Parrot

Our take on the Parrot MKi9100

by Dominic Devito

We carry cell phone kit harnesses that allow simple, plug-in connection of Parrot's Bluetooth car kits in a wide variety of vehicles.

Parrot's MKi9100 Bluetooth car kit combines easy hands-free operation of your compatible phone or device — such as the iPhone, iPhone 3G, or BlackBerry Storm — with control over many portable music sources, including the iPod®. You'll see information about incoming calls displayed on its screen, and you'll be able to carry on conversations directly through your car stereo. This kit works with nearly all Bluetooth cell phones on the market and it's compatible with most car stereo systems.

The kit contains three components: a mute box that installs beneath the dashboard, a remote control keypad, and an OLED display panel. The mute box connects to your stereo system through a wiring kit harness and to the display panel with a single wire. The MKi9100 connects to your Bluetooth phone automatically once you start your car, and it can handle up to five Bluetooth devices at once.

Easy operation
With many phones, the voice-recognition software remembers up to 150 names from your address book for dialing, so you can dial by speaking. Using built-in text-to-speech technology, the MKi9100 can announce the names of your contacts, so you can browse through your phonebook or check out who's calling without taking your eyes off the road.

Visual convenience and security
The MKi9100's high-contrast screen displays phone numbers, caller names, and music information. The MKi9100 mutes your car stereo when a call comes in, ensuring clear sound over your car's speakers. Two built-in microphones reduce noise and interference so you can hear the conversation clearly. You can talk in a normal tone — no need to shout, even in heavy traffic. The compact display panel detaches from its mounting base, so you can keep the kit out of the hands of thieves.

User-friendly controls
The MKi9100 will guide you through dialing, accessing your phonebook, voicemail, and other phone functions while you concentrate on driving. You can use the keypad's scroll-knob to control the volume and browse menus, or to rewind, fast-forward, or jump to another song.

Access email and text messages with your voice
This kit is now compatible with TextFriendly®, a service which allows you to access your email and text messages, all by voice activation. You can listen to, delete, compose, reply, and forward without taking your eyes off the road. TextFriendly also works with Facebook and Twitter updates, and is compatible with all phones that work with your Parrot device. You get a year of free service from Parrot — after that, you pay $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year.

Access and control your music
The kit also features several connections for your portable music devices. The USB input works with newer iPods or other MP3 players. Simply connect your player and leave it in the glove compartment — you can control all the action from the keypad. You can even use your voice to control the music on your iPhone 3GS via the MKi9100's microphone. You'll also find an auxiliary input to connect audio from other music sources.

You can use the MKi9100 to control the musical output of your factory stereo system. The MKi9100's built-in amplifier helps reproduce all your music and conversations with added clarity and fidelity. If you're running an amplified or aftermarket system, you can bypass this feature to enjoy the juiced-up sound you've already got.

Note: Compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Parrot MKi9100 is just what I needed

Written By RG, East Tennessee on Saturday, February 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system does exactly what I need - provides great Bluetooth functionality. I have always installed aftermarket stereos in my vehicles and while all have provided great audio, some of the Bluetooth functionality has been marginal. I finally decided to try a dedicated unit and ordered an open-box Parrot MKi9100 from Crutchfield along with the recommended harness for my Ford Escape. My wife can actually hear me now when talking on my cell phone! Some of my previous head-units have had built-in Parrot Bluetooth, but whatever noise-canceling voodoo they do with the dual-microphones on this unit is far superior to the Clarion and Kenwood units I used previously in this vehicle. The iPod/USB capability works well too.
    Pros:
Excellent Bluetooth performance Good audio from iPod / MP3 USB (for a 20W/ch RMS amp) Intuitive user interface - controls logical and easy to use The "open-box" item was indistinguishable from a new boxed product except for some Crutchfield tape on the box. Item was pristine and functions flawlessly.
    Cons:
    None so far.

This was disappointing. We had to return it because it couldn't be installed. This, after we talked to someone at Crutchfield who assured us we could get it installed in my son's Honda.

