey (2EQ, MultEQ, MultEQ XT) to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

AV Sync: Occasionally the audio and video signals are not properly synchronized, typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 100 milliseconds, in 20 millisecond steps.

IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input selector individually from -12 to +12 dB in 1 dB increments.

Multi-Channel Input: The receiver is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input for compatibility with external decoders or high resolution audio players such as DVD-Audio or SACD. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs.

On-Screen Display (OSD): The TX-SR606's on-screen setup menu appears on your connected TV and provides a convenient way to change the AV receiver's various settings using the supplied remote control. The onscreen setup menu appears only on TV connected to the receiver via HDMI. If your TV is connected to the composite video or S-Video Monitor Out or the Component Video Out, use the TX-SR606's integrated LCD display when changiing settings.

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Display Information: You can display various information about the current input source such as Input Source and Volume; Signal Format or Sampling Frequency; and Input Source and Listening Mode.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

    Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied RC-710M wireless remote is a multi-brand remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo components, as well as other popular brands of equipment, including DVD players, satellite receivers, cable boxes, VCRs, and televisions. The IR wireless remote control will operate up to 16-feet away from the receiver at an angle of 30-degrees left or right of the receiver as long as the remote is within the line of sight of the TX-SR606.

    Input and Output Notes

HDMI: The TX-SR606 is equipped with four assignable HDMI inputs and one HDMI monitor output. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. Audio signals received by the unit's HDMI inputs are output by the receiver's speaker outputs and HDMI out of the receiver.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable.

Multi-channel Input: Labeled DVD, the TX-SR606 has a multi-channel input for connecting a DVD player, a high resolution audio player (such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player), or an external decoder. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs. You can also connect a component using only left and right audio jacks, if desired. Additionally there are composite video, S-video, and component video jacks for this input. This DVD input is included in the total of 6 A/V inputs.

Speaker Outputs: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back, and right surround back speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs. There are spring terminals for the Zone 2 speakers

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.

Front Panel A/V Input: The receiver features a composite video terminal and a set of stereo audio RCA terminals on the unit's front-panel.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The speaker outputs are muted when headphones are plugged in. The headphone output level can be adjusted from -12dB to +12dB.

    Avoid This Product

Written By Chris, Midwest on Saturday, April 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My previous receiver (a Yamaha) lasted 30 years before finally breaking. This one lasted about 1 year before showing signs of poor design. I purchased one after good reviews. But immediately I noticed the unit ran very hot, requiring me to install a fan in the cabinet to keep it from melting my disks and other equipment. Later the display stopped working, deciding instead to display hexadecimal codes. Then it stopped playing certain subsets of my speakers at random times. It still puts out sound most of the time, but the problems inherent in this product should serve as a warning to consumers to stay away from this company (Onkyo).
    Pros:
    None
    Cons:
Overheats and breaks within 2 years.

    HDMI / picture problems developed

Written By C H Rasch, Minneapolis on Thursday, October 27, 2011

This receiver turned out to have been too highly recommended and an awful choice. The picture began to have visual static... little horizontal "static" flashes and lines that grew to the picture cutting out and the system going to black and a message that it was searching for a signal. "HDMI No Time Information, Searching for a signal, 1920 x 1080i @ 60 Hz" This kind of black out sometimes hit four times a minute creating a good deal of anger in my usually tranquil soul.

I tried several new HDMI cables and reassigning HDMI slots. I even ran a single HDMI cable from the Comcast box to the TV set and ran the sound through optical fiber into the AV slot on the back of the Onkyo. BUT, a ponderous delay developed in switching and even turning the system on. I concluded it was very faulty HDMI hardware. i.e. this unit is a piece of junk. I am guessing that the glowing reviews dated around 2009 no longer stand. I am guessing that those who were big fans are now like me, never interested in a piece of Onkyo equipment again. I will rely more on C/Net for reviews since they don't have inventory to move.
    Pros:
    In the end? Nothing.
    Cons:
    HDMI / picture failure

    Avoid this limited life product

Written By ToddL, Chicago, IL on Friday, September 09, 2011

Worked beautifully at first, but the time it takes to "warm up" gets longer each day. I've also experienced trouble with the HDMI inputs--specifically for my BluRay DVD. I even bought a new DVD player b/c I thought the player was the problem. It's the receiver. Last Onkyo I'll ever buy. Sad.

Worked great for close to two years but now the HDMI will not switch until the unit is on for 10-15 minutes. Sad to see Onkyo will not stand behind its product. I guess its time to give Yamaha a try.

If you want HDMI video do NOT buy this unit

Written By PJAZZ, Clarence, NY on Friday, February 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver in August 2008, at the strong encouragement of the Crutchfield sales
rep. All was well for the first 6 months, then we started experiencing periodic HDMI video
signal failures. The problem has grown progressively worse over the last 18 months, and
now we're at the point where we have to repeatedly cycle the receiver on and off and hope it
creates a clean signal so the picture doesn't flicker, snow out, or simply black out. I've read
on HDTV forums that this is a common problem with this model. I'm going to have to buy a
new receiver - it won't be an Onkyo and I'm pretty sure it won't be from Crutchfield.