Crutchfield customer support is top notch

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to purchase the Parrot MKi9100 for our Mazda 6 from Crutchfield because of the great help I got on the phone before I purchased. When I called to ask some questions about DIY installation the reps on the phone were very knowledgeable and gave not even a hint of pressure to buy from Crutchfield. They steered me in the direction of quick connect who provided a custom cable that allowed direct plug and play to my factory Bose system, couldn't have been easier! I'm very pleased with the result. The parrot gives seamless Bluetooth connectivity of my iPhone enabling use of phone and music without wires..........awesome

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very pleased. Looked a bit overwhelming when I first looked at, but its easy once you lay it all out. Connected to the stock stereo in a 2004 Ford F350. I installed it 3 weeks ago, and it's worked flawlessly.
    Pros:
    Easy installation
    Cons:
Would be nice if it was as loud as the stereo

    Not reliable for the price

Written By ChrisP, Seattle, WA on Friday, April 06, 2012

Not ready for prime time. The concept is good, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I have one of these for my wife's Acura MDX and another for my Dodge Ram pickup. The MDX unit failed while still under warranty, but Parrot wouldn't honor the warranty- fortunately, Crutchfield came through on that one. Software on the original units needs updating, but you have to take the car apart to update the box. The replacement unit has updated software, but doesn't work any better. Doesn't recognize the word 'home" unless you shout it several times- very poor voice recognition. Batteries wear out quickly (less than a year) and although we don't remove the removable screen, it still has worn so that if you hit a bump it pops out of the cradle, causing a reboot. I wouldn't recommend this product.
    Pros:
    Technically works as promised.
    Cons:
Only works well upon installation. wears out quickly, extremely frustrating to use on a daily basis- will probably cause more accidents than it prevents.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this and am VERY surprised by how good it works. The install was easier then expected, with the T harness from Crutchfield. I had to call Crutchfield with a couple questions about extra wires, but with their advice the install went smoothly.

The Parrot quickly sinc'd with my LG phone via bluetooth and my ipod when I plugged it in. The sound is actually a little better then the stock radio because the Parrot has a small amp in it. Overall, I'd say buy this product! It's in my wife's car now. If after a month I'm still this impressed, I'll buy another for my Honda.

I can't even take this product seriously.

Written By Patriot_RAM, Ozarks on Saturday, August 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is a joke. I installed this in my 2004 Dodge RAM using the adapter recommended by Crutchfield. The sole purpose was for iPhone integration. I wanted to use the hands free, phone charger, and have the ability to easily choose different songs to play.

    Pros: - It's blue.

Cons: - The unit will lose sync with the phone and fail to control it. Have to pull over and turn the truck off to reboot the MKI. - Often, music from the phone stops playing on the MKI. Pull over, reboot. - Bluetooth music is very quiet, have to plug it into the port on the phone to listen to music. - Scrolling through song titles by letter fails and skips many letters. Updating the firmware helped, but still happens. - Knob falls off controller if you bump it and during use. - Rubber "band" that attaches it to steering sheel wore out after three months - Display is hard to see, even though I have tinted windows (dim mode can't even be read at night) - Bluetooth speakerphone is unusable. I have to hold it in front of my mouth for the other person to hear me. The other person also hears an echo of their own voice.

I expected MUCH better for the price I paid for this and the adapter. This makes two crutchfield recommended purchases in a row that are ABSOLUTE JUNK.

    Parrot MKi9100

Written By Conrad, Ontario, Canada on Monday, April 18, 2011

If your looking to integrate a bluetooth unit with your factory OR aftermarket deck - this parrot MKI9100 unit is amazing. The volume is clear, the sound cancelling is on par with the best of anything I have ever used. The built in sound recognition also works as well as anything I have ever tried - AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. My callers hear me clearly even at 100+ (KM/H) with windy/rainy conditions. Negatives? Make sure you purchase the crutchfield adapter - although you don't HAVE to - the wiring is complex without it!
PS... the boot time is just a little longer than my Deck - but it pairs instantly with my phone - making it ready almost immediately. I definately recommend this unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product works great. Has better microphone reception than the factory
installed Uconnect . Very happy with the product. It was installed in a 2004
Taurus. I was very disappointed in the tech support for installing since the amp
was in the trunk for the speaker connections. I was given clear instruction on
the in or out for the speaker mute. Had to have a local Parrot dealer install at
get expense. You need a tee- connection and wire supply kit for the Taurus
series and examples and running the wires to the trunk. But the product works
    great.

    Good product work wells

Written By Anon, Hartford, CT on Saturday, February 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product does everything it describes and works well. Voice recognition calling is great so you never have to take your eyes off the road. The microphone is great, people have always had difficulty hearing me talk through a phone, but with this microphone there are never any issues. I give them 4 vs. 5 because because the remote does not look to be the most robust. The unit is quick and easy to install, I had it connected and functional inside of twenty minutes. I also purchased the wiring harness from Crutchfield so that I did not have to splice wires etc., that made it very easy and much cleaner IMO; well worth the additional money. If you aren't skilled at wiring definitely purchase through Crutchfield since they provide support with their product, vs. other retailers or something similar. The pricing is nearly the same and the state of mind knowing the service is there for assistance in installation and returns etc. if necessary are well worth the small price difference. It did take me an hour or two to install the box and wires cleanly behind my dash, but I am very particular and wanted everything to be clean and not hanging or visible. Use a dashboard remove toolkit to prevent damaging dash and the expedite this step. The other product I considered was the Dice product. The Parrot product was less expensive and had better reviews and functionality, I am very pleased with my decision.

    Parrot MKi9100

Written By 54effie, Los Angeles, CA on Monday, January 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Parrot MKi9100 did everything that I needed and then more. I ordered the
T-harness from Crutchfield that matched the radio in my car ... looking at the
diagrams puzzeled me. After talking to John in Crutchfield Customer Support
he said that everything is "plug and play" and that the plugs are made so that
you cannot plug into the wrong jack . I found that the harness is made just like
John said and I found is "idiot-proof" where you cannot accidentally plug into
a wrong jack ... very easy. All the rest of the loose wires is not needed and is
just tucked away (I zip-tied mine) ... if the Crutchfield T-Harness is used.

Suggestion: In the Crutchfield instructions, please state that if the Crutchfield
T-harness is used, no other connections or wire splicing is needed ... just
plug all the connectors in ... the connectors are made so that the connectors
    cannot be plugged in wrong.

I plan on buying more of these and other items from Crutchfield!

Thank you John ... you made my day!

    Very nice system

Written By John, Philadelphia, PA on Monday, August 09, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my 2008 Honda Pilot. I bought the Honda-compatible adapter harness, and installation was pretty much plug-and-play once I removed the radio. Total installation took me about an hour.

The system itself does exactly what it says. Syncing my phone (Blackberry 9630) was fast & easy. Audio plays through the line-in, iPod, and USB jacks just as you would expect. Choosing songs and artists is a ittle clunky, but it's not bad. The phone functionality works great -- everything mutes when a call comes through or when you want to place a call, and it un-mutes when you are done. It's all seamless and intuitive. Audio quality is good, and it met my expectations on all fronts.

My only gripe isn't the Parrot MKI9100's fault, but it is a legitimate gripe. My Pilot has a factory subwoofer that is powered by the head unit. The wire running to the subwoofer does not pass through the Parrot's blue box like the other speakers. As a result, when a call comes in, the speakers mute but the subwoofer keeps thumping away. The same thing is true for listening to music from an iPod, USB, or aux input -- the speakers play what's coming from the Parrot, but the subwoofer thumps away to the Radio, XM, or CD from the head unit. The easy fix is to turn off the radio while using the Parrot, but it is still a minor annoyance.

I am happy with the Parrot, and I would recommend it to others. The gripe I mentioned above is the only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had grown tired of charging my bluetooth headsets and searched around before finally deciding on this particular parrot model. i already have an ipod adapter in my car so I don't use the one supplied with the model but as far as the bluetooth call performance is concerned I couldn't be happier!