    1 year life.....

Written By JD, Centereach,NY on Wednesday, February 09, 2011

Receiver is one of the best I have ever used...... that being said it has a 1 year life..... the hdmi daughterboard is not a maybe it will happen problem, its a when will it happen problem.....there is a fix by replacing 5 capacitors on the board... this problem is caused by onkyo using cheap capacitors on its board.... if it was not for this issue i would give this 5 stars...... when the receiver is warmed up it still works better than any other i have seen (takes 5 minutes to warm up)

    VERY Disapointed!!

Written By Ryan H., Houston, TX on Friday, January 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Much like the other bad reviews on here, my receiver worked just fine until about a year after it was purchased. I have now had to take it to a local repair shop twice for two different failures and it is now at Onkyo's repair facility in Colorado for a third "fix". My warranty expires in Feb. of 2011 and all they could tell me was "there is nothing we can do". It's hard to give this product a good rating when I spend more time having it repaired than I do enjoying it.

I asked some employees at the repair shop if it was possible that I just got a "lemon" and was told that the two most common brands of receivers they have to fix were Onkyo and Denon. For my next purchase, I then asked what receiver they saw the least. To my surprise, I was told they very rarely see Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha, etc.

Hope this helps you make your decision. I know after all of this, I wouldn't buy another Onkyo product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver back in October 2008. I would continue to give this
receiver 5 stars, if the HDMI TV/SAT input had not started to fail........the
port still receives picture, however the sound does not work anymore. So, I have
to use the sound from the TV only, vice a combination of both.
I had even did my research, and was happy w/ the reviews and reputation w/ ONKYO
systems. I now have to get it fixed (at some point). I will NOT be buying
    another ONKYO anytime soon!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first clue that the unit was failing was no picture.
The HDMI indicator on the menu screen would not light up when I tried to play a DVD.
The sound played through because I used a Toslink optical cable to pass the sound.

Next to go was the blue ray picture. Then the Wii. Only the cable HD is working.

    Purchased in late 2009.

Bought this unit on recommendation from Crutchfield rep. Wow, this thing cranks and paired with the Mirage speaker system I am truly impressed. The opening seen to the Dark Knight when the window shatters...sounds like one of my house windows. The really amazing feature is the room setup feature where the receiver tweaks itself to the conditions of your room by prompting you to move the included microphone to 3 different listening locations in your room. Sweet!!!

HDMI card goes bad around a year. Very common problem in ONKYO receivers. TX-SR606 is really bad with this problem. Google "Onkyo HDMI Problems". I loved this receiver...but do your homework on this issue and don't buy an Onkyo. Crutchfield is great, but this product is NOT.

The set-up mic w/3 positions makes this well worth the price. Can't imagine
setting up a surround system without it. The on screen display makes it easy
when hidden systems are a must!

Love the receiver. My man-cave is now complete with amazing sound coupled with the Samsung 52" LCD. The setup using the microphone worked very well. I recently connected my laptop to the system with the HDMI cable and the picture and sound was impressive.

I have had this unit for less then a year, the sound is terrible and zone 2 no longer works.

Can't tell you how much I enjoy having to repack and ship it out for repairs.

Not the ONKYO quality I remember.

I needed to upgrade to a HDMI receiver after purchasing a new Samsung plasma. I had a 10 year old system in place (Sony projection TV, receiver and Bose Acoutamass 5.1 system) so I was curious to see how the technology had advanced over the past decade. Huge difference. The Onkyo set up was simple and the sound is terrific. Very happy with the purchase and support from Crutchfield.

Was ordering a different receiver when Crutchfield made me an offer I could not refuse. I had to do some fast research on the Onkyo TX-SR606 before taking the offer. And I am glad I did. This unit is easy to set up and easy to use with very superior performance. I have owned other Onkyo products so I felt comfortable taking this deal. One of the main factors I was looking for was the ability to hook up multi-HDMI devices. The remote was very easy to program and use. Very happy with my decision.

This receiver has exceeded my expectations. I have it paired with Polk Audio 5.1 speakers model RM6750 and a 60" tv. All my connections (satellite, Sony Blu-Ray, etc) are old HDMI. The sound just blows me away and the setup with the included mic does all the work. I had forgotten how much I was missing out on movies not having the sub and the rear speakers. - Highly recommend! -

    Onkyo TX-SR606

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ended up getting this receiver when the Sony STRDG820 7.1 Audio Video Receiver was backordered. I am extremely pleased with this receiver. I have my HD cable/DVR box, Apply TV and PS3 on the HDMI ports, and an analog VCR and DVD player. The Audessy sound setup was easy, with excellent results - my speakers sound so much better, this is what the surround sound was supposed to be. The directions were a little hard to figure out - I had to move the Apple TV off the DVD HDMI port, because it overlaid the analog DVD ports where I had the analog player plugged in. I also had to reset the default digital component input for the DVD player (am using S video) - once I turned that off everything worked great. The sound is just great!