I will say though that I was disappointed the quick connect harness for my vehicle was not available through crutchfield. I googled around for a quick connect (no splicing involved) harness for my 2008 G35x and found one at a reasonable price. Start to finish it took me 20 minutes to remove the radio, put this in, replace the radio and have my phone paired. It couldn't have been easier!!

My only wish is that the unit would be able to display the call on the car's radio screen instead of the parrot LCD, but that's a big request understandably.

The Crutchfield price was WAY cheaper than other comparable places. Over the years i've ordered several radios, speakers and other accessories from Crutchfield and I will continue to keep coming back!!

The real state of the art

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Parrot has earned their reputation for a reason- this unit works very well, is easy to install and simple to understand. I have been trying to get a workable bluetooth solution for my iPhone that will allow me to stream audio via bluetooth. I had an older Parrot receiver which worked exactly as promised, but was completely dysfunctinal as a car stereo. The Clarion and Kenwood in-dash receivers I tried had flaws of their own, which made them difficult to use without taking your eyes off the road- obviously not the best solution. The stand-alone Parrot kit fits the bill perfectly. Plug-and-play for my car with the optional wiring harness (highly recommended) and extremely simple to install. the hardest part is figuring out where to mount the screen and control. Plug it in and it works like a champ.

PROS: Easy install, great sound, many easy adjustments like mic gain and menu volume make it easy to tailor to your own specifications.

CONS: System is a full-blown computer, so it takes a minute or so to boot up when you start the car. Streaming Pandora over bluetooth sometimes switches off between songs- presumably the dead air makes the unit believe there is no more signal- not a big deal, and likely iPhone related rather than Parrot.

Great equipment and easy to install

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went to Crutchfield Customer assistance to ensure that I ordered the right parts for the install . They were extremely helpful to ensure that I was able to get it right the first time. Ordered the unit and a patch cable for my vehicle and when it came in I was able to install it all myself, Plug and Play. I ran into one problem with the remote in that I hadn't paired the remote to the unit. The instructions do not show that is a required step. I called Crutchfield Tech Support and we had it going in about 10 min. The tech said that they had the more in depth instructions on their site for download.

I placed the remote on my steering wheel and the display next to the radio and all works great. The voice dial is so simple, wasn't necessary to activate as directions said. Can adjust volume from the remote, could use some more for when I play my music from my phone. Microphone is very sensitive. a friend had to ask me to stop yelling. Clearity is good.

This has been a very positive purchase and would buy more of the Parrot products if needed.

Thanks to the folks at Crutchfield for an enjoyable purchase, very professional.

    3rd time is the charm

Written By gstern1994, Purcellville, Va on Thursday, February 26, 2009

Well, I bought the first one and had it installed and could not get it respond to the remote and it would not pair. CF was great and sent another one right out. Second one, same install, no luck - same problems. CF spent time on the phone with the installer so I'm confident that they knew what they were doing. Before the third one was sent out, CF made sure it worked in their test car. Next one, BINGO!

If I had bought this from any of the Grey Market guy's, I would have been holding a hunk of plastic. Instead I received patience and limitless support. Thank you CF.

The unit works very well, the voice rec. is spot on. I didn't even have to set up the voice tagging per the instructions. I have a BB Curve with voice dialing activated and it understands everything. The display is very readable, plus it goes to sleep when not in use. It's hooked up to an Alpine X-100. The volume is controlled by the Parrot itself and sometimes it could use a bit more.

I was pleasantly surprised that the X-100 in addition to muting the radio when a call comes in also pauses iPod playback as well.

When a call comes in the name is announced you give the remote a little click to pick up (caller id info is displayed) and a click to end. The remote lets you scroll through your phone book by letter (it reads the letter of the alphabet as you scroll ), call logs etc.. all by just listening & clicking. You never have to take your eyes off the road.

It is great! I guess my first two weren't just lemons.
